Buffett, the Bard of Omaha, is a genuine American folk hero, if folk heroes are allowed to build fortunes worth upward of $15 billion. He's great at homespun metaphor, but behind those catchy phrases is a reservoir of financial acumen that's generally considered the best of his generation. For example, in an essay on CEO stock options, he writes, "Negotiating with one's self seldom produces a barroom brawl." This is his way of saying that an executive who can give himself compensation totally disproportionate to his performance surely will. There are uncountable gems of financial wisdom to be harvested from these essays, taken from the annual reports he writes for Berkshire Hathaway, his holding company. Just to pick one more, here's a now-famous line about those he competes with when making stock-market investments: "What could be more advantageous in an intellectual contest--whether it be chess, bridge, or stock selection--than to have opponents who have been taught that thinking is a waste of energy?"

While Buffett has a policy of seldom commenting on stocks he owns--he feels public pronouncements will only lead to the public's expectation of more public pronouncements, and he likes to keep his cards close to his vest--he loves to discuss the principles behind his investments. These come primarily from Ben Graham, under whom Buffett studied at Columbia University and for whom he worked in the 1950s. First among them is the idea that price is what you pay and value is what you get--and if you're a smart investor, the first will always be less than the second. In that sense, the value of the lessons learned from Buffett's Essays could be far greater than the book's price. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

The definitive work concerning Warren Buffett and intelligent investment philosophy, this is a collection of Buffett's letters to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway written over the past few decades that together furnish an enormously valuable informal education. The letters distill in plain words all the basic principles of sound business practices. They are arranged and introduced by a leading apostle of the "value" school and noted author, Lawrence Cunningham. Here in one place are the priceless pearls of business and investment wisdom, woven into a delightful narrative on the major topics concerning both managers and investors. These timeless lessons are ever-more important in the current environment.

Lucid and brilliant, a clear lesson on capital allocation. The only objection would be the repeated content, but truthfully it helped the ideas sink in a bit.

Thank you for editing this collection Professor Cunningham.

5 out of 5 stars Real Wisdom at a Good Price.......2007-08-05

I work for a financial services company, and I'm subjected to corporate gobbledegook on a daily basis. Warren Buffett gets to the point. His explanations of financial transactions seem so effortless, I can't imagine how others get so confused and obtuse. Here's a mind worth delving in to, and this book lets you sit on the shoulder of a modern genius to see how he thinks. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-07-09

These are the actual words penned by Buiffett. Not as dry as one would think, he's actually a wonderful writer. The Oracle of Omaha can turn a phrase and while parts of this are slow going, I enjoyed it throughly.

I heartily recommend this book for those desiring wealth. I also strongly recommend The Millionaire Mind by Tom Stanley. The Millionaire Mind

4 out of 5 stars Good book.........2007-09-30

The overall book is in great condition.. But the cover page was damage in the process of delivery.. Still a good book..

2 out of 5 stars Poor Textbook.......2007-09-09

I am using this book as a textbook for my accounting course this semester (fall, 2007).
After reading the first four chapters of the book, I found that it was very confusing to read. Particularly, the end-of-the chapter exercise questions are worse. P 4-3 (an exercise at the end of chapter) is one of the countless questions which are written carelessly. In a word, the book is extremely disappointing. I just wonder whether there is anyone else who can write an intermediate accounting textbook in such a clear way as Harrison and Horngren's Financial Accounting was written. Finally, I can't quite understand why instructors are using such a poor book as a textbook.

2 out of 5 stars great reference book but poor text book.......2007-09-09

This book is huge. Nearly 1500 pages of cramped text in small print make it hard to read and handle in the normal day-to-day use for classes. I usually make copies of the individual chapters for studying because of its impossible size. Without any doubt, this book is very comprehensive. It makes a great reference book with its vast coverage of topics and info.

However, I am using this book for three accounting classes. I have already used this for one class and I am currently doing the second class. I spent far more time than necessary completing the course requirements because of the very poor application as a text book. Most good accounting books have plenty of examples and also comprehensive problems at the end to clarify the concepts. Not so with this book. Comprehensive problem sets are absent and examples are minimal. Not very good if you try to understand accounting rules and concepts. The publisher's website has powerpoint slides for each chapter. I found those slides more useful and better organized than the textbook itself.

I give it 1 star as a text book and 4 stars as a reference book

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-26

Great accounting book. This textbook is extremely helpful. It's probably the best text out there. I have this book. I want to part with it. Sctops140 at aol dot com for details. I bought this book for my intermediate accounting class at UW-Whitewater. It really helped me better understand concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Grim, grinding, and expensive; this is the the best you can get.......2007-06-06

My qualifications: BA in Business, BS is Accountancy, MBA finance, CPA, Corporate Controller and Financial Mananger. I've been buying and reviewing new editions of this text every few years for over 20 years now. Why? Becasue if accountancy is your profession you cannot afford not to be completely up to date. Things change. Even all you want to do is make a decent salary and vegetate somewhere, someone is trying to bury you and take your job (or your company). Count on it. It is about competiveness, survival, and prospering. When can you quit studying? Never.

This is the text to put you ahead. I have seen shorter, more simple, less comprehensive, and much cheaper texts. But do you want the competitive edge or not?

There are other non-book alternatives. If your're a CPA, you'll have to keep plugging along with the CPE programs forever (sigh), but they don't hack it in depth compared to this. Even the AICPA's Journal of Accountancy, though highly reccomended, and far more timely than any book, cannot cover the details adequately.

Or you could take a CPA exam review course like Becker's every so oftern. That will set you back a fortune and hundreds of hours of your life. But you will be completely up to the minute on most everything. How long you remember everything after finishing the review course is another question.

"A practicing CPA simply cannot know the answers to many practice questions as they arise but rather needs the ability to find such answers." (NASBA site) This is the one stop text to do it.

A couple pieces of advice. Don't take the text into the office unless you see it (or others like it) on partners' bookshelves. Keep it out in the car for lunch, afterwork, fake restroom breaks, last minute reviews before you go in, or whatever. Also, never ever take it into a client's site. It may sometimes seem like a good idea, but your manager will probably slap you around for it.

Any text is only good for a few years, then spring for a new edition. If you get this text, give yourself some time working through it on the parts that are new to you or give you the most trouble or worry at work. Then consider buying the study guide. It's not a substitute for the book but it can speed things up for you a lot.

If you think this is a lot of work or baloney, try weighing it against not getting a good raise or promotion. Best wishes and good look.

P.S. I'm on this page because I'm buying my latest copy.

Book Description

"The Long Tail" is a powerful new force in our economy: the rise of the niche. As the cost of reaching consumers drops dramatically, our markets are shifting from a one-size-fits-all model of mass appeal to one of unlimited variety for unique tastes. From supermarket shelves to advertising agencies, the ability to offer vast choice is changing everything, and causing us to rethink where our markets lie and how to get to them. Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it, from DVDs at Netflix to songs on iTunes to advertising on Google. However, this is not just a virtue of online marketplaces; it is an example of an entirely new economic model for business, one that is just beginning to show its power. After a century of obsessing over the few products at the head of the demand curve, the new economics of distribution allow us to turn our focus to the many more products in the tail, which collectively can create a new market as big as the one we already know. The Long Tail is really about the economics of abundance. New efficiencies in distribution, manufacturing, and marketing are essentially resetting the definition of whats commercially viable across the board. If the 20th century was about hits, the 21st will be equally about niches.

2 out of 5 stars Good article, stretched out to a padded book.......2007-09-26

This book started off as an article in Wired Magazine, and it was an excellent one. But Anderson must have decided to cash in, because the book doesn't add anything that wasn't covered in the article itself. It's not a complex concept.

Read the article on the Wired website. Then go spend your money on something from a tiny niche market.

3 out of 5 stars One Trick Pony.......2007-09-09

This is one of those books that has one, keen insight and then takes one hundred + pages to say the same thing over and again. The keen point is indeed interesting. It just does not a complete book make. My $.02 !!

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the startup entrepreneur in the 21-century .......2007-08-20

This is an insightful book into the today's world of retail business. Cool examples of how the Internet has leveled the playing field for many small businesses and artist.

5 out of 5 stars Looking at it from the point of view of the producer and not the consumer or the retailer .......2007-08-16

I am not much of a business mind but I think I get the picture here. Instead of twenty percent of the product bringing in eighty percent of the revenue ninety- eight percent of the product is going to bring in all the revenue. Having so much available, and having ready access to it means sales no longer concentrate on a relatively few items. Freedom of choice abounds, niches multiply, Alvin Toffler is happy, future shock is no longer shocking, customization is here forever, and we all can have anything we want as long as we are able to pay for it.
Good. But I think of this in another way. Does this mean that 'value' also will not be centered as we ordinarily center it in the great works, the masterpeices, the few chosen ones? Does it mean our whole conception of valuing cultural goods will change, and a few big things will be less worshipped while many more appreciated? In other words will deTocqueville be happy here because 'equality' is in the saddle and mankind has many little good things, instead of the aristocracy only having a few?
And what does that mean for creators of culture? As a writer can I now happily post my unpublished writings with the thought that perhaps a few will read them, where before none did. In other words a moneyless long- tail is still a long- tail.
I don't know. But I do sense Anderson has hit on to a new truth here which will have all kinds of implications better business people than me will have to see.

4 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-08-14

The Long Tail is a must read for anyone wondering how the Internet works or how it's changing the world as we know it. In the book, Chris Anderson, the editor of Wired Magazine, explains how one simple principle is behind so many of the social and economic changes we are seeing with the internet. The Internet makes it possible for many people to produce and publish cheaply and for many other people to find those "amateur" works easily. For example, until the Internet, the only music you had access to was the top 40 on the radio or maybe the top 500 albums at the music store and maybe a local band at the bar on weekends. Now you have access to hundreds of thousands of songs written and produced by anybody and everybody in the world. Not only that but they are easily searchable in many different ways. So a you don't have to listen to just hits anymore and you don't have to be a world wide hit to be successful. That's what is changing the world. Niche markets are growing (around all of these non-hit works) and at the same time the way we share and find these niche products is becoming easier and easier - creating new communities online.

Chris Anderson explains it much better than me and I highly recommend the book if you've noticed that the Internet is changing the world and wondered why.

1 out of 5 stars Not helpful supplement to actual textbook.......2007-09-13

This book claims that you will "never hightlight again," but actually all this is is a glossary-like listing of vocabulary words from each chapter of the actual textbook. The general point of the information from the actual text does not come through at all. If you are using the actual textbook for a class, you will not understand the material if do not read the actual text. If you already bought the textbook, this is not a necessary (or even helpful) supplement.

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-03-21

5 out of 5 stars Book for online course.......2006-11-03

I am using this book for a online college curse and the book it's great! It provide many tools like the textbook's website to help you to understand the material and exams online. In general, I like the little cases that are update and motivate you to keep reading.
If this book by itself can help you to develop you own Small Business, it worth.

4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2006-03-04

Good overview on what you need to consider before you start your own business.

3 out of 5 stars It's... OK........2002-08-26

The presentation of this book is excellent; It holds the reader's interest quite well. However, despite a recent "update", it shows it's age when the author regularly goes off on dot-com tangents, bringing the internet up in contexts that I believe the last few years have proven are not viable. Good grief, ppl. This isn't freaking 1997! We need a business text, not the wet dreams of a bunch of computer geeks turned businessmen! Anyways, if you are looking for a text with a lot of depth, look elsewhere. This book is to business textbooks what Quickbooks(c)(R)(TM) is to accounting software. In short, don't waste your money, unless you need it for a class. If so, be happy. If your prof teaches out of this, your tests will be very easy.

4 out of 5 stars Book for new managers.......2007-07-15

This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide .......2007-07-05

I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.

1 out of 5 stars Who needs this? .......2007-06-12

If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.

It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.

One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16

Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative business guide to strategy.......2006-08-23

I bought this book for a college class and kept it. While it is not the most exciting book, the case studies are an excellent guide to a wide range of business plans and strategies. The cases are divided into four categories: single business companies, diversified companies, implementing and executing strategy and ethics & social responsibility. The cases are very complete and interesting. The downside is the shelf life of the book - I would expect a new edition before long.

2 out of 5 stars Student Review.......2005-12-10

I am a student majoring in Business Administration who recently used this text in an upper-level management course. The book's writing is utterly superfluous. Boredom was frequently my sentiment as I weeded through unnecessarily labyrinthine sentences. The ideas in the book were occasionally interesting, but were usually ideas I had already developed on my own via simple intuition. Perhaps the most valuable part of the text is the section of case studies. This closing segment of the book contains many great ideas for student projects. Overall, this text disappoints me as a student

I will begin using this product next week, and will be in a better position to review it after my six week module.

I received my book in a timely fashion and everything was just as stated. Seller is 100% reliable.

2 out of 5 stars CRAFTING AND EXECUTING STRATEGY.......2007-09-22

IT TOOK A WHILE FOR THE TEXTBOOK TO REACH ME. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH HOW SLOW THE DELIVERY PROCESS WAS AND ALMOST DIDN'T HAVE THE TEXT IN TIME FOR CLASS. SERVICE AND DELIVERY COULD BE MUCH MORE PROMPT.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-09-20

This book is just what I need for my class - Strategic Management - the one class I absolutely have to take in order to graduate since I'm a Business major.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product+Service from Amazon.com.......2007-03-13

This was the best product i've ever purchased from Amazon.com. Until most recently, I've only bought textbooks from Amazon, and that too at a very short notice (the kind of lazy person that I am!).. and Amazon has really kept me happy!
This is a great book for those taking a course on Strategic Management, and for those who are not, but are so much more interested in learning so much about how all those CEOs do their work. This book has got it all, complete with real-world case studies of your most admired corporations, how they've been faring good or bad, and develops a real deep insight into the precedant variables that have caused it's current performance. This book is superb for those who wish to analyze the nuances of what it takes to run a business (any business). Highly Recommended!
About Amazon, I can't thank them enough. I needed the book within three days --I had a class assignment due in that time, and lazy that I am, I had to wait until the last minute to order it. But, thanks to Amazon's 2-day "guaranteed" shipping that I received it on the 2nd day. Guaranteed!
Also highly recommended to all those who want it "fast"...!

    3 out of 5 stars Developer Book.......2007-02-04

It's a school book with an enormous amount of information. It would take years to go through. Great for a class course where an instructor could teach the chapters quickly and point out all of the important details.

    4 out of 5 stars It's a good starting point..........2007-01-05

This book is a well intentioned attempt at explaining the development process. Unfortunately, development is too specific depending on project type and region to be easily summed up in one volume. If you are looking for a lengthy and well detailed process overview, this book is for you. If you need something a little more specific, keep searching and let me know if you find something.

3 out of 5 stars Textbook, Not Real World.......2006-09-06

Coverage of theoretical, not application. Useful for referencing concepts and reinforcing a specific point, but much more of a teaching text than reference material.

2 out of 5 stars worst than boring school text book.......2006-08-11

This book is worst than school text book!!! Don't understand how others rated this book so highly. It is full of principles and theories vs. practicle real life informations. If you want to waste $$ or if your desire is to obtain dry, boring book to help you sleep, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars all about development.......2006-02-25

This book is very helpful to the novice real estate developer or student. It's very clearly written and the information is well ordered. Ideas, concepts and explanantions are well expressed. The glossary is also helpful. Highly recommended.
