Book Description

The well-being of any nonprofit organization rests first with its volunteer board of directors. This book offers board members the guidance they need to successfully govern their organizations--no matter what type or size of nonprofit they may lead.

Written by Candace Widmer and Susan Houchin, The Art of Trusteeship shows you how to fulfill ten key trustee responsibilities and includes much-needed detail on defining mission, strategic planning, executive selection and evaluation, fundraising, financial oversight, and board self-assessment. This hands-on guide is filled with illustrative case studies and real-life examples that clearly show how a variety of creative boards have tackled challenges and strengthened their organizations.

"At last, a book that doesn't take a one-size-fits-all approach! The authors recognize that the huge diversity among nonprofits calls for multiple ways of fulfilling basic board responsibilities. The book allows a board member to dive in at any point and find a concise, clear set of options for handling the challenges of trusteeship. It will help even first-time board members find firm footing on the path to effective governance."
--Sara L. Engelhardt, president, The Foundation Center

This is an excellent study on board leadership and should be read by any person serving on a non-profit board.

5 out of 5 stars A Model for What the Ideal Nonprofit Board Should Do.......2000-11-26

If you are like me, you arrived with no idea of what to do the first time you sat on a nonprofit board. If that board was not well organized, you sat down on your second nonprofit board with about the same level of understanding.

Nonprofit organizations, especially smaller and newer ones, tend to be "amateur hour" operations. They usually have neither good governance nor good management. Unfortunately, they need both much more than most for profit and nonprofit organizations that do have them.

The nonprofit organizations that focus relentlessly on improving governance and management do far more good than those who do not. So these are important subjects. I doubt if you can have very good management without good governance first. Governance creates the organizational direction and the discipline that encourages good management. Unless someone is reviewing how you are doing, even the most talented manager will soon become lazy about learning from experience.

I recommend that anyone who is on a nonprofit board or is considering joining one should read this book. You will have a much more rewarding board experience if you do. You can also share this book with others on the board, and challenge them to work with you to make the needed changes. I certainly plan to do this with the board I sit on now.

By the way, chances are that your board will never quite get to this "gold standard" described here. But at least you will know what you are and are not doing, and can focus on the more important steps.

The book breaks the board's responsibility down into mission, responsibility for money, and for management.

Top priority is "establishing the mission and monitoring the organization's progress in achieving that mission." This may involve modifying the mission from time to time. This is very critical, because you either have a mission that gets volunteers and donors excited or you are dead in the water. Habitat for Humanity and the Girl Scouts have done this well.

The board next needs to create a "vision for the future of the organization and [develop] a plan for achieving that vision."

After that, the board needs to ensure "progress in serving the mission of the organization . . . [in meeting] the needs of clients" and in the effectiveness of programs.

The board also needs to be sure that the mission and programs are communicated "effectively with its various publics."

The money side all fits under being a "steward for organizational resources." The tasks include having a formal development plan, making an annual contribution to the organization, and participating in fund-raising activities. In addition, risks should be identified and ensured and insured against as best as one can.

In the area of management, the board has to select, support, evaluate, (and terminate, when necessary) the CEO. The board has to evaluate its own effectiveness at each meeting, as well.

If your board isn't willing to start working on this items, I suggest you consider looking for another board that is. Certainly, you may be in for a lot of heartache if you a join a board that is going to ignore these areas.

Create more good by having a more effective board!

Book Description

This book provides critical interpretations of international organizations from the perspectives of Marxism, Feminism, Realism, and Liberalism. Using case studies of current crises and events ranging the from Arab and Islamic organizations to the Palestinian uprising to the engineering of Genetically Modified Foods, it is a timely study of how organizations shape and influence world views. Using the perspectives from four approaches, Realism, Liberalism, Marxism, and Feminism, this book uses case studies to illustrate the importance of international organizations and their effect on the world. Topics are reflected by the case studies presented: International Security and the Persian Gulf Crisis and Srebrenica; Regional Security and NATO and the Arab League; Multinational Corporations and the US Clean Air Act and Genetically Modified Foods, Development and the Mexican Peso Crisis and the Indonesian Crisis; the Environment and Global Warming and Whaling; Human Rights and Yugoslavia and Rwanda. For workers in corporations with worldwide interests and for those employed by international organizations.

Recent world events demonstrate the need to understand that there are multiple world views that differ from US liberal world view. The UN and other international organizations are, simultaneously, tools of the great powers (the US), agents of imperialism and promotors of democracy, development and human rights. They also reflect masculine values and strategies. Pease strikes the right balance between the theory and practice of international organizations, although an Islamist world view would be helpful in understanding how the UN, NATO, WTO and the Arab League are perceived outside of the West. I recommend this text to anyone interested in understanding the governance of world affairs using the world views others.

3 out of 5 stars elementary.......2003-02-19

this book assumes that you know nothing of international relations and international organizations. thus, in this context it explains things in a very simple straight forward manner. in addition, pease is repetitive in her analysis of realism, liberalism, marxism and feminism. however, i find that her analysis is limited and fails to take a nuanced approach to the aforementioned theories. in short, her analysis is elementary. i really wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, especially in consideration of the price. to me, a book on international organizations should have a brief theory section, but then examine organizations and their problems in greater depth. furthermore, while reading this book, i was struck with the question of whether or not pease actually wrote this book herself, or if her grad students helped her. there appear to be distinct inconsistencies in writing style between chapters. regardless, this book is mediocre, there are plenty of better scholars.

2 out of 5 stars okay for highschool.......2002-05-07

A noble enterprise indeed, in an understudied field. Theoretical perspectives are the end all and be all of international politics, but Pease's book bites off more than it could ever dream of chewing. Critical theory (Marxist and Feminist) is grossly oversimplified, as she not only leaves the reader with a dearth of literary references to actual writers, but moreover gives these marginal perspectives half the page space that she devotes to Realists and liberals/idealists. The organization of the book, though - offering deductive as well as inductive arguments - is intriguing. The case studies make the book worth buying, though the theoretical synopses that precede them, through questionable portrayals, almost negate their practicality. It is a book without rival only because no one else has undertaken the cause. The book is worth buying, although it is a choice of which Faust himself might approve.

      Book Description

      * How to create policies in line with the political and market realities of one of the world's major natural resources
      * Explains the process and criteria for policy that resolves forest problems and ensures equitable and sustainable use for all those involved
      * The most authoritative study to date, based on extensive worldwide research
      * Essential reading for forest managers in all contexts
      * Foreword by Jag Maini

Forestry issues vary from place to place but the pattern of forest problems is common to most countries – loss of natural forests, centralized control, inequitable access, lack of information and resources, and ossified institutions. Policy is at the root of most of the problems.
This volume offers a thorough analysis of the issues and the options, and the factors that determine different outcomes. It goes on to provide clear and practical advice on how to formulate, manage and implement policies appropriate to different contexts -- policies that result in real improvements in the governance, use and economic benefits that can flow from forests to those who depend upon them.

Through 500 years of foreign domination, Africa has assimilated the world's social, religious, and political waste. This volume of short critical pieces examines contemporary African practices that constitute a new form of political training, one that responds imaginatively and often successfully to the dissolution of the state and the legacies of colonialism.

          Book Description

The Art of Governance is an essential guide for trustees in the performing arts and for the artists, managers, and community leaders who work with them. This book provides the larger context in which trustees govern-the art, artists, history, institutions, and national policies of the performing arts-and also explores more practical issues, such as board development, planning, finance, and fundraising. A wide range of distinguished artists, trustees, managers, and consultants have contributed articles, covering everything from "The Art of Theater" to "Understanding Financial Statements." An invaluable tool for building an enlightened and inspired board, this resource above all recognizes the need of trustees in the performing arts to find a balance between the uncertainty of artistic creativity and the need for fiscal stability.

Editors Nancy Roche and Jaan Whitehead have served on the boards and staff of numerous theater organizations.

Nancy Roche has been a trustee of CENTER-STAGE in Baltimore since 1987, serving as president of the board for seven years and as interim managing director for one year. She has been a consultant on governance for the National Arts Stabilization (now National Arts Strategies), a councilor of the Maryland State Arts Commission from 1992-1999, and has twice served as lay panelist for the NEA. In the summer of 2000, she participated as a theater trustee in the National Critics' Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut, returning in the following summer as a founding member of their week-long Trustees Program. She is a founding member of the National Council for the American Theatre and serves as a trustee and treasurer of the board of Theatre Communications Group. In addition, she serves on the boards of the Roland Park Country School, the Institute for Christian-Jewish Studies, and the Baltimore School for the Arts. She is a graduate of Dominican University and received an MA in teaching and an LLA, both from The Johns Hopkins University.

Jaan Whitehead currently chairs the board of the SITI Company, an ensemble theater in New York led by Anne Bogart. She has served on the boards of The Acting Company, Arena Stage, Living Stage, and The Whole Theatre Company, where her particular interests have been board development and institutional change. She has also been a trustee of Theatre Communications Group and the National Cultural Alliance, an arts advocacy group in Washington, and is a founding member of the National Council for the American Theatre. In addition to her work as a trustee, she has been executive director of Theatre for a New Audience in New York and Development Director of CENTERSTAGE in Baltimore.

Ms. Whitehead graduated from Wellesley College, holds and MA in economics from the University of Michigan, and, early in her career, works as an economist for private industry and the Federal Reserve Board. She received her PhD in political theory fro Princeton in 1988. She taught at Georgetown University for several years but, as her involvement in theater deepened, she made the arts her main work while retaining her interests in economic and political theory. Drawing on this background, she has recently been writing a series of essays on the challenges facing the arts in a commercial society.

          Book Description

In this synthetic, interdisciplinary work, Neil Brenner develops a new interpretation of the transformation of statehood under contemporary globalizing capitalism. Whereas most analysts of the emergent, post-Westphalian world order have focused on supranational and national institutional realignments, 'New State Spaces' shows that strategic subnational spaces, such as cities and city-regions, represent essential arenas in which states are being transformed. Brenner traces the transformation of urban governance in western Europe during the last four decades and, on this basis, argues that inherited geographies of state power are being fundamentally rescaled. Through a combination of theory construction, historical analysis and cross-national case studies of urban policy change, 'New State Spaces' provides an innovative analysis of the new formations of state power that are currently emerging. This is a mature and sophisticated analysis by a major young scholar

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is an astonishing first book.......2005-06-19

It is hard to believe this book is the author's first. This book has the rigor and sweep of a mature scholar, and potentially a major one. Brenner's grasp of the literature of his field is astonishing.

The central argument of the book is also quite solid. Brenner shows that states in the current round of global restructuring (post 1970; also note he refuses to use the term "globalization" for a number of reasons he articulates early in the book) are not withering away, but are rather "re-scaling". Contemporary competitive states advance uneven development (*) to suck down global capital flows, investment, and commenrce, and they do so by articulating uneven legal regimes, infrastructures and much else to create jurisdictions and spaces open to trapping the economy they seek. This argument is made with good social scientific data on a Euroregion between Germany and Holland. The result is a much more nuanced view of contemporary global capitalism than the many people discussing the withering of the nation state provide. The view is dialectical and real.

There are many other areas to discuss in this book, including Brenner's preliminary categories for levels of social theory and their scope. But I do not feel qualified to present many of them, and this review would be too long if I tried.

However, I do wish to note that Brenner's use of boxes and diagrams is helpful and filled with intellectual energy and theoretical perception. Although his work is sometimes too jargon-filled (a common feature of the literature with which he engages), his presentation is clear and exciting. There is a love of making sense of the world here, and pride in good presentation that attests to a genuine teacher and scholar.

Reading this book, I felt I had met with a major new voice in social theory in the broad Marxist tradition. I am excited to see where Brenner goes with his next research.

(*) The adjective "uneven" in the literature Brenner engages concerns the way development occurs unevenly across regions. For instance, in America, our urban areas have become increasingly developed when near major financial, media, informational or legal services, but have deteriorated or lessoned around rural or urban areas formerly based in small agriculture or industry. Industry has gone overseas or south of the border. Moreover, our national policy has been to privilege the developing urban sectors while not spreading development evenly across the country, as happened during the central part of the 20th century.

            Book Description

The purpose of the present volume is to bridge the gap between risk sciences and decision support tools, in view of a better performance in governance. In particular, the main objectives are: to define the knowledge management methods and tools applicable in risk governance; to bring experience from the application of methods and tools available in various disciplines to other fields of risk governance; to determine the present and future needs for knowledge management tools in risk governance; and to promote the development and dissemination of such tools in a problem-solving context and for educational purposes.

This collection of papers addresses questions, and provides tentative answers to issues such as: 'do adequate tools for risk governance exist'; 'are they available to decision-makers'; 'what are the needs of the various stakeholders (i.e. planners, regulators, industry, public) for an effective risk management'; 'what new tools have to be developed in order to cover these needs', and 'what features should they have'. The range of applications and associated decision support tools to address aspects of integrated risk and vulnerability management by use of decision support systems cover numerous disciplines and fields of application including process industry, transportation, natural disasters, emerging risks, critical infrastructures, insurance, and national security related aspects.

              Book Description

Including late-breaking data from the Iraq occupation and the disastrous CBS News reports on Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard Service, acclaimed media scholars Stephen J. Farnsworth and S. Robert Lichter examine news coverage of military policy, economic policy, and scandals from the last four U.S. presidencies, including the current controversial administration. Using a quarter-century of content analysis data, the authors demonstrate how the White House dominates Capitol Hill on every dimension of news coverage, undermining Congress's attempt to compete as a co-equal branch before the public. At the same time, they show how the networks are steadily losing ground to new media outlets and suggest future paths our media mania may take.
