5 out of 5 stars Great book, just takes a lot of time to read!.......2007-07-18

Great book. I got it thinking it'd relate mostly to candle charts. But it covers everything. The book is pretty confusing at first and takes awhile to get used to the author's writing style. He uses words that college business students should understand. It'll take you forever to read, if you want to learn what it has to offer, but it's well worth it. Just google the topics after reviewing to get a full understanding of what Pring offers. Well worth the $10 used price (got lucky!.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for those who try to understand technical analysis.......2007-05-07

I have nothing to say more than what I said in the title , this book is essential for learning technical analysis , no wonder why it's included in most of the reading lists of the technical analysis certificates .

3 out of 5 stars Major Layout Problems!.......2007-03-13

While the book is generally well organized and presents materials helpful to the beginning technical trader in simple terms with examples, visual organization of the book leaves the reader page flipping and frustrated. Rarely are the graphics or charts which are referred to in the text on the same or nearby page. I constantly find myself having to turn pages and search out which chart is being referenced, a very detracting exercise when trying to study technical analysis!

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-03-08

Goes through all the basics of trendlines etc, I really enjoy Pring's writing style and analogy's. This book alone won't turn you into a profitable trader, but will give you the core you need to seek out a good system and understand it.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference; poorly edited.......2005-04-05

Though the book is detailed and fairly comprehensive, the poor editing mars the quality of the book. Even the acknowledgement page contains 4 typos. That is a certain embarrassment. It is difficult to overcome the initial impression of sloppy editing and the book seems to have been rushed to meet some deadlines.

If you can get past the editorial issues, the book is a good collection of almost any interesting technical indicator that is available. While this book cannot be a substitute for the classic book by Murphy on technical investing, it is still a good resource for any investor. Of specific interest to the reader who is already aware of the technical investing (and a Murphy fan), the sections on "psychological strategies" is an interesting read. Other than that the book presents information from a huge variety of sources that has anything to do with indicators and oscillators. If you want to invest in only 1 book on technical investing, the book by Murphy is a better bet, with its better organization, editing and use of examples. This book, however, is a welcome addition, and not necessarily a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Novice at Candlestick Charting.......2007-07-08

Great book, great content. You really need to absorb the direction of the method by reading this book 2 - 3 times. This isn't because of poor writing. This book is well written. It is due to the mindset required to fully understand the patterns for a novice like myself. I did find that it is one more tool to use to validate a trend or reversal. it has helped me with more than one profitable decision.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2007-06-09

Morris' explanation of the candlestick system for analysis of stock price trends is very thorough and easy to understand. Remembering all of the patterns is a bit overwhelming, but you do begin to develop a sense of what the candlesticks are saying that eventually makes understanding the patterns easier.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic tool for learning to use Candlesticks.......2007-04-17

I am quite surprised at how useful the book is for my trading. I'm currently a day trader that trades momentum. I have been starting to use Candlesticks in the last year or two to try to enhance my entries and exits. My profitable trade percentages are increasing and my trade exit timeliness is getting better (thanks to candlesticks). The whole candlestick concept was hard for me to swallow but the more I got into it, I realized it was a visual pattern recognition concept. The book does a great job of explaining all of the useful candlestick formations as well as backing the explanations up with examples. I really liked the second half of the book that did a very thorough statistical analysis of the candlestick signals over multiple timeframes. I learned alot from the book and will add its extensive data into my stock trading techniques. Well done....

5 out of 5 stars Great Candlestick analysis.......2007-03-09

Great book if you are learning about candlesticks as well as chart patterns: Reversal, continuations, etc. Detailed explanation, statistics and more...
I found it really helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Candlesticks Made Moderately Easy.......2004-01-13

Good book for someone who doesn't know anything about candlesticks, but I think you need to have some sort of understanding of investing before reading this book. The reason why I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 star was because this is the first book on candlestick I've read. I haven't read another book yet on this topic.

Read this book the first time when I bought it several months ago and got a glazed over look in my eyes because I had no clue about any of it. However, as I let some months pass by and got better with my technical analysis utilizing other charts like MACD, stochastics, MA, BOP, TSV, MS, etc....the terminology and how the market moves allowed me to better understand what I was reading in Morris' book.

It would've been nice if he had a simplified table of the various individual candlesticks and what they represented and another table of the reversal patterns in bull & bear markets.

I like how the chapters were formatted in the reversal chapter. This was a long chapter and probably could've been broken down into shorter chapters to better categorize various reversals.

I have been able to validate some of the reversals by experience. I wasn't sure if I was reading the candlesticks correctly and went against what I read. The candlesticks were correct and I was wrong. Good thing I am learning about this when I don't have lots of money to lose yet.

All in all, I will read this book to glean even more information from it. I've already read it twice.

5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU`LL NEED.......2003-12-15

I have read some negative comments here about this book not being detailed enough etc... but it gives very clear, understandable explanations of all the patterns, and they are all grouped in an excellent orderly easy to find fashion. Other books of this kind may be a bit more detailed but they are a difficult dry read, far too lenthy and not as organized nor as well written. Greg morris delivers all the neccessary goods in this book.

5 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN.......2003-12-08

This book is an excellent reference for all the candlestick patterns. I like the fact that it has a pattern breakdown for every formation and also data on how well the patterns perform as far as accuracy at the end of the book. The descriptions are clear, concise and very well organized with great illustrations and psychological explanations behind the candlestick moves. I found this book an easier more understandable read than nison`s books on candlesticks and for less than half the price. I keep this book close by whenever i need to review a certain pattern, its very easy to flip through and find any of the formations since they are all neatly grouped by category, which i like. I think its the best.

5 out of 5 stars at the price the best.......2002-08-16

A great question is which is better: Nison or Morris? Nison is for those who use indicators; Morris is the purist using only volume.
Reference book? Morris gives you the picture and the explanation in an easy format and an index to find it. He also breaks the candles into groups and types. This is the valuable part of the book.
Who is more in depth? Well that's a tie with Morris winning slightly on candles & losing if you want to view the whole Japanese charting world, Kagi, Renko, 3 line break. Nison gives other Japanese charting types weight in the book which is good if you have Metastock bad if you don't. Personally I like the other methods.
So why did I give Morris the nod? As a professional trader I can't really give away an edge except that Morris is more tuned towards stocks & gives hints that Nison did not.
Nison is also a boring writer, better lecturer. Morris is a better writer, teacher.
Remember Morris gives you everything and if that's not enough then you're not reading carefully; looking over these previous reviews makes me happy because they obviously missed Morris' hints and guides. I saw them and my trading improved & I had used Candles for a long time before getting to Morris ala Nison & began to think them worthless. Now I understand their role.

Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars Right idea poorly executed.......2002-07-21

Mr. Morris did wonderful research on technical trading and clearly knows what the charts are about. Morris goes on to clearly discuss that the difference between using technical analysis and using it well is understanding the philosophy of the market, the specific pattern and the interpretation of that, not simply by saying yes this is a buy signal because of the specific pattern but rather because of the physicology behind it and feeling that went with it. He fails to execute what he claims he will do in his introduction. I would save your money and not waste trying to struggle to unearth whatever little advice Morris gives.

Book Description

Expert advice in a back-to-basics handbook on how to beat the market-the classic way

In Investment Psychology Explained Martin J. Pring, one of the most respected independent investment advisors in the world, argues that in the revisionist '90s there are no quick, magical paths to market success. Rather, he emphasizes the timeless values of hard work, patience, and self-discipline-and much more. Drawing on the wisdom of creative investors such as Jesse Livermore, Humphrey Neill, and Barnard Baruch, as well as his own experience, Pring shows how to:
* Overcome emotional and psychological impediments that distort decision making
* Map out an independent investment plan-and stick to it
* Know when to buck herd opinion-and "go contrarian"
* Dispense with the myths and delusions that drag down other investors
* Resist the fads and so-called experts whose siren call to success can lead to disaster
* Exploit fast-breaking news events that rock the market
* Deal skillfully with brokers and money managers
* Learn and understand the rules that separate the truly great investors and traders from the rest

Reading Investment Psychology Explained will give you a renewed appreciation of the classic trading principles that, through bull and bear markets, have worked time and again. You'll see, with the help of numerous illustrative examples, what goes into making an effective investor-and how you can work toward achieving that successful profile.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Heavy reading, but worth it........2007-04-01

This is a more advanced strategy based bible for the busy trader and the mindset involved. I bought this one along with Trading in the Zone and found the two of them compliment each other quite nicely. He covers a wide range of philosophies from the greats, and helps you see through the problems of over trading today with an overload of access to information, and a media full of pump and dump charlatans.

3 out of 5 stars Knowing yourself.......2006-03-23

A serious trader or investor can never dismiss this book. It's a must read considering there are not very many investment psychology books written with a comprehensive coverage. And if you know Pring's background and have read more of his books, you will understand this work better. He has done a good work in nailing the points of Investment psychology specially by dedicating a section on "Knowing yourself". Easily one of the best books written on the subjet. One reading is not enough if you want to really get "IT".

3 out of 5 stars Good read but not very useful for beginners.......2005-02-04

This book utilizes the historical events of various markets (mostly the US stock market) to explain various behaviours of market participants. The information is concise and each chapter deliver its points clearly. Part 3 of the book even list the trading rules of various well known authors/traders so that the readers can feel the importance of discipline as these well known individuals have to list a set of rules to remind themselves what not to do.
One thing I do not like are quoted results from research on trader psychology. The conclusions mentioned do not really sound very scientific nor making any sense. e.g. only "successful" traders are studied and conclusion is made without mentioning any similar study to prove such quality do not exist on "unsucessful" traders.
Overall, this is a good read for someone who already have experience in trading the market and would like to start learning something about the psychology aspect of trading. It will not be useful at all for a beginner who has not experience the emotional ups and downs related to trading, as the beginner is not likely to be able to connect with the content at all.

4 out of 5 stars A book of books! Wide but sufficiently deep.......2004-08-16

I had read over a hundred trading books by far and written many reviews here on Amazon. This is the first time I used the term "book of books" to tell how far an author had tried to incorporate the trading ideas/concepts/rules of other gurus into his book. I dont mean that this book is simply a product of copy and paste. I believe the author had the good intention of covering as many "classic" strategies as possible to deliver the promise of the book title to his readers. In my opinion, most of the essential trading psychology concepts had been there.

This book is divided into three main parts. The first one tries to break popular trading misconceptions/errors with topics like no holy grail, myth of expert, marketitis (overtrading), tickeritis (too close to a quote screen), price-news drug effect (too easy access to prices, news and analyses), damage from tips or rumors, cult of guru, greener pastures effect (survival bias of industry funds), pride of opinion, specific difficulties facing successful businessmen and so on. The second part is about contrary opinion. Historical big crashes are discussed, as well as means to avoid or even profit from them. The third part is primarily rules and regulations of legends like Warren Buffet, John Templeton, Paul Tudor Jones, Bernard Baruch, W.D. Gann etc, and those developed by the author himself.

I agree with some reviewers that the author's writing is quite dry. To me, that's acceptable because it's not easy to elaborate with vivid words and stories, or the book will be far more than 265 pages. It would be eye opening for those who had read less than three trading psychology books. For serious trader readers, this book is still satisfying with the opportunities provided for the traders' own health check. Not a must, but certainly a valuable asset in one's own trading library.

Warning: Though my comment above is quite positive, please take this as a reference book only before you completely understand yourself and your best trading style. Otherwise, the third part of the book may lead you to become a Jack of all trades and thus meat for your fellow traders/investors.

3 out of 5 stars Valid info, but dry.......2001-08-20

This book was required reading for a course I am taking, so maybe I remembered how I felt when I had to read "Silas Marner" in high school english. I found the book contained valid points about the psychology of trading which would be helpful to someone who was just entering the world of trading, but it seemed very dry reading to me, and repetitive. Much of it was rules for trading taken from other peoples books, and after awhile you got the feeling that you had just finished reading these rules, several times. I am currently reading "The Mind of a Trader" by Alpesh Patel, which is a similar type book (and also required reading), but somehow more readable.

    Book Description

In its fourth edition, Economics Explained continues its announced purpose -- to explain that mysterious thing called economics. But there is a new urgency to the book. It is announced in the first sentence of the introduction: "Just in case the reader-to-be hasn't noticed, disturbing things are going on in the American economy these days."

This new edition is about these disturbing things: a trend toward inequality of incomes, the appearance of a new "globalized" capitalism, the "specter" of inflation. As before, Robert Heilbroner and Lester Thurow treat these problems in language that seeks to make clear their causes and treatments. In this straightforward, highly accessible reference, Heilbroner and Thurow -- two of America's most respected and articulate economists -- offer all the economics essential for becoming an effective investor, a savvy business decision maker, or simply an informed member of society.

    5 out of 5 stars economics explained.......2007-09-30

I ordered the wrong book so I never used this book. However, the supplier was very easy to work with.

4 out of 5 stars the hobo philosopher.......2007-06-27

This is an excellent introduction to today's economics. It covers the basics like supply and demand, inflation, savings and investment, but also covers more modern concepts like privatization and the public sector, globalization and money and banking. It touches on a few traditional economic personalities - Smith, Marx and Keynes. It discusses the national debt and deficit spending and all the major things most people are talking about in today's average world. If you know nothing about economics but want to learn, this is the book for you. If you know all about economics but want to review the basics this book is for you. This book even discusses the ethics and morality of our modern day capitalism which I thought was rather refreshing.

3 out of 5 stars not so great.......2005-05-05

I'll tell you what this book is: it's a primer on financial markets for people who already have a strong background in economics (say, college courses in micro and macro) and are looking to transmute that knowledge into the kind of practical know-how that will help them make money with their investments.

The authors do not specifically recommend specific investments or brokerage houses, no; it's more of a general review of economics, though with a constant view towards putting that knowledge into practical and profitable use in a variety of situations.

Well, once you understand that, the book isn't so great, despite one of the authors (Heilbroner) being just famous for his excellent "The Worldly Philosophers." Plus the thing's out of date, being (among other things) pre-tech bubble burst.

However, I can help you: if you need a book that does what this book is trying to do, perhaps the best one I know of is "How the Economy Works," by Edmund A. Mennis. Also immensely useful is the "Guide to Economic Indicators" by the editors of the British magazine, the Economist (also useful for Americans). Both are available on Amazon.

If, however, you are merely looking for an entertaining and informative precis of contemporary economic issues and aren't planning on doing anything knowledge-requiring with your money, this book simply will not do. The writing is stuffy, the coverage is incomplete, and the explanations are way too elliptical for a novice.

For this last purpose, seek out instead Charles Wheelan's "Naked Economics."

5 out of 5 stars Remove the mystique and the mysteries.......2005-04-22

The authors don't dodge controversial issues and choose sides in this superbly written book.
They show profusely that economics is mainly about capitalism and the costs and benefits of economic freedom.
One of the essential issues in economics is the tension between the claims of efficiency and justice, between conservatives and liberals. But they draw the line between disagreement and sheer incomprehension.
Their cause is the liberal one: the government can add to the growth of GNP.
But frankly not in the way the actual government is doing it by 'cost overruns in defense programs' (a massive part of the federal budget), instead of investing in infrastructure, R & D and, most importantly, in education.

They fustigate supply-side economics (serving all wealthy taxpayers, but pulling the rug under the feet of the needy), or Milton Friedman's 'Doing Nothing'.
On the Negative Income Tax solution they remark: 'That may accord with our Sunday morality, but not with our workday morality.'

By the way, this book is a clearly explained textbook on economics (macro and micro, money-banks-gold, consuming-saving-investing, big and small businesses, GNP, income distribution, externalities, rationing ...)
    The index is superb.

It ends with a severe warning: 'Having fallen behind, we will stay behind.'

If you should read one book about economics, this is it: a magisterial course, even for economists.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to brush up or begin your econ studies.......2004-04-22

I really admire this writer a great deal because he has a gift for making complex concepts clear as crystal. I don't know about you, but I am sick of overly sarcastic or "humorous" approaches to series topics - the whole "atomic fusion for dummies" style of writing. I find a clear, insightful explanation entertaining enough, thanks. When I read this book, I found it thrilling because all the basic economic principles we all live with everyday (but so often are clouded in mystery) suddenly opened up before me because of the author's clarity.

It is true that Mr. Heilbroner is a liberal\democratic leaning economist. He admits that up front, however, in the introduction, and he promises the reader that all points of view in the book will be clearly marked as opinion and never given as fact. I should say that I lean to the right heavily, and I did not find this book unfair or overly biased at all. If you are a conservative like me, do not omit this book because of the author's stated economic preferences. It is a wonderful book full of deep insights and observations, written for serious grown-ups looking for an introduction into the fascinating world of economics. --Mykal Banta

3 out of 5 stars Decent Study Guide for Fans of the Main Hardcover.......2006-05-11

For those who enjoyed the "Technical Analysis Explained" by Pring, but want to know if they can recall some of the facts, this is a great accompaniment, whether for an examination or just for some fun. (For CMT and CFT Level 1, this book would not help much, as the exam questions do not cover much charting, despite assigning the main text book as core reading). The multiple choice style questions cover nearly all chapters. There are around 10 to 20 questions per chapter, which implies that one can finish the entire quiz book within a day. At $20, it is a bit on the expensive side, hence my low valuation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent start on Technical Analysis.......2005-12-19

Many of the reviewers for the hardback mentioned typos etc. I have the inexpensive International Edition (paperback) and didn't notice anything significant.

Anyhow, I found this book to be one of the best books on TA as it covers all the supporting theories of TA - not just the usual studies on momentum and price indicators.
It covers business-cycle theory & Dow theory, as well as some other wave theories towards the end.

Overall, the book's structure has been planned very well (and this is unusual for most books on TA). It aims to explain the relevance of technical analysis before taking you briefly into each topic. This helps place everything into perspective and avoids the reader from getting 'lost' in all the technicalities.
It can also help you understand the link between Fundamental Analysis and Technical Analysis.

Like all TA books, it won't give you the complete answer to the markets, but combine this with some other more detailed reference books and it will serve it's purpose.

I'm quite pleased with the material presented in this book and the clarity with which it is presented. I don't know how much credit to give to Mr. Pring versus the charting method he illuminates, but Pring makes candlestick charting entirely accessible to any reader possessing the intellectual tools requisite for competent analysis and trading. To be certain, I'm much impressed with some of the advantages candlestick charting provides the trader over conventional western charting and so a good part of my favorable impression of this book may lie in my approval of the techniques that Pring describes.

My own trading style relies somewhat on technical analysis but is also heavily influenced by fundamentals and market psychology. What I found most attractive in Pring's candlesticks was the way in which he focused on what this or that pattern revealed about the attitudes of market participants not just from day to day, but more importantly during the day. As a swing trader, I find this approach absolutely essential in detecting shifts in sentiment on a relatively short term basis, but in a broader context than within the electronic strictures of pure day trading.

Above all else, I give Pring credit for simplifying this analytical technique down to its basic components and including excellent descriptions and charts. While I'm inclined to conclude that most Technical Analysis books are overpriced, I believe that any book that can give the trader reliable new tools is ultimately worth the price. I believe this book fits in that category. I recommend this volume to anyone who desires more than rudimentary knowledge of candlestick charting. I doubt that any discussion of candlestick charting extending beyond Pring's teaching would really add much to the topic. I highly recommend this particular volume.
