Book Description

Applauded for providing the most clear and accurate presentation of advanced microeconomic concepts, Walter Nicholson brings us Microeconomic Theory: Basic Principles and Extensions, 8e . It gives readers the opportunity to work directly with theoretical tools, real-world applications, and cutting edge developments in the study of microeconomics. Reviewers exclaim, "Nicholsons text is solid, rigorous and comprehensive. It is sensibly challenging for students, best serving students with a mathematics background, and absolutely essential for those who are preparing for graduate studies in economics."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good intermediate micro.......2007-04-24

This book is very well structured and makes your troubled economist life easier. You definitely need math knowledge but Nicholson explains difficult concepts in a masterful and understandable manner, so the ideas are easier to understand. I would say it is between Varian and Mas Colell. The first part is abundant in relevant examples (it somehow dwindles after) and the questions at the end of the chapters are quite useful.

4 out of 5 stars Very good intermediate book.......2006-12-21

It is very good textbook to learn microeconomics with intuitions and methodology. But, some people are comparing this book with Mas Colell. Nonsense! Mas Colell is a PhD level, pretty technical, "heavy duty" book. This book is an intermediate level book for senior undergrads or master students. On the other hand, Binger&Hofmann's Microeconomics with Calculus book is better then this, in my opinion. It has less story more information. This book spends lots of lines to explain some small points which is boring for someone who should know these stories before starting graduate studies. But it is more comprehensive than baby Varian. Some departments are using Pyndick's book, but I didn't use it. I believe that Binger&Hofmann is the best in this category if you wanna learn Microeconomics using mathematical tools.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good book........2006-11-10

the shipping was alright.. the book is new and pretty good. happy with it overall..=)

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Overview of Micro Theory.......2006-11-10

After using this book for a math-intensive micro theory course, I would heartily recommend Nicholson's text, which is written clearly with relevant examples and straightforward, useful problems at the end of each chapter. The book is very math-intense and requires a good knowlege of multivariable calculus, but since the reader is probably buying this book for a class, he or she most likely already has the mathematics background necessary. Thumbs up.

3 out of 5 stars Not such an easy read.......2006-10-18

Okay book, not the best read, but better than the Mas-Collel green books. This book gives a lot of info on theory but I thought it lacked wrt practical (applied examples). Used for a graduate level course in Micro Econ. My particular course is very hard (this class serves both graduate and PhD Finance students) so needless to say, I am ordering the workbook to help me survive!

5 out of 5 stars Carver guides are very god for the non profit board.......2005-07-20

This is the secong not-for-profit organization that I have directed. I have used this guide and the subsequent Carver guides to help with organizing and direction setting. Volunteer board members always respond well to the material. It is easy to understand yet the Carver model is very comprehensive. I would recommend this to any organization that is engaged in charitable work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Carver's Policy Governance theory ........1998-10-30

This first in a 12-part series of general guides on Policy Governance is a great introduction to author John Carver's new approach to nonprofit board development. Basically, this approach clearly separates the roles of board and staff as they go about their separate but related jobs of organizational governance and management. Policy Governance clarifies these roles through policy development and permits the board---governing as a body---to control the management and direction of the organization in a global policy approach. This guide is a good start in grasping the concepts of the approach.

Teachers in business schools will find this book can serve as an excellent supplemental textbook on consulting practices.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Consulting Tool.......2006-03-16

I am in agreement with the review written by Margaret Neale of Stanford University in that this book is able to effectively travel the distance between novice and experienced consultants alike. This will certainly prove to be an excellent consulting tool for everyone and anyone who reads and embracing the lessons within The Basic Principles of Effective Consulting. I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Book.......2006-03-08

Great book! I liked how the book goes through each step of the consulting process. Follow the steps and you can't go wrong. Probably the best feature is the practical advice given in each of the chapters. For example, the authors tell you what questions to ask in the first meeting with a client, how to write a successful proposal and contract, how to conduct interviews, how to collect data, how to present your results, and a ton of other very helpful information. I also liked the brief pieces of advice given by expert consultants that appear in every chapter. No question in my mind that if you follow the process and advice in this book you will have a very successful consulting practice. This one's a keeper!

2 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book.......2006-06-17

A bunch of junk. Not any of the really meaty excersises. An excuse for the auhor to make money.

3 out of 5 stars Nice ideas....missing something(s).......2006-06-14

I bought the book to get some inspiration for excercises I could use.

It does cover te DMAIC series and shines light from different directions. Which is good as it covers many areas involved in improvement projects. I feel that the begin of the book is stronger then the end of the book.

There is one area I miss in the Analyse area. It doesn't touch base at all on the use of ishikawa diagrams, fmea etc. It focusses more on the data in this area. Data is important, however the underlying cause can be a bit further away.

The further I get in the book the more I miss.

Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Great book of games.......2005-09-26

The book is excelente because the most of time, we as a trainers, we didn't have enough exercises in group in the six sigma trainings and the courses could be boring to the students. However with a learning material like the contents of this book fills this gap for us, the trainers.

Best regards

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for MBB Instructors.......2005-03-23

This book was just right for us. It had the right mix of exercises that made the DMAIC steps more fun to teach and ensured that the class got engaged with the material.

I liked the fact that it also had exercises on Change Management and Team Dynamics

What I found most useful was the website that gives all datasets and template which made preparation for the exercises a breeze.

Here is the website it would be hard to use without the book but you can go take a look and see if has stuff that interests you.

    Book Description

Fifteen years ago, a U.S. high school diploma was a ticket to the middle class. No longer. The skills required to earn a decent income have changed radically. The skills taught in most U.S. schools have not. Today the average 30-year-old person with a high school diploma earns $20,200, and the nation faces a future of growing inequality and division. Teaching the New Basic Skills shows how to avoid such a future. By telling stories of real people in real businesses and real schools, the book shows the skills students need to get decent jobs and how schools can change to teach those skills. Richard Murnane and Frank Levy begin by describing the hiring processes of best practice firms like Northwestern Mutual Life and Honda of America. In today's competitive economy, these firms search for applicants with the New Basic Skills -- the mix of hard and soft skills that all high-wage employers now require. Murnane and Levy then shift their analysis to schools, asking how they can more effectively teach these New Basic Skills. By using case studies the authors show that popular school reform proposals -- higher standards, school choice, national standards, charter schools, more money -- can only be the first half of a solution to the nation's school problem. When they work as advertised, they force a school to change the way it does business. But each of these reforms needs a second half, a strategy for guiding schools toward the changes that raise student skills. The authors show how that strategy rests on five management principles that focus a school on student achievement. These principles grow out of the experiences of real schools doing the dirty work of educational reform: an elementary school in East Austin, Texas organizing low-income Hispanic parents around higher educational performance, an affluent New England community retraining its teachers, the state of Vermont devising new ways to measure the math skills employers require, a Boston high school creating incentives for low-income minority students to devote more time and attention to schoolwork. Superintendents, governors and business leaders agree on the importance of this book as evidenced in the forewords by Robert Galvin, Chairman of Motorola, and Thomas Payzant, school superintendent of Boston. For those who care about the success of U.S. schools, Teaching the New Basic Skills is an optimistic guide to the future and a must read.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on education reform.......1997-11-07

This is an excellent and realistic book, with no quick fix solutions. It shows that schools need to teach not only basic math and reading, but also the ability to work in groups and to communicate effectively, as well as to solve problems. High school graduates need these skills to get good jobs. Simple solutions such as charter schools, choice, and more tests will not suffice. Hard work and perseverence at the local school level is needed.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but like many others on education, unrealistic........1997-08-19

This book is about what it takes to get a good job in manufacturing (Honda, for example) or services (insurance) and how the schools are failing to provide students with the "new basic skills" which will enable them to get these jobs. The analysis of what's wrong is similar to other analyses, and it is accurate: the average high school graduate doesn't know very much and doesn't really care that he doesn't know much. My quarrel with this book is that the authors underestimate the difficulty of changing the situation. Improving operations at Honda in Marysville, Ohio, is NOT the same thing as trying to produce high quality students. Schools have become social service agencies, and learning enough to get a good job at Honda is only one of many purposes the schools serve, and on any given day it may not be the most important

This is a college level textbook for complete beginners in the field of Real Estate and specifically Real Estate Appraisal. As such, it gives a nice overview of the profession and of appraisal techniques and not a whole lot more. To get more in depth to the level of feeling professionally competent, you will need to add on with other books and classes. But this is a very good start.

2 out of 5 stars Some other books are better than this one.......2004-03-09

I don't know why colleges use this book as a required textbook. This book is DEFINITELY not a good book for someone who is new to real estate apraisal. The book did't explain things very clear especially some very important things like "Highest and Best Use". There are some other book that explain the real estte concepts better than this one. You definitely will not pass the real estate appraisal exam if you only read this book

    3 out of 5 stars RE Appraisal.......2001-11-14

This is a great book that is used in some of the colleges for textbook. It explains the fundamentals of real estate appraisal by using pratical examples which we may experience everyday. In addition, it clearly shows the calculations, number by number with detailed explainations to make the readers easy to understand the concepts. It really helped me a lot in the real estate business.

This user-friendly guide explains economic concepts and principles in a lively, informative way. Clear and easy-to-understand definitions and explanations, with examples that relate to issues and problems relevant to teenagers, will help students gain a better understanding of economics. In 15 chapters, the guide covers all the basic information students need to understand the basic concepts and principles of economics, including: definition of economics in historical context; how various economics systems work; how prices are set in the U.S. economy; consumer behavior; factors of production; types of businesses; competition in the marketplace; the functions of money; banking and credit; types of investments; the federal budget and taxation; federal monetary and fiscal policies; income distribution in the United States; labor and management issues; international trade. Each chapter explores a key question in economics, is illustrated with graphs and tables, and features the latest economic data. Profiles of the major economic thinkers who influenced thinking on concepts and principles provide historical context. In addition to improving students' conceptual understanding, the guide also encourages critical thinking by investigating controversial issues related to topics as varied as the minimum wage, the decay of our natural environment, poverty, and business ethics of multinational corporations. An extensive glossary of key economic concepts, terms, and institutions is a handy tool. Unlike cut-and-dried, difficult to follow reference works on economics, this guide, designed and written especially for students, will help readers better understand economic information and issues.

        Book Description

The first attempt to address comparative property law in a common integrative framework, this study discusses German, Italian, French, American, and British property law as mere variations based upon a few fundamental themes through which these nations developed legal systems to provide responses to common economic problems and to set legal foundations for working markets. Basic Principles of Property Law was produced to offer a common framework for the discussion of the law of property within countries in transition, thus it has its basis, not on just one legal system, but on the institutional commonalties that make western property law a working market institution. It offers a major challenge to conventional thinking that in property law the differences between common law and civil law are so important that "common core" research is impossible. Mattei hopes to guide the reader to think comparatively about property by shedding many preconceived formalistic abstractions. The substance of property law, he argues, is much more common throughout the Western legal tradition than legal scholars would have us believe. Through a set format and accessible writing, this book looks at national legal traditions as responses to common economic problems. It sets the foundations for further much needed integrative comparative legal research in the domain of property law.

The best-selling power system operation manual ever published--NOW IN AN ALL-NEW EDITION! For over 30 years more electrical power professionals have used this guide for safe, economical system operation than any other in print. Why? Because Power System Operation, by Robert Miller and James Malinowski, presents more of the fundamental principles and methods dispatchers and operators need in a clear, easy-to-understand style. Now this third edition has been expanded by 50% to cover even more: VAR flows; Power system control; Telemetering methods; Supervisory control and data acquisition methods; System control, protection and stability; System reliability factors, Power system energy transfer; Energy accounting in interconnected operations; Operating systems most economically; EHV operation; Power system communications; Impedance of parallel circuits; Effects of resistance on impedance.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Practice book.......2007-07-09

Power System Operation is an important book for people that operate grids. It could be a support for electric engineering students.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to Power System Ops.......2005-10-23

I purchased this book because it was reccommended reading for NERC certification. To pass that exam, it is enough to spend 3-5 days studying the NERC operating manual. There were no questions from either this book or the others reccommended for the exam.

With that out of the way, I thought Power System Operations covered a nice range of topics concisely and in non-technical terms. It is not comprehensive enough to be a good reference book once you become knowledgable in this area. The material is not presented with mathematical rigor. However, if you work for a utility, and are seeking a non-intimidating introduction to power system ops, this book is perfect. As a sidenote: There is also a wealth of information available on the reliability region and ISO websites that will complement this text.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Primer for Load Dispatchers.......2003-07-09

Part of my job with a large midwestern power company is to train load dispatchers. I'm constantly on the lookout for good material. Power System Operations by Miller is one of the best textbooks I've found to train non-degreed system operators. I used the first edition myself when I was a new load dispatcher, and I found it to be a great self-study guide.

One problem with the latest (third) edition, there are no answers provided for the questions at the end of the chapter. This is no problem if the book is used in a classroom as the instructor should be able to figure them out. But for self-study it is absolutely necessary for the publisher to provide the answers to the chapter tests. Also, there are a few typos in the chapter on reactive power that could be very misleading to students who are already struggling.

The book concentrates mainly on transmission but the first four chapters are useful for distribution dispatchers as well. They provide a good foundation for teaching system overview, AC fundamentals and reactive power. The chapters on protective relaying, while still giving a basic overview of the various schemes, are a bit dated because they don't cover some of the latest microprocessor-based relays that have been replacing the electro-mechanical ones over the past several years.

This is not the be-all and end-all for training system operators, but when combined with on-the-job training and other supplementary material it can help establish a solid training program.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent developmental tool for Power System Operators.......1998-04-20

Power System Operation provides a well structured knowledge base and reference for the new and seasoned power system operator. It will serve as the foundational and theoretical basis for many of the experienced based knowledge that is passed from operator to operator. I would recommend that all power system operators be equipped with this book as must read material.
