Book Description

Inventory accuracy starts with an understanding of the conditions under which errors occur and ends with error-resistant processes, intelligent use of technology, a well-trained and highly motivated workforce, and an ongoing process of continuous improvement. In between, there's cycle counting, root cause analysis, process evaluation, user interface design, procedures, employee training, accountability, control methods, process checks, audits, exception reporting, transaction techniques, measurement, counting methods, bar codes, RF systems, speech-based technology, light systems, and software.

Inventory Accuracy: People, Processes, & Technology covers all of these topics and more in a comprehensive treatment of the subject of inventory accuracy in distribution, fulfillment, and manufacturing environments. In addition to documenting the standard tools and techniques used to achieve accuracy, the author provides insights as to why many of the standard solutions don't provide the best results and offers alternative methods. The focus on practical solutions that take into account the sometimes-conflicting priorities that affect accuracy, results in an approach that not only looks good on paper, but more importantly, works in the real world.

1 out of 5 stars A very, very basic book...there has to be better.......2007-05-28

This book is very basic and appears to be very dated. Several times I had to look at the copyright date to ensure it wasn't that hold. With a copyright date of 2003, I thought it would contain more up-to-date information. If you want very, very basic information, than buy this book. If you are already in warehouse distribution, this book will not help you at all. The advice that is given is so basic and not very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Inventory Accuracy 101.......2007-01-23

Book is written using easy to understand terminolgy. Glossary was invaluable tool.

5 out of 5 stars Piasecki is the Man.......2007-01-04

David Piasecki is a very knowledgable fellow. But more importantly, he has the ability to communicate like an average Joe, not some academic.

This book is easy to read, and has lots of funny cartoons anyone dealing with warehousing or inventory can appreciate.

As far as actual content, Piasecki discusses what works, what works better, and the reasoning behind all of this. His many years of experience clearly shine through in this read.

Check out his website too, it has alot of useful information that compliments the book.

5 out of 5 stars Inventory Accuracy in action.......2006-09-21

As a cost analyst for a mid-sized manufacturer, I found this book invaluable for setting up analyses of cycle counts, and it was THE guide for putting together a full physical count process when our parent company demanded it. It's a pleasure to read (yes, this, a book on managing inventory, is a PLEASURE to read!); Piasecki's take on what a physical count is REALLY like is priceless. He really has a complete grasp of what it means to have human beings managing inventory. See his chapter on what machines and humans each do best.

5 out of 5 stars Takes a dfficult subject and make it easy to understand..........2005-10-05

Fantastic and essential resource for those wishing to understand and implement inventory accuracy and cycle counting in their business practices.

Book Description

Comprehensive Introduction to Manufacturing Management text covering the behavior laws at work in factories. Examines operating policies and strategic objectives. Hopp presents the concepts of manufacturing processes and controls within a "physics" or "laws of nature" analogy--a novel approach. There is enough quantitative material for an engineer's course, as well as narrative that a management major can understand and apply.

5 out of 5 stars Theoretical background for Operations Management - setting a new standard.......2006-10-03

This book provides you with the fundamental insights of manufacturing and assembly. Even though I do not like statistics to much, the book is written in a understandable manner and provides the fundamental knowledge to understand what is going on in manufacturing. Based on this knowledge, the flaw of MRP-systems are even explained as well as the basics of JIT/Lean. The book provides mainly the hardfacts of this science and for practical people, reading first Quick-Response-Manufacturing (from Rajan Suri) might be the easier way for many of us and gives you the motivation to take a deeper look later on - as provided by Factory Physics.

Factory Physics describes not only how to describe a single workstation and the interactions between many of them, than as well the great importance of variability reduction in a production line and how to analyse it. CONWIP-lines, as a mix of push-pull, are a central key in this book and a simple way to analyse the performance of any system is provided by the book. This book, together with Quick-Response-Manufacturing (this book includes important softfactores as well) have changed drastically my way of operational thinking and given me a sense, which system to apply (QRM or JIT/Lean) and why. The insight can even be used for services as well. One central point is the utilisation of a workstation and the knowledge, that the more you reduce variability in arrivals and processing, the higher the utilisation can be - still achieving low lead times. You will find as well important and simple laws helping you out in the daily business (Little's law and queueing theory).

As for JIT/Lean, lead time reduction can use the same japanese tools:

- SMED: setup-time reduction (lot sizes for reduction in lead time and WIP)
- TPM: productive maintenance (higher machine availability and decrease of variability)
- ZQC: fool-proof quality inspection for Zero defects (against capacity lost and to decrease variability)

All the books mentionned above, have a big advantage over traditional SCM-books: they provide you with a framework how to trim a single chain-element of the supply-chain and therefore how to built the whole supply chain. The operational strategy should be derived from the overall company strategy and with this new insights you can tailor a unique production system that fits your company's goals - or even give you an advantage over your competition. Anyway, it will not make obsolet the importance of having a sound and consistant overall business strategy (for your markets) first!

Enjoy reading, Best Regards

5 out of 5 stars written with the heart of a teacher.......2006-03-13

Though the two authors are consultants, they are foremost - teachers. What is useful, and kind to a degree, is they put an effort to explain the numbers as pragmatic as possible. That idea made this book very accessible. To the industrial engineers or those who are involved (and passionate) in operations or in understanding systems - next to the Industrial Engineering Handboook, this should be in our library.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional enlightened and insightful!.......2006-02-18

I found this book to be very insightful. It helps to explain many of my own observations in my factory. The authors did an excellent job of explaining the key concepts using only average use of mathematics and in simple layman's terms. The readers will only need basic mathematics/beginner calculus, and basic statistics. Reading it was like discovering new ideas to implement in the factory to quickly realize efficiencies and cost savings. It was one of the best books I have laid eyes on in a very long time.

I highly recommend this book for every mfg and production engineers working in assembly or automation-driven factory. This book is not applicable to chemical processing, thus may not bring significant values to chemical or petroleum engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and valuable book.......2005-12-23

This is the best course textbook I have had so far over about ten industrial engineering courses (and I have had some very good textbooks and courses). The book basically describes how to analyze and improve manufacturing operations through examining key areas that include: variability and its sources, push and pull systems, and supply chain management.

The authors approach is to present ideas in a very clear and relevant way. What I particularly like is that they do a great job putting things into perspective in a style that is highly readable. While there is some math involved if one wants to delve into the details that are in side notes, a basic understanding of calculus is more than sufficient. The authors are clearly very bright and, more importantly, are able to communicate very effectively and with a sense of humor.

This book can definitely be read on a stand-alone basis outside of a school environment. Many of the central ideas are very valuable.

Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse. Has all the details to help you start or clean-up an operation and help it run like a well oiled machine.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must...........2006-10-30

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

5 out of 5 stars Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative.......2007-01-03

An interesting concept presented in an innovative novel. Easy to read and follow. Just like a novel once you start, it is a page turner and hard to put down.

I highly recommend this along with Goldratt's first novel, The Goal.

3 out of 5 stars If you like learning from novels.......2006-10-24

A "made-for-TV" novel with a lesson about a new method of project scheduling. Goldratt invented the "Theory of Constraints," a general problem analyis and planning method which he then applies to various areas. Each application presented in story format.

"Critical Chain" = "Critical Path" x "Theory of Constraints".

Read this book if you want an easy read and a fun introduction to the subject. But if you actually want to apply the Critical Chain method, you'll probably need a textbook format. Or make the effort to abstract the method from the dialogue of the story.

4 out of 5 stars 5 star concepts in a 3 star novel.......2006-10-04

Eli Goldratt is one of the most respected experts in the field of Project Management. His work on the Theory of Constraints provides project managers with some very useful tools for keeping projects focused, on budget, and on target. I have definitely benefitted from Goldratt's insights into these topics.

Unfortunately, this work of fiction, with three largely separate story lines, makes for an awkward read. The 246 page novel has about half of its page count spent on two stories that add little to the main message of the book. The ongoing storylines about fixing the business school's executive MBA program and the main character's relationship with his wife Judith have nothing to do with project management. Fortunately, these two superfluous stories are at the end or beginning of each chapter and it is easy to skip over them and get to the useful subject material in the main story line, the running of projects and their problems. Skipping over about 100 pages of the book makes me question the value of paying for a book that could have easily been less than half as long. I might be OK with that if the stories were interesting or well written, but they are not.

Using the book as a reference would be challenging. It has no Table of Contents, no Index, nor a Glossary. The Chapters do not even have titles, or a summary of the key concepts at the end in most cases. I would struggle to find an important concept if I went back to the book more than a week or so after reading it.

A much slimmer, edited version of this book, with just the TOC and project management material, laid out end to end would be an instant must have, and a valuable learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every potential project manager.......2006-08-11

I've been introduced to CCPM (critical chain project management) years ago in school, but thought it was boring. Reading Goldratt's novel opened my mind to it in a much deeper way, and I'm now using it at my work with great success. I also recommend his other business novels.

5 out of 5 stars if you manage projects for a living..........2006-06-27

Face it, everything that happens in a business is either a process or a project. Even companies that manage projects for a living (e.g. construction, software development) often are lousy at managing internal projects (working ON the business). If you have anything to do with projects, you need to read this book. It will change how you look at projects forever. This guy is brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional.......2006-05-19

Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.

4 out of 5 stars RFID (RF Coupling in the Near field).......2005-04-07

RFID is a well written book. It covers hardware, regulations,
and RFID applications.
What I like about RFID is that it explains rF devices
in the near -field. Almost every other book I have read is about RF far-field.
The knowledge is useful in understanding the sources of noise in lab equipment caused by high frequency induction fields.
(These signals go right through the usual metal enclosures.)
Its useful.

4 out of 5 stars Good collection of concepts.......2004-04-16

This book has a very good collection of most of the concepts related to RFID and is very useful especially for beginners in RFID. I gave only 4 stars as I was dissappointed not to see any examples for any or almost all the concepts explained. For what it costs, I think it makes sense to add some examples liked to some important concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the concepts and applications.......2003-06-04

If you are an Engineer looking to understand the history, technical aspects, implementation, standards and details of RFID systems, this book provides an excellent introduction for you.

The chapters are well laid out and paced. The author explains the most common devices and systems available in the market, their technology and concepts quite well. Most of the RFID related standards have been covered along with relevant examples. The author covers such things as the hardware design specifications for devices, software requirements, and some basic RF concepts that are required to understand Transponder and Receiver designs.

If you need specifics about recent products however, you might want to research for other sources of information because this book does not cover vendors and products in detail. For readers without technical background, the book introduces the concepts well; but some content might not be relevant because of the [technical] nature.

    Book Description

Inventory Control and Management C. D. J. Waters University of Calgary, Canada Holding stock is expensive—problems of inventory control almost universal. Based on sound theoretical principles this book describes the methods of inventory control which have developed over many years and proved most useful in practice. Covering both the traditional independent demand systems, quantitative models and forecast demand, and the more recent dependent demand systems, MRP and JIT, Inventory Control and Management presents a clear and practical guide to the subject. Although some quantitative ideas are developed in the text the author has kept mathematics to a minimum, allowing the reader to develop a thorough understanding of the principles involved. He uses practical examples to emphasise the value of stock control, as well as describing the context in which such decisions are made. Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject area, this book will provide students of management, operational research and production—as well as practitioners—with an indispensable guide to inventory control.

    Download Description

"This book is a clear, practical, and self-contained guide to inventory management. It describes recent thinking about stocks and the methods for their control, developing the subject from basic principles through to higher level materials and newer developments. It does not assume any previous knowledge of the subject, nor of any other specific field such as management, operations, mathematics, or accounting. The Second Edition has been completely rewritten to improve the clarity and flow of the text, and includes a host of new information, examples, and support materials. "

    Book Description

This text/reference addresses the unprecedented changes occurring in manufacturing that are being brought about by quality management philosophy — lower inventory, reduced lead-time, preventive maintenance, and increased emphasis on customer satisfaction. Combining theory and practice, it presents alternative systems (models) for managing materials (inventory) — their use, transformation, distribution, and sale — and their flow to, within, and from the organization. Covers forecasting and marketing analysis; independent demand systems (deterministic models/probabilistic models); discrete demand systems (deterministic models/materials requirements planning - MRP); inventory system changes and limitations; single order quantities; in-process inventory, just-in-time, and theory of constraints; distribution inventory systems; inventory valuation and measurement; simulation; and aggregate inventory control. Content progresses from simple systems to more complex models; numerous examples of solved problems and short case studies explore a variety of situations and organizational settings; and appendices provide additional extensions and supporting logic on particular topics. For practitioners and advanced students involved in operations, inventory control, production control, and physical supply in manufacturing.

I would describe this as a technical book on the science behind inventory management. Much of the book is dedicated to detailing formulas and models used to determine order quantities, lot sizing, demand forecasting, safety stock calculations. Real examples make understanding these complex formulas easier. The book also describes the logic behind MRP and discusses Just-In-Time and Theory of Constraints. I would not recommend this as an introductory book to inventory management but rather a book for those that already have some basic understanding of inventory management and want to take their knowledge to a higher level. I expect to be referring back to this book for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A book points the right subject at the right place.......1999-02-18

As a MRP consultant, This book helped me a lot to prepare user training materials. By placing marketing suject at the beginning, this book points where real-world success on implementing Inventory and Material Manage is coming from. Also has good examples and cases.

    Book Description

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is rapidly changing the way businesses track inventory and assets. From Wal-Mart and Tesco to the U.S. Department of Defense, early efforts are already showing benefits, but software, integration, and data processing for RFID still present a challenge. If you are a developer or an architect charged with developing an RFID system, this book is for you. Drawing on extensive experience, Bill Glover and Himanshu Bhatt provide you with essential information on this emerging technology.

With the knowledge you gain in these pages, you will possess the information and understanding you need to start designing, building, or integrating with RFID systems.

In RFID Essentials you will find information on:

Bill Glover has been writing software since 1981 and has worked as a programmer, lead developer, or architect on systems of all sizes, from small, automated systems controlling dams and feedmills up to a complete redesign and reimplementation of one of the world's busiest travel web sites. Bill first worked with RFID in 1995, tracking individual cattle using ear tags. He is currently a Senior Java Architect with Sun Microsystems, Inc., and works with Sun's RFID consulting practice and the RFID Test Center.

Himanshu Bhatt heads the U.S. RFID Practice and Software Technology Lab for Sun Microsystems, Inc. Prior to assuming this role, Himanshu was responsible for business development and consulting in emerging areas of technology. Himanshu has over 16 years of experience in the architecture and development of distributed, multitier systems using a host of technologies for Fortune 1000 companies. Himanshu has spoken at industry conferences such as JavaOne and the LoneStar Symposium and has published articles on Java/J2EE technologies.

"The Information Age is over. We're entering an era where network connectivity is almost ubiquitous - it's participate or perish." --Jonathan Schwartz, President and COO, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

"Unique competitive advantage erupts from enterprises that couple the RFID technologies laid out in RFID Essentials with modern business integration using service-oriented architectures. This is the book to read in order to understand this new landscape." --Mark Bauhaus, Senior Vice President, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

"This is a must read for RFID Software and Solution architects and is highly recommended for anyone needing to gain more insight into the myriad of components, standards and technologies that make up an RFID solutions environment." --Bryan Tracey, Chief Architect, GlobeRanger Corporation

"The authors have done a commendable job of covering a lot of ground in the RFID space, including the infrastructure needed to share the volumes of data RFID will likely generate." --Graham Gillen, Senior Product Manager, VeriSign

5 out of 5 stars One of the Two Top Books on RFID.......2007-04-23

I found this book one of the top two books in the field of RFID; the othe rone being RFID+ by Dr. Paul Sanghera. This book offers a comprehensive coverage of the RFID topics. But if you are a beginner, you should read Dr. Sanghera's book befroe reading this one.
    Excellent book; highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview.......2006-11-21

I've read several RFID books and this one is excellent. Good overview, plenty of detail, well organized and well written (i.e. readable).

5 out of 5 stars Review of "RFID Essentials" purchase.......2006-11-12

The book was in excellent condition, and the service was prompt!

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-09-15

Are you a developer or systems architect or project manager? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Bill Glover and Himanshu Bhatt, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how to get that first RFID prototype out the door.

Glover and Bhatt, begin by defining RFID and introduce some of the fundamental concepts. Then, the authors describe the parts of an RFID system, their relationships to each other, and some of the functional and service-level requirements specific to RFID.
Next, the authors describe the tags that attach an identity to an item and communicate that identity to readers. The authors then examine how tags talk to readers. They continue by describing the readers that communicate with tags and connect RFID-tagged items to the network. Then, the authors cover how readers talk to middleware and applications. They then describe the middleware that manages RFID information and edge devices. Next, they examine the storage and use of RFID information. Then, they discuss some of the specific concerns related to managing RFID devices on the edge of the network. Next, the authors discuss real concerns regarding the impact of RFID on security and privacy, as well as dispelling some of the myths. Finally, they continue by providing a look at where RFID may take you in the next few years.

This most excellent book allows you to understand the major elements in an RFID system. More importantly, it shows you how to divide work, set goals, and understand vendor proposals.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-04-30

This is a good book on RFID. Lots of useful stuff in there. However, do not use it as yuor first RFID book. The material is quite advance at places.

1 out of 5 stars Marketing hype for RFID, nothing more.......2006-08-16

This book was a HUGE dissapointment for me. I have plenty of "For Dummies" series books and this is the only one that really let me down.

The whole book is written by a person who works for the RFID industry. He does not spend any time explaining the security and privacy issues involved with RFID. He makes a childish remark that "RFID is like credit card, it can be tracked"...BUT FORGETS TO MENTION that RFID can be tracked wireless every time everywhere, while your credit card can only be tracker where YOU CHOOSE TO USE IT.

Concidering the recent issues of RFID read/copy/forgery with even latest "high security passports" (like the ones used in EU), this book is really a HUGE thumbsdown. Dont buy it.

5 out of 5 stars RFID for Dummies.......2006-03-23

Excellent book for first timers in gaining knowledge about RFID technology and it's many uses within the supply chain. Easy reading with excellent examples of the what the RFID technology can or can not do for a buisness.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-08

Very good book for beginners, not only from a technical point of view, but also for somebody who is looking for knowing how to adress an RFID project and how to make a Business Case.

5 out of 5 stars RFID For Dummies.......2005-06-19

I have been researching and helping companies work with radio frequency identification (RFID) for more than 2 years now. After reading this text, I still found a great deal of very practical and informative information regarding the deployment of RFID technology. Aside from the technical and business merit that this book holds, Patrick Sweeney's sense of humor and ability to make parallels between this technology and other aspects of our every day life, made the book a joy to read. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the deployment of RFID in supply chain applications or merely has an interest in this emerging technology.

3 out of 5 stars Another Goldratt Novel... Good but not Great.......2007-03-16

Goldratt takes us through he paces again, but this time not quite as ground breaking and informative as the Goal. Of course the Goal remains standard reading for all young managers in any sort of manufacturing environment, and the TOC is a baseline concept that they should wrap their mind around. This book is good and adds a little refinement on top of the previous books, but should definitely be down in the pile. Start with the Goal, and keep this book on the low priority / rainy day list.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and practical.......2006-10-24

Another Goldratt teaching novel that teaches his thinking processes in story format. Fun reading. Inspires trying to solve work process problems that are hard because the current reality has contradictions in it. Setting is far from most workplaces, but then so are spy novels. Read the story for fun, and then read Scheinkopf's Thinking for a Change: Putting the TOC Thinking Processes to Use to learn the methods.

    5 out of 5 stars It's not luck.......2006-09-01

Great book! My first intention was not to buy this book. It was suggested to me. It ended up being very good. I'm glad that Amazon suggested it to me.
    Thank you

    2 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness.......2005-10-04

The Goal has some usefull stuff, the TOC and DBR. The Thinking Process is useless!

    4 out of 5 stars It's not The Goal..........2005-09-30

    ... but it's alright!

You must have read The Goal before embrassing this one. Although useful for a better understanding of the whole Goldratt's TOC especially in marketing and distribution, this novelesque management book suffers a little from proseltism. The reverence for Jonah's figure, even when solving personal problems, it's a bit abusive...
