Book Description

This book is a guide to implementation of World-Class Business Continuity Management within an enterprise. It may be used as a step-by-step guide by those new to Business Continuity Management or dipped into by the more seasoned professional for ideas and updates on specific topics.

There is no absolute "right way" to perform business continuity management - although there are plenty of wrong ways. Business Continuity is not rocket science: it is applied common sense. Yes, experience helps, but it is no mystic art. This book makes the processes transparent and provide the reader with everything necessary to do the job.

Many examples are provided throughout this guide: these all have their roots in real cases and real organizations, and come heavily laden with pragmatism. Over fifteen years of business continuity experience in environments large and small, public and private, has gone into developing the methods described. Your own "right way" for business continuity management means picking, matching and tailoring from the cases and examples provided and combining these with existing best practice within your organization.

Business Continuity: Best Practices
by Andrew Hiles

The Business Continuity: Best Practices book addresses all the professional areas of competencies recommended by the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII) and the Business Continuity Institute (BCI). The DRII and BCI are the largest professional groups establishing industry standards and membership educational requirements on a worldwide basis in the continuity and disaster recovery field.

Business Continuity: Best Practices is designed for use by professionals as well as by interested non-professionals. In fact the book directs the user at a `Practitioner Level' and at a `Foundation Level'. Most business continuity concepts are more practical than technical and the conscientious nonprofessional can utilize this book. The book makes very liberal use of Appendices in every section, thus allowing the serious user to selectively examine specific topics in detail. The casual reader can skip any technical Appendix without losing important concepts.

For the serious reader / plan developer there are numerous tables and checklists that are useful in gathering information and developing the actual Business Continuity Plan. The checklists and tables are very detailed allowing the user to develop a comprehensive plan that does not miss any major points. The book is easy to read and even a non-professional can develop a good plan, especially if a good planning template or actual Business Continuity Plan from a similar business is available as a guide.

In addition to developing a Business Continuity Plan document, Business Continuity: Best Practices addresses ongoing communication, plan implementation, plan activation and all the important aspects of plan development and execution. There is also an excellent section on emergency response and plan operations that provides important guidance during an actual emergency situation. Most importantly, Business Continuity: Best Practices addresses ongoing maintenance and exercise issues so the plan can be properly maintained.

Business Continuity: Best Practices deserves a solid 5-star rating.

The information in the book are basic, not deeply developed. Maybe it is good for beginners, not for experienced personnel.

4 out of 5 stars Authoritative and Comprehensive.......2004-11-20

This book certainly helped me to find my way through the complex world of BC. It is easy to follow, with a roadmap to guide you through and summaries after each chapter. It covers the DRII / BCI Common Body of Knowledge step by step, with many examples from real life cases, checklists, forms - everything I needed to get through a first assignment. And it will become provide a useful benchmark for us as we become more mature and widen the scope of our BC and risk managementactivities.

Book Description

"An in-depth step-by-step guide to help you develop, test, and maintain your business continuity plan."

The business continuity planning process consists of six key stages:

1. Risk management 2. Business impact analysis 3. Business continuity strategy development 4. Business continuity plan development 5. Business continuity plan testing 6. Business continuity plan maintenance

Although there are many publications that explain business continuity planning, very few provide detailed methods on how to implement it; even fewer cover implementation of all six stages.

Business Continuity Planning Methodology is a single, comprehensive, text that explains the principles of business continuity planning and presents an easy to follow step-by-step methodology to implement its six stages. The methodology considers protection of mission critical business processes, resources, and services. It focuses on key resources such as IT systems and infrastructure, manufacturing and production equipment and products, facilities, work areas, vital records, and critical data. The methodology is consistent with business continuity industry standards, guidelines, and best practices such as ISO/IEC 17799, NFPA 1600, COBIT, and DRI International.

This book gives readers the skills to manage risks, conduct a business impact analysis, develop a business continuity strategy, and develop, test, and maintain a business continuity plan. The main body of the book contains chapters structured according to the six business continuity planning stages:

Risk Management This chapter introduces the key concepts of risk management and describes a framework for managing risks to business continuity. The framework includes steps for risk assessment, risk control options analysis, risk control implementation, risk control decision, and risk reporting. The chapter explains the concepts and implementation of these steps through examples of business continuity risk.

Business Impact Analysis This chapter describes the steps for conducting a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and explains the implementation of these steps through an example BIA scenario. The BIA steps include assessment of financial and operational impacts, identification of mission critical business functions and processes, identification of critical IT systems and applications, and determination of recovery requirements. Topics in this chapter include comparison of BIA and risk management; BIA benefits and responsibilities; methods of conducting a BIA; disaster-to-recovery time line and events; elements of the BIA such as Maximum Tolerable Downtime (MTD), Recovery Time Objective (RTO), Recovery Point Objective (RPO), Work Backlog, and Data Loss; summarized findings; and BIA report content.

Business Continuity Strategy Development The business continuity strategy development framework presented in this chapter is designed to help the reader determine the best strategy that will enable a timely and cost-effective recovery from a potential business disruption. It describes the steps to identify recovery requirements and options, conduct a cost-benefit assessment, and identity and select the most viable recovery options. This chapter also discusses general considerations for developing a business continuity strategy, and provides recommendations for recovery contracts and service level agreements.

Business Continuity Plan Development This chapter is a guide for developing an effective business continuity plan based on the results of the preceding stages. It explains the detailed structure and content for an effective plan and covers the key plan execution phases: initial response and notification, problem assessment and escalation, disaster declaration, plan implementation logistics, recovery and resumption, and restoration. Numerous examples of plan activities, procedures, and tasks help to explain the content required in the plan. This chapter also addresses the requirements for an emergency response plan and crisis communication plan.

Business Continuity Plan Testing This chapter introduces the key concepts of business continuity plan testing and provides a framework for developing an effective test plan. The topics include test objectives, test benefits, test methods, test scenarios, test evaluation criteria, and test budget. The framework then explains the sequence of test plan development steps and addresses various issues and concerns that influence the test plan, such as test constraints, strategy, logistics, and risks.

Business Continuity Plan Maintenance The focus of this chapter is on maintaining the business continuity plan in a constant ready-state. It describes activities needed to ensure that the business continuity plan always remains accurate, current, and complete. Topics covered in this chapter include business continuity plan change management, plan testing, training, and audit.

This book also contains the following appendices: a summary of deliverables resulting from the six stages of the business continuity planning process; summary of business continuity standard guidelines and best practices; business continuity resource information; and a glossary of business continuity terminology.

This comprehensive text is an excellent resource for those who develop business continuity plans, manage business continuity projects, or want to learn about the subject of BCP. It is a valuable reference for people seeking certifications such as CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) or CBCP (Certified Business Continuity Professional).

If you're looking for a quick, easy, and fun guide to constantly cultivating from within your organization the talent to move up and fill positions left behind by others, don't look here. Written by a human resources expert who teaches at Penn State, Effective Succession Planning must surely be one of the driest books ever written on this topic, from its aggressively unsexy title and jacket to its college-textbook format and arsenal of supplementary checklists, flowcharts, and exercises.

Having said that, it's also probably one of the most thorough books on the topic (and a fine complement to The Leadership Pipeline), incorporating methodical and meticulous guidelines to preparing for and quickly filling crucial vacancies at all levels of the organization, from top management to sales, administrative, technical, and production positions. Not only does it lay out a plan for instituting a long-term succession planning program that includes everything from early action steps to ongoing evaluation and revision, it also shows how to develop, monitor, and evaluate talent and skills in individual employees in order to promote effectively from within (although it acknowledges that sometimes the best choices come from outside, and offers key steps for optimizing the outside-search process as well).

Everything is covered here, from the legal implications of hiring and firing and online and high-tech resources to major trends that will affect succession planning in the years ahead. And, thank god, the author has incorporated some case studies--both fictional/composite and those of several large real-life companies--to add some names and faces to a volume that's about as dry as the Sahara, and (for human-resource professionals, at least) potentially as welcome as a fresh supply of water if you happened to be stuck in such a place. --Timothy Murphy

Rothwell's book is one of the more comprehensive and well researched books covering this growing topic. It includes a wealth of information following all of the major steps of the Succession Planning process. The book contains useful worksheets and task process flows that allow a reader to rapidly introduce the core concepts into their organisation. A great resource.

easy to understand and absorb great intro reference

5 out of 5 stars Like a lot of other things---it's only as good as you apply it.......2007-05-12

The need for succession planning is reaching crisis proportions, yet few organizations are willing to face the crisis and do something about it.

There's nothing magic here---just a realistic, comprehensvie, flexible approach to get the job done. The strenghts in this book:
- Finding the right devleopmental activity for the right level of management
- Design, gain support, and implement, and maintain your succession process.
- Lots of extras, including assessments and a plan to devleop a mentoring program.

A great value.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2005-08-29

Rothwell provides not only an excellent review of the current literature but countless worksheets for practice. If you are interested in succession planning issues this book is a must. I would also recommend "The Leadership Pipeline" by Charan, Drotter, & Noel. And buy a copy of "Strategic Organizational Learning" by Beitler. Beitler has several free articles on his website "[...]" that are also helpful.

Ward illustrates this practical guide with extensive case examples from a wide of small to midsize businesses, including food service, printing, and chemical companies. He also offers sample board prospectuses, company mission statements, effective meeting agendas, and other essential tools for bringing the board together and encouraging its active participation in the business.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Effective, step-by-step map of the process........1999-01-20

As a professional planning consultant, I've recommended this book many times to my clients. It is the best, most thorough and step-by-step map of the process of putting a board together that is available to my knowledge. Anyone with a closely held company who is considering putting an outside board together (and most should), this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive guide to creating boards........1998-08-24

This is an extremely practical, thorough, study about how private companies can use boards to enhance their governance systems. The fact that a family owned compay does not have the legal obligation to have a board obscures the fact that boards are extremely useful management instruments. Prof. Ward shows the way to using this instrument efectively.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful guide.......2007-06-08

As IT manager, I'm always looking for books that could help me to improve services... but this book help me to avoid or minimize the bad effects of problems qhen they take place.

The goal of the book is not to improve your process or your skills.. is to improve your protection, backup or restore systems and processes.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-10-29

I recommend you to buy book from this seller because i did not have any problem buying from him.

5 out of 5 stars Great Handbook. Extremely helpful for developing a DR plan........2006-01-12

I found the book extremely valuable in getting a disaster recovery plan developed. The book was very helpful in not only showing step-by-step HOW to put together our plan, but also did a great job in explaining WHY something should be in the plan. It also focused on the entire business, not just on technology as some other books on the subject do.

1 out of 5 stars Not a HandBook.......2005-11-15

Don't get carried away by the title descriptions "Hand book" and "step-by-step plan". If anyone is buying this book with an intention of developing a BCP/DR plan, implementing and testing it they will be disappointed. This book only helps to get an overview of BC/DR planning. I couldn't find anything readily usable in the companion CD. It contains a bunch of documents with one page and one table in it. You wouldn't find anything important and useful such as sample BC/DR plan, emergency response procedure and flow diagram.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and very insightfull.......2005-01-03

This book reminds me what effects an extended outage can have. I was able to find at least one item in every chapter of this book that I could easily and cheaply implement, that not only saved me money, but allowed me to better ensure my business will continue to function in the event of serious unplanned outage.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A second set of eyes.......2005-02-26

The outside review of disaster plans is an often-overlooked function. This "second set of eyes" is crucial to the planner. This book gives an excellent set of procedures for the reviewer to follow. It is excellent for not only the Auditor to read, but also for the planner - to understand what the auditor will be looking for.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Auditing Tool.......2003-01-03

One of the best ways to ensure that your business continuity program is addressing your business needs is to conduct an audit. This book provides excellent insights and guidance on the issues associated with auditing business continuity. It helps you through the audit process so you can ensure that your plans are properly organized. Why wait until you are formally audited?

5 out of 5 stars Author's Statement.......2002-11-19

The book addresses BCM from an auditor's point of view. However, it is quite useful for any BCM practitioner as a "self-test" or "self-assessment" tool: if you are planning, implementing or testing a BCM, if you've been assigned a BCM-related position within the firm, or if you are a BCM consultant, you will find useful hints for practical use.
I have structured the book in two major parts. The first part gives detailed descriptions on how to conduct a BCM audit (or self assessment), with details about the different types of audit you may be tasked to do - compliance, feasibility study, due diligence, forensic etc. The second part contains a full-scale audit program incorporating the ten BCI work areas. If you go through this program step-by-step, you'll automatically cover the full spectrum of the BCI business continuity "universe".
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions - happy to share opinions about audit methodology, planning, execution and reporting, as well as any other specificially BCM-related points.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Overview of Business Continuity Management.......2004-05-14

Reading the material presented is a breeze. Unfortunately, it is unfair for me to pass judgement on the subject matter, as I am still a novice. Common concepts and definitions are presented on Section 1 while Section 2 expounds on the implementation aspects. Being a newbie I was somewhat impressed that the tasks involved even include mitigating human factors such as psychological effects, as well as a taskforce to handle the media with its coverage of any disaster that might be detrimental to the image of the company. An interesting concept presented was "Multilateral Business Continuity", as it raised questions on whether your business partner's (major customer, supplier, logistics) failure could even spell doom for your business.

BCM is presented as an all-encompassing "way of life", ensuring that a business can survive a disaster and bounce back to its pre-disaster profit level, and the tasks and information that is required to ensure proper diagnosis, prescription and maintenance of a business. As one of the authors put it - "Do we gamble with failure or hedge against it".

Although presented as a collection of 20 articles it is seamlessly organized that the information did not appear redundant. After which Case studies are presented on major disasters that happened to corporations in America, most notably 9/11. Considering the scope of BCP/BCM (Business Continuity Planning) endeavour, the market for its implementation within Malaysia is limited to listed companies that can afford the methodology preached. Plus, Asian cultures abhor having outsiders prodding through every nook and cranny of their business process and resource points, isolating weaknesses and identifying exposure and making sure that the business is resilient enough to withstand a collapse of its major infrastructure. Not only that, to ensure success, key personnel from all sectors have to be identified and interactions and accountability documented with redundancies and multiple information and escalation routes introduced to ensure resiliency. At the end of the day, one would envy the consulting firm that manages such a wealth of information from any such companies, which one would assume will be sizeable enough to want BCP/BCM. What a treat indeed!

On the downside, as expected with books that compiles articles, the depth of the information presented is quite shallow, but fortunately for a person like myself that are new to the subject, it's quite a readable experience as that is exactly what I am looking for. It provides enough pieces to the puzzle for me to proceed with my r&d activities.

4 out of 5 stars Practical BCM at last!.......2000-01-25

This is a thoroughly welcome addition to the business continuity books on the market. It brings a clear, rational approach to a very complicated topic. Unsurprisingly, the book adheres to the ten stage process as defined by the Business Continuity Institute and the Disaster Recovery Institute and is written in a style that is easy to read and with very little jargon. (It even gives guidelines on how to read the book.)

The book outlines some important lessons:

- The Importance of business continuity management

- Business continuity plans should be based on outcome scenarios and not causes

- The need for an organized development/implementation

- BCM is never complete - amendments and testing will always be required

There are a couple of points to note though:

- It fails to deliver the message clearly that Business Continuity Management is an umbrella for business impact analysis, risk management and business continuity planning. Too many people just concentrate on the latter.

- My experience shows that many advantages are gained through the development of the plan when the business continuity is firmly in the minds of those involved and the management sponsors (who have allocated resources and funds). This is as important as the plan itself.

- Unlike chapter 15 (Developing the written plan), Chapter 18 (Selecting tools to support the process) is an example of where the book sits on a fence. It describes the types of tools required but gives no clear examples of data used. There are numerous examples that could have been used to illustrate this; perhaps this leaves the door open for consultancy opportunities!

- Another downside to the book occurs as early as section one, which is described as an executive overview and is 75 pages long!

Notwithstanding these minor grumbles, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone involved in BCM or anyone thinking about creating a more secure business.

Cost-efficient business contingency and continuity planning for a post-9/11 and Katrina world

Disasters can happen. Contingency plans are necessary. But how detailed and expensive do your contingency and continuity plans really need to be?

Employing a thoroughly practical approach, Business Continuity Strategies: Protecting Against Unplanned Disasters, Third Edition provides a proven methodology for implementing a realistic and cost-efficient business contingency program. Kenneth Myers--an internationally recognized contingency planning specialist--shows corporate leaders how to prepare a logical "what if" plan that would enable an organization to retain market share, service customers, and maintain cash flow if a disaster occurs.

Completely updated throughout to reflect lessons learned from 9/11 and hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, Business Continuity Strategies, Third Edition helps cost-conscious senior management:
    * Establish a corporate contingency program policy and strategy that ensures timely completion of a plan, with minimal disruption to operations
    * Minimize plan development costs
    * Understand the importance of conducting briefings to communicate the proper mindset before the program development process begins
    * Save time and money by avoiding a consultant's traditional approach of extensive information-gathering that contributes little to the development of practical solutions, but much in the way of consultant fees

Addressing countless hypothetical disaster scenarios doesn't make good business sense. Business Continuity Strategies, Third Edition helps companies focus on what is necessary to survive a natural catastrophe, workplace violence, or a terrorist attack.

5 out of 5 stars from the author.......2006-05-30

The circumstances that lead Julia and I to write this book are interesting and help to explain what it is, and why it is quite different from other books. The Institute of Risk Management, who are the International Institute for vocational risk management education, asked me to be their lead examiner on business continuity. The first task was to set out to find a textbook that takes the organisation wide and holistic risk view on business resilience. I needed to find one that had the vision to see that business continuity as something that includes, but is now so very much more than, the fast replacement of technology and workstations.

I do believe that this is so important, not least because the science of business continuity must keep pace with change amongst our own `stakeholders', i.e. the organisations that employ us and also their own stakeholders. If we do not evolve and take our rightful place in the strategic thinking of the organisation, we will increasingly be sidelined from the crucial and the real resilience debates; and others will be asked to manage stakeholder expectations.

The modern day organisational structure has so many more single points of risk that potentially offer complete destruction than the business models of the 1990s. The supply and the delivery chains are outsourced, the intellectual assets are much more critical and diverse and are, even in themselves, outsourced. The workforce is managed by third parties, and the double-barrelled risks of brand and speed are the real dependencies at the heart of the modern-day organisational promise. It is no coincidence that the board, the risk manager, investor, regulator, auditor, as well as the business continuity manager, increasingly sees resilience an ever more important concern amongst their worry beads.

In spite of asking many friends and fellow professionals to search out a book for me that captures that wide-business resilience , and thus bring together as a team the various managers concerned with risk, we failed to find even one.

The upshot was that Julia and I set out to write one. This was not only to provide the Institute with their needed textbook but because we feel strongly that the business continuity industry does need to move on into the 21st century. We hope that the book will encourage that process and encourage co-operation between erstwhile silos of risk management that, in isolation can be so dangerous to today's organisations.

We have written the book therefore with a view, not only to aid students to develop their understanding, but also as a good read for everybody who has a responsibility to ensure that their function, public service or profit making, can continue to deliver on its promises.

    Book Description

The interest in Business Continuity has gained significant momentum in the last few years, especially with the Y2K non-event, the increasing corporate dependence on computer systems and the growing levels of devastation associated with recent disasters. This book takes an organization interested in continuity planning through the processes needed to develop an effective plan.

"Jim Barnes has succeeded in providing us a much-needed tool, with which we can condidently face many of the day-to-day challenges of business contingency planning ... 1 out of 5 stars Worse Book Ever.......2005-06-12

To begin with this book has the worse index ever. The book is lacking helpful information and filled with information that holds no value. The book is nothing more than a feeble attempt at providing a BCP template, of which you can find better and simpler on the Internet for free.

5 out of 5 stars Business Continuity Planning by James C. Barnes.......2002-08-12

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a training class by James Barnes and was provided a copy of Mr. Barnes's book as a reference and support tool. Since my attendance in his class, I've had an opportunity to read the book. I was very pleased to see that the tools provided in the book and in the class are a virtual roadmap with weighpoints along the way to help determine direction. I've been a Safety Engineer for over 30 years and have worked with critical path processes and procedures that were far less accurate and meaningful. While disaster planning has always been an integral part of Risk Management, the continuity aspect of the planning process was not well integrated. What we used to call disaster planning considered rebuilding a facility, it's interdependencies with other facilities, and business interruption. This book provides a outline and method for recovering each facility as an entity, from the facility's management critical necessity and contiunuity business point of view.
I highly recommend this book to "Top Management" and engineers who want to prepare their companies for any disaster.
Remember, it's not enough to have a disaster plan that gets you up and running. You need to have a plan that maintains the continuity for production, communications, and customer service, or business failure is imminent.
If your're fortunate enough to attend a seminar by this author, don't pass it up. If you can't attend a seminar, the book is worth every penny to business survival.

1 out of 5 stars Boiler Plate Consultant Material.......2002-07-11

Business continuity planning needs to be tailored to the organization and its needs. This book does not present a methodology which can be tailored as such. It, instead, provides boiler plate questionnaires and checklists which limit the user and the organization to the author's interpretation of what an organization needs. Basic stuff and not particularly useful.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Would Ever Want to Know About BCP.......2001-10-04

Highly recommended for people in the BCP field and those contemplating entry into the field.

This thin book provides the framework for a comprehensive business continuity plan. The author has taken the no-nonsense approach of using lists rather than blabbing a lot of text. As I read these lists, I said to myself "of course ... that's the way it should be done".

One little nitpicking: some of the lists are obvious. E.g., the author did not need to list five pages (!!!) of expendable supplies. A few ellipses on some of the longer, more obvious tables would have done the trick.

I used this book as a (secret) foundation for BCP work completed last spring. Now, with the phone ringing off the hook, it is more invaluable.

    5 out of 5 stars Real-life experience.......2001-08-02

I have personally used this book as the model for evaluating business continuity in a billion dollar annual revenue company. The book offers excellent models for conducting the necessary business impact analysis (BIA) and analyzing the results. The book provides guidance for the entire process from consultant engagement to management strategic direction setting.

During the BIA process for my company, I worked with the book's author during a consultant engagement. I found the author to "practice what he preaches". The book's guidance comes from real-life experiences and results in practical and quality results. My company received a most rewarding product from the impact analysis, which provided the appropriate guidance to develop a comprehensive business continuity program.

The book is highly recommended if a company wants to be prepared to survive an extraordinary disaster event.
