Soy economista, por mi profesion suelo leer bastante libros y diarios, especificamente de economia y en ingles, tambien poseo varios diccionarios financieros pero los mismos son muy incompletos.
Lo considero el mejor, por que casi no hay un termino economico que no lo contenga. Con anterioridad a la compra, he tenido que recurrir a otros y muchas veces los terminos buscados no estaban.
Sin lugar dudas, mas alla de lo economico de su precio, por su contenido es el mejor.

5 out of 5 stars Vastly superior to anything else out there!.......2006-05-10

For my work as business translator I have bought every bilingual English-Spanish business dictionary published for almost 25 years now. Previous purchases included Wiley's English-Spanish, Spanish-English Business Dictionary by the same author, and The Oxford Spanish Business Dictionary. Even though the Oxford dictionary claims to have over 50,000 entries, and the Wiley dictionary 40,000, the Wiley dictionary was in reality much larger.

These were the dictionaries I used the most. The rest I had practically never looked at. For several years these two dictionaries helped me get my job done, but as each year went by more and more terms I needed were not there. Terms such as those in electronic commerce and business theory, to name a couple.

Happily, a few months ago Webster's New World English-Spanish/Spanish-English Business Dictionary was published, and now I have access to over 80,000 entries and over 100,000 translations! Its 2006 publication date insures that it is completely current, and amazon lets you see sample content right on this page. If you go to the Wiley website you can see the entire letter a in the English to Spanish section. I suggest going there and seeing for yourself how much you can find there, and then coming back here to buy it, as it is about $13 cheaper here.

It is clear that this will be the only English-Spanish business dictionary I will need for years to come! Check out the sample content and see for yourself if you agree!

    4 out of 5 stars Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide Review.......2006-03-03

I am coming from a VBA background learning about this new software. This book is a great resource tool for making such a transition. Mr. McAmis stepped me through the learning process in a clear and concise manner. The information was learned in progressive manner, in that, the further through the book I read, the more complex issues were handled. At the end each chapter the author challenged me with key questions to help me remember the most important issues.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Wanted or Expected.......2004-05-27

I'm afraid I have to agree with the review from "A reader from Cupertino, CA" - I, too, am on Chapter 4 and am frustrated beyond belief because my reports look very little like the examples in the book so far. In the case of the second tutorial in chapter 4, again the other reviewer is correct - it's not even the same report!

I bought "A Beginner's Guide to JavaScript" by the same company and was thrilled with it. It was clear, concise and had a "mini-project" at the end of each chapter for the reader to complete to ensure mastery of the concept being taught. I was expecting the same thing with this book, and am sorely disappointed. The explaination of each topic is general at best, incorrect at worst, the tutorials are simplistic and don't include half the information being covered in each chapter, if indeed a tutorial exists at all.

I need to get up to speed on Crystal Reports in a fairly short period of time, and be able to generate some fairly sophisticated reports. This book is becoming a hindrance to that goal.

    2 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2004-01-16

It is a beginners book as the title says, but there is a pittfal, the author should consider for future books.
Not every chapter has a step-by-step tutrial. The user have to download the samples and use them to be able to follow the author, which defeats the purpose of learning by doing.
Chapters 4 & 5 make are mutually exlusive, since chp 5 requires reports from chp 4, that was not a step-by-step tutorial.
Either make it a step-by-step or don't. Just be consistent.

1 out of 5 stars This book [is bad].......2003-08-21

This book needs some serious editing
Right now I'm on Chapter 4 and so far this book is terrible in regards to the Projects. The project instructions don't correspond with the results intended and shown. For example, the instructions say open the Customer by Country report, but then it says 'your report should look like this' and shows you an entirely different report! And sometimes the report you worked on doesn't even work for the task you're trying to learn. The author must have had his friends write the other customer reviews. Don't buy this book! It's just unfortunate though that there aren't many choices.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage and Design.......2003-06-27

Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide covers everything and more that I wanted to learn about Crystal Reports. The information is easy to digest and there are regular 1-Minute checks along the way. Hands-on experience, in the form of Projects, are dispersed through each chapter (the completed projects can be downloaded from the web). Answers to the Mastery Checks, at the end of every chapter, are given in the Appendix.

My only complaint about the book is that, I feel, there is not enough hands-on experience because the projects are too simple. There are plenty of projects, but most of them are simply a number of steps and very little critical thinking. After reading Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide, my knowledge of Crystal Reports has vastly increased though I still have little experience with actually creating reports.

5 out of 5 stars Put your dinero where your boca is..........2003-10-07

The reader from Atlanta really trashes this dictionary and takes care to provide some examples of the flaws discovered. I was surprised, because it was recommended to me by an official translator in Madrid and I was considering purchasing it. Given that the Atlanta reader doesn't like the Rutledge dictionary, I'd really appreciate his/her recommendation of a better dictionary to serve as reference for business translations, especially in the investment field. Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Many, many errors.......1999-11-23

There are literally dozens of errors in this dictionary. "Banner year" is translated literally as "año insignia," which is nonsense in Spanish. "Mover and shaker" is also translated literally ("promotor e impulsor"). It's as though the author didn't understand English! Other absurdities are "herein" (aquí dentro--should be "en el presente"), hereunder (más abajo--should be "conforme al presente"), etc. Again, these are literal translations that do not fit in business or legal writing. "Judicial notice" which is actually "reconocimiento de hechos notorios" is translated as citación judicial--again, complete lack of understanding of the term. I'd stay away from this one like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spanish Commercial Dictionary.......1999-09-02

As a translator who specializes in financial and commerical texts, I can honestly say that the Routledge is the most complete dictionary I have found on the subject. There is nothing that compares to it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Real Estate 'dictionary'.......2007-03-11

Recommended by a highly respected RE instructor for my broker class as being the best book of its kind - well worth the puchase - easy to read; will be a much used desktop reference for all aspects of real estate transactions.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for anyone involved in real estate.......2007-01-11

This book was required when I took that first real estate course you need to get your license. (I chose not to get my license since I'm just an investor. Not exactly relevant, but it tells you the kind of person I am and my perspetive as a reviewer.) I'm thankful because it made that course much easier. I've since taken many courses and read many real estate contracts and this book has helped me through everything.

It's like a dictionary except the explanations vary in length from a couple lines all the way up to several pages. As others have mentioned, I really value the many relevant cross-references each entry includes. It allows you to get a fuller picture of something you look up because it allows you to look up similar items or related topics. It's fine to know the definition of something, but sometimes, what's really useful is to compare it to something similar so that you have a context for how to distinguish between the two. As a simple example, if someone was offering something as tenants-in-common and you looked it up, you might think, "okay that makes sense," but unless you compare it with tenants-in-partnership or joint-tenants, you really don't know what you're dealing with.

Some people are complaining because the book has Spanish translations. I assumed it was some new edition that had added these. Nope. I just checked and mine has it too. It doesn't detract from the book at all. I hadn't even noticed it. And the Spanish-English appendicies are only 15 pages out of 468 total. What's the problem? That's probably a useful tool if you're from Texas or Calfornia, like the author.

Anyway, this is the second most often used reference book I own. (Second only to The Synonym Finder by Rodale, an awesome alternative to a thesaurus.)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Real Estate Reference Book.......2006-08-08

As a community college real estate instructor, and as the book review editor for a national real estate magazine, I read a lot of real estate books. As a writer myself, I do a lot of research. In the reference category, this book is number one on my list. As I said in my review of a previous edition of the book: "I never leave home for the classroom without it." If you are enrolled in a real estate licensing class this book will be particularly valuable to you, since you're essentially learning a new language - the language of real estate. The feature that makes it particularly valuable is the fact that when it defines a term, it gives references to all related terms in the book. By the time you review them all, you'll have excellent insight into the topic. The primary author, John Reilly, has a background as an attorney, real estate professional, educator, and author. The co-author, Marie Spokek, is a nationally know real estate educator. In my office I have a special shelf above my computer for the real estate books to which I refer the most often. This book occupies a prominent spot. Dr. Ken Edwards, Book Review Editor, The Real Estate Professional magazine.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-03-18

This book was great. I just passed my real estate exam and the book was a great reference for those subjects that were not clear in the classroom. I will be able to use this book throughout my real estate career. Well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!! .......2005-09-30

I have seen mixed reveiws on the Spanish translation in this book. It does not bother me that it is in there. I practice real estate in Arizona...it is nice if I have a client with broken English. I will take anything that has a freebie in it. The translations in here are not bothersome at all. It has examples of terms and has some illustrations...along with sample contracts! I am so glad I have this...a great buy!

    Book Description

This caustically funny Webster’s of the workplace cuts to the true meaning of the inane argot spouted in cubicles and conference rooms across the land.

At a price even an intern can afford and in a handy paperback format that won’t weigh down your messenger bag or briefcase, The Dictionary of Corporate Bullshit is a hilarious guide to the smoke-screen terms and passive-aggressive phrases we traffic in every day. Each entry begins with a straight definition followed by a series of alternative meanings that are, of course, what is really meant.

Take, for example, the widely used, seemingly innocuous term brainstorming:

    1. to generate ideas as a group in an accepting environment and in a free-form manner
    2. a supposedly relaxed forum in which no idea is a bad idea – that is, until you generate a bad idea and are met with uncomfortable silence/looks that suggest you are retarded or really uncool/the feeling that you are about to be fired

Beyond deciphering corporate commonplaces, you’ll learn the PC term for secret Santa (Holiday Harry); why the Blackberry is “most commonly referred to as a ‘Crackberry’ due to its highly addictive nature”; and that when a co-worker says “Have a good night”, they really mean: “this meaningless, seemingly interminable exchange of small talk is now over. I am no longer speaking to you, and will now flee this awkward social situation. Don’t even think of asking which way I’m walking.”

Just remember to read this only at COB (close of business) to avoid being busted (caught idling by your boss).

    5 out of 5 stars It's Funny Because It's True.......2007-07-09

If you work in an office, you'll both laugh and cry when reading this book. It could be filed under "humor" if only it weren't such an accurate representation of corporate BS terminology. This is an important anthropological work!

    3 out of 5 stars 1 part informative, 1 part bs.......2007-01-09

This book contains a lot of funny, simple truths. I got it to get a 'professional' opinion on my office romance and found some pretty funny definitions concerning that, but in the end the best place for this book is in the bathroom :)

5 out of 5 stars A Must for every office!.......2006-05-03

I am thoroughly enjoying these hilarious, yet so true, definitions. It is must for anyone who is planning to work, is working, or is retired wants to reflect on all the BS they had to put up . An excellent gift.. I am sending copies to my two sons who are both involved in the corporate world . enjoy, enjoy

    5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2006-04-05

This book is hilarious. Each entry gets funnier and funnier. It's not simply amusing because you recognize all of the office politics and indignities that lois describes. It's brilliant because she describes the office and corporate b.s. better than you can. In the spirit of 9 to 5, I envision Dolly, Jane and Lilly sitting around, getting high, and reading a copy of the Dictionary of Corporate BS, as they plot the downfall of Mr. Hart.

    1 out of 5 stars Corporate Bullshit.......2006-03-21

As the name implies, it was "just plain stupid." Better luck next time Lois!

A practical guide to the inside language of the world of derivative instruments and risk management

Financial engineering is where technology and quantitative analysis meet on Wall Street to solve risk problems and find investment opportunities. It evolved out of options pricing, and, at this time, is primarily focused on derivatives since they are the most difficult instruments to price and are also the riskiest. Not only is financial engineering a relatively new field, but by its nature, it continues to grow and develop. This unique dictionary explains and clarifies for financial professionals the important terms, concepts, and sometimes arcane language of this increasingly influential world of high finance and potentially high profits.

John F. Marshall (New York, NY) is a Managing Partner of Marshall, Tucker & Associates, a New York-based financial engineering and consulting firm. Former Executive Director of then International Association of Financial Engineers, Marshall is the author of several books, including Understanding Swaps.
