Book Description
The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.
Customer Reviews:
Overpriced .......2007-09-18
There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.
Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27
In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.
Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17
The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.
FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10
I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!
Not to bad.......2005-09-13
The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.

Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2007-06-16
Probably the most common reason to purchase this book is to gain information about becoming an independent medical transcriptionist, but I really was disappointed with this book as far as that is concerned. Technology and medicine both advance and change on a daily basis which leaves this book, printed in 2002, in somewhat of a dark age, especially now that the most cost effective, time efficient, and popular way of transferring all sorts of data is electronically.
While there is some good information in this book, I don't think the amount of information that is relevant is worth the price. Most of this stuff can be found on the internet more accurately than in the pages of this book.
Quite Dated.......2005-11-27
Despite being revised in 2002, much of the information in this book is still quite dated. For example, it still assumes WordPerfect is the standard for word processing software, and it talks about upgrading your computer to a 486!! Not sure what they did in that 2002 revision... Given how behind the times the book is, it is of limited usefulness. However, there are some good sections and it is a reasonable general overview of setting up your own independent transcription service.
For all People in Medical Transcription........2003-09-02
I read this bokk, this to to let all you people related to Medical Transcription that this book is great. Has useful material for Medical Transcriptionists. Book gose into details on setting up and becoming a good Medical Transcriptionist. This book is being kept in our library and we will ask all our Trsnscriptionist to read it and but it, as it has useful tips. ...
It's informative but...........2002-11-03
This book can be informative at times but most of the time, I felt like I was reading the book version of the home shopping channel. If you're already a transcriptionist, you don't need this book. And if you're a newbie, The Medical Transcription Career Handbook has more and better eye-openers to help you get started.

Customer Reviews:
Difficult book to use.......2005-12-01
This book and its predecessor are difficult to use. While the information may be good, this book requires a lot of flipping back and forth between pages. The CDs are really, really bad. The persons posing as doctors are poor readers. It's obvious they're reading scripts from the sound of turning pages heard. These persons affect poor accents...one female tried to sound Scottish and kept saying "fart" for "for". One male, who reads as if, at best, he has an 8th grade education with a 5th grade reading level (he doesn't understand commas and periods), is really bad to listen to when he tries to sound Hispanic. Loud crunching sounds and cocaine sniffs by one male and the above-mentioned female sound like delinquent hogs at slop. The very worst thing about the CD and text, however, is in the fact that terminology is not only not found in the text, it isn't found in Taber's, Mosby's, or Stedman's dictionaries, nor in the Merck Manual. I wouldn't recommend purchase unless, like me, you are required to purchase these for a class. I know doctors can be extremely aggravating, but no more so than the "doctors" on the CD and this text!
Excellent book .......2004-11-29
The 2004 Delmar Thomson catalog states that an audio CD is in the back of this book. In order to get this audio CD of dictations, call Delmar at 1-800-998-7498, extension 2687
Page 115 of this catalog says that an audio CD of helpful exercises is in the back of the book.
Excellent as long as you get the tapes!.......2001-09-22
Great book for advanced training. Get the tapes for sure!
Forrest General Medical Center:Medical Term.& Transcription.......2000-04-26
This is a reference book only. You have to call the publisher to order the dictation. Without the dictation a medical transcription 'course' is rather useless.

Very basic........2005-09-15
This book is just plain old common sense, there is no real information given. Very basic.
Great step to start your own company.......2005-02-13
As founder and developer of a unique medical transcription company, EchoScribe Inc, this book is a great way to explore career options in MT. In fact, many of our clients, people who started their own company though the careers section of our company website, recomend this book because of its completeness. Excellent book for med trans students (coming from one!).......2000-05-27
I am so glad that I bought this book! It is very helpful and insightful. I am currently in a two-year Associate of Science in Medical Transcription degree program, and while I am very happy with my training at the college, I felt clueless as to: how to start looking for a job, what I should look for in a position, what to expect in salary for my first job, how to do my resume with no on-the-job medical transcription experience, etc. This book covers it all! It has good information on all of the above mentioned topics AND stories from working medical transcriptionists and how they got their first jobs. It also has websites relevant to medical transcription and many more tips including a chapter on "tricks of the trade." This is an excellent book if you need ideas on how to start after you graduate. I highly recommend it for any medical transcription student!

Book Description
Tobacco in History and Culture explores how tobacco became one of the most important commodities in the history of world trade and the source of one of the biggest public health concerns in modern history. Originally used by Native Americans for medicinal, religious and social purposes, tobacco quickly became the biggest export from the American colonies. By the mid-1990s, more than 14 billion pounds of tobacco leaf were grown worldwide each year, with international treaties governing its advertising and distribution. It has affected agriculture, religion, social customs, business and trade, government policy and medicine in many countries. The unique and innovative reference work presents entries on all aspects of tobacco and from a global perspective, providing support for assignments at many levels and in a variety of fields, including history, economics, government and health.
Tobacco in History and Culture is the first set in a new reference line, the Scribner Turning Points Library. Future titles will explore other discoveries and historical events that have changed the direction of human societies worldwide, whether through sudden upheavals or gradual evolution.
Customer Reviews:
Nice to have.......2007-08-23
This book is nice to have, but goes out of date almost before you can get it shipped. It's what it is, and I like to have it around the house.
The PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs.......2007-02-19
A ready reference for the family home, highly recommended.
Good but not enough.......2006-10-04
With big letter, easy to understand language (most of the time), sounds a good alternative than to buy the original PDR for medics (cheaper too). But lacks a lot of new medicines that had been inroduce to the market by the aggressive style of the pharmaceuticals. You can find basic and most common prescriptions drugs but today (2006), there are a lot more and probably, the next one your doctor recommends you.
Excellent reference, but ..........2005-09-29
This book is basically the same as The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs, except in a different format. The physical dimensions of this book is larger, not as many pages, and the print is somewhat larger. Information on drugs is taken from the same source (Physicans Desk Reference). There are some brief chapters in the back of this book on common medical problems. This edition was published in 2002 (so it was based on the 2001 PDR). I would suggest the PDR Pocket Guide because it is more recent and there is a new edition of the Guide due out soon. Nonetheless this is an excellent reference book to have in your home. For some people the format and size of the book and additional chapters may make this a good choice. It is just a little dated.
The PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs.......2005-09-14
I found this publication to be exactly what I wanted as a reference book for prescription drugs. It has complete information about the drugs as well as color pictures of each.
