Book Description
Bestselling author Salih Neftci presents a fresh, original, informative, and up-to-date introduction to financial engineering. The book offers clear links between intuition and underlying mathematics and an outstanding mixture of market insights and mathematical materials. Also included are end-of-chapter exercises and case studies.
In a market characterized by the existence of large pools of liquid funds willing to go anywhere, anytime in search of a few points of advantage, there are new risks. Lacking experience with these new risks, firms, governmental entities, and other investors have been surprised by unexpected and often disastrous financial losses. Managers and analysts seeking to employ these new instruments and strategies to make pricing, hedging, trading, and portfolio management decisions require a mature understanding of theoretical finance and sophisticated mathematical and computer modeling skills.
Important and useful because it analyzes financial assets and derivatives from the financial engineering perspective, this book offers a different approach than the existing finance literature in financial asset and derivative analysis. Seeking not to introduce financial instruments but instead to describe the methods of synthetically creating assets in static and in dynamic environments and to show how to use them, his book complements all currently available textbooks. It emphasizes developing methods that can be used in order to solve risk management, taxation, regulation, and above all, pricing problems.
This perspective forms the basis of practical risk management. It will be useful for anyone learning about practical elements of financial engineering.
* Exercises and case studies at end of each chapter and on-line Solutions Manual provided
* Explains issues involved in day-to-day life of traders, using language other than mathematics
* Careful and concise analysis of the LIBOR market model and of volatility engineering problems

great book.......2007-05-07
Prof. Neftci gave one of our mandatory course - Financial Engineering, in HEC Lausanne. This book is the reference book for this course. His lecture is great, a lot of jokes and funny stories as well as insights about financial engineering. However, I find out that the book is even better than his lecture.
Simply a must own for anyone with any use for Quant Finance.......2006-08-26
Neftci is one of those rare authors who can begin at the begining, explain his major point and logic without excessive jargon or short-cuts, and do so without sacrificing depth and substance.
In a field were the readable texts are for MBAs or elementary practioneers or for the initiated members of the priesthood, here is one of a few handful of authors (Wilmott and Joshi as well) that are both clear and serious, rigorous and accessible, insightful and a plerasure to read.
I can't praise this book too highly!.......2005-12-09
As someone who teaches derivatives to practitioners and in a Masters program, I can't praise this book too highly. It is clear, comprehensive and, most importantly, concentrates on practical applications. I was particularly pleased with the chapter on repo, which is usually underestimated in importance, without requiring a whole, specialist book.
For someone with a fundamental, but non-quantitative background in financial markets (MBA or CFA level), this is the ideal place to go next before more specialised and quantitative books. The advantage of having studied this book first will be to have a clear picture of the forest for the trees.
My only (small) criticism is that the book would have been even better if it had included a chapter (or two) on the multi-tranche asset backed security structure followed by cash and then synthetic CDOs. I do hope that might be rectified in the next edition.
Bravo!
This is one of the top books on quantitative finance.......2005-11-22
I am a student of Prof Neftci in the Applied Math for Finance MS program at Baruch College. He is a great teacher and has written this wonderful book. This is the text book for the Calibration course he teaches at baruch.
The best thing about it is in the practical approach it is written with. It tries to explain the finance as interpreted by practioners like traders...the engineering of finance rather than the science of it. Knowledge of basic parobability thoery, martingales, PDE and some stochastic calculus is assumed. The book itself has less emphasis on mathematical rigour but there are plenty of other references for that.
The strength of this book is in its practical utility in understanding the market and the rational behind the products that exist in it and the priciples of pricing and hedging those.
Chapter 11 on the Fundamental Asset prcing theory is a gem and is the workhorse for pricing many of the products like swaps or swaptions.
Great!.......2005-11-20
A wonderful book with a great didactic approach! Very clear but never mundane. The best introduction to the field so far. It's only drawback is the sometimes slightly unintuitive notation.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Recently, a great deal of progress has been made in the modeling and understanding of processes with nonlinear dynamics, even when only time series data are available. Modern reconstruction theory deals with creating nonlinear dynamical models from data and is at the heart of this improved understanding. Most of the work has been done by dynamicists, but for the subject to reach maturity, statisticians and signal processing engineers need to provide input both to the theory and to the practice. The book brings together different approaches to nonlinear time series analysis in order to begin a synthesis that will lead to better theory and practice in all the related areas. This book describes the state of the art in nonlinear dynamical reconstruction theory. The chapters are based upon a workshop held at the Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge University, UK, in late 1998. The book's chapters present theory and methods topics by leading researchers in applied and theoretical nonlinear dynamics, statistics, probability, and systems theory. Features and topics: * disentangling uncertainty and error: the predictability of nonlinear systems * achieving good nonlinear models * delay reconstructions: dynamics vs. statistics * introduction to Monte Carlo Methods for Bayesian Data Analysis * latest results in extracting dynamical behavior via Markov Models * data compression, dynamics and stationarity Professionals, researchers, and advanced graduates in nonlinear dynamics, probability, optimization, and systems theory will find the book a useful resource and guide to current developments in the subject.
Book Description
This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well.
The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities.
Customer Reviews:
Good accessible book on water wave mechanics.......2006-04-05
The objectives of this book are to introduce the reader to the fundamental understanding of water wave theory and to apply the basic physical principles to the coastal and ocean environments. The prerequisites for understanding this book are knowledge of fluid mechanics, basic calculus, and differential equations. Thus it is presumed that the student is an engineer, and probably an ocean engineer. This book is really quite accessible. I am an electrical engineer and I have been using it to help perform animations and visual effects regarding water and its properties. Its clear examples have been quite valuable in turning seemingly complex equations into actual physical phenomena that can be measured. I consider it a steal at its low price considering its content. Also, it is good as a textbook since it contains plenty of homework problems at the end of each chapter.
The table of contents are:
Introduction to Wave Mechanics
A Review of Hydrodynamics and Vector Analysis (Eulerian and Lagrangian view, Navier-Stokes Equation)
Small-Amplitude Water Wave Theory Formulation and Solution
Engineering Wave Properties
Long Waves
Wavemaker Theory
Wave Statistics and Spectra
Wave Forces
Waves Over Real Seabeds
Nonlinear Properties Derivable from Small-Amplitude Waves
Nonlinear Waves
A Series of Experiments for a Laboratory Course Component in Water Waves
Book Description
The Project Management Office (PMO) is a rapidly emerging concept in project management that has evolved in terms of its application, sophistication, and proven results. Most literature on the subject focuses on a specific facet or purpose of PMO. The Advanced Project Management Office: A Comprehensive Look at Function and Implementation provides an all-inclusive description of the PMO and allows project management professionals to select the features most appropriate and relevant to the issues at hand, while keeping the full PMO picture in perspective. The authors illustrate how the PMO can be used to reduce costs of projects, decrease time to market for new products, increase corporate profits, and ensure project success. This reference covers all aspects of PMO in a format that is easy to read and understand. It discusses the motivations for adopting a PMO, including project performance, project manager competency, the organizational desire to excel, and much more. Both short-term and long-term functions are identified and discussed. WBS-like structures are developed for use in the process of evaluating project performance during the life-cycle of the project. Ideal for senior project management professionals and as an advanced project management training program, the book presents two related models that deal with the evaluation of project performance from the vantage point of the client as well as the project team. With so many industries becoming project team driven, The Advanced Project Management Office will help project managers ensure project success and improve their company's bottom line.
Customer Reviews:
Disapointment.......2005-07-07
As a PMP and member of a new PMO attempting to establish the value and credibility of a PMO within our organization I found this book to be a bitter disapointment. This book was singularly lacking in practical advice as the to implementation of a PMO. Regarding the subject matter, there was nothing "Advanced" about this book at all.
Sadly overpriced and irrelevant.......2003-05-08
In spite of its claim to "illustrate how the PMO can be effective in reducing costs of projects, decreasing the time to market for new products, increasing corporate profits, and ensuring project success," this small, overpriced book actually does none of these things.
A collection of unrelated articles, all written in a dry, overly academic style, the book totally fails to address the proposition that a Project Management Office (PMO) adds value to an organization. There are many statements to the effect that "the PMO can ..." perform this or that function, but no assertions about the function itself, or whether it can just as easily be performed in organizations that do not have a formal PMO.
It is surprising that more than half of the eight chapters have no relationship to PMO functions at all. They discuss various project management issues, some of which are interesting, but all of which are better covered elsewhere in the literature. These topics are not what one expects when purchasing a book purportedly discussing the PMO function.
The book is completely devoid of real world examples, so we are left with the authors' assertions as to the efficacy of their ideas. There is also a paucity of real action items. The chapter on "Implementing the PMO" obsesses on where this group should report in the organization, and has no practical step-by-step advice on how to go about actually creating a PMO. This chapter does, however, contain an interesting, albeit irrelevant, discussion on managing "Projects with Virtual Teams."
As someone charged with actually creating a working PMO in a large organization, I was extremely disappointed with this book. It offers almost no practical information on this topic.
The need for a Project Management Office.......2002-08-31
This is an excellent, comprehensive treatment of what a project office, or project management office should be. Anyone considering forming a new PMO, or wanting an assessment of an existing PMO, should read this book. Use it as a calibration checklist.

About *project*, not *program* management offices.......2002-08-26
his book is about setting up a project management office, not a program management office. Although to many the distinction is either subtle or moot, there are key differences. A project management office is an organization that manages a single project and is usually disestablished after the project is complete. A program management office is an organization that is either established to manage a portfolio of projects or a major contract that has a complex statement of work requiring a number of simultaneous projects. A program management office can also be a permanent organizational function that provides continuous oversight of all projects from start to finish.
The forgoing distinctions do not diminish the value of this book, but merely set the expectations of potential readers. In fact, this book contains a wealth of excellent advice about establishing and managing a project office. It also goes deep into details regarding required skills, roles and responsibilities. I especially liked the discussions on project performance management and maturity models.
Another point in this book's favor for project managers who want to establish a project management office the right way is other books about "PMOs" are more focused on program management, which is too broad in scope.
I like the way the author approaches the topic, which is structured and clearly described, and the way the book covers all of the major issues, factors and details.
It is about the essence of PMO.......2002-08-06
The authors did an outstanding work in presenting this book in simple terms and easy-to-read style. They used Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) analogy to explain concepts of Project Management Office and make it easy to comprehend the complex subject. It is a book that covers Project Management Office (PMO) concepts in great detail. The book is a useful reference to establish and improve the perfomance of PMOs.

Book Description
As urban areas keep growing, water infrastructure ages, and the requirements on environmental protection become more rigorous, there is a continual need for upgrading water pollution control facilities and restoring degraded urban waters. Such issues are addressed in this book by focusing on five major topics: (a) Upgrading stormwater management facilities, (b) Retrofitting / upgrading combined sewer overflow (CSO) facilities, (c) Optimising/upgrading sewage treatment plant performance, (d) Urban stream restoration, and (e) Challenges in restoring urban environment. Each chapter contains some overview papers followed by research or case study papers. Besides presentations of new approaches and accomplishments in the field of upgrading and restoration, several papers provide analysis of vast needs in this field in several countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which either recently joined the European Union (EU) or are preparing for accession, and need to comply with the existing EU directives dealing with environmental protection. As such, this book will be of primary interest to researchers and university lecturers dealing with environmental upgrading and restoration, environmental planners from all levels of government, municipal engineers and politicians, and finally the private industry representatives (consultants, private utilities and environmental technology suppliers) searching for new business opportunities among the new or aspiring members of EU.

Genetic Algorithms and Genetic Programming in Computational Finance
ASIN: 3540440984 |
Book Description
Due to the ability to handle specific characteristics of economics and finance forecasting problems like e.g. non-linear relationships, behavioral changes, or knowledge-based domain segmentation, we have recently witnessed a phenomenal growth of the application of computational intelligence methodologies in this field.
In this volume, Chen and Wang collected not just works on traditional computational intelligence approaches like fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, but also examples for more recent technologies like e.g. rough sets, support vector machines, wavelets, or ant algorithms. After an introductory chapter with a structural description of all the methodologies, the subsequent parts describe novel applications of these to typical economics and finance problems like business forecasting, currency crisis discrimination, foreign exchange markets, or stock markets behavior.
Customer Reviews:
handy reference for design.......2007-10-06
As some of the other reviewers have already noted, this isn't the book you'd use to start up your own machine shop. Of course it's title says "fundamentals", and I believe it does a good job explaining them. I'm a design engineer in the aerospace field and it seems like there are young, fresh out of college engineers everywhere I've worked that can make a pretty part in the computer that a machinist would find almost impossible or at least very costly to make. I've loaned the book out on multiple occasions and find it is very helpful.
Great buy for the beginning machinist........2006-05-17
I was given this book by the author, my high school teacher in 1969. This is an excellent text for the machinist, and home shop machinist. The first addition was written many years ago, and geared to the manual machinist. Even the cnc machinist needs the basics contained here. Mr Walker did a fine job writing this book, and preparing me for a lifetime of work as a professional, and home shop machinist. I recomend it for anyone striving to learn the trade as a profession, or a hobby.

Read and Enjoy.......2002-02-20
This book is very good and when you ask yourself what is missing to make it complete encyclopaedia for the field, you see that you only need more tables and data for specific appilication.
But.
Concept of technical encyclopaedia that gives you all available data related to some field NEVER has invaluable features that this book offers: clear and patient explanations, extremely well illustrated, allways beginning "from the bottom" (very basics) to a very reasonable level of sophistication. If you start form zero level knoledge or if you need pragmatical reference book that covers whole field, choose this book. All you further need to master machining is: some good desk reference book i.e. collection of practical table data (there are couple of them very useful at really modest price), manual of a particular machine that you have and practice, practice.
That combination is, in my opinion, of muche more value then some hard-stuff encyclopaedia.
Solid practical information.......2002-01-20
"Machining Fundamentals" by John R. Walker is a quality production. What I mean by that is this hardcover book is printed on good paper stock, the text is very descriptive and it is filled with an appropriate number of illustrations and photographs. In addition, the coverage of various topics is scaled to provide information consistent with what a typical reader of a "Fundamentals" book needs. Yeah, I know, what does that mean? Only that lathe, milling, drilling, and grinding operations, including relatively elaborate setups, are covered extensively, while manufacturing automation received a well written single chapter.
What is the value of all of this information ? I purchased the book in anticipation of buying a bench lathe. I found myself reading the book in front of the TV, nodding in acknowledgement, and verbally expressing in ways I'm sure were irritating to my wife, "Oh, so that's how they do that. Duh! Of course that makes sense. Gees, you're kidding me. Why didn't I do that?" And when I was done, I realized how far off the mark I had been in assessing what I would need to upgrade my shop area; better now than after those trucks dropped 20 tons of less than useful equipment in my driveway.
"Machining Fundamentals" won't replace equipment shop manuals, or classroom training and shop experience, but it is a good reference book. As an example, it does a good job of explaining the differences amongst 3 and 4 jaw chucks, Jacobs chucks and collets. The book even explains when they apply, why they apply and how to clean, maintain, inspect and install/remove them. Still, 9 very good pages on lathe cutting tapers, from setting up to measuring and checking, 10 pages on thread cutting, and even a few on cutting threads on tapered surfaces, will not qualify you to knock off a related project. But there is enough there to illustrate how the job is done, which may steer the reader to further detailed research, armed with enough conceptual information to attempt the job, and maybe practice the same type of work for a non-critical purpose while developing hands on experience. I liked the book.

Excellent Introductory Textbook for Novices.......2001-07-31
The previous reviewer probably never read the book very closely. There is no cover page picture for the chapter on the computer numberical control. The chapter starts by describing the differences between manual and computer controlled machining -- hence the picture of a machinist on this page operating a manual machine.
