Book has a no nonsense, easy to apply approach that every current and future insurance agent should read!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-02-06

This is a must read for anyone starting out in the insurance business. In spite of its brevity, I found it to contain very specific, insightful, actionable information. It was useful to me immediately and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars CSR is the key.......2006-06-24

I wish the author would of talked a little more about the "system" of an agency and not just "hire a CSR" as the key. He was very postivie in his words but not as informative to commission splits and hiring new "sales people" for the agency.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2006-03-13

Very easy to follow - excellent information! Is used as a training book for some agencies.

5 out of 5 stars Simplicity.......2006-03-09

AWESOME BOOK. It is the best insurance related book I ever read with simple approach on how to become the one and best choice for insurance. With a open mind and good attitude, this book can become your insurance and financial services bible.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Makes me feel smarter!.......2003-12-01

I am desk jockey who does electrical design work. I have little in-the-field electrical experience. I use the NEC codes frequently to make sure what I design is code-compliant. I have a copy of the standard 1999 NEC book and found many parts of it difficult to interpret. This new "handbook" version has answered all of the questions and uncertainties I had about the code. It has an illustration and explanation for just about every question I could think of. Even when I don't need a certain thing, I have found myself leafing through the book just to learn more.

I would recommend this to anyone, but especially engineer types or those who are inexperienced. I feel much more confident about my job and I don't have to ask electricans those questions that make you feel stupid anymore. Even master electricians will appreciate the explanations of code changes from the 1999 version. Overall, I can't recommend this book more, well worth the $50 or so more than the standard NEC book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2003-01-29

If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. This book just nails everything you ever wondered about, everything you haven't yet wondered about, and a few thousand things that you'll never need to know. Want to install a subpanel? Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it? Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box? How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2006-12-10

This book is worth its weight in gold. I originally picked it up while doing research on life insurance options. But after reading the first chapter on auto insurance, we called our agent, raised our libability limits and deductibles, got rid of unnecessary coverage and ended up saving ourselves $250 a year! The author, who has worked in the insurance industry for years, makes things plain and simple and illustrates his points with easy-to-understand charts. Now I feel like we actually have a clue about what we're buying, and I feel much more secure knowing we'll likely be well covered in the event of a catastrophe. This should be on every homeowner's bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable..........2006-11-26

I know I'm getting older when I start reading and writing reviews about insurance books.

I'm not a big fan of the "dummies" books for a few reasons: (1) First my ego...I have to admit I don't want a book on my shelf that is a dummy guide for anything, and (2) I don't want to buy another reference book that is going to sit on my shelf and collect dust.

I purchased this book b/c I had big questions about car insurance, life insurance, and umbrella policies. No concerns about house insurance, which seemed to be the biggest complaint about the book.

Quite frankly, it answered all of my questions. Before reading this book, I didn't even know the difference between collision, liability, and comprehensive insurance; and I had no clue how much insurance I should carry for that "break glass in case of emergency" type accident. And like all of the dummy books, the text is informative while remaining engaging , and actually entertaining-even though the subject is insurance.

I actually feel empowered after reading this book. It led me to purchase an inexpensive umbrella policy (if you don' t have one, you need it) that will certainly make me sleep better at night.

This is one of those books that after you read/reference it, you'll wonder how you ever operated in the past without the knowledge it contains.

Don't put too much trust in earthly treasures, but you should certainly protect what you do have!

Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Not as Good as I Expected.......2006-11-08

My house was a total loss after a fire. I needed info on home insurance so I got this book. BIG disappointment. No help at all.
I then got another book on Amazon titled "Mold, Fire, Flood & Other Topics: Homeowners Insurance Explained." Great book--I recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-22

I thought this book would give objective advice on how much insurance someone should buy. It told me a few things I didn't know but I wouldn't have paid the price for the book for two or three pages of useful advice.

1 out of 5 stars Lacks Depth in Homeowners Insurance Discussion.......2005-04-05

I was looking for a book that discussed IN DETAIL homeowners insurance, and I didn't find it in thisone.

Claims, how to appeal a denied claim, mold, how to avoid being under-insured and/or cancelled--these subjects are ignored, even though they're important to me and most people I know.

This book is a WASTE OF MONEY if what you're looking for is in-depth info on homeowners insurance.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars insurance handbook for the medical office.......2006-01-26

I was very disappointed in the 9th revision. Although the HIPAA compliance and e-commerce sections have been updated, the material in the workbook is exactly the same. That includes all the same editing errors from the last edition. I spend hours of my time "re-writing" these editions when they should be correct at publication. The same ICD-9 and CPT errors are still there. I am seriously thinking of changing books for my school.

5 out of 5 stars handbook of Home Health Standards and Documentation .......2007-08-03

This book was recieved quickly. I founds the book to be very informative and useful. I found the answers to several of my questions I had. I will keep the book close to use for a reference and I am sure I will use it a lot. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL.......2007-04-02

I love this book because, being in the home health industry you have to know what you're charting. If charting is lacking then you will not get the full reimbursement that you are entitled to. Thanks alot.

5 out of 5 stars Quickly settles disputes, answers questions, a "MUST" for all home care nurses & their management teams !!!!.......2006-04-03

I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients. Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms. Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing. The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care. Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines. There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well. All home care codes are listed.

With the often-confusing regulations and data gathering tools out there, at least we on the front lines have this portable manual to help us sort out our assessments and evaluations into the accurate coding and leveling criteria that supports what we do, what we observe, and allows for the appropriate revenue to support the levels of care our patients require. As OASIS data-gathering evolves, newer editions will be needed to keep up with the miriad of changes that will ensue, but at least here is a standard we can all make good use of, and I am willing to bet every nurse, from novice to manager, will find something in this manual that was not known or delineated as well to them in the past.

This manual would also make a wonderful teaching tool for nursing students. They may as well learn early on how intricate the data-gathering tools are in the real working world. Accurate notations on the OASIS forms can either make or break a case, not only regarding reimbursement, but as to whether the levels of care, and variety of disciplines, that you feel are needed, are allowed to provide services to your patient. Hasty and inaccurate translation of evaluations and assessments onto the OASIS forms results in inability to justify to Medicare that the levels of intervention you are requesting are appropriate.

3 out of 5 stars A must-have for the FRM exam.......2006-11-03

Jorion's book is indispensable (and, in my experience, sufficient) when preparing for the FRM exam; if you are taking it, think no more. An added bonus is the impressive number of typos and errors to test your knowledge :)

5 out of 5 stars very satisfied.......2006-07-30

good to have a wide range of subjects in one handbook. it seems I don't need the other library for my everyday work

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for what it claims.......2006-05-05

The people who have written reviews primarily have gripes that they didn't pass. They must have thought the book was THE ONLY RESOURCE they would need. I used this book and I did pass the exam. It wasn't the only resource I used though.

The publishers of the book even claim that using only this book will not help you pass the exam. It is an OVERVIEW text. It is a primer to help you delve into the material. This book will not substitute the large amount of qualitative reading and equation memorization that you'll need to do in order to pass.

I give it a 4 mainly because the book does what it claims and because some of the more negative reviews are too far-fetched. Remember to buy the version that applies to your test year.

1 out of 5 stars I Wish I Hadn't.......2006-03-30

This book cost me the FRM last year. I made it the center of my study program. The book's writing is atrocious; there are gaps in what is covered; and there are many errors and misstatements. I wasted six weeks struggling with this book. When I finally realized my mistake, it was too late to rescue my study program, and I failed the exam. I am very disillusioned with Jorion and GARP. This shoddy, overpriced paperback makes me think they are in it just for the money. This year, I have signed up for the CFA exam instead. So far, I have been very impressed with their study materials.

Book Description

Never before have there been so many laws designed to keep corporations honest. New laws and regulations force companies to develop stronger ethics policies and the shareholders themselves are holding publicly traded companies accountable for their practices. Consumers are also concerned over the privacy of their personal information and current and emerging legislation is reflecting this trend. Under these conditions, it can be difficult to know where to turn for reliable, applicable advice. The sixth edition of the Information Security Management Handbook addresses up-to-date issues in this increasingly important area. It balances contemporary articles with relevant articles from past editions to bring you a well grounded view of the subject. The contributions cover questions important to those tasked with securing information assets including the appropriate deployment of valuable resources as well as dealing with legal compliance, investigations, and ethics. Promoting the view that the management ethics and values of an organization leads directly to its information security program and the technical, physical, and administrative controls to be implemented, the book explores topics such as risk assessments; metrics; security governance, architecture, and design; emerging threats; standards; and business continuity and disaster recovery. The text also discusses physical security including access control and cryptography, and a plethora of technology issues such as application controls, network security, virus controls, and hacking. US federal and state legislators continue to make certain that information security is a board-level conversation and the Information Security Management Handbook, Sixth Edition continues to ensure that there you have a clear understanding of the rules and regulations and an effective method for their implementation.

5 out of 5 stars A multiple vision of IT Security.......2006-03-23

This book is an excellent example of compilation of dozens of good works on IT Security. The quality of articles and the different points of view whereupon are treated turn to it an essential work. It only has a failure: such amount of information has been packed in only a volume that has forced the publisher to reduce both the font and the thickness of the paper to the maximum. Very bad for that no longer we have twenty years and in addition we were used to mark the most interesting paragraphs with a pencil.

4 out of 5 stars Book content is excellent, but paper quality is worst ever.......2005-12-16

I am reading the fifth edition of this book. In the earlier editions the book was published in three or four volumes. The fifth edition is a combination of all volumes. So that is good.

The book is a dense read. But the content is excellent. There are 163 chapters in this book. Each chapter written by different authors - experts in respective areas. So the book provides a best of breed treatment to various assorted topics. However, not all chapters are good (but most are). I'd say about 20 or so are of filler kind of chapters. Nothing really special in them. But the book is worth for the rest of the matter.

The chapters are also written to provoke further thought into each area. Kind of "first principles" approach - which I like compared to the CISSP guide approach of "here is the information, now devour it for the exam". However this book is not an exam guide (and I knew that before hand). I bought this book for the matter in it and I am very satisfied.

If you are the kind of person who want to quickly assimilate and regurgitate the matter for CISSP, then dont even bother. I am kind of person who loves to read things from the basics slowly, getting the concepts and ideas all clear in my mind and hence I plan to finish this book before reading CISSP exam guide (which by the way is also sitting on my bookshelf).

However I have a major complaint againg the publishers. Having charged One hundred thirty dollars for a 2000 page book, I'd expect the quality of paper is decent. The paper is so thin, I invariably turn two pages when I am thiking it is one page. It is so thin, even turning the page carefully damages the paper. I agree that the content is specialized and most authors hold at least two or more certifications (CISSP, CISA, SSCP etc.), but that does not warrant printing the book on really wafer thin transparent paper. Sure, the publishers need to make money, but not by compromising the quality of the paper SO MUCH.

And you'd expect this kind of book to live on your shelf for a long long time than "Teach yourself crap in 24 hours" books, but the quality of paper will make that unlikely. Hence I am giving 4 stars to a book which otherwise would deserve 6 stars

5 out of 5 stars Volumes vs editions.......2005-04-19

Some of the reviewers are confusing 'volumes' with editions. Each edition of this book contains several volumes. Each volume contains new papers, adding them to the current edition of the ISMH.

The current edition of the Information Security Management Handbook is the 5th. At present, it has only 2 volumes. This CD-ROM only contains the 1st volume of the 5th edition. There is a new CD-ROM of the ISMH with a 2005 date (ISBN 0849339422) which I *think* contains the new volume 2 of the 5th edition (ISBN 0849332109)

What makes this CD-ROM valuable over the 5thED-V1 book is that it contains the contents of the 3rd and the 4th editions! I know the 4th edition contained four volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!.......2003-09-04

Excellent reference!

This is an excellent security reference!

If you are looking for a pure CISSP prep book, this is not the best. But for general info sec, this is an awesome book.

2 out of 5 stars A Poorly Edited High-Level Introduction to the Industry .......2007-09-18

"Medical Billing and Coding Demystified" provides a very high-level introduction to the namesake industry. I was disappointed that the first 80 pages of the book provide no information about billing nor coding, opting rather to provide a background of the entire healthcare industry that, as a whole, is only useful to the reader if he/she has never been to a doctor in the United States. Given that the book has fewer than 200 pages of informative text, I argue that the book is fundamentally mis-titled.

The book is also poorly edited, missing various commas and hyphens that would enhance readability, not to mention the authors' collective credibility. In one instance, the word "loose" is used where the word "lose" is the intention. These types of errors may seem trivial, but I prefer that my professional refrences be more polished than this one appears to be.

5 out of 5 stars A good starting point for revenue cycle management career.......2007-04-17

Medical office revenue cycle management in general and medical billing in particular can be excellent career choices for somebody interested in medical field and business administration but lacking formal medical education. This book helps making such a career choice decision by bringing up the complexities of medical billing and the challenges of getting the medical practice paid in time and in full. An overview of medical billing software is also an important addition to the book as no advanced billing operation today can exist without electronic claim processing. Other chapters in the book go beyond pure coding and billing functions, providing advice on finding a billing job and passing billing tests. By including end-of-chapter quizzes and a final exam, this book also makes sure you remember most of the important information acquired from reading it. A solid introductory text.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info amid a lot of fluff.......2007-04-11

Perahaps 30 pages of the book have anything to do with medical billing or coding. The rest of the book presents a summary of everything from telephone etiquette to the duties of the office manager. This is really more of a sloppily written introduction to running the front end of a medical practice than it is a serious introduction to medical billing and coding. As such the book is really only of value to someone thinking of pursuing a job in medical practice management and just wants to get an idea of what it's all about. It's of little value for anyone actually trying to figure out how medical billing and coding actually works.
