Customer Reviews:
Fair good knowledge base for mobile networks.......2005-10-02
A simple, easy yet complete overview of the most important mobile network architectures. Can be used at the university as teaching material or as studying text.
Excellent Resource.......2001-12-12
I found the book to be very informative and well laid out for use as a reference. It has been a life saver in giving a good background on each technology. I have been asked by several of my wireless networking peers about the book and all have found it an excellent reference.
An excellent wireless and mobile networks text book for CS.......2001-09-10
I used this book as the textbook for an undergraduate course in our computer enginnering department last semester. Unlike its alternatives, this book does not require a signal and systems background which makes it the ideal choice for departments such as ours. If you are teaching a group of CS or mixed EE/CS undergraduate students, I strongly recommend the book. In general, the book is easy to read and gives the reader a broad understanding of the topic. Chapters are organized in a manner that the book will be useful for the North American, European or Far Eastern community as examplified in the inclusion of different signalling systems from different regions. Another property of the book which makes it attractive is the inclusion of very hot topics such as VoIP,GPRS,WAP, 3G services, wireless local loop which makes the book timely and complete.
Full of unexplained terms and confusing descriptions.......2001-04-02
The typesetting makes this book unpleasant to read. However, it is the writing style that makes the reading a frustrating experience: The author throws you piles of technical terms without clearly explaining their meaning, or the relation to and difference from related acronyms. It might be a book for you only if you are already a telecom expert. Otherwise, you would probably find yourself in a similar situation to mine--hoping someone can help you with tons of questions you cannot find answers for from this book.
Excellent book for system aspects of wireless networks.......2001-03-27
It is the personal opinion of the current reviewer that in order to understand the inside and out of wireless networking, you have to know not only the physical layer but also the high layer networking aspects. Some books do cover both physical layer and high layer, however, most of them lack the deepth on either one aspects or both. The reviewer understands the difficult task for both coverages, in the process of developing his new course on wireless networks, he took the following approach: use the best part on physical layer in one book, and switch to another book on high layer. The current reviewer chose this book to cover the high layer wireless networking aspects, this book provides most fundamental elements of wireless networking.
The nice thing about this book is that it is written by two individuals who have been extensively involved in developing the wireless networking technologies. It starts with the most important issue in wireless mobile networks: the mobility management in the general setting, detailing what call processes are involved, how handoff strategies are designed, how channel assignments affect the performance, how the control signaling among the commuincations entities are accomplished (IS-41 and GSM MAP). Then the authors shift their focus on the specific wireless systems: PACS, CDPD, GSM, GPRS and other applications. In distinction to other books, this book attempts to present the main ideas, and is a very good book for those who really want to know what is going on in wireless networking area, yet do not have time to figure out (do not care about) the details. It is also very excellent reference book for those technical experts who want to broad their horizon. The current reviewer finds the book very useful in his research when he wants to clear some doubts on certain topics.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting topic but very shallow contents.......2007-10-04
This book first details the concept of Web 2.0, then how the mobile technology can be the part of Web 2.0 (Mobile Web 2.0), followed by the description of many components such as location technology and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). The authors also discusses the business aspects of Mobile Web 2.0.
This book contains a few interesting observations. Especially the cultural and business difference between the Internet world and the telecommunication industry (labeled as 'Open Gardens' and 'Walled Gardens' respectively) is worth noting. However, I can hardly recommend this book mainly due to its very shallow explanation of related topics. Almost all the references in the book are from web pages, and it contains very very few literal references. I don't think siting web pages itself is a bad idea, but it is embarrassing to see the authors siting and even quoting from Wikipedia without giving a timestamp. This implies that the authors have never done thorough research on the technical topics.
Another problem I see in this book is that the authors' discussions were not really based on the real observation but rather remained very conceptual. I like the idea of using mobile devices to publish information as the authors propose, but this would require detailed survey of device capabilities, user interface issues, and so on. Unfortunately, you cannot find practical information to tackle with such problems.
Great future Mobile Web 2.0 to all of us.......2007-01-21
It is a great book to read. My first experience with Amazon and I make a good book selection to read. An open-minded book with lot of issues to think and rethink about wireless.

Cellphone: The Story of the World's Most Mobile Medium and How It Has Transformed Everything!
ASIN: 0814407536 |
Amazon.com
America is just waking up to the vast potential of the wireless Web. In Japan, nearly a third of the population already works, plays, and shops with wireless, continuously connected to a universe of data, services, and communities. The force responsible is a young company with a name that means "anywhere" in Japanese: DoCoMo. Another case study that examines a specific corporation for management lessons it can share with others, DoCoMo--Japan's Wireless Tsunami takes a riveting look at the world's second-largest mobile phone service that has, after only two years, a customer base as big as AOL's. Don't think of this book as an apology for the languishing telecom industry. Instead, it's an inside look at how creativity and innovation were nurtured at one of the world's stodgiest companies--Nippon Telephone and Telegraph--and how a small team of committed visionaries never said "Never" and created DoCoMo's extraordinarily popular I-mode technology.
For those who've read of the importance of "intrapreneurship" in corporations, here is a real-life exploration of that principle in action. Noted business strategists John Beck (The Attention Economy) and Mitchell Wade give us story upon story of the dynamic personalities behind I-mode, from NTT Chairman Kouji Ohboshi--who saw DoCoMo through a series of crises that would have meant early death for most U.S. startups--to CEO Keiji Tachikawa, whose post-WWII childhood gave him a keen grasp of the economics of disparity.
With chapter headings like "People-People Who Need People" and "Passion Is Destiny," this book sends the strong message that every successful business model depends so heavily on the human factor--a point that seems lost in the venture-capital-dominated model of the West. With lessons for all business leaders, in any industry, this book stands as a testament to the pivotal role of conviction, integrity, and personal passion in business success. --Charles Decker
Book Description
Almost a quarter century after their core management principles put them in nearly unassailable positions of market dominance, Japanese firms like Toyota, Sony, and Honda are still the standards to which other corporations aspire. Today, Japan's NTT DoCoMo is on the verge of attaining equal stature. DoCoMo is the world's second-largest mobile phone operator and, with its I-mode system, the first to roll out real, viable third-generation applications like Internet-ready mobile phones. This quantum leap in technology will very soon change the way we all send and receive information, from e-mail, paging, and voice to graphic business applications and entertainment. But DoCoMo's success came not as a result of following the hard-and-fast models of its illustrious predecessors. In fact, it is much more a reflection of the ability of DoCoMo's management to carve out a creative niche within the confines of legendarily traditional Nippon Telephone and Telegraph.
Beck (co-author, The Attention Economy) and Accenture senior consultant Wade examine the enormous risks that DoCoMo took in pursuing a "bleeding edge" technology which analysts thought was superfluous, and how their daring almost single-handedly brought an entire global market into existence. It is this extraordinary story and the simple, powerful management themes ingrained in it that will drive companies the world over to emulate DoCoMo as they did the previous giants of Japanese industry.
Customer Reviews:
simply the worst.......2005-10-01
Chapter one of this pathetic book begins by informing us that "Business cases aren't romance novels. Things begin, and end, with the numbers". Not so this book. As well as seemingly endless diversions into such eclectic themes as post war land reform in Japan, General MacArthur's victorious cavalcade into Tokyo, hitch hiking in New England, some unfathomable nonsense about the "mystic Southwest" of the United States, a reference to Mary Poppins, a couple of paragraphs on Bruce Springsteen, the problems of mowing lawns in Utah, the relatively high mortality rates of upper class Britons during both world wars, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the usual sociological drivel of upwardly pointing nails getting hammered down in Japan, some buzz words from complexity theory, some tips on putting golf balls and interminable pages of insipid tips on how to turn your (non Docomo related) work into fun, we are given six shallow chapters respectively titled Love, Inequality, Impatience, Luck, Fun and Strength with a further appendix called Intimacy and M-Commerce. That is followed by a mercifully short interview with Docomo President Kouji Ohboshi, which, because it was originally carried in 1996, is, like the entire book, totally irrelevant to the current market conditions Docomo faces.
Although the book's blurb claims the authors had unprecedented access to Docomo's top executives, there is no evidence of that in this over priced book. We are, however, told that Ohboshi "looks like a conventional Japanese executive. He is tall". We are also told that he has the style of a cockroach, meaning that he is impatient and hurries around a lot. Because cockroaches tend to get stamped on, it is a dangerous and, at best, very silly metaphor to describe a dynamic CEO of a thriving company.
It is almost as silly as the 20 or so pages given to the digital experiences of Yasuko Sato who, we are told, had to overcome the sad fact that "Mama and Papa Sato lovingly, relentlessly instilled good old-fashioned analog values in their daughter." Although Mama and Papa Hayes did the same, I have used mobile phones in the jungles of the Golden Triangle and the Andes Mountains as well as in a fishing trawler 300 miles off the coast of Iceland. Talking about the wonders of i-mode or mobile phones in the tones Mitch and John (as they annoyingly call themselves throughout the book) is like talking of the wonders of black and white TV; they are old news.
To impress on us how successful Docomo has been, we are supposed to be amazed that its headquarters are in "a skyscraper so large that each elevator holds sixty-three people. Sixty-three! In just one elevator!" As if that was not penance enough for us to bear, the authors appeal to our vanity by telling us that we are the new "cosmopolitan, global kind of thinker" because we are reading a "whole book" on Docomo.
Instead of giving us a "whole book" on Docomo, all they serve us up is the most shameless padding that would make the laziest high school student blush. Only two paragraphs after mentioning "those alphabet soup economics equations that make so little sense to most of us", we read "Okay, enough about boring economic theories" and we are back to the problems of mowing the lawns of Utah.
Technical details are also, we are told on page 127, "perennially boring" even though they are vital to understand Docomo's short history as well as its prospects for future success. The mobile telephony industry Docomo finds itself in is a young industry, one that will mature in time just as wireless, television and the Internet did before it. Until that happens, the industry's many intangibles will complicate our best efforts to predict the industry's future trends. Instead of trying to identify those intangibles, the authors let us know that "what we can tell you, after years in think thanks and universities and high-powered consulting firms" is that luck is paramount in a successful business.
This is easily the worst business book I have ever read, let alone reviewed.
Why the Japanese are so in love with Technology........2005-03-20
I've been looking for literature that explores why Japan is so technology obsessive, they have to have the latest of everything and feel utterly out of touch if they dont. Technology is fashion.
Having lived there a year i instantly recognised the name 'DoCoMo' and thought it was the perfect forum to analyse this exact phenomena, DoCoMo is the mother of all technology companies over there and really has become a part of the way of life there.
This book separates into chapters based on emotion, an odd idea, but one that works quite well. For me the Love and Fun chapters accurately depict the passion the Japanese have for technology and how DoCoMo capitalized on that.
However I wasn't looking at this book as an example of a business model. I skipped most of the facts and figures, though they are easy to read and very relevant. People who are skepical of this books practical use offering a business model that has a totally different approach, probably havent spent enough time in Japan to see how successfully DoCoMo has been. I believe this may be the future of the business model. But essentially i think this book would fit much better in the 'Technologies Influence On Society' section of the bookshelf.
Those who are researching technology as part of society are the ones who will really get a kick out of this book, there are so many interviews with developers, users, fanatics and novices, it is a feast of information that explains just why the Japanese are atleast a year ahead in the Mobile Industry. And why the Japanese are so passionate about their gadgets.
Not bad. Not amazing.......2004-11-07
I picked up this book with the hope that it would share some insight into why i-mode was such a big success. It did that only.
This is an extremely 'business/management' style of book. Full of hullabaloo, simple to read and gets somewhat preachy at times.
However I did enjoy reading it, although I sometimes doubt validity of some speculations made (Such as Singapore eradicating paper and coin based money entirely by the year 2008).
I'll give it 3 stars because it did give me the answer I was looking for but it wasn't a life changing experience reading it. Sorry.
Packed with important business insights.......2003-03-06
How has Japan's NTT DooMo become as big as AOL's customer base - five times as fast? This is Japan's mobile phone service, who grew to second-largest in the world in just to years. Insights into industry secrets, Japanese business, the wireless and computer worlds like make DoCoMo--Japan's Wireless Tsunami: How One Mobile Telecom Created a New Market and Became a Global Force a book difficult to easily categorize, but packed with important business insights. Highly recommended for all readers.
Not really about about DoCoMo.......2003-02-16
This book doesn't give a clear understanding of DoCoMo and it's mechanisms.
It's more of an unctious eulogy about people at Do-Co-Mo and the enterprise itself.
What we learn: Keichi Tachikawa had a keen sense of inequality, former Chairman Ohkochi is impatient, impatient etc., Keichi Enoki seems to be the lucky guy.
This is a latter day celebration of a Japanese enterprise. The rendering of the story could have been influenced heavily by the style of a communist storyteller, writing a biography of communist saint Breshnew or marshal Shukow.
Few facts. Tons of incense. Sprinklings of modern management thought.
Not devoid of facts, but these are incoherently interspersed into a rambling storytelling about all and everything.
This book did waste my time and continuous factless ramblings made me feel angry at times.

Book Description
Mobile communications are about to enter the third stage in their development, widely known as 3G. This will bring always-on Internet access to mobile devices. This book investigates the history of mobile communications and explores the technological background to 3G in a user-friendly manner. It examines the licensing process throughout the world, and draws conclusions about the prospects for 3G through a comprehensive analysis of the issues that have been raised so far.
Customer Reviews:
3G or not 3G, that is the question.......2002-11-21
It is very difficult keeping track of what is going on in mobile communications, especially if you are interested in the politics and economics rather than the technology as such which is covered in a number of other books listed on Amazon. Curwen is the first author to try and make sense of it all in book form, and he has overall done a very good job, covering the history of mobile from 2G through GPRS etc to 3G, introduing a short case study of every country that has licensed 3G, an analysis of all of the issues raised and a detailed look at Vodafone and Orange as representative operators. There's lots of wrong numbers out there in the media and websites, and great care has obviously been taken to check the data although the author admits the possibility of errors. The book's greatest virtue is that it is up to date, with the final draft of the text only months old. This isn't one for the techies, but for those interested in the wider ramifications of mobile communications it will prove a valuable - and commendably brief - read.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough, insightful, and clear.......2003-11-14
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the field of m-commerce. It thoroughly covers the field in an insightful and clear manner. It has served me well as the foundation and starting point for web based retrievals of standard documents and white papers.
Excellent analysis.......2003-03-13
The book is a definitive source for someone who has little knowledge about the field of mobile commerce. The beauty of the text lies in the way the topics transition from a novice level to an advanced user level. The author has covered both the technological and the business aspects of mobile applications. One part that definitely needs to be mentioned here is the description of public and private keys for secure communication that was incredible. Nowhere had i read such a lucid description of the public-private key concept. The book is an easy read but extremely insightful. A must buy for those of you who want to keep up with the latest in technology.
A complete reference book for m-Commerce.......2002-11-17
I picked up M-Commerce as I was curious where the mobile computing market was going. From where I was standing, I see a lot of hype and was not particularly impressed with the early WAP based services. Although relatively brief, Dr. Sadeh have managed to provide a good overall description of the mobile computing market, past, present and future as well as presented simply and clearly the technologies involved, the problems that need to be overcome and the successful business models that have been employed. As a guide to mobile commerce and it's potential for profitable business growth, I would recommend it highly to executives and other interested parties who are either thinking of jumping on the bandwagon or figuring out how increase competitiveness by leveraging on it.
Good overview of M-Commerce technologies and service.......2002-10-22
Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models" is an outstanding introduction to this, the next step in the e-business revolution.
Sadeh's writing style is very simple to understand and follow and he does an outstanding job of relating the material to everyday life through good, real-life examples. He cites current m-commerce usage in Japan and Europe and relates how it could be used here at home. Among his prime examples are NTTDoComo's I-mode, Nordea's WAP as well as vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia, and AT&T. You also get a good grounding in the technology and history of the mobile industry as well as best practice business tips that industry innovators have used to gain their competitive advantage. Overall, this is a great look at the technologies behind m-commerce and the various types of services it can afford.
Here is the listing of topics Sadeh addresses:
1. The Buzz Behind M-Commerce: Proliferation of mobile devices, personalized and location-sensitive services, new usage scenarios, etc
2. The M-Commerce Value Chain: Business models, content providers, aggregators, software vendors, equipment vendors, network operators
3. The Transition to 3G: 2G technologies, 2.5G technologies, wireless architecture
4. The Mobile Internet: TCP/IP on wired and mobile Internet, WAP architecture, WAP protocols
5. Mobile Security and Payment: Cryptography, digital signature, certificate authorities, public and private key encryption
6. M-Commerce Services: Information services, directory services, banking and trading, e-tailing, e-ticketing, entertainment, business applications
7. Next-Gen M-Commerce: Personalized services, location-sensitive services, global positioning services
Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a good learning tool. This book was used as the text for an m-commerce course I took during the fall of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Sadeh's "M-Commerce: Technologies, Services and Business Models."
Highly Recommended
Structured, principle-based, & balanced between tech. & biz.......2002-09-15
I have been following recent mobile commerce developments from both business model and technical perspectives and found that this Carnegie Mellon professor's book provides an excellent introduction to m-commerce, including recent developments in Korea and Japan.
The main goodness of this book is that it is structured (not messy) and principle-based (not superficial).
In addition, the way of explanation of this book is reliable and balanced, so I expect the life of this book is longer than some other messy books on 'mobile' stuffs.
I believe this book is also perfect as a textbook on m-commerce or supplement on e-commerce.

Product Description
M-Commerce: Global Experiences and Perspectives focuses on the emerging growth of mobile telecommunications and mobile commerce around the world. To provide a global perspective, this book describes approaches from three major regions of the world - North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific and highlights several countries from each region. These countries are significant because of their large existing base of mobile telecom users, their future potential, their innovativeness in mobile telecom technology development, and their leadership in launching new mobile applications. M-Commerce: Global Experiences and Perspectives contains chapters from authors of many countries, and while each chapter examines a specific country in-depth, all the chapters use a common integrative framework called the CLIP (communications, locatability, information provision, and payment processing) application-theoretical framework. These four core functions underlie various mobile telecommunications services offered worldwide. This conceptual framework facilitates a deeper understanding of the effective business strategies for m-commerce.

A bit shallow.......2007-04-11
It doesn't cover the themes with the depth I'd expect. It's just a bunch of "papers" sorted together, by different authors, with a very superficial approach (like other reviewer said, "subjective").
An edited collection of chapters based on anectodotal evidence.......2006-12-07
Unfortunately, I am unable to recommend this book. While mobile commerce is a relatively new topic, I expected more profound discussion. However, this book is no more than an edited collection of chapters, and does not tell much about how managers should make decisions or use mobile in their business. Moreover, there doesn't appear to be any useful theories either, because the chapters are largely based on anectodotal evidence.

A surprising array of sophisticated electronic applications that have no need for a tethering umbilical cord are already transforming the way we live, work, and play. Going Wireless analyzes many of these personal, professional, and leisure-time operations now in use by organizations ranging from Sears to the Dave Matthews Band to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, and projects ways their descendants could become even more ubiquitous. Jaclyn Easton, a Los Angeles Times columnist who profiled e-commerce pioneers in StrikingItRich.com, looks here at how the Internet revolution is evolving into a wireless reality. "Have you ever waved a Speedpass wand to buy gas at a Mobil station? That's wireless," she writes. "Did you ever rent a car with a global positioning system giving you directions as you drove? Did you know that clothing manufacturers are now sewing wireless technology into garments to track the item through both the supply chain and the retail chain?" In a manner that allows her to address weighty concepts without losing those of us who admit to being challenged by technology, Easton examines ways companies are using wireless technology externally to serve their customers and clients and internally to support their employees and suppliers. She additionally devotes a section to new businesses ("tracking what matters to you most"), markets ("Generation Y-erless"), and challenges (including privacy and security). The result is both provocative and enlightening. --Howard Rothman

M-Commerce, L-Commerce, things communicating with things.......2006-03-08
Mobile commerce offers the hope of faster access to information for the consumer. M-Commerce builds on both internet and wireless communication devices. Internet servers push small applications to WiFi devices and these applications, in turn, make information requests through WiFi portals back to the server. The WiFi interface improves speed to acquire information for the consumer increasing the likelihood of a purchase; the WiFi interface can submit billing information for payment processing with one tap to confirm credit card usage for bill payment; a confirmation code is displayed on the WiFi device and used to validate pickup of the merchandise; and speed is the motivating factor like the fast food chain in time performance. If by the middle of the decade, "the only way to reach your customers is via the internet, you'll be limiting your customer base". M-commerce brings the store to the consumer wirelessly and it assists the consumer in price comparison. The consumer can talk directly to the WiFi device reducing time to navigate menu selection. Sophisticated voice recognition software will eliminate the need to display all available choices. Instead, the software will use context and subject matter as it relates to voice interpretation too determine choice.
Location commerce is the result of the law. All cell phones or devices capable of making a call must be capable for an external call center too pinpoint a caller within a few feet. Position based commerce will become the primary source of new business referrals. As the consumer moves from one zone to another information is served up to the WiFi interface from local based directories. The user will enter in what they want and a list of services based on proximity will be offered through their PDA. National chains will be able to offer localized pricing of their products and services. The localized directories will be able to determine availability and make referrals to other stores within a certain mile radius, if the product is unavailable. The idea is that the quicker you get your customer the merchandise, the more you will sell.
A decentralized Transportation Wifi network potentially offers a massive opportunity. Suppose, each car was installed with a WiFi device that could communicate with car around it, accessing: speed, breaking, turning, and sudden stops. Potentially, the Wifi device could stop all accidents involving abrupt slow downs in traffic. Additionally, the auto wifi device could communicate with Wifi portal along the road querying for restaurant prices and availability, sleeping arrangements and prices, and music downloads. Billboards being replaced by high speed Wifi portals and massive internet servers bring services too consumers on the road.
Surprise - the world is going wireless :-).......2005-04-05
Surprise - the world is going wireless. Well it's not really a surprise. In the U.S., we're just behind the times. In fact, in most respects related to wireless / mobile connectivity, the U.S. places third behind Asia, and Europe. But, never underestimate America. We've come from behind before and we can do it again. The problem is that the U.S. is PC centric and up until now this has lead to lackluster interest in smartphone and advance mobile communications.
With the oncoming rush of Wi-Max and related technologies, the time to embrace wireless is NOW. Easton's book will help you open your mind to the future of wireless and the possibilities it represents. The book highlights that without going wireless we are still "tied" to our desks - even with laptops. Throughout Going Wireless, next-generation applications are shown, not for technology sake, but for their distinct potential in business.
Divided into three sections, Going Wireless is a most compelling read:
SECTION 1 - USING M-COMMERCE TO OWN YOUR CUSTOMERS AND CLIENTS
SECTION 2 - THE WIRELESS WORKFORCE CONNECTS THE ENTERPRISE
SECTION 3: NEW BUSINESSES, NEW MARKETS, NEW CHALLENGES

Emerging Technology - New Opportunities.......2004-02-05
Easton takes a very difficult subject and pieces together how wireless will make our lives simpler and faster still. We can get what we want, when we want it. We can make an order from a wireless hand held device and pick it up within minutes.
This book is made to order if you want to see where wireless is going. Easton is well researched and writes to inform.
A good book on new business opportunities.......2002-07-14
The book presents a wide range of business cases as well as scenarios where wireless technology is used or can be used. The author sometimes gets too excited about the potential of the technologies involved but she proves that, at least in some areas, wireless is revolutionizing business, creating business value by providing convenience, mobility, agility and improved data accuracy.
Awesome book! Exciting! Riveting! GET IT!.......2002-06-28
I probably sound like a paid endorser, but the truth is, this book is fantastic. It's written beautifully, contains riveting stories, and is packed with insights, ideas, trends, and more. It's written for anyone in business ready to cash in on the future. Wireless is the next big trend. This book shows you how to surf it to the bank. Get it. Get it right now. -- Joe Vitale, author of way too many books to list here, ...
