Book Description

An insightful debunking of the way charitable giving disguises American neglect of the public welfare. Observing that the United States has the weakest public social welfare system in the industrialized world, What's Love Got to Do With It? explores the extent to which the huge charity enterprise industry legitimates and supports this state of affairs. Independent philanthropy, the book argues, provides a cover for the harshness of America's free market capitalism. It also exposes the warlike posture of a state apparatus that focuses on discipline and correction rather than on eradicating inequality. David Wagner, a professor of social work and sociology at the University of Southern Maine, traces the origins of the charitable mystique from a historical and sociological perspective--from its religious roots in the missions to convert indigenous peoples, through the long period of the poorhouse, the rise of foundations, and the development of new alternative social service agencies. Wagner goes on to show how America has glorified its private sector at the expense of providing material benefits, such as income support, housing, or medical insurance, to its citizens. This has immense social costs, not the least of which is the institutionalization of poverty among many U.S. citizens. One of the few works to examine the overall role of charitable giving in America, What's Love Got to Do With It? is bound to spark debate and, ideally, reform.

1 out of 5 stars waste of a time.......2006-05-01

this book is utterly useless. the author makes good points, but he would have been better off just writing a short essay. the book drones on and on, every paragraph feels exactly like the one before it. saying something over and over again, hammering it in like that works sometimes but this authorly surely cant. go to borders, read the introduction and the last chapter, and then move onto something better.

dont waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and incisive critique of American charity.......2000-04-08

David Wagner's book What's Love Got to Do With It, provides the reader to an insightful perspective on American charity. Penetrating the veneer of "do-gooderism," Wagner exposes the abuses, distortions and deliberate social control mechaisms that have been a part of the American charitable entrprise since its inception. This book is a must read for anyone involved in philanthopy, social welfare service provision, or social work education.

5 out of 5 stars Baltimore Sun 2/6/00.......2000-02-19

"Wagner's book will be interesting reading for donors, policymakers and advocates for the poor...with charities' influence growing, the time is right to raise red flags -- and Wagner's (criticisms) are largely on target....His book attempts principally to raise questions in an unquestioning age."

5 out of 5 stars from Frank Browning salon.com review.......2000-02-10

"Wagner's concise and vivid chronicle of the rise of paternalistic American charity is a valuable handbook for anyone who wants to challenge the duplicitous nostrums that the vapid stars of both political parties have lately offered up on everything from welfare to the widening class gap to the impoverishment of public education to the more and more degraded public-health system"

Book Description

In locations around the world, sex tourism is a booming business. What's Love Got to Do with It? is an in-depth examination of the motivations of workers, clients, and others connected to the sex tourism business in Sosúa, a town on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. Denise Brennan considers why Dominican and Haitian women move to Sosúa to pursue sex work and describes how sex tourists, primarily Europeans, come to Sosúa to buy sex cheaply and live out racialized fantasies. For the sex workers, Brennan explains, the sex trade is more than a means of survival—it is an advancement strategy that hinges on their successful “performance” of love. Many of these women seek to turn a commercialized sexual transaction into a long-term relationship that could lead to marriage, migration, and a way out of poverty.

Illuminating the complex world of Sosúa’s sex business in rich detail, Brennan draws on extensive interviews not only with sex workers and clients, but also with others who facilitate and benefit from the sex trade. She weaves these voices into an analysis of Dominican economic and migration histories to consider the opportunities—or lack thereof—available to poor Dominican women. She shows how these women, local actors caught in a web of global economic relations, try to take advantage of the foreign men who are in Sosúa to take advantage of them. Through her detailed study of the lives and working conditions of the women in Sosúa’s sex trade, Brennan raises important questions about women’s power, control, and opportunities in a globalized economy.

Book Description

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN BLACK MEN AND WOMEN IN AMERICA ARE IN CRISIS. IT'S TIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S GONE WRONG AND START THE HEALING PROCESS.

The current divorce rates for black couples has quadrupled since 1960 and is now double that of the general population, rates of domestic violence in black marriages are skyrocketing, and nearly half of married black men admit to having been unfaithful. In What's Love Got to Do with It? Donna Franklin, one of the country's leading African-American sociologists, speaks out on these painful, complex issues, providing an incisive and riveting analysis of the gender tensions that are the legacy of slavery and its aftermath.

Franklin breaks new ground in explaining why black men and women have trouble relating to each other and examines their profoundly different starting points, which are influenced by generations of racism and injustice. She shows how black women's strength and self-sufficiency can be used to nurture relationships. Likewise, she teaches black men how to support one another and their relationships with women without excluding women, as has happened with the Million Man March.

The challenge of mending the rift between black men and women is formidable, but can be made easier. Understanding is the first step on the path to healing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wow this is so true.......2005-07-20

This books hit the nail on the head. Not only do we as black people have to constantly fight for our respect, but we also fight each other. I think this should be a book that is read in every book club. The only way black men and women are going to solve our problems is to discuss them and communicate. The only thing I didn't like about this book is all the numbers. I think the author over did it with the statistics. After a while I started skipping whole paragraphs. Other than that this is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars What's Love Got to Do With It?.......2003-09-19

I doubt that I would even consider another relationship, unless I knew that we were both conscious of the information provided by Donna L. Franklin's book.

It contains well written and informative validation to theories and facts that serve to answer the largely ignored phenomenon of why it has been so difficult for too many black couples to enter into and remain in stable relationships.

Even the therapy sessions I once attended, in an attempt to save my family eluded this dynamic. The therapist was seemingly unaware or otherwise unable to implement this information in addressing the unique circumstances associated with black couples...

As a matter of fact, I realize later, and as a black woman herself, she was probably struggling with many of these dynamics in her own relationships...

The answer begins with awareness!!!

This book should be standard required reading for all African Americans and Americans in general need to be aware of this information also. It's just part of the healing process for the whole country.

There is no more time to ignore the combined effects of racism and genderism.

I apologize to no one for being strong, but I sure am sick of being strong all of the time, especially while being resented and disrespected for it in the home...that I bought....

Thank You Donna!

5 out of 5 stars Why Can't We Just Get Along ???.......2000-10-10

Donna Franklin's new book, What's Love Got To Do With It, is a passionate, unequivocal indictment of racism and white supremecy in American society. Impeccable scholarship becomes a tool for her laser-like examination of what has gone wrong with black male/female relationships, and no stone is left unturned. No-one is let off the hook. Not white males. Not white females. Not black males or black females.

A crime has been committed. Who is guilty of this crime? Who must pay? Who must be held accountable? For the destruction of black male/female relationships? The destruction of the black family? The destruction and denigration of African culture and consciousness? The insanity of homocide, suicide and fratricide in the black community? Slavery is Donna Franklin's answer. Miss Anne and Uncle Charlie out back, in the cabin, in the bushes, in yo bed room, in de school room, in yo mind.

Insanity passing for sanity. Black man walkin' down the street mumblin' to himself, holdin' himself like he gotta piss. Black woman standing on the street corner with a blond wig on her head charging two dollars. Apein' mr charlie. Apein' miss anne! Playing in the dark, writin' blues for mister charlie, wearing black skin and a white mask, with no name in the street!! Because - Nobody knows my name!!! Not even me! What's yo name Boy??

Franz Fanon said it best: "The Negro is a slave who has been allowed to assume the attitude of [the] master. The white man is a master who has allowed his slaves to eat at his table." "Relationships between black men and women in America are in crisis," says Donna Franklin. "The current divorce rate for blacks is four times the 1960 level and double that of the general population." "Interracial marriages have risen from a reported 51,000 in l960 to 311,000 in l997." "The rates of violence between black men and women are higher than those of other races." ". . .Seventy-two percent of the African American husbands reported using a confrontational style of dealing with marital conflict. . ." "Forty-four percent of married black men admit to having been unfaithful to their wives, almost double the percentage for whites." Sixty percent of young black males between the ages of 18 and 24 are caught up in the criminal justice system.

In the end Donna calls for healing. But healing in this instance must be spiritual as well as social. The cancer has spead too far. The community is too sick for surgery or psychotherapy. To heal the rift between black men and women will take time. But time alone won't do the job, as Donna implies. We must understand the history and place today's black male/female relationships within the context of that history. This book goes a long way toward helping us to understand -- to understand that history and context. Holding up a mirror to American society, Donna Franklin reveals strange fruit hanging from the poplar tree. No matter how painful, America, you must have the courage to read this book!!!!

5 out of 5 stars What's Love got to do with it?.......2000-10-08

This book provides a much needed historical analysis of the emergence of the current tensions found between black men and women. I have always been interested in africian-american history and this book is one of the best history books I've ever read. It is supebly written and carefully documented. The author even provides hope by asking the reader a series of questions that can help him/her determine (if answered honestly) whether they are part of the problem or part of the solution. This book is both informative and thought provoking and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the black family or gender relations in the african-american community.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Talk!!.......2000-09-30

Donna Franklin provides an excellent basis upon which African American men and women can talk about the history that currently effects our relationships. This fabulous book is one to share with your partner. I shared this book with my mother. She, as I, was able to relate to the entire book. It allowed us to share different experiences and talk about our experiences from a generational perspective. Kudos to Donna Franklin for having the courage and vision to write this needed book!

Book Description

In this refreshingly down-to-earth exploration of human mating and sexuality, an acclaimed anthropologist looks at the fascinating intersection between the imperatives of our glands and genes, and the culture in which we live. Why do we fall in love with the people we do? Is there an alternative, more feminist, way to interpret traditional human sexual biology and evolution? These are but a few of the questions that anthropologist Meredith Small explores in her compelling book on human mating, What's Love Got to Do with It?

1 out of 5 stars Some good references but poor overall style for a science book........2006-03-01

Not the best book. Here's a piece of data (...) "A student once told me...there are 50,000 appropriate partners in the world for each of us." I could get this kind of data at the local bus stop. The millimeters vs. milliliters sperm-count typo (pg 111), i.e. "...most men ejaculate 3 millimeters of semen...", made twice, is inexcusable almost humorous to the point of visual silliness; there are way too many footnotes used for meaningless common sense sentences; and the repetition of facts, such as: "10 percent of infants are not fathered by those indicated on their birth certificate" (mentioned at least 2 or 3 times), as though the reader had forgotten what they just had read in the previous chapter, is very poor.

As far as the title goes, the word "love" is not discussed predominately until the last two pages of the book, where she concludes that love has nothing with it. (...) "Over millions of generations, sexually reproducing species have found mates, copulated, conceived, and produced offspring, and love wasn't really the point."

(...)

2 out of 5 stars Superficial approach to genetic psychology.......2000-05-01

This is a very easy-to-read book on the genetic or evolutionary basis of sexual behavior. However, in an attempt to make the topic acceptable as a popular psychology piece of writing, the author's coverage of issues such as mating choices, sexual behavior, etc. is very bland and superficial.

The entire book is based on assertions not backed up by research. This leads the book to look like a compendium on urban folklore rather than an introduction to evolutionary psychology. The very superficial explanations given to topics such as "why humans is the only species whose females have developed breasts" or "why even married men masturbate" make a mockery of what properly researched genetics have found.

Anyone wishing to learn about evolutionary psychology applied to human sexual behaviour is recommended to read "The Evolution of Desire" by David Buss. Probably the best thing written for readers with limited background on the subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, thoughtful and informative.......2000-04-26

I found that this book balances scientific data, psychological research, the author's personal experiences and area of expertise, and cultural influences on human sexuality very well. The end result is a thoughtful discussion of human sexuality - why we have strong sexual urges, how millions of years of evolution still affect us today, some of the qualities people look for in mates, and so forth.

While there is a certain level of repetition in the book - which the author, I believe, does in order to stress her main points - I did not find it redundant or dull; instead, I found myself coming away from the book with a clear sense of her position, which is not always the case with books exploring scientific subjects and incorporating information from different disciplines. The concrete examples with which she illustrates her points are well chosen, and I also appreciated her honesty about her own limitations in describing male sexuality.

I truly enjoyed this book and learned a great deal from it, from the physiological changes that occur during sexual arousal to the complex interactions between culture and biology, the obsession with finding a 'cause' of male homosexuality and the possibility that AIDS may, in some manner, affect human evolution. I think that those looking for an accessible, thoughtful, broad and informative overview of human sexuality will find this particular book a fascinating and educating read, one I recommend highly.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful overview of human behavior........1999-10-26

This book is an honest look at human sexual behavior. It covers a broad range of topics and offers some possible explanations for our sometimes confusing behavior. I liked the fact that the author used information from a variety of scientific areas: evolution, psychology, physiology, anthropology, etc., to explore this fascinating topic.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative.......2006-07-10

My fianace and I had a blast reading this book together. It's surprisingly accurate, fun, interesting and a good tool to help get to know someone. I learned some things I didn't already know about my fiance, as did he about myself.

I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys these sort of books and for those who genuinly find interest in reading about themselves and others. This book features good tips on dealing with others that are different from yourself. It's also quite in depth (about 5-7 pages for each "color personality") and can be quite helpful in a relationship.

This book has been a journey, not just a reading. I have reflected upon my past and have made discoveries that were not yet uncovered. I took the process slowly, reading, highlighting, outlining the content, journaling my thoughts. It has been fun, has made me a better teacher and a better person. It is a rare book that can do all this.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-06-10

What an inspirational, worthwhile book. Quite honestly, this is one of the best books I've ever read about methods of teaching. Wink and Wink, the mother-daughter author team of Teaching Passionately, draw from two generations of experience teaching globally, as well as within the current American educational system. They explain how effective learning can, and MUST, be measured through greater involvement with students, rather than underfunded, misleading -- and required -- standardized tests. Their methods will enrich the lives and experiences of not only the students, but also their parents. If parents in this country (and the rest of the world) want their children to love learning, and to seek education for the sheer joy of it, this book is a "must read." It should be a required text for every college student in the field of education.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for teenagers!.......2003-04-09

I read this collection of sermons in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. And I wished I could have heard them. This message is powerful (of course! It's got the power of the Creator of the universe behind it!) and practical. These words grasp the hurting soul and show a better way, a way out of pain. No sugar coating or shortcuts here.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for African American Teenage Girls.......2002-01-16

In looking for a book to give advice to a heartbroken teenage Christian girl - who had fallen into sexual sin- I stumbled upon this treasure. How refreshing to hear from an African American male on this subject. As a female, we can only give girls so much advice, but when the girls hear it from the male point of view, maybe they will believe what Christian mothers have been trying to say to their daughters for years. I also found the book helpful for parents as well. Have your teen read this book as soon as the issue of dating comes up!

5 out of 5 stars What's God got to do with your Love?.......2001-08-17

It went from curiosity to a life-changing journey. Dr. Thomas has delivered his soul to people struggling with relationship additions. He delivered his heart and faith to the fiber of my feelings. It was during the second reading that I transformed from teacher to pupil. I have taught teens for years the fundamentals of love God's way. Never have I heard so succinctly the truth God's love His way. Melodramas, relationship additions, sex-capades and stuck on stupid are all spelled with care and honesty from an author with an attitude. His book shook my soul and broke my heart. I knew God was dealing with my own weaknesses, then. When God's uses this author in real time, you know a booklet of this caliber has the passion and power of a preacher at large. He delivered his soul and saved mine. Read it and be changed. It may save your relationships.

I have read several books on prostitution, but to my mind this book provides a more complete picture of the lives and thoughts of Professional Women. Instead of the normal portrayal as being cold and uncaring, it shows another side to the lifestyle. The author has done her homework and has covered all aspects of the industry. I am now driven to buy a copy, to keep, after finding this at the local library
