Book Description

The ability to bring new and innovative products to market rapidly is the prime critical competence for any successful consumer-driven company. All industries, especially automotive, are slashing product development lead times in the current hyper-competitive marketplace. This book is the first to thoroughly examine and analyze the truly effective product development methodology that has made Toyota the most forward-thinking company in the automotive industry.

In The Toyota Product Development System: Integrating People, Process, and Technology, James Morgan and Jeffrey Liker compare and contrast the world-class product development process of Toyota with that of a U.S. competitor. They use extensive examples from Toyota and the U.S. competitor to demonstrate value stream mapping as an extraordinarily powerful tool for continuous improvement.

Through examples and case studies, this book illustrates specific techniques and proven practices for dealing with challenges associated with product development, such as synchronizing multiple disciplines, multiple function workload leveling, compound process variation, effective technology integration, and knowledge management.

This valuable book:

Highlights the application of value stream mapping methodology to product development. Identifies and defines the categories of waste that are specific to the product development process. Presents countermeasures and proven practices, based on Lean principles, developed for the product development process used at Toyota. Illustrates and clarifies the methodology by presenting actual case examples at Toyota and a U.S. competitor.

Readers of this book can focus on optimizing the entire product development value stream rather than focus on a specific tool or technology for local improvements.

4 out of 5 stars Toyota system- A good book.......2007-10-07

I bought this book as a part of my classroom text material. It's an interesting book that talks about how Toyota uses its system to achieve lean manufacturing by integrating people, process and technology. This is coupled with the lean design guide book for our text. It is informative.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those who want to study the next product development frontier!.......2007-06-18

This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.

1 out of 5 stars Academic Review of New Product Development.......2007-05-28

Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. Similarly to Demmings' focus on quality, every aspect of Toyota's NPD process was first developed in the USA, which still ranks as the World's leading innovation source.

5 out of 5 stars Best book about Toyota PD.......2007-05-08

This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for OEM........2007-04-05

Very interesting topics covered. Strongly recommended for engineers in the automotive industry.

5 out of 5 stars What a Phenomenal Job!.......2005-04-14

I read construction funding, prematurely perhaps, as one of my first ever real estate books - and I loved it! The book takes the reader through several once-real-life scenarios and explains the construction process step by step. I think that both ambitious beginners and more seasoned loan officers and developers would benefit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars MBA student.......2002-03-05

Very interesting  book; very easy to read.
As a small real estate investor I found it very helpful in understanding many of the ins and outs of real estate and financing, especially on the scale i would like to grow to.

5 out of 5 stars A first class book on Real Estate Development.......2002-02-05

The third edition of Construction Funding by Nathan S. Collier et al is a remarkable demonstration of insight and expertise. Collier and colleagues provide an exceptionally lucid description and analysis of the process of real estate development that is accessible to non-experts while being authoritative at the same time. In addition to being an excellent text for students and others interested in careers in real estate development, this book serves as essential background for all those whose responsibilities include any part of the development process.

Book Description

Control of engineering documentation, sometimes called Configuration Management (CM) especially in the defense industries, is critical to world-class manufacturing survival. This new Second Edition of a highly successful engineering documentation handbook is one of the best blueprints for constructive, efficient EDC/CM ever published.

Use the ENGINEERING DOCUMENTATION CONTROL HANDBOOK to get on track right away and make the release of new products and their documentation flow smoothly and easily. The book is packed with specific methods that can be applied quickly and accurately to almost any industry and any product to control documentation, request changes to the product, make those changes and develop bills of material. The result is a powerful communications bridge between engineering and "the rest of the world" that makes rapid changes in products and documentation possible. With the help of the simple techniques in the HANDBOOK, companies can gain and hold their competitive advantages in a world that demands flexibility and quick reflexes -- and has no sympathy for delays.

The new edition contains substantial additions worked into the book and several new chapters. However, the thrust of the book retains the same focus on basics, rules and reasons. The author emphasizes that EDC or CM must be recognized as a key business strategy, and the days of "throwing it over the wall" are gone forever.

Key Features:

- Expanded case studies and actual experiences with consulting clients have been added

- New chapter on Benchmarking/Surveys contains real-life results of several surveys conducted and analyzed by the author that allow you to compare your enterprise with those surveyed

- Interchangeability and change cost sections have been substantially expanded and given separate chapters in recognition of their critical importance in the EDC strategy

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Engineering Documentation.......2005-09-28

I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' for Engineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough Industry Configuration Management Resource..........2001-12-27

...but not for Software CM.
As the title says, this is an Industry CM book. If your need is for Software CM, this book can be used for general CM concepts and background (and to develop a strong understanding of CM principles), but no more (get a software-specific CM/release management book instead). Only a few brief mentions of application of these concepts to software CM. If your need is for doc. control/industry CM, then this is probably an ideal book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Inroduction to CM.......2001-06-08

Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry. Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation. Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry.

5 out of 5 stars Crisp and practical guide to setting up a CM system........1999-02-26

This book explains the theory but includes plenty of examples of how to set up an Engineering Document Control, or Configuration Management (CM) system. The examples in the text focus on an imaginary manufacturing company. The text does include some mention of tailoring a CM system for software developers.

The text is crisp and the books organization clear and logical. One of the last chapters includes what is essentially a checklist of how to put together a CM system.

This is not a one size fits all system. The user must use the material in the book as a guide to tailor a CM system to their company's requirements.

Overall an indispensable book for someone trying to set up or overhaul a CM system. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and comprehensive introduction to a challenging field........2007-10-06

Excellent introduction to Construction Management and the emerging design-build method of building. the author writes well and has a remarkable command of the subject matter. A library building block and a must have book for any Construction Managers or student of the field.

      4 out of 5 stars CM 101.......2007-08-31

I have run a construction company for years and we're expanding. This is not an exhaustive text on construction management but instead an overview. I found it well written and organized. She gives insightful anecdotes in a way that illustrates the topic, but not so much that it is annoying like some books.

I was able to reinforce what I already knew and it helped me formulate a new business plan to accomodate our growth. It would be a good book for those who are interested in getting into the construction industry, but don't know at what capacity. It will give you a great idea on what career paths there are in the industry.

It is also filled with information on where to go after you read the book. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because Sybex doesn't have any online information on the book anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Crucial Comrehensive Research.......2007-07-21

A must read for anyone in the design & construction industries, from student to seasoned professional.

      1 out of 5 stars Poor attempt.......2007-07-19

If your a construction industry professional looking for specific information, this is not for you. The book seems more suited for a student and does not provide any technical support.

4 out of 5 stars JumpStart or Reference?.......2007-05-17

As an experienced construction manager/superintendent, I appreciate a single-source, fingertip reference book. Saves time ='s effort ='s money.

        4 out of 5 stars Really Good Book...But Dated........2007-03-09

This book has a lot of great information in it. Alot of the information is timeless. However, this book is from 1992 and all the restaurant case studies are from then as well. As I read the book and they discuss restaurants like Mesa Grill and they speak of it as being new, when I know it has been around for 15 or so years, it just seems off. Also the stats such as average checks and other sales data is kind of dated. You could definitley learn from the case studies but it would be nice if they would update the book.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good- but dated.......2005-07-22

Need a book like this but more up to date. Very informative though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone in or interested in "the biz".......2004-06-30

I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California and decided (about a year ago) to try my hand in the Restaurant Business.

Before I could turn back, the lease was signed, money was coming in...there was no escape. I was pretty terrified.

I decided to learn everything I could about design, management, success' and failures. The principal way I did this was to order an armada of books about the business. In all I think I bought roughly 20 books. Most of them were somewhat helpful, but none of them approached the value of this fine book.

Chronicling almost 3 dozen successful cases from such diverse business' as China Grill and Farallon, every aspect of the business is covered - design, capitalization, management organization, revenue and profit - FANTASTIC.

I can't recommend this book any higher. It was an enormous help to me in putting my new restaurant together.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Insightful.......2002-02-06

If you are seeking concrete information into the whys and wherefores of creating and building upon a solid restaurant concept, this is the book for you. It is overflowing with detailed descriptions, practical advice, layouts, menus, square footage, operation costs... much more than I anticipated. Although at first glance it seems to be another glossy "picture" book with a high design value (which is greatly appreciated), it is in fact a true workbook and manual. The numbers are all here, allowing the reader to compare and contrast. If you are working on a business plan, this is ideal, because it is a great aid for making realistic projections. Restaurants That Work is extremely thorough and well worth the price. I am very pleased and my only gripe is that I didn't purchase this sooner!

        5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2001-08-14

This is without a doubt the best book I have found on restaurant design. From concept to completion and everything in between, this a truly indsepensible book for reference. Every prospective restauranteuer and restaurant designer/architect should have a copy and USE it. Martin E. Dorf asks all the right questions and explains possible solutions to prevent common restaurant design mistakes.
