5 out of 5 stars A lesson for me?.......2007-08-20

I enjoyed this book. It is a compilation of helpful and inspirational thoughts and ideas from all the other books and tapes currently marketed. Kind of a "cliffs notes" of self-discovery.

The author sets the fictional story in a hospital where an accident victim is recovering. He is met by his father, who he has not seen in decades, and his father gives him some advice and a letter before the father passes away. The letter contains details on three life coaches the son must go meet so he can learn and uncover his true self.

The first coach is a priest in Rome. The priest teaches him how to live wisely, using a metaphor of a stained glass window. You see life colored by your perceptions, like looking through a stained glass window you see things colored by the glass. Change your perceptions and life changes.

The second coach is the surfer, who teaches him how to love well. He teaches him to stop living in his head and start living in his heart. Live in the moment and enjoy what is happening right now. Everything you do comes from a place of love or a place of fear. Where are your thoughts coming from right now.

The third coach is a CEO of a brokerage firm. She teaches him how to serve greatly. Telling him you can get anything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want, and you must conduct yourself with the utmost integrity.

The majority of this book I have read or heard in other places. Its not new material, but it is presented in a new way. One part of the book talks about how every meeting with another person is your chance to learn something new. If you keep meeting up with people who are filled with problems or complaints, its because they are being sent to you so you can learn a lesson that you need right now. They will continue to be sent to you, UNTIL you learn these lessons.

I guess that makes sense. Maybe this book came my way because it contains a lesson I still need to learn?

4 out of 5 stars Great book - made me think.......2007-04-06

This was a great book and i really enjoyed the story. I did feel that it was very "simple" and rolled a lot of the messages that one learns along the way (and is looking for it) into one and have the feeling that i couldve saved a lot of time and money just by reading this book first.
Nonetheless, it was a very good book - easy read, very simple and extremely helpful. It made me think about some things and i "feel" good after reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and Entertaining!.......2007-03-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is written as a fictional story, but it is chock-full of wisdom and inspiration.

This book is about determining what really matters in life- not money, not material posessions, but the real stuff of life. The main character meets with three inspirational coaches who each offer a slightly different perspective and different advice on living an extraordinary life.

As a Professional Life Coach, I am always looking for books with deep wisdom and useful metaphors. I read this book with my highlighter in hand and I soon found that I had highlighted nearly the entire book! This is a book I will definitely read again and will recommend to my clients.

The information in this book is not new. Many other self-help books contain similar words of wisdom and advice. What was new about this book was the fact that it was an entertaining and easy read. It also contained many metaphors and examples that made it easy to relate to the concepts presented.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who is searching for meaning in their life. Give yourself time to really absorb the concepts and apply them to your life. You may find your life and your world transformed as a result.

5 out of 5 stars the saint the surfer and the ceo.......2007-01-19

a very good book...quick reading ..good insights...
i recommend this book and follow it with the book who will cry when you die...they go hand in hand..

3 out of 5 stars The best bit was the Surfer section.......2006-01-06

For me, that section held more new insights than the others, which tended to fall into the usual self-help talk. Didn't really like the overall style of writing, it was a bit cloying. But the Surfer section on self-love, abt taking care of yourself with the occasional self-pampering did make me stop and think, which was great!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good practical advice for business growth.......2004-10-14

I appreciate the format of the book, which provides perspectives from many different types of retailers and of many different sizes. Very interesting to see the different problems confronting each, as well as which issues confront all. Even better, though, is the approach each takes to common problems. Only history will show which ones are most most successful, but all in all a good book for people looking for ideas on how to grow their own retail operations.

I was very impressed by the women in this book, and more importantly, the issues they addressed. Trying to balance personal and professional lives is never easy, and several of the women had great pieces of advice on doing just this. Although there is never a way to truly "have everything," this book explores some very intriguing women and provides some very useful career advice.

Yale Management School dean and BusinessWeek columnist Jeffrey Garten has written a provocative if perhaps mistitled book. Billed as a "journey into the innermost thoughts of corporate titans," The Mind of the CEO is really about Garten's own thoughts. He makes no pretense at being objective, admitting: "I want to talk about the awesome challenges CEOs face as seen through what they said to me and as filtered through my own experiences and my own thoughts."

Garten uses his interviews with 40 household names--including Intel's Andy Grove, GE's Jack Welch, PepsiCo's Roger Enrico, and AOL's Steve Case--to articulate his own questions and strategies for CEOs to thrive during the "third Industrial Revolution." He interprets these interviews through the lens of his tenures on Wall Street, at Yale, and as President Clinton's Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade. Among the challenges he analyzes: what CEOs are doing (or must do) to win the Internet wars and meet the challenges of going global, why CEOs must emphasize the "true north" of consistent values, and how a shareholder is different from a stakeholder. With great clarity, he details the demise of several CEOs who resigned under pressure, including Aetna's Richard Huber and Xerox's Richard Thoman, and suggests that "a vision without execution is a hallucination."

Yet Garten's core concern--and one where he is most passionate--is how to expand the leadership role of CEOs on the world stage. He urges leaders to curb their ethnocentrism and to take more responsibility for creating a world environment in which everyone can prosper. By framing this issue of leaders as world citizens, Garten raises smart and searching questions for a wired world economy. --Barbara Mackoff

      Book Description

"Mr. Garten has sketched a role for business leadership that goes far beyond what Republicans and business itself have traditionally accepted.... Provocative."- New York Times

Based on extensive and highly personal interviews with forty chief executives around the world-among them GE's Jack Welch, AOL's Steven Case, Intel's Andy Grove, Newscorp's Rupert Murdoch, BP Amoco's John Browne, Nokia's Jorma Olilla, and Toyota's Hiroshi Okuda-The Mind of the CEO takes us on a journey into the innermost thoughts of today's corporate titans and paints a compelling picture of the strategic and daily challenges facing them. Jeffrey Garten's findings are a challenge to those who are suspicious of corporate power, those who believe CEOs should focus only on enriching shareholders, and even to many CEOs who see their jobs much more narrowly. No one interested in the future can afford not to read, think about, and debate this book.

This pdf version misses a lot of pages. Not worth getting it.

      1 out of 5 stars Vapid.......2002-05-12

As other reviewers note, this book offers little insight into the internal workings of the CEO mind and is rather filled with trite quotations and the author's own speculations. One inescapable conclusion is that the reader searching for some wisdom among America's CEO's or deans of Yale's business school is likely to be disappointed. Perhaps rising to the top is neither evidence of some greater intellectual power nor of an ability to articulate novel ideas nor even of any particular talent. Rising to the top is more a reflection of one's ability to acquire and wield power and thus it should neither surprise nor disappoint us that the "leaders" at the top, both in business and academics, aren't all that smart. Perhaps that is the lesson from this trivial little work.

3 out of 5 stars The mind of the Ceo.......2001-11-21

After reading this book, I have a deep understanding of what problems Ceos face in thier businesses. They need to tackle the challenges of the gobalization and internet. If they can handle it well, they can succeed. Moreover, the Ceos need to set up a true north so as to hold an organization together, customers would have much confidence to the organization.
In the book, it also points out one important thing is that, it is important for a company to have vision, but if it cannot executed, it is meaningless. It is very impressive, as the world is changing in every second, if you don't take any action immedately, you will fail.

1 out of 5 stars Mindless CEO is more like it.......2001-11-21

Somehow a lot of books get published that contain at best useless advice and at worse propaganda that helps to perpetuate the gross inequalities of the American (and evr more so Global) corporate experience. As you read this review, please note that I'm not one of those fanatical, badly dressed, no-taste anti-globalization vandals.
The Mind of the CEO is shallow and this despite the fact that its author, Jeffrey Garten is the dean of the Yale School of management (I suppose i can kiss goodbye to my application for a Yale MBA). At the same time it is telling that much of the obtuse thinking that has invaded management circles in recent decades has roots in the very academic circles that are supposed to enlighten it with something deeper. Gartner interviews 40 of the world's 'top' (you'll gain a renewed appreciation of 'Bottom'when you read what 'top' is) to find out what makes their companies successful. Jack welch (who proves my point further with his new biographical masterpiece Jack), Jurgen Schrempp - an odd choice given his fiasco at Chrysler -, Andy Grove of Intel and other luminaries. The interviws or ' chats' only show how muddy corporate thinking is. Strategy is the most invoked word and none of the 40 stars says anything remotely different from each other. Some of the brilliant nuggets include "Consumers are going to want choices that make sense to them". "The next big step of going global is goping to be be going local". I only wish the CEO's would finally learn where they have to go. Someone should show them the way.
The ultimate and inadvertent message of the book is that CEO's have no more clues about the 'marketplace' than the rest of us and even less about innovations in management thinking. beware the next management technique, mission statement and seminar.
Unfortunately, being unoriginal and offering repackaged stale solutions earns CEO's several dollars and hero status.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm could have been better!.......2007-02-03

This is a good read if you want to know what CEO's of semiconductor companies think. You need to have a basic understanding of the semiconductor industry to read this.

The book is organized into several essays and each essay has some overlaps in content as different authors have to tried to explain the semiconductor industry from a macro level. They all talk about the same issues. It get's boring towards the end as you feel that the content is repeated over and over again.

Good read if you are waiting to catching a flight or waiting to break up with your date!

        2 out of 5 stars boring, innocuous.......2006-07-27

Minimally interesting. Most of the CEOs seem to be just spouting innocuous platitudes. Usually about how well their company is doing, etc etc. Reading this book is like sitting through a set of boring speeches at some political gathering. Like Khandros' "Building a Winning Company for the Long Haul". The information content in that was very minimal.

Far more interesting would have been some no holds barred analysis of a CEO's company relative to its competitors. Or perhaps a reasonably serious look at technology trends in that company's scope.

        5 out of 5 stars Highly Insightful.......2002-03-06

I thought this one of the top 3 books I have ever read on the semiconductor industry. For once, it was very interesting to hear what the actual leaders in industry felt. I would highly recommend this title to both experts and novices in the semiconductor industry-or anyone interested in semiconductors in general....

        1 out of 5 stars Weird.......2007-06-13

Well, this is rather strange... the book arrived today but while the back cover referred to the book that I'd ordered (Inside the Mind of Leading Accountants), the front cover and the contents were another book (Inside the mind of Leading Advertisers. At first I thought that it must just be the wrong bar code/title sticker that had been stuck on the book. But it wasn't. The actual printed cover is the front from one book and the back from another. And surely this is a problem with the whole print run, not just one book. It's not as if a few pages were mixed up. The single piece which is the cover has been mixed up at the design phase.
        Sending it back!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book...Highly Recommended for Every CPA.......2001-10-09

I was very impressed by this book. All of my accounting friends and I agree this is probably the best "accounting book" we have ever read-especially for actual accountants.
