Book Description

Aviation technology progressed at a blindingly fast pace during the first half of the 20th century. Aircraft were asked to fly higher, fly faster, carry heavier loads, take off and land on shorter runways, fly greater distances, and consume less fuel with each new generation, and with perfect dependability. Pratt & Whitney's R-1340, or Wasp as it was known in the commercial marketplace, was a relatively large engine, displacing 1,344 cubic inches. Somewhat akin to the steam age, when triple-expansion engines the size of cathedrals ruled the waves, the R-4360 at one time represented the largest and most sophisticated of its breed. Nothing else in the late-1940s marketplace could boast what the R-4360 did·3,000 to 4,000 horsepower. By the end of the piston-engine era, Pratt & Whitney had placed into mass production the largest and most powerful engine ever built in mass quantities. In addition to owning a Pratt & Whitney R-4360, Graham White is the author of several books including R-2800: Pratt & Whitney's Dependable Masterpiece and Allied Aircraft Piston Engines of World War II. White uses a large collection of data on the R-4360 gathered from the National Archives & Records Administration in College Park, Maryland. Leaving no stone unturned, this book provides a detailed account of the inner workings of the R-4360. Also covered is the engine's development history, variations, and its military, commercial, and racing applications.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, what a book!!.......2007-08-09

Wow, what a book!! I wish all engines had this much technical data and pictures.

5 out of 5 stars R4360 book review.......2007-05-13

This book is incredibly detailed, with many rare illustrations.
Graham White has done a thorough and interesting history of this
fabulously complex engine. Plus, his history of Allied Aircaft
Engines of WW2 is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for P&W's Major Miracle.......2007-03-23

I would recommend this book unreservedly. If you are at all interested in the history, development, production and usage of these amazing engines and the aircraft they powered, this is an investment you won't regret. I'm on my second read through and still being amazed at the info.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Work for a Major Engine.......2007-01-12

Graham White's book on P&W's R-4360 is a fine and thorough study of one of the greatest aeronautical piston engines ever produced. If you are at all interested in the general subject of aircraft engines, or even engines generally, you should obtain a copy to read and enjoy studying and savoring it slowly over the months after you first go through it. The text is clear and it is well illustrated, all that a book on an aircraft engine should be. My only quibble, and it is a quibble, is that the down-draught inlet ports, a distinct feature of the R-4360, have a much longer history than Mr. White seems to indicate, having been used by BMW in sportscar engines in the 1930s and by Miller in racing engines even earlier; however, since these examples are drawn from outside his field of study, Mr White may be excused, and even were this not the case, the general quality of this work would win him praise not criticism.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-01-11

A very detailed book on not only the R-4360 but a range of other engines
and engineering designs. It is not a light read as it is aimed at the
more technical minded, but it is a thorough and interesting book

5 out of 5 stars Great under the cover ideas..........2007-09-21

This little treasure will have you looking at cast off items with a more resouceful eye. Many of these items would not get a second glance but the author has found interesting ways to repurpose flea market or discarded items. The project on the front cover is an example of a creative way to use those small side boards once part of old dining room sets. I am a fan of stripes, so the small dressers done in wide stripes has great appeal as well as a playful side. The techniques suggested can be applied to a variety of objects not just the ones illustrated in the book. I can't wait to go out this week end and rescue some unloved objects and give them a new lease on life. Undoubtedly this book is a great find...one of the best for sparking new ideas for those low on cash but high on imagination.

Book Description

In Styling For Entertaining, Susie Coelho reveals how ordinary spaces can be easily transformed into settings for casual entertaining or extraordinary parties -- with minimum effort and maximum effect.

Susie Coelho is today's freshest force in lifestyle. As a bestselling author and television host, her accessible philosophy and inspiring personality have made her a trusted authority on styling advice.

In this hands-on guidebook, Susie styles four areas (living room, dining room, patio, and lawn) in three different ways. Using her signature styling philosophy, Susie reinvents each space for a casual entertaining get-together, a seasonal party, and a special, one-of-a-kind event. You'll see that when the emphasis is on styling (which uses things you already have) rather than decorating (which generally means a lot more time and money), almost every makeover can be done in as little as one day and may cost next to nothing!

Styling success is inevitable when you use Susie's formula. You'll see all eight steps in action: planning the occasion; envisioning the ideal setting; developing a makeover style; creating a style board and using a "style file" (Susie's great organizing tool); painting your color palette; gathering your styling supplies; styling the space (by laying the foundation, softening the lines, and personalizing with details); and finally, styling the food and table. Susie shows you how to make a living room come alive for a vintage-inspired birthday party; how to transform a dining room for a festive Thanksgiving; how to dress up a patio lunch with French flair; and even how to turn your lawn into an exotic Moroccan lounge for a summer gathering. Lavishly illustrated with 200 full-color photographs, each of the twelve makeovers are as inspirational as they are informational.

Full of quick-results styling tips for pulling any event together with economy and flair to spare, Styling for Entertaining eliminates the need for hiring caterers or renting spaces. This essential stylebook will help you transform even the simplest occasion into an opportunity to express yourself, entertain your guests with ease, and most important...have fun!

      Book Description

While such staples as Anselm’s ontological argument, Hume’s criticism of the design argument, and James’ “The Will to Believe” appear in this anthology, about half the selections in Philosophy and Faith do not appear in other introductory texts. The books offers fresh topics, such as biblical literalism and “demythologization,” poetic imagery and religious belief, forgiveness, divine “vanity,” the hiddenness of God, heaven and hell, ritual, divine action, religion and the social sciences, and science and religion. The material on the familiar topics are fresh – Howard Wettstein on religious language, Jerome Gellman on religious experience, David Johnson on miracles, and Avishai Margalit on religious pluralism.

To help concretize abstract issues Philosophy and Faith presents selections that deal with vivid cases – such as how to explain the patterns on the Shroud of Turin and how mystical experiences might be explained by a contemporary, scientifically-minded observer. The collection contains articles written from the standpoint of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and non-theistic religion. The introductions are genuinely helpful, the study questions are challenging and useful for writing assignments, and the selections have been edited to reduce digression and assist students to understand main issues.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-12

I used "Philosophy and Faith" by David Shatz for my semester long philosophy of religion class and found that it was quite good, actually. Shatz's short essays before the main argument was very helpful, and I thought that the range of subject matter was very good.

There were several texts in the book that we skipped over because we didn't have enough time to cover them all, so keep in mind that my class did not cover every essay in the book. We just covered the ones relevant to the fallowing topics: referring to God in univocally or equivocally, the ontological argument, the cosmological argument, the teleological argument, and several reasons why belief in God is rational besides a guarantee of God's existence (like Pascal's wager).

Keeping the two paragraphs above in mind, "Philosophy and Faith" didn't have what seems to be the most famous single essay regarding the existence of God, William Paley's Watchmaker analogy (actually I believe the essay is an excerpt from a book that Paley wrote). The essay would have fit in wonderfully in the teleological argument section. It seems quite odd that this essay wasn't in the text.

Another complaint, this one just an annoyance, is that some arguments are titled with a certain number of points and then the last few points aren't even mentioned in the excerpt given by Shatz. A perfect example is Thomas Aquinas' argument "The Five Ways." You would expect there to be five ways, right? But in fact there are three--that makes a lot of sense. I would also like to see a few of the shorter arguments completed for their own sake.

As far as physical complaints go, the pages in this book fall out too easily. Once your book starts to age a little bit, you have to be really have to be careful that you don't pull on the pages or they'll fall out.

The good out ways the bad in this case so I give it four stars. It's a great text book for any philosophy of religion class. There are some problems but it was a good book and I was very happy to use it.

Produced by MiracleGro, the gardener's friend, this how-to book on building your own water garden and backyard pond or installing your own home fountain is fabulous! Despite the book's small size, nothing is missed, from design tips (with beautifully photographed illustrations) to selecting equipment and installation.

Pond/stream/waterfall construction using both preformed ponds and liners is covered. Another great feature is that the book is waterproof and can be taken outdoors to use as a reference while you work. The pages are heavy and won't blow in the wind. It's been invaluable to us as we build our new pond and patio. Highly recommend it as anyone, no matter how inexperienced, can learn to do the job.

        Book Description

First published in 1985, Chester Liebs' Main Street to Miracle Mile established the twentieth-century roadside landscape as a subject for serious study. Liebs traces the transformation of commercial development as it has moved from centralized main streets, out along the street car lines, to form the "miracle miles" and shopping malls of today. He also explores the evolution of roadside buildings, from supermarkets and motels to automobile showrooms and drive-in theaters. Both an historical survey and invaluable guide for reading highway landscapes, this classic work--which has inspired numerous studies, museum exhibits, and preservation efforts--is now back in print with new commentary by the author.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent social history of American cities in 20th century........1998-07-16

"Main Street to Miracle Mile" is an excellent introduction to the development of American cities in this century. What's more, it takes what could be a dull topic and makes it lively by looking at such structures as gas stations, motels, and shopping centers and showing how the changes in the architecture of these businesses reflect the changes that were taking place in American society. Good photographs from many parts of America illustrate the impact a more mobile population has had on the location, size, and design of the buildings that serve us. While this book has been used as a text for college classes, it also can be very enjoyable for the casual reader.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for "the talk".......2005-02-04

I bought this book and sat down with my eleven year old daughter to have "the talk". This book REALLY helped...not that I was dreading "the talk" or even worried about it. But this book gives such a wonderful foundation for 1) beginning "the talk", 2) provoking questions and answers between you and your pre-teen and 3) reiterating waiting. It truly is a springboard for more discussion and opening communication between you and your child. It covers both male and female anatomy (leaving room for discussion). The book covers the basics very well and leaves plenty of gaps for you as a parent to fill in for your child. Some parents may find this useful. Some may want to go further and some may simply leave it where the book does. Either way...this book is a must have for any parent that wants to discuss sex with their child on Faith based terms.

4 out of 5 stars Not for ages 4-8.......2004-06-19

Well written, thoughtfully rooted in scripture, an excellent book for parents to use with their own children. HOWEVER, it is NOT for ages 4-8 like the first 2 books in the series (Why do Plants Grow and Why Do Birds Build Nests?). It is for the changing adolescent and should be used according to Ecclesiastes -- in its time. Be wary leaving it on a library shelf where younger students have access. It is more verbally graphic than most parents of early grade schoolers are ready for them to experience.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource.......2004-06-10

As the the third book in the Miracle of Creation series, "What is God's Design for My Body?" is a wonderful way to gently tell children about human reproduction. This book uses kid-friendly examples to communicate the truth about sex and its intended purpose. Susan Horner accomplishes exactly what she sets out to do; she has written a nonembarrassing, discreet series that will act as a foundation for parents to talk with their children about sex using examples from the natural world and from the experiences of young men and women who have saved themselves for their spouses.
