If you thought The Notebook was a tearjerker, get out the hankies, pull up a chair, and get ready to have your heart monkey-wrenched by Nicholas Sparks's second star-crossed love story, Message in a Bottle. When Theresa Osborne takes a much-needed summer holiday at Cape Cod, she finds a lot more than a break from the hustle and bustle. On an early-morning jog along Cape Cod Bay, she comes across a corked bottle with a scrolled-up message inside that reads, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you, my darling, as I always do, but today is especially hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together..." It bobbles around in the same vein for several more paragraphs and ends with "...am alone on the pier and I do not care what others think as I bow my head and cry and cry and cry. Garret."
Garret may eat quiche, but no bother--before you can say "Look! I found two more letters!" Theresa is hot on his trail and determined to find this mysterious yet sensitive message-in-a-bottle man. She finds him at a sleepy North Carolina port, working on his beloved sailboat, The Happenstance. From there, a romance buds and blossoms into a colorful bouquet of emotional baggage. Theresa has problems with her past--or, more accurately, her past is a problem. She is so scarred from her "I'm a super churchgoing guy now that I've run out on my wife" ex-husband that she hasn't tried to date since her divorce some three or four years before. And who is Catherine? And what's Garret's bag, anyway? When Theresa finds out, she plunges to the depths of her soul and uncorks a whopper of a secret about herself, bringing Garret to terms with who he really is.
Message in a Bottle has the earmarks of sentimental tongue-wagging at its finest and should please romantics and cynics alike--it's sure to bring romantics to their knees, while cynics will be slapping theirs in laughter. --Rebekah Warren

Customer Reviews:
Kind of slow at first, but a beautiful and touching read!.......2007-09-08
I admit that I started this book with low expectations. The first chapter has the "telling rather than showing" part of books that I hate. I enjoy novels with big openings, not those that start out telling you about the main character. But as I continued to read, I knew Message in a Bottle would be one of those novels that would stay in my memory long after I'd read it. It tells the story of Theresa, a thirty-something divorced mom who, during a vacation trip to Cape Cod, finds a message in a bottle washed up at sea. It is a love letter from a Garrett to a Catherine, and the letter is so romantic -- yet so poignant -- that moves Theresa to tears. Her friend-slash-newspaper colleague advises her to publish the letter. Upon publication, she discovers more letters, also found at sea, sent by a reader and a fellow writer. Curious, she tracks Garrett down and meets him in North Carolina. Garrett is a thirty-something shop owner and scuba diving instructor who had lost his wife three years ago to a car accident. Grief-stricken, he has never been able to get over the loss of his wife, but Theresa soon changes things in his life, but will he let guilt get in the way of a second chance at happiness?
The novel is difficult to get into at first. The pacing is very slow, and there are scenes that seem to go nowhere. It also seems as though it'll be very predictable. But the more I kept reading, the more developed the main characters became, and the more engaging the story got. It is worth reading all the way through. This novel has one of the most touching endings I have recently read. It brought me to tears. Lately, a novel has to be very well written to bring me to tears, and this is one of them. You wish for a different kind of ending for these two wonderful characters, but endings like this one are the most memorable to me. I have only read True Believer by Sparks and watched (and loved) The Notebook on DVD. I definitely plan to read his other novels. I also plan to watch the film based on this book. I'm not a big Kevin Costner fan, but it would be worth putting up with his wooden acting to watch an adaptation of this gem. I advise readers to be patient with this novel. Yes, it is painfully slow at times and yes the characters, namely Garrett, can get on your nerves at times, but the ending is worth reading from beginning to end. I cannot recommend this beautiful novel enough!
Sappy Summer Beach Read =].......2007-08-07
First off, I am not a big reader. I read the description on Amazon and purchased it thinking it would be a good beach read. I had no idea how much I would get into this story! I got through a hundred pages a day and I just finished the book about 5 minutes ago. Let me tell you, it really gets you. I couldn't help but crying! This book I could read over and over again. It is a great beach read and an easy read as well. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good tear-jerker book and a romantic love story. Now, I'm off to purchase my next Nicolas Sparks hit.
A typical heartwrenching Nicholas Sparks novel........2007-07-08
The novel deals with two people. First a Boston divorcee name Theresa who hasn't really dated or felt anything for anyone in the three years since her divorce. She works at the "Boston Times" as a columnist. The second being a Wilmington, North Carolina widower named Garrett who owns and runs a diving instruction place and loves to go sailing. I bet you're thinking "how do two people who live so far apart end up meeting and having something to do with the title 'message in a bottle?" Well Garrett lost his wife three years ago in a car accident, but never lost his love for her. He started to write letters to his long lost lover and send them out to sea in bottles. Still how does this have any connection to Theresa? Well it has been said that everything eventually washes up on one shore or another so where do you think one of Garrett's bottles would just happen to wash up? Theresa ends up find one of his bottles in Cape Cod, but what does she do with the bottle and what happens next? You'll have to read for yourself in this intensely romantic, slightly predictable, and page turning novel.
thank you for your time,
Loran
p.s.- yes some of Nicholas Sparks' novels are predictable, but they are classic love stories. what more do you want?
Funny, Chilling & Real!.......2007-05-13
I love all of Nicholas Sparks books, and I defenitely put this one at the top of my favorites. It's as if it's a real love story, as if you have a friend telling you an experience of theirs. Guarantee to make you smile, laugh, cry and be touched. Highly recommended!
Charming, but certainly not Sparks' best work..........2007-03-22
For those of us who have suffered a painful end to a long-term relationship and wonder if fate will allow us that second chance to find another person with whom we can share our lives, 'Message in a Bottle' attempts to provide readers with just such an idea that there is always a reason to hope. Unfortunately, Nicholas Sparks set the bar quite high with 'The Notebook,' and I consequently found 'Message in a Bottle' to be a bit too predictable, melodramatic, and full of cliches. While I wouldn't necessarily advise potential readers not to pick up this book, I would suggest taking a look at some of Sparks' other works instead.

The Rescue.......2006-11-09
The fiction book I have read is Animorphs The Message. In this book a girl named Cassie and her friends try to save whatever is calling Cassie in her dreams from the bottom of the ocean. At first the others dont believe her but one of their friends Tobias also says he's having the same dreams. The kids morph into dolpins and go into the ocean and try to save what they think is a andilite. They incounter a life threatning battle with sharks and Marcoe gets injured so badly he almost dies. They try to finish what they started before it's to late and Visser Three finds them. I reccomend this book to a 5th or 6th grader. Also for whoever likes suspenseful action filled books. If you do like this book I inspirer you to read the whole series.
Cornwall, NY Sixth Grader.......2006-02-05
I am a sixth grader. The author of the book is K.A.Applegate. The characters names are Cassie,Tobias,Jake,Rachel,Marco,Tom,and Chapman.I liked this book because it has kids who can turn into any kind of animal. It is about friendship. It is also about a mission that they have to go on.My favorite part of the book is when Cassie turns into a dolphin to get to the ocean. What I dislike about the book is that they can not tell us there last name because if they do they will be killed or be made slaves.
A great underwater adventure.......2006-01-03
I thought this book was really good, the Animorphs took a good underwater adventure. I thought the whole book was fast paced, my favorite part was when they were in dolphin morphs and faught that shark.
One of the Best.......2005-01-10
This is one of the best books in the Animorphs. It is also a crucial part of the series. I have read this book at least ten times. Cassie is my favorite Animorph, and this is the first book told from her point of view. It's generally about the Animorphs adventuring under the sea to find out whether someone is down there calling to them, but there were lots of smaller bits that I really liked.
Cassie's acting a little fishy..........2004-08-28
Cassie keeps having strange dreams from someone who says they need help in the ocean. At first, Cassie decided to just ignore the dreams since dreams usually never make sense. But then Cassie started to realize that something strange was going on when she found out that she wasn't the only one who was having those weird dreams. Tobias was having them too.
When they told the other Animorphs about their dreams, they all decided that the one who's calling for help must be an Andalite. But the only way to find out is to morph water-breathing animals and search the ocean. So they aquire a dolphin's DNA and morph dolphins. But there's a problem. Visser Three and other controlled creatures are going to be searching the ocean. Will the kids be able to find the Andalite and make it out of the ocean alive--or will the ocean be their graves?
THE MESSAGE is a pretty good Animorphs book. Something I really liked about this book was that I learned a lot about dolphins (even though it wasn't meant to) and it's cool seeing someone's point of view from the ocean. Also, this book marks the first appearance of the new character, Ax. And Marco has a lot of hilarious and classic lines. So all in all, this novel--the first Cassie book--is a must read for Animorphs fans.
Book Description
Experience the Message is an exciting guide to today's revolution in marketing that challenges long-held beliefs about how products are introduced and sustained on the consumer's highly cluttered radar screen. This book reveals how today's companies can use credible voices and sensory experiences to bring the brand—its essence and its benefits—to life, how a company stimulates interaction between the brand and consumers in meaningful locations, creating a positive and memorable association in places and at times where the consumer is most receptive to learning or interacting with a product or brand.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read.......2006-02-25
Max Lenderman does a good job of illustating the sea change that is taking in the advertising world. His knowledge of the principles of The Experience Economy are sound and he uses them effectively to make his case.
Some good points, too repetitive.......2006-02-22
Overall, this is a decent book that makes some great points. The book, however, is extremely repetitive and can become tedious at times as the author cites the same examples and ideas over and over (how many Tivo owners skip the commercials?).
To put it another way, this book would be perfect if it were about 100 pages shorter. Another book that covers much of the same material without the repetition is Brand Hijack. I recommend reading that one instead.
Not Your Average Marketing Book! Great stuff. .......2006-01-12
I bought this book after seeing author Max Lenderman on TV talking about selling toilet paper to hipster rock fans and I'm glad I did... I got so many good ideas from this book and I have been using it to help think of new strategies for my own business. I went to see Max speak at a bookstore recently and he is actually a very nice, down to earth young guy with a great future... there are so many bad marketing books out there, but this one was right on the money and fun to read.

Book Description
The latest Creasy adventure takes our hero to Vietnam and Cambodia, ostensibly on a mission to rescue a US serviceman taken prisoner twenty-six years earlier during the Vietnam war. In reality, however, the mission is a decoy organised by a sadistic Eurasain woman, Connie Crum, who is a high-ranking officer of the Khmer Rouge. She has long harboured a grudge against Creasy who was responsible for the death of her father. A cat and mouse game between the two principles ensues, as each tries to out guess the other, resulting in a climactic shoot-out in a heavily mined and guarded Buddhist temple hidden in the Cambodian jungle.
Customer Reviews:
Message from hell delivers!.......2002-10-04
This novel was a great reading find. A.J. Quinnell writes with flare, denoting interesting characters and settings that rivet you to the last page.
Creasy and friends go back to the jungles of cambodia and vietnam to rescue an old friend being held as an MIA.
They are up against a woman with a vengeance trail that leads right straight to Creasy.
The bad guy girl is enthralling and mean as a snake. This has even a surprise that I didn't even suspect - and I like that!
Highly recommended.
A Cracking Good Read.......2000-11-05
I discovered A.J.Quinnell almost by accident when I picked up a copy of Man on Fire at a library sale. Captured by the authors imagination, fast paced yet detailed storylines and characters that literally lept off the page I have gone on to read with anticipation every new book.
Message from Hell continues the story of ex-mercenary Creasy, tying into the earlier novels Man on Fire, The Perfect Kill, The Blue Ring and Black Horn. But don't fret if you haven't read any of the preceeding novels as this book stands up just fine on it's own!
Creasy is drawn back to modern day Vietnam and Cambodia many years after he had fought with the American forces as a mercenary. A set of battered dog tags, delivered to long grieving parents, by a man Creasy believed to be dead, send him in search of a young soldier who was declared MIA during the Vietmnam War. Though he suspects (and indeed it becomes increasingly clear) that a trap is being set for him by old enemies his honour compels him to follow the trail. Accompanied by many of the characters that have featured in the earlier books we are once again treated to a rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns than Shirley Temples curls! Don't miss out - go on treat yourself to a cracking good read!

Customer Reviews:
My all time favorite Danielle Steele novel!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-29
Drama, Drama and even more Drama!!!!!!! What a great book. It is a page turning roller coaster ride that actually makes you feel pain in your gut. This book is not only set in the time of the Vietnam war, it is actually set in the war. It is so well written and Paxton the main character is so well portrayed. Everyone has to read this.
Mixed feelings..........2006-10-21
I have always read novels by Danielle Steel, even though I sometimes find her storylines repetitive, sugar-coated, and far fetched. I felt "Message From Nam" was more of the latter. The main character, Paxton, falls madly, deeply, hopelessly, in love with three men (who each in their own way make her feel like she's "never felt before"). However, I still was very engrossed in the story. I would recommend it; maybe I was distressed because she falls for these men so soon after the previous one has died! The ending was a bit long, but worth it!
disappointing.......2006-06-30
The style of writing is simply awful. This is one of the very few books I could not finish. The story is mediocre, the prose dry, and the characters over explained and analyzed. I was disappointed from the beginning, but plodded on for almost 40% into the book, thinking about all the great reviews I read, until I couldn't stand it any more. I almost want to give it only 1 star.
Very Very Enjoyable!.......2005-09-07
I was actually very surprised that this book held my interest. I didnt think it would, but then again, thats what keeps me reading Danielle Steel. This is a MUST READ, by far! Fantastic story!
Amazing Story.......2004-06-03
This is the 6th Danielle Steel book I've read and it is by far my favorite! (Zoya is definitely a close second) It has a fascinating storyline and the characters are so well developed you feel like you are right there with them, seeing the war and everything that went with it, through their eyes. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romantic and touching summer read - you will be hooked from the first page!!!

Customer Reviews:
Unrealistic.......2006-06-27
I thought that the book was sweet and charming, but it just didn't seem real. It was too fake and the problems that "Threatened their relationship" were stupid. When the lies came out it seemed that it would ruin everything but they were resolved in just sentences. It wasn't a realistic story line and I wish that it could have been more related to the real world.
Perfect.......2006-01-03
This book is really cool. the author doese a great job of portraying detail. There is no sexual content, so almost anyone could read it. It was awesome.

Spies in Spain.......2004-11-23
Another MacInnes thriller/romance, featuring (as they almost always do) an innocent traveller who gets caught up in cold war spying. I own all her novels, and this is one that I have barely ever reread. It's not bad, really, but it's just not one of my favorites. She wasn't quite at the top of her game when she wrote this one. I'd suggest reading it as part of the collection, but introducing yourself to her work with something else, like maybe THE VENETIAN AFFAIR or THE DOUBLE IMAGE.
Suspense!.......2000-04-13
This was a great suspense/spy thriller that captures the feeling of Spain quite well. The tale reads like a stock spy-thriller from the 60s, complete with pretty boy villains, double cross, murder and mayhem. The action and story are never sacrificed for the pretense of high blown language and useless descriptions. Instead, its a real page turner, highly recommended for Bond and spy fans everywhere! I rented it from my local library, and am sorry that its not available anymore for purchase.
This one never really gets off the ground.......1999-07-16
My Dad gave me this book, which had " Weeks & weeks of NY times best seller". I don't see how. The story is very simplistic. An American is caught up in political intrigue in Spain. It smacks of a very bad James Bond plot. Some of the characters are interesting, but they are never fully developed. You are left with a sense that something is going to happen ...then it never does. There was potential here, but the authors failure to get off the ground make this book a "pass it by".

Danger in a flea market.......2002-06-26
Investigator Sharon McCone has been asked to do an assignment in which she'll work with Willie Whelan, a man who sells goods at flea markets. Willie is concerned because a man is stalking him and he wants Sharon to find out why. As she begins the investigation, the stalker is killed and Willie is the chief suspect. Sharon begins to uncover some strange occurrences in connection with the murdered man, and before it's all over her own life is put in jeopardy. This is a good mystery which Marcia Muller fans will want to read and it has some romance thrown in for good measure.
Solid entry in the Sharon McCone series.......2001-09-29
Sharon McCone has a difficult assignment. Why is a man in a suit and a yarmulke following Willie - flea market entrepanuer extradinaire? What unfolds is a short (152 pages) but tightly woven tale of torahs, player pianos, Vietnam PTSD, cabins in the Santa Cruz mountains and Sharon's ability to see the connections. It's a solid (not stellar) book in the series. As a native of the Bay Area, I enjoy her musings about the locale as much as the story and she goes some pretty interesting places in this episode. Also, Don the DJ from Games to Keep the Dark Away is back so we have a little romance for Sharon.
Leave a Message for Willie.......2001-06-09
"Leave a Message for Willie" is the fifth novel in the Sharon McCone series by Marcia Muller. Willie Whelan is a vendor, who is also a fence, at the Saltflats Flea Market. He hires McCone to check on a man wearing a yarmulke who has been hanging around Willie's stall. The man, Jerry Levin, claims he is working for a group that recovers stolen Torahs. Later that day Levin is found dead in Whelan's garage. Willie becomes the major suspect in this murder, and Sharon McCone must find the real killer. All the Sharon McCone mysteries are well-plotted, and the characters, especially McCone, make them a pleasure to read. "Leave a Message for Willie" is a very good novel.
