"Libido maintenance is complicated," admits Judith Reichman, M.D., the frank "hormone maven" you've seen on PBS, The Today Show, and Oprah!. Few physicians are able to help or are comfortable helping women whose dwindling sexual urge interferes with sexual pleasure, intimacy, and expression of affection. I'm Not in the Mood examines the medical reasons for the loss of libido as women age. Reichman concludes that although estrogen replacement makes sexual activity more comfortable and pleasurable, it has no effect on sexual desire, whereas testosterone does. "From an ovarian point of view, many of us are testosterone-deprived, if not downright deficient," asserts Reichman. Testosterone deficiency can result in diminished desire and arousability, insensitivity of the clitoris and nipples, and difficulty reaching orgasm. She discusses the "good news" about and "dark side" of taking testosterone.

Reichman wisely avoids blaming testosterone deficiency for every sexual woe, however. She describes "Seven Sexual Saboteurs": psychological concerns, couple trouble, medications, disease, surgery, pain, and a partner with erectile difficulties. For each, she explains the problem and her recommended solution. She discusses (and, generally, dismisses) other products that are used or advertised as libido enhancers and gives advice about how to talk to your partner and to a sex therapist. --Joan Price

Book Description

The "hormone of desire," testosterone, acts on the brain to stimulate sexual interest, sensitivity to sexual stimulation, and orgasmic ability in both sexes. The amount of testosterone circulating in a woman's blood declines by about 50 percent between her twenties and fifties. The most common complaint associated with this decline is a seemingly unexplainable decrease or loss of sexual desire and enjoyment.

In I'm Not in the Mood, Dr. Reichman reveals the effectiveness of small doses of testosterone in reviving sexual desire and pleasure for women. Questions answered and topics discussed include:

This book really focuses on organic desire problems, mainly loss of libido due to hormone fluctations. It really pushes the use of testosterone to increase libido, and other remedies and procedures that are largely geared towards much older women (usually through menopause). THIS IS NOT A HELPFUL BOOK FOR WOMEN UNDER 40.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for Answers?.......2006-05-12

A straight-forward explanation of causes for loss of sexual desire in women. It offers psychological (body image, depression, stress, relationship issues), physical, and drug/medical reasons. For these it suggests the best treatment depending on the cause, plus has a section on how to talk with your partner about the problem.
Useful to know the likely causes and gives a starting point for changing things.

5 out of 5 stars Man as the cause of a woman's decreased libido?.......2005-03-11

There's a surprise category in this book. But, first, what's best about the book.

I recommend the book to most of my female patients because it gives an excellent description of all of the causes of a woman's decreased libido. Reading this book gives a good framework for talking with the physician and for taking responsibility for improved health.

Perhaps she underestimates the power of testosterone. No matter what else goes on, if that hormone is low, a woman will struggle with her libido. If you're considering changing the way you replace your horomones and want more details about the personal experiences of someone before and after proper hormone replacement, read Suzane Summer's latest book.

The surprise category is this: Men can be the cause of a woman's decreased libido. The way Dr. Reichman explains it: if the man has ejaculation and quits before the woman is satisfied, then the woman experiences frustration and loses desire for sex. Replacing the hormones of a few thousand women has taught me that this problem is much more common than most men know (the woman does love her husband and so doesn't want to tell him). Dr. Reichman tries to address this problem by writing a few pages about impotence in males.

Here's the problem, most men will not seek treatment from a physician (only about 30% of men with erectile dysfunction...impotence or premature ejaculation...will see a physician). So, I often find Dr. Reichman's category to be a real one: men do contribute to the decreased libido of a woman when they don't understand how to provide prolonged love making for the woman who needs it to achieve orgasm.

Dr. Reichman doesn't expand on the problem of men as the cause of decreased libido, but another common problem in my practice is that the woman comes to see me with decreased libido, then after I treat her the husband can't keep up with her. So, she goes from decreased libido, to improved libido, to frustration and decreased libido again. Because my women patients usually can't convince their husbands to come see me, I wrote a 15-day course for men: Anytime...for as Long as You Want: Strength, Genius, Libido, and Erection by Integrative Sex Transmutation.

Now, I ask my women patients to read Dr. Reichman's book. Then when the woman improves her libido (with the book and my hormone therapy), I give the woman the book Anytime...for as Long as You Want (which comes with an audio CD) to help her convince her husband to seek help in keeping up with her new libido.

Read both of these books and don't give up. Just a few months ago, I had a 65-year-old patient brag to me that she had her first orgasm just a few weeks after starting therapy as descirbed in this book. Her husband of many years only smiled.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the 20-something female.......2004-12-31

As a 28 year old mom with a 14 month old son and mild depression, I thought I'd buy this book. However, when I read the book, it told me nothing I didn't already know. I wish she could have written a chapter that reaches women in their 20s having these issues. I literally ear-marked 3 pages, which were the only three pages out of the whole book that applied to me. Moreso for women in their 30s-60s.

5 out of 5 stars A good start for client and clinician discussion.......2002-07-10

I have used this book in my clinical practice as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner for the past couple of years to treat Female Diminished Libido. I loan my copy out to my patients who don't want to purchase this book and have had tremendous success with my patients. I have my client read the book over a couple of weeks while waiting for lab results to come back and then we discuss her lab results and what she discovered in the book. The book has had the beneficial effect that most of my patients are able to honestly reveal if there is marital discord that may not have been admitted to in the first appointment. Opening up the way for a sex therapist or marriage counselor has been another positive benefit of this book. I find that many of my patients were reluctant to consider counseling in the first appointment, but were willing to include counseling as part of the treatment plan of their decreased libido. So many women learn about the female body and functions for the first time while reading this book. Every patient has been very happy with this book and no longer felt alone with this problem. They were able to realize that other women have suffered with this same problem and that, most of the time, there is positive results with hormones, exercise, honest communication with their spouse, counseling and/or treatment for depression. I plan to continue to use this book in my treatment of Diminished Female Libido.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "pregnancy" advice for couples.......2007-03-04

Are you or someone close to you trying to get pregnant? Then this is definitely the book for you!

Raymond Chang, MD, clearly outlines how to boost fertility in couples that are struggling to get pregnant. His primary focus is on traditional Chinese medicine, but he also offers some information on foods, vitamins, herbs and other supplements that can be helpful to fertility.

Especially impressive is Chang's ability to clearly explain both the conventional Western approach to fertility as well as more natural traditional approaches. Often when writers describe Chinese medicine, it can sound esoteric, confusing and downright batty. Chang is able to speak in terms of Eastern and Western medicine in a manner that allows the couple to feel empowered and able to work with their natural fertility rather than feel helpless and "infertile," as they are often labeled by conventional medicine.

Chang provides a very balanced view of fertility and integrates both Western and Eastern medicine to allow couples to boost fertility and become pregnant. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Getting Pregnant is a must read for any couple that is struggling to conceive.

This book does not make any reasonable arguements. Nor does it support it claims. I implore you not to purchase this book. It really is not good. Though, If you wish to read a bunch of fabrication, be my guest and buy this book. It is really quite absurd, the ideas that are pushed in this book.

If you ever wondered why we hear about the dangers of everything BUT nuclear power, this book is a good start. Nuclear power is the most arrogant, short-sighted idea in existence. Because of stupid decisions over the last 50 years, we now have to live with 50,000 years of radioactive waste. After you read it, weep, and call your elected official as the review below suggests, aplogize to your children for this leaving them this legacy.

The book is a must have for anyone who wants to know how we got into the mess called nuclear power and just how bad things are. FULL OF CONTENT, the book has document after document testifying to accidents, stupidity, and obfuscation by the nuclear priesthood. It's well written, well organized, and illustrated. Get this book, read it, and weep; then call your member of Congress.

      Book Description

It's Not About the Technology is about a phenomenon most dreaded by high-technology industry executives: a failure at the execution leading to a missed market window. High-tech executives agree that a critical factor that drives the company to such a failure is the breakdown of interaction between marketing and engineering. This book is predicated on the notion that the success of execution lies neither in the technology nor in the market strategy. On the contrary, it is shaped by the context of an individual, whether an engineer or a marketer. From this viewpoint, successful execution in a high-tech company is manifest in a confluence of 3 contexts: the technological, the customer and the economic contexts. This book tackles the big questions of how to develop the basic craft of the thinking required in high-tech companies. Drawing from basic economic principles and practical experience in the semiconductor business, it breaks new ground in our understanding of the complexities of high-tech execution.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction on marketing to engineers.......2005-07-18

Among many other things, I think this is a perfect book to bridge the marketing gap for engineers (and the engineering aspects for product managers). Product specifications invariably evolve as the product is being whetted - and new features may require re-engineering which could delay the product. This stuff happens every day in engineering organizations. Companies have to trade-off between product features and market timing and an inherent tension develops between development and marketing groups.

As with any problem the solution lies in acquiring knowledge - in this case knowledge of the workings of the various groups responsible for the finished product. The book does an excellent job of guiding the user through this process. Like all good solutions maybe the answer is conceptually simple!

5 out of 5 stars Its all about the context!.......2005-01-23

I heard about this book through a friend of mine and bought it. The Slashdot review appeared as I was half-way through the book and it didn't connect. May be it's me, but what I was reading in this book was quite interesting. First of all, this book takes quite an interesting approach to describe the problems in high tech community. It is very readable. The author covers *a lot* of stuff in 230 pages. I do agree with Slashdot reviewer that the author has only described his personal experiences. I've been in the field of IT for over 20 years and I think this is the first time a book talks so much about the people and their mindsets, without trying to offer a new buzzword. Refreshing. Of late I've been dealing with a lot of Indian offshore executives and I highly recommend that high tech companies (may be all companies) in India read this book so that they know how a mature professional ought to think. Part Three of the book is a classic introduction to the real product marketing, just the way it ought to be done in high tech companies. The context framework the author uses repeatedly is quite intriguing, although it just might come across as a little too-rigorous for a professional book like this.

5 out of 5 stars It's All About Appropriate Thinking.......2005-01-21

In the Preface, Karamchedu offers a core premise that senior-level executives in high-technology companies must have a specific mindset which enables them to remain connected, not only with their employer organizations and colleagues but also with their family members and friends. "This book is an attempt to record the [in italics] makings [end italics] of such a mindset. More important, we attempt to establish [in italics] why [end italics] the thinking must be in such a way." Karamchedu also examines the reasons for the failure for so many new product designs which are launched in the high technology sector. "Either the product is not what the customer wanted, or the product did not arrive in time, or [it] did not have a compelling advantage over that of its competitor's. Karamchedu identifies three reasons, any one of which could ensure failure. I was also interested in what Karamchedu had to say about an especially formidable challenge: To coordinate, indeed integrate harmonious collaboration between engineering groups and marketing teams.

Karamchedu carefully organizes 20 chapters within four Parts: The Thinking (e.g. "The Problem"), The Forward Movement Latent in Execution (e.g. "The Context of Execution"), High Tech Contexts: A Semiconductor Company View (e.g. "The Semiconductor Value Chain"), and The Craft and the Mindset (e.g. "Manage Expectations"). If I understand Karamchedu correctly (and I may not), he asserts that more often than not, failure in the high-tech marketplace is not the result of faulty technology and/or a defective strategy; rather, because of a lack of cooperation and collaboration between/among engineers and marketers. This lack of interaction almost always results in ineffective execution. Market windows come and go unrecognized until it is too late. Karamchedu responds to one of the most important questions posed in this book: How is it that, in spite of making remarkable strides in high technology product design, development and deployment of these products in markets, we are still struggling to create a harmony between marketing and engineering professionals?"

For me, Chapter 10 ("The Context of Execution") is one of the most interesting and most valuable because it is in this chapter that Karamchedu focuses on a framework of contexts: the technological, the customer, and the economic. All three must be engaged in driving whatever individual employees create, build, and deploy in the market. Thus viewed, "a high technology company is simply a confluence of the three contexts." Karamchedu views all this as a powerful new paradigm to connect the three contexts with the circle of execution. How? Please see page 92.

Lest these brief remarks incorrectly suggest that this is an especially theoretical, hypothetical book, I hasten to observe that Karamchedu seems well aware of that peril and for that reason includes dozens of concrete examples which effectively illustrate his key points. If I have a concern, it is that the material may seem too technical to marketing executives and not technical enough to engineers. I agree with Karamchedu that "the strength of any high technology product is differentiation and a focused approach to selected markets." Hence the importance of having a vision which provides a clear, unquestionable, solid identity as to [in italics] what we are as a company." Karamchedu views his approach in this book as an "experiment" and it probably is. Be that as it may, executives in high technology companies are indeed provided with "something useful to think about" as they continue to explore and refine the craft of thinking on which the success of their organizations so heavily depends.

      Well-done, Raj Karamchedu!

        Book Description

Medical Education and Sociology of Medical Habitus: "It's not about the Stethoscope!" is a new and outstanding contribution to understanding the working life of junior doctors. Here Dr Haida Luke uses a medical sociological framework to help us understand how young doctors fresh out of medical school enter the medical culture as junior doctors and begin the rapid professional education and intense enculturation processes. What sets Medical Education and Sociology of Medical Habitus: "It's not about the Stethoscope!" apart from other works in this area is that it opens out the field of research in sociology and inserts junior medical doctor culture right into medical sociology and professional medical education.
Central to this analysis are Dr Haida Luke's innovative use of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological framework and the concept of habitus. This volume challenges many of the myths of the medical cultural experiences and socialising forces that are an integral part of early medical training. Researchers in medical and educational social sciences whose research and teaching relate to issues of professional education, management, or research in health and medical sociology will find this work useful. Clinicians involved in medical education will also relate to the junior doctors' voices and will find the application of sociology to a medical clinical environment constructive.

        Book Description

Presents Nuclear Energy, a subject that is often considered off limits to the general reader, in a way that is solid and rigorous, and yet accessible to anyone able to use introductory algebra occasionally.

It answers the questions often left hanging in popular or argumentative books on this subject, without losing the reader in detail and unnecessary mathematical formalism. A practical and tangible contribution to the understanding of a vital piece of science.

Though designed and used for twenty years as part of the author's course for high school students, it's also for all the grown-ups who never got it in their schooling.

Begins at ground zero for the main subject. There are tangible examples, solved problems, and 45 illustrations.

This second in the "serious but not ponderous" series follows the award winning ("Outstanding Academic Title" by CHOICE magazine year 2000) book about Relativity, also written by Presidential Award Winning teacher, Walter Scheider.

1 out of 5 stars get the physics right.......2007-08-22

This Book had the promise of providing simple explanations of the science and issues related to Nuclear Energy from a prize-winning author. It follows on from a successful title with the same idea, providing a "serious but not ponderous book about..." the earlier one being on Relativity. According to the promotion, the content has been honed on the author's experience of teaching this as part of a physics course for twenty years.

Whatever the level of the language, the physics has to be right, otherwise the value is lost. On Page 71 in describing the fission reaction and what happens in a reactor, the author states that "the energy of the fission itself is carried away by the three high speed neutrons" and he then goes on to state that it is the energy loss of these neutrons in the cooling water of a reactor that provides the thermal energy that is used to produce steam and susequently generate electricity.

Wrong on both counts unfortunately: most of the energy in the fission reaction is in the recoil of the heavy fission products (nearly 100 MeV each compared to about 2 MeV in each neutron) and it is because they are heavy nuclei with high proton numbers, that they lose all their kinetic energy rapidly, and they lose it inside the fuel rods, never getting out into the cooling water, but heating up the fuel rods, and by conduction, the cooling water.

Both points are important for understanding the nuclear process and how a reactor works (or can fail).
I didn't read much past this point.

2 out of 5 stars Informative but Disappointing.......2002-08-08

The author starts off in the Preface with the words "Matter is not converted into energy." What crock. Without going too much into the realm of fundamental particles, YES IT DOES. When relativistic conditions (i.e., objects travelling close to the speed of light, etc.) are involved, there is a great probability of change in the atomic mass of the reactants (unstable uranium isotope w/ extra neutrons, etc.). One of the most basic concepts in all of nuclear physics is the type of decay involved -- gamma decay being the highest-energy transfer exchange. As he should very well know, all elements have a natural tendency to decay, and not all elements have alpha decay (two protons & neutrons break off); some emit a photon, a form of energy and therefore massless. The mass of the element therefore decreases with the decay. By the same token, as an object like, say a proton of hydrogen or what not, is accelerated and hurtles to speeds close to that of light, there will be a significant increase in mass (this has been proven experimentally). Enough said. Perhaps what he should have said instead is that matter cannot be arbitrarily converted into energy; this much is true. Otherwise, in a nuke explosion, where energy in the form of X-rays (gamma radiation) result from an unstable chain reaction, there will be missing mass. This is what drives people like Stephen Hawking to search for stuff like dark matter. The equation E=mc^2 was originally supposed to help explain the kinks in Newton's 2nd Law of Motion when approaching the speed of light. A consequence is that E=mc^2 ends up explaining the equivalent rest energy of an object when not in motion. Another consequence is that mass and energy are indeed interchangeable -- but ONLY at velocities that are nearly ridiculous to obtain, the speed of light. This is the turf of nuclear/plasma physics and does not need much more explaining. Once you dig into it, nuclear physics is not any more difficult to grasp fundamentally as long as you understand the basics, such as radiocative decay... certainly not so much as solid-state physics. Other than this one hot point, there isn't much else to say. I don't know what the heck the author was trying to accomplish, other than introduce the basics of nuclear physics, energy and all else. There wasn't a clear agenda nor an intended audience (high school kids? college students? laymen? who??). And the blow-by-blow description of the Three-Mile Island incident, while informative, was out of place. The author tries to cover too much in too little, and make everything look easy (which it is not) to the layreader. If the book was meant to show what nuclear energy is supposed to be and what its uses are, it does a lackluster job. I agree that nuclear physics can be shown in an easier format, and it already has been done in other books. The more technical aspects of nuclear engineering, however, will still be difficult to grasp, even for some physicists no matter what. I would recommend a much better book by Charpak and Georges, "Megawatts and Megatons: A Turning Point in the Nuclear Age?" It is a comprehensive and illustrative work on the basics and effects of nuclear energy, as well as the political intrigues that surround its applications in war and peacetime. To a large degree, the authors are fairly neutral and have no theoretical axe to grind, unlike this one. In closing, it must be said that understanding the concepts of nuclear energy is indeed important; in that vein, the various political and social complexities surrounding its applications must also be made clear, and that is a harder task to achieve.
