4 out of 5 stars A Good Text on People Skills & Relationship Building!.......2001-04-04

A very useful reference text for understanding people skills and relationships in your workplace and at home! The coverage is fairly extensive at an introductory level. It covers the key topics of inter-personal communication, self-esteem, values, ethical choices, attitudes, professionalism, diversity, managing conflict and emotional control. Key concepts like worker behaviour and how they are influenced are explained in relatively easy to understand manner. It also covers briefly topics like trust and self-disclosure. A must read for those who are in industries and work that requires dealing with people! Even the 'house-person' will find some ideas applicable to their situation and circumstances. The book is applicable globally though illustrations may be American, I am confident, others experience similar situations in their respective countries.

Book Description

How precisely do the Chinese negotiate contracts and other agreements? Do they follow conventions similar to those of European negotiators? To the Japanese? Is there a pattern or style to their negotiations? These are the types of issues examined and resolved in Pye's guide. The volume is based on extensive interviews with Americans and Japanese who have had considerable first-hand experience negotiating with the Chinese, and an effort has been made to highlight the areas in which there has been the greatest amount of confusion and misunderstanding for American business people. Pye examines each step in the traditionally long negotiating process, from the first contacts to the responses after agreements have been reached. With an emphasis on cultural considerations and troubleshooting techniques, Pye gives solid, practical advice for business firms and individual negotiators. While the emphasis is on practical business negotiations, anyone concerned with Chinese culture will find much to ponder in this book.

2 out of 5 stars So many words, so few pointers.......2007-01-30

The points of this essay could be conveyed in six concise pages but are buried in page after page of pompous prose. There are some insights -- but the reader has to plow through too many diplomatically (vaguely) worded paragraphs to find them.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Chinese Mind.......2006-11-04

I first read this book 20 years ago when a consultant in Taiwan. After reading it, I felt I had been given the absolute script for how my clients were thinking. I was already successful with them, but this book was tremendously empowering. Even in non-adversarial negotiations, even in life with my Chinese in-laws, the principles gathered and explained by Pye are apropos and valuable.

Pye's own training in psychology well equips him for interpreting human behavior (check out his book on Mao), and his knowledge of modern China and its behavior is invaluable. In this book he lists specific characterics and behaviors common in Chinese negotiations: the way they use information, the way they try to manipulate counterparts, the way they analyze and leverage, the way they manage concessions. And his book is not based on theoretical analysis alone, it is based on interviews and meetings with dozens of business people with actual experience. He smoothly blends and synthesizes a vast budy of experience into this book.

Who would benefit from this book?

- Anyone doing business in China or with the Chinese
- Anyone working together with Chinese professionally
- Anyone teaching Chinese people
- Anyone married to a Chinese
- Anyone going to China for more than a couple of weeks
- Anyone dealing with China in political areas

By the way, Pye's other writings and books dealing with China are equally valuable. In late 2003, the Harvard Business Review featured an article on negotiating with the Chinese that was excellent. It never mentioned Pye, but said very little that he had not articulated many years before.

Read this and be enlightened. I have more than 20 years of business experience in Asia, speak Chinese, and count this as one of the most helpful books I have read on this culture.

    Book Description

    This set provides a definitive scholarly variorum edition of Malthus’s Principles of Political Economy. It contains the full text of the first 1820 edition, including Malthus's own invaluable 70-page summary, and contains details of all the additions, omissions, and emendations that occurred between the first and the second, posthumous, edition of 1836. The first edition is extremely rare, and for over 150 years confusions and disagreements have inevitably occurred in the interpretation of Malthus’s economics because of the absence of any systematic record of the differences between the two editions. The editor has written a lengthy and authoritative introduction giving an account, derived mainly from contemporary correspondence, of the events and circumstances surrounding the publication of the two editions. It shows the relationship between the Principles and Malthus’s other writings and activities as a political economist. there is also an editorial commentary that aims to explain the significance and origin of the alterations.

      Book Description

      The last fifteen years have witnessed an explosion in the popularity, creativity, and productiveness of economic sociology, an approach that traces its roots back to Max Weber. This important new text offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of economic sociology. It also advances the field theoretically by highlighting, in one analysis, the crucial economic roles of both interests and social relations.

      Richard Swedberg describes the field's critical insights into economic life, giving particular attention to the effects of culture on economic phenomena and the ways that economic actions are embedded in social structures. He examines the full range of economic institutions and explicates the relationship of the economy to politics, law, culture, and gender. Swedberg notes that sociologists too often fail to properly emphasize the role that self-interested behavior plays in economic decisions, while economists frequently underestimate the importance of social relations. Thus, he argues that the next major task for economic sociology is to develop a theoretical and empirical understanding of how interests and social relations work in combination to affect economic action. Written by an author whose name is synonymous with economic sociology, this text constitutes a sorely needed advanced synthesis--and a blueprint for the future of this burgeoning field.

      5 out of 5 stars Organizing the basic principles.......2007-07-13

      From a highly qualified economic sociologist, this book plays a key role in organizing the basic principles from economic sociology. It is very useful for undergraduate students as well as those willing to join this field. By grasping its contents, readers will be able to move on to more indepth studies in the area.

      3 out of 5 stars Principles or Principals of Economic Sociology?.......2003-08-21

      Richard Swedberg has produced a self-contradictory overview of economic sociology. The book isn't as much an attempt at a systematic set of princples of economic sociology as the title touts, as much as it is an overview of the work of principal economic sociologists. Swedberg professes to approach the subject from the "interpretive" or "world-view" method of sociologist Max Weber, but then proceeds to frame much of the discussion in a structuralist approach focusing on markets, political and legal institutions, and gender roles. Curiously, unlike Weber, Swedberg confines the discussion of religious worldviews to a mere eight pages of his 366 page text. One can only surmise that this might derive from Swedberg's social location as a scholar originating from Sweden, a secular welfare state, and from his position as an academic who, unlike Weber, has not been immersed in the commercial and legal worlds. Nonetheless this is a comprehensive survey of the topic which will mainly be of parochial importance to other sociologists, which appears to be the reference group to which the book is addressed. Despite these limitations the book contains a fascinating discussion of markets in history, is dotted with humorous cartoons to lighten up serious subjects, and contains a 50-page bibliography as part of the 366 page book. Swedberg has done the heavy lifting for future economic sociologists. But any major contributions to economic sociology are not likely to come from the academy alone, but from some individual immersed in both the academy and commerce as was Max Weber. Swedberg finds that the common thread through the works of other economic sociologists is the central concept of "economic interests." But he doesn't delve into how interests are often socially constructed and often ironically may not in the best interest of the social groups espousing such interests. Unlike Weber, Swedberg glosses over which social classes embody such interests. For instance, the author omits any discussion of the rise of the new knowledge class in modern societies, which is antagonistic toward business and economics. Again, one can only surmise this comes from the author's lack of role distance on the subject as a member of the knowledge class. This book is the only readable and comprehensive text of economic sociology available of which I am aware.

      2 out of 5 stars A great idea but poorly presented.......1999-10-26

      The community impact evaluation methodology is certainly a complicated concept. While the author did go into great lengths to describe and explain it, he fell short of presenting it in a way that can be understood reasonably easily. In a book on a completely different subject matter (system development: requirement, evaluation, design, and implementation), the author Dr. Eleanor Jordan did a great job in showing how the various tools could be applied in the real world. Lichfield should certainly consider reading it before revising his book for the next edition, if there is going to be one.

      Book Description

      The basis of modern organization and decision theory, this influential essay has motivated administrators and students of managerial technique for more than 80 years. The author discusses eliminating inefficiency through a system based on principles applicable to individual and collective activities. A ground-breaking, and still-inspiring work.

      Download Description

      President Roosevelt in his address to the Governors at the White House, prophetically remarked that "The conservation of our national resources is only prelimi-nary to the larger question of national efficiency." The whole country at once recognized the importance of conserving our material resources and a large movement has been started which will be effective in accomplishing this object. As yet, however, we have but vaguely appreciated the importance of "the larger question of increasing our national efficiency." We can see our forests vanishing, our water-powers going to waste, our soil being carried by floods into the sea; and the end of our coal and our iron is in sight. But our larger wastes of human effort, which go on every day through such of our acts as are blundering, ill-directed, or inefficient, and which Mr. Roosevelt refers to as a, lack of "national efficiency," are less visible, less tangible, and are but vaguely appreciated.

      4 out of 5 stars Recommended from historical perspective.......2007-01-10

      The principles of scientific management has been waiting on my bookself for me to pick it up and actually read it for quite a while. Taylors book has had such an impact on the modern management ideas that I simply had to read the original work.

      Before reading the book, I had my opinion ready (which is not a good thing). The ideas must be stupid, I thought. However, when starting to read the book, I was taken by the situation described by Taylor and the thinking he had behind his theory. Much of it made sense, at the time and was not so stupid at all. I've thus read it in one sit (it's not very thick either). So what's it about?

      Taylor's ideas were about studying the work and finding the best method for doing work and then training the workers in following this best method. Finding this best method is "the science" and management is very much responsible for finding and improving the work of the workers. So, this creates the separation of planning and execution, which is often mentioned when talking about Taylorism.

      Why did he do this? Much of the reasoning, which is very visible in his dialog between worker and manager, is that workers are too stupid to improve their own work. They have no education and they wouln't be able to actually think about their work and improve it. This might have been a fact in his life. However, if this is still true today, personally I would doubt it.

      Taylor considered workers stupid. He makes quotes like "A trained gorilla would probably be better in the job than these man" (not exact quote). These statements made me very uncomfortable and therefore I've long doubted about whether it should be a 3 or 4 star rating.

      I've still decided on a 4 start rating. The book is a classic and very valid in his time. I recommend everybody to read it AND REALIZE THAT TODAYS WORLD IS NOT THE SAME. Thus take the good ideas (improving your work) but leave the ideas which were related to their time (strict separation planning and execution).

      Worth reading.

      5 out of 5 stars Insight into the Capitalist Mindset .......2006-04-24

      This book provides an incredible insight into the capitalist mindset and its (dehumanizing) treatment of employees, whereby employees are treated as objects which need to be squeezed to extract the most labor possible. If you've seen the documentary 'The Corporation,' you might remember that time trials are routinely used in sweatshops: the amount of time for doing every little action ("hammer the nail") is specified to a 1/1000th of a second. This book is the foundation of such management techniques.

      The crucial motivation for this book comes from the realization that inefficiencies aren't just material (ie if we use less rubber in each boot, we can make more money) but inefficiencies also exist in personnel (ie this person could be working twice as fast and making us more money).

      This book is fundamentally about distributed knowledge. Just as Wikipedia has become a centralized collection of knowledge which was previously distributed across thousands of people, Taylor's "planning committee" works in a similar way: it extracting and collects and studies the workers' knowledge of their own tasks. Upon finding the best (most efficient) methods for accomplishing each task, it redistributes that knowledge back to the workers creating a more efficient system.

      An excellent and entertaining read. Highly recommended.

      1 out of 5 stars Phrase.......2005-01-19

      I understand that some terms are well-known, but in 1998, to use the term "nigger in the woodpile" in quotes or not does not ride well with me. I have to read a handout from this book for a class. Had I bought the book, I would've returned it. But since I cannot return copies, I guess I'm stuck with it, but I will be complaining to my teacher about the use of this handout.

      5 out of 5 stars The Roots of Modern Management.......2004-06-13

      Taylor's ideas are commonly viewed as being antiquated because of the time and circumstances under which he worked. Not so! If you think TQM (including Deming, Juran, Shewart, and Taguchi) and Collaborative Management are the answer, you'll find the roots of of these and more in Taylor. It is true that Taylor applied his efforts mainly to work consisting of brute force - but that was the workplace world which existed then.

      Before reading Taylor, you should first get up to speed on modern management/leadership concepts. Then, travel back to a time before machines replaced human labor. (If you are my age it should be easy!) Now read Taylor and use just a bit of imagination to visualize what he would be doing today. Then, and only then, can you begin to understand and appreciate what this man and a few other pioneers like him did.

      Would his mindset change the way you do business? Then you'd better change because TQM and Collaborative Management are just Taylor on steroids. You can't understand management/leadership unless you understand Taylor. And you can't compete unless you understand both of these.

      5 out of 5 stars Still relevant.......2004-04-26

      Although dated this short book contains intersting lessons. The book presents scientific management. Scientific management applies to the management of industrial processes and is based on four principles:
      - Development of a science: The various ways of doing the task are analyzed and the best way is identified (note that further progress may be made due to new innovation);
      - Selection and training of the work force: The most suitable people are hired and trained to perform according to the science;
      - Constant help and feedback: The employees receive regular feedback on their work and help if they are falling behind;
      - Deep management involvement in production: Management plans ahead to make sure that the tasks are performed in the best possible way.
      The book also emphasizes the human aspect of management: change can only be done slowly and by convincing the employees of the benefits. This explains why it takes a long time to switch to scientific management. Employees need financial rewards for performing well and employees who create better practices should also be recognized and rewarded.
      Most examples in the book are dated and not particularly relevant today. They still provide data to judge the improvements that scientific management may provide. The language is also dated and politically incorrect. However if you do not let this distract you, the core of the book remains relevant. Even for modern intellectual work, there are many lessons that can be learned from the book. For example, for software engineering (which I am familiar with):
      - Make sure that you use the best practices ;
      - Hire smart people and give them the right tools;
      - Give feedback on performance and training when needed;
      - Actively manage the project, especially the scope of the project when changes occur.
      Although scientific management can be applied to turn employees into automata, there is something good about its emphasis on hard numbers and best practices.
      I suggest that you read the book with an open mind and pick the core material that applies to your situation.

          Book Description

          Why do things always get harder before they get easier? Why is foresight useful? What are the real megatrends? What does foresight really cost? Who should support it?
