      Book Description

Creating civic will by engaging citizens on the toughest public problems helps break legislative and bureaucratic gridlock and restores trust in public institutions. This book shows you how to do it.
--The Honorable Federico Pena, U.S. Secretary of Transportation

The leaders who are most effective in addressing public issues are those who have the credibility to bring together the right people to create visions and solve problems. Drawing on their extensive research, as well as on the advice and guidance of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field, David Chrislip and Carl Larson show how elected officials and other civic leaders can generate the civic will to break through legislative and bureaucratic gridlock, deal with complex issues, and engage frustrated and angry citizens. They also describe how to design, initiate, and sustain a constructive, collaborative process. This groundbreaking book provides insight and answers to the major challenges facing communities today.

5 out of 5 stars This book in not about LEADERSHIP !!!.......2007-08-31

This book is not about te leadership; it's about on how to keep your head, when all around you are loosing theirs.

As a Polish native I knew Mr. Giuliani only from TV. I did not like the guy so much. I believed his 'persona' is nothing more than that of skillful politician trying to attract voters attention.
The book gave me a new perspective on Mr. Giuliani. I finally found a man that was independent in his decison-making and took the full resposibility for all actions. Hope others cities (not only in US) will be belssed too.

This is the best part of the book that describes Giuliani's leadership:

'... rest of us moved to the next order of business -a strip club that planned to open in Midlanad Beach... Sunny Mindel read from the morning's Staten Island Advance, nothing that the community was lining up against it. A dissenting voice gave the idea of a new club two thumbs up. Deputy Mayr Bob Harding responded with a wisecrack : "Are you sure that was his thumb?" I asked whether the Buildings Department had confirmed whether the club conformed to all applicable buildings codes and permits. The Buildings Department spokesman quoted in the Advance claimed that the city could not do anything until it opened, which I considered ridiculous. I asked JOe Rose, chairman of the City Planning Commission, to discover not only who was listed as the owner but who really owned the place. My years as a prosecutor hat thought me that the name on the paperwork did not always tally with the full story'

      5 out of 5 stars america's mayor.......2007-08-17

I found this book in the business section, and I wonder, is that where it really belongs? I'm not so sure. It's more of a memoir of Giuliani's time as mayor of New York City, sprinkled liberally with his work as a lawyer, arranged around certain principles that Giuliani governs by. With his upcoming bid for the presidency it is a valuable book to read so that you can see his views (liberal Republican) and how he changed NYC from the cesspool it was back into the center of American life that it now is. Great book and it proves, there are Republicans out there worth voting for.

4 out of 5 stars This Guy Will Sure Make an Interesting President.......2007-08-10

Bottom Line: Here's the great story of New York City's Turnaround from the guy who rightly gets the bulk of the credit.

What You Will Learn: Rudy Guiliani is a nonstop dynamo who seemingly tamed what was once known as the ungovernable city by the force of his giant personality, ceaseless will, and bottomless energy. After reading the book you will have no doubt that "America's Mayor" will work 20 hours a day in the country's interest if elected President. He is someone with a strong backbone and a fighting spirit. A tough man for tough times.

Parting Shot: A good tale, well written, from a man who may one day have soon have a great influence over all of us.

      4 out of 5 stars What a guy-.......2007-08-05

Before 9-11 even happened, I knew there was something special about the Mayor of NY. He had this fearless attitude towards the city which people had once though impossible to 'clean', and he did it.
This book details the traits and methods used by someone who is a proven, successful leader- and it lends great examples for anyone looking to take charge of anything, from a business, to their own life.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-15

Rudy is a great leader and he guides us the events of 9/11 and how he truely developed his leadership.
      Highly recommend this book!

      Book Description

City, county and school district elected officials annually deal with multi-million, sometime billion dollar budgets. But many have little, if any, knowledge about local government financial matters when first elected. Written in an easy to understand style, this book provides beginning and seasoned elected officials and public administrators with the fiscal awareness to confidently make good budget and financial decisions. Local government is more complex today and there are more opportunities for poor judgement, conflicts of interest, embezzlement and fraud. The best antidote is an informed constituency that insists on good government and accountability. Community members, homeowners groups, business people, unions, service organizations, public watchdogs and newspaper reporters who want to assess their local elected officials' performance will find this book invaluable. Each chapter begins with a real life story such as the city manager who used the city's credit card to go on an lavish shopping spree, the city that used debt to mask it's huge deficit or the school superintendent who sacrificed the district's solvency to create an award winning curriculum. Vignettes from over 77 different local governments across the country are used to buttress the suggested tips and techniques.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent budget, financial and treasury primer........1999-03-18

As an elected Treasurer and local government finance director for the past several years, I found this book to be an excellent primer for all elected and appointed officials. The practical advice offered by Mr. Wood is based on his experience and input from his peers and is extremely valuable. The book is written in a very informal and concise way and should be required reading for all elected officials. In fact, I gave this book to each City Council member and they have all indicated that this book provided excellent financial advice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for the Government Watchdog.......1998-09-30

Len Wood presents Dollars and Sense in a practical manner enabling readers to absorb its content. A must read book for those that "watch" their local governments, school districts and elected officials. Written for fast reading, yet covers the subject matter extensively. If you want to be certain your local government is working at its fullest potential, Dollars & Sense can be a great help to you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for people interested in local government........1998-06-14

What a delightful book. The author has presented his subject in an understandable and capitivating manner. He does this by using lots of real life vignettes to make his points. People who want to know what their local officials should and should not be doing will want to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide for Achieving Job Longevity in the Public Sector.......1998-05-06

Here is a "no holds barred" approach to describing "real life" shortcomings in handling public finances, and then providing tips to local government policy makers and managers on how to avoid a similiar circumstance.

Len Wood writes from first hand knowledge and experience. He describes the situation; outlines the facts; details the results; and provides the reader with suggestions to lessen financial risk and/or failure in the expenditure of public funds.

While the author's primary target is the newly elected official, the importance of this work to experienced elected and appointed public officals cannot be overstated. No one who has worked in the public sector can peruse this book without saying, "There, but for the grace of God, go I!"

      Book Description

When the landmark book Collaborative Leadership was first published in 1994, it described the premise, principles, and leadership characteristics of successful collaboration. The book outlined an innovative way of building partnerships to solve the civic problems too big for anyone to solve alone as well as a new type of leadership that brings together diverse stakeholders to solve a community's problems. While that book provides a much-needed framework for working together, The Collaborative Leadership Fieldbook offers nonprofit practitioners, community leaders, and public officials a practical, hands-on resource. It presents the tools needed for applying the lessons learned, powerful approaches that get results, and guidance for solving complex community problems. In clear and concise terms, the Fieldbook
