Building a coalition? Read this book first.......2007-06-24
In 2004 a group of 100+ nonprofit, business, and government entities in Rhode Island began collaborating on one goal: to get thousands of new affordable housing units publicly funded and built. It was a long shot at best. Yet, in 2006, the HousingWorks RI (HWRI) coalition could claim a major victory when voters overwhelmingly approved a $50 million bond for affordable housing. The best book on collaboration.......2002-12-10
This book will be the standard for all other books about collaboration to measure themselves. Mr. Chrislip is among the best facilitators of collaborative processes anywhere. The author is also a skilled teacher and is able to convey both his knowledge and lessons of experience in this book. Clearly written, this book is well balanced between intellectual knowledge and practical experience. A step-by-step pathway is presented as well as specific examples of successful collaborations. Anyone interested or involved in collaboration in the public or private sector will benefit from this book. Facilitators of collaborative efforts will find themselves pulling this book off the shelf often as a useful guide and reference.

In 1949, lawyer, historian, and journalist Carey McWilliams stepped back to assess the state of California at the end of its first one hundred years--its history, population, politics, agriculture, and social concerns. As he examined the reasons for the prodigious growth and productivity that have characterized California since the Gold Rush, he praised the vitality of the new citizens who had come from all over the world to populate the state in a very short time. But he also made clear how brutally the new Californians dealt with "the Indian problem," the water problem, and the need for migrant labor to facilitate California's massive and highly profitable agricultural industry. As we look back now on 150 years of statehood, it is particularly useful to place the events of the past fifty years in the context of McWilliams's assessment in California: The Great Exception. Lewis Lapham has written a new foreword for this edition.

That is how California's emergence is described by the exemplary Carey McWilliams, journalist, social critic, and keen observer of all things Californian.
The book is dated: it was written in '49 and lightly updated in '74 and centers primarily on San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is a measure of McWilliams' penetrating and witty grasp of the state and its foibles, follies, and fandangos that most of what he wrote is still so relevant and even indispensable.
McWilliams' central premise is that the discovery of gold catapulted California through what took other regions of the planet centuries to go through--hence our individualism, do-it-yourself lifestyles, and general motion and mayhem. We've been doing reenactments of the Gold Rush ever since. As he puts it: "Essentially California developed 'outside' the framework, the continuum, of the American frontier. The difference is that between a child raised in the home of his parents, with relatives and familiar surroundings, and the child taken from his home at an early age and brought up in a remote and different environment." Quite so. In a nation of wandering pioneers we are largely, even now, somehow a state of orphans.
California as "the great exception," then, not in terms of snobbery or entitlement, but of being the place where so many Americans--and men from other countries--rushed in to pan for gold, and stayed, and established a tradition of messy but vital cultural infusions. Tip the continent sideways, someone once said, and what falls down lands in California, land of wonder and many griffins.

The description of this product was on target, and the book came in very good condition. Hardly any writing in it, and not water damaged! The textbook was a very reasonable price and I'll be sure to shop on Amazon again for textbooks.
The group I purchased from was quick, had great customer service, and they replied to my email of questions very promptly. I was very satisfied with the product, the shipment, the entire process really.
City politics.......2002-10-14
This is a pretty informative and interesting book. I would reccomend it to someone interested in persuing an education in urban politics.
Policies and corruption in the city.......2000-05-28
This is a good read for anyone who is interrested in the development of the city and the politics within. It opens with the birth of the city and how advances in technology led to the outward expansion of the city. One of the most interresting features is how the book describes the growth of the politcal machine in Chicago. In a later chapter, the authors then compare the fiscal policies of Chicago and New York City and how machine politics may have been the key to Chicago's success. The book also goes into detail about "white flight": the moving of the middle/upper-class sectors away from the city to settle into different types of suburbs. These suburbs then become a self-sustaining entity capable of enacting their own governmental policies which include exclusionary tactics designed to weed out those of lower incomes, certain age brackets, or those of an "unacceptable" racial background. It then goes into detail about the Court's opinion on these exclusionary policies. If you're interrested in how cities and urban politics are created then this book is a great start.
