Book Description

The author of Video Night in Kathmandu ups the ante on himself in this sublimely evocative and acerbically funny tour through the world's loneliest and most eccentric places. From Iceland to Bhutan to Argentina, Iyer remains both uncannily observant and hilarious.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Witty and Insightful ..........2005-08-09

Pico's short book is full of sharp and witty humor conjugated with intelligent insightful observations. He combines day-to-day anecdotes, personal interactions and socio-political prose with amazing dexterity. The background information provided for each lonely country visited by Pico is pretty amazing.
I have traveled to some of these lonely places and can almost relive my travel experiences after reading his book (though he traveled almost a decade before I did). With every passing chapter, I could observe a progressive improvement in Pico's writing style. Essays from Argentina, Paraguay and Bhutan are very interesting. He comes into his own with the concluding essay on Australia.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for an intrepid traveller. .......2005-05-12

Pico Iyer has a keen eye and great facility with words, and therefore his books always make for great reading. "Falling off the map," is a book that describes at lenght about some lonely places in the world. He has an uncanny knack of painting a vivid portrait that instally transports you to these places.

Iyer defines lonley places as those places that are not the topic of conversation at any international dinner tables. These places are "shy, defensive, curious places: places that do not know how they are supposed to behave." And Iyer convices us in that in this ever-shrinking world such placs still exist: Cuba, Iceland, Bhutan, Vietnam and others.

The minute I finished reading the book, I wanted to go these lonely and interesting places that Iyer talks about in this book. But, that was just a passing thought, and then harsh reality intruded and I started to fret about creature comforts, food, transportion etc.Visiting these places is not for the faint-hearted with weak stomachs.

If you can brave these places like Iyer did, you are a lucky person, but if you are like the masses that like to sit in the comfort of a lazybody of the living room and indulge in arm-chair travelling then this is a must-read book. That is precisely what I did. I derived great vicarious pleasure by reading this book.

But, alas Iyer made his expedition to these lonely places over a decade ago, and since then things have changed in some of these lonely places, and they are fast becoming the new destination for regular travellers. There is some hope for me in this changing travelling trend ...perhaps, I can get to visit these places in my lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars A Non-Guide to Non-Tourist Attractions.......2005-05-07

I have to admit I'm a sucker for all travel narratives. I have a serious travel jones myself, and since I'm not in a position to jet all over the world right now, I have to armchair travel. Pico Iyer was recommended highly to me by a fellow armchair traveler so I set about this book with some high expectations.

The downside of this book is that he's writing about a number of places I'm likely not to visit-North Korea, Cuba, Paraguay-but after a few chapters my disappointment at reading about "lonely places" that will remain unvisited by me gradually fell away as Iyer's style became more comfortable for me.

He refers to classic travel writers frequently, and if you haven't read these authors, some of the references lose their impact, but Iyer's observations are so detailed, so full of atmosphere, that you don't necessarily get a picture of the country he's visiting, but a total feeling that's larger than the individual portraits he presents. I get the feeling he genuinely loves the people and the places he's visited and doesn't see them as part of some journalistic assignment he has to get through.

4 out of 5 stars home is where everything is the same and yet different.......2002-05-13

Pico Iyer's prose caught my eye in his Time Magazine columns where he did a good job showing us how recognizable the exotic has become. This collection, his first in book form, again reiterates that the most difficult aspect of long distance travel is not any longer how to get there, how to dodge danger or how to find your way back but how to avoid to bump into the same features you left 10,000 miles and 6 timezones earlier. Showing through many examples, sometimes hilarious and sometimes profoundly sad how globalisation regurgitates the same marketing ideas dressed in different flags it really makes its point that the era of the curious gentleman(woman) traveler looking for exotic shores has been overtaken by the vastly less romantic quest to escape the onslaught of canned icons in any neck of the woods.
The book also does a nice job of illuminating the paradoxical quest of the overfed and understimulated prestigious first world traveler trying to find hidden corners where there is still some sort of exploration possible and where not all laws of our structured civilization apply only to be greeted by the not so happy natives who are dying to know how to join the West or in the least purchase its most potent logos.

1 out of 5 stars Has Iyer Ever Really Left His Desk?.......2002-04-11

This guy either makes up things as he goes along or doesn't actually go along! For instance, he said garden fences and TV antenna are banned in Canberra Australia, which is nonsense. In fact, fences are erected at the time houses are built, so everyone has them, and most roofs also sport TV antennas. Plus, he describes Australian houses as "semi-detached," when they are almost all just like your average suburban American house. Not major points, but he certainly lost all credibility with me. In fact, I seriously doubt that he's actually been here. Read Bill Bryson's book if you want to learn about Australia.

    Book Description

On John Franklin's 1820 expedition to find the North-West Passage, Michel Teroahaute cannibalized two team members and was preparing a third when he was caught and killed. When Rene la Salle set off for the Mississippi Delta in 1684, he missed the target by five hundred miles, but on landing immediately built a prison for those who fell asleep on watch. Consummate storyteller Fergus Fleming brings together these and forty-three other gripping stories in Off the Map.

Spanning three ages of exploration, it is a uniquely accessible and supremely entertaining history of adventure and endeavor. Off the Map recounts episodes both classic and forgotten: the "classics" are brought to life in more vivid colors than ever before; the lesser-known stories offer accounts of feats that are no less heroic or extraordinary but have long lain hidden in the undergrowth of history. From the Renaissance golden age of Columbus, da Gama, and Magellan to the twentieth-century heroics of polar explorers such as Peary, Scott, and Amundsen, this is an unforgettable journey into the annals of adventure.

    1 out of 5 stars I'm returning this one.......2007-09-18

Everyone hates negative reviews, but if you give a negative review a negative rating -- and there's more than one disappointed reader here -- don't say no one warned you. Fleming is a guy who has figured out that anyone can write books; for a discussion of this "democratizing" phenomenon, see Andrew Keen's just-published "Cult of the Amateur." What Fleming has NOT figured out is that there was no money available for pure science -- let alone "the spirit of pure adventure" he so relishes -- in the 16th century, period. Expeditions HAD to be profitable. He beats the dead horse of Greed without once stopping to ask himself, "Is there something I don't know about the world of my ancestors?"

The first five stories were dull recapitulations of journeys I happen to know something about, in which he repeats myths that were disproved long ago. What lay ahead of me were stories about adventurers I did NOT know much about, and I wasn't in the mood for poorly written fiction. I was actually in the rarest of moods -- to go through all the trouble and expense of returning a book I only paid $12 for!

1 out of 5 stars Author Discloses Agenda.......2007-09-15

The author's selection of great travel/exploration/endurance stories is disappointing. Why leave out Raleigh, Lief Eriksson (or any of the Norsemen for that matter), or many others. The author is sloppy with his narration, and discloses a penchant for left-wing viewpoints. But the biggest disappointment is the repetitive nature of the accounts. There are so many arctic/antarcitic exploration narratives, they all blur together. One can't even distinguish the truly important ones from the completely insignificant ones in the memory after finishing the book. A more judicious choice of inclusion would have made the book more worthwhile. And not leaving out profoundly important discovery stories at the expense of including completely obscure and idiosyncratic stories. Doing the latter is okay if you're doing a book on obscure travel stories, but it is too much to include them all with major discoveries. All in all, the author is indulging himself at the expense of the reader.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the history buff.......2007-01-07

For a blend of history and true-life stories of survival and adventure, try the classics told in OFF THE MAP: TALES OF ENDURANCE AND EXPLORATION. Fergus Fleming is a narrative historian with many books to his name: OFF THE MAP uses high drama, a touch of humor, and lively themes to bring to life the journeys and sometimes the harrowing experiences of explorers from early to modern times. Perfect for the history buff who enjoys the action and high drama of true-life drama paired with the insights of historical fact and biography.

5 out of 5 stars The best book about world explorers that you can find........2006-10-16

Off the Map is a wonderfll book. It is basically a summary of world exploration from Marco Polo in 1271 to Umberto Nobile in 1928. There are separate chapters about each explorer, all arranged in chronological order with each chapter about 10-20 pages each. The chapter lengths are just right in that they are not too long, but also not lacking for detailed information. Each chapter also has a map that illustrates where the particular explorer travelled, which was extremely helpful. There are also 3 separate sections of illustrations and photos which helps give a visual picture of the explorers.
Overall, this book is packed with information and is written in such a way that each chapter is told like a story and each story takes you back in time to a different era. If you are intertested in world exploration or world history, then this book is a must read. I enjoyed it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Endurance, Courage, Forbearance and Stupidity.......2006-09-19

As any newspaper or magazine editor will tell you, people love to read about other peoples travails. There are 45 stories in all in this book, separated into three sections: Reconnaisance, Inquiry and Endeavor. Originally people travels to find out what was going on with their neighbors, these are reconnaisance. Later they travelled for knowledge, such as how to get to such and such a place in the fastest way possible. Lastly were people who went to inaccessible places because they were there.

For me the most fun was reconnaisance and the early travellers. These people mostly went out of curiousity. They went to find out what was on the other side of the mountain or on the other side of the lake. They went mostly out of sheer human need to see what they could see, and if they actually would fall off the end of the earth, or if there really were people with heads in the middle of their stomachs.

The inquirers went for plunder and glory. They were looking for gold and people they could exploit. They did this very well and in the end usually ended up either enslaving those natives they found, exploiting them; and in many cases decimating them and their cultures with a mixture of religion and disease. They did no one any lasting good.

The last group are those looking for the north and south poles and endeavoring to climb the alps and Mr.Everest; or too fill in the blank spaces in Africa. To a man they seemed to do it for the glory; and those who did it for King and Country were even dumber than those who did it for glory. More than half of those listing in this section ending up dying because of poor planning, disease or just plain stupidity. Most of them are a comment on the vanity of man.

Flemings style is very straight forward, and as he states these are narrative tales and not stories. I leave to you to decide on the difference.

    Book Description

Explore: Stories of Survival from Off the Map offers first-hand accounts by the world's boldest explorers, who have encountered storms, starvation, canibals, predators, and disease in their pursuit of mystery and adventure. Nunez Cabeza de Vaca writes of his 16th century expedition to the region north of the Gulf of Mexico, an amazing tale of survival and hardship that begins with the loss of de Vaca's ships and the capture and enslavement of his party by Indians. Argentinian novelist Abel Posse gives us an unforgettable Christopher Columbus facing down mutiny and the threat of starvation Tim Flannery almost dies while searching for Fulmer's Fruit Bat, thought to have become extinct 12,000 years ago. Thor Heyderdahl recounts his earliest adventure in Polynesia. Premier mountaineering and adventure writer David Roberts searches for a legendary lost city high in the cliffs of New Mexico. Following an ancient trail, Roberts discovers a beautifully preserved Anasazi city — and a curse. Explore also includes writing by Lawrence Millman, Gene Savay, John Long, Redmond O'Hanlon, Fanny Bullock Workman and William Hunter Workman, Andrea Barrett, and W.H. Murray.

    4 out of 5 stars A strong addition to a terrific series.......2000-10-07

EXPLORE adds 18 well-selected tales of adventure to the Adrenaline series. They blend of humor, like Tim Cahill's Peruvian expedition with two eccentric companions; dangerous adventure, including A.N. de Vaca's exploration of America in the early 1500's; and more scholarly accounts, such as David Roberts' search for lost cliff dwellings in New Mexico. The best feature of this book, and the series as a whole, is that it exposes us to writings that we would otherwise never see. Ms Schwamm has cast her net widely and hauled in four centuries of engaging exploration stories. Some are excerpted from works out of print, but the bibliography makes it possible to track these books down if you must hear the rest of the story. So why only four stars? As a collector of the entire series, I find this volume less spine-tingling than the rest, with fewer stories of death-defying danger, which is okay - not all exploration involves a struggle to survive if you go about it properly. If you like National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, this is a book for you.

    Book Description

A punk rock vision quest told in the tradition of the anarchist travel story, Off The Map is narrated by two young women as they discard their maps, fears, and anything resembling a plan, and set off to Europe. Wandering across that continent, the dozens of vignettes are the details of the whole - a squatted castle surrounded by tourists on the Spanish coast, a philosophizing businessman on the highways of France, a placa full of los crustos in Barcelona...Originating as a zine given out to a few friends in Prague, this has now received the Crimethinc lavish production treatment, and clocks in at 146 pages, complete with photographs, illustrations and a cover featuring original artwork by Nikki McClure. 5 out of 5 stars great travel book.......2007-01-02

I found the authors writing to be very descriptive and illuminating. Her descriptions of the places they traveled were very open and amusing.

    5 out of 5 stars breathtaking........2006-06-17

This is a beautiful book. The prose is fluid, and transports you to another world, while the art [though sparse] compliments the pages.
If you're discouraged in your daily life, I highly reccomend this book. It really pulled me out of a rough spot. And, to the other reviewer, wo disagreed with the fact that the book was a zine, in circulation of 20,000, this is common in europe. I spent two months there, and while staying with friends, i recieved an art numbered 104,020/??????.

    Remember, anything is possible.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking..........2006-05-10

I found this book at a used book shop and was curious enough by the title and the opening sentences to buy it. I'm so glad I did.

I'm not sure if the author is writing under a pseudonym, but if so, I hope she one day reveals her true name, as I would love to read anything else she writes. She has a beautiful grasp of the language, a very strong, unique voice that lingers in the reader's mind long after the last page is turned. I've done my share of backpacking (mostly solo, occasionally with a friend) and sometimes find myself frustrated with the self-absorbed, pointless travel literature penned by some of my colleagues on the road. This, however, is a stunning first (?) effort.

There are few blow-by-blow, word-for-word, moment-by-moment descriptions of events and adventures -- she doesn't dwell on the minutiae of backpacking; rather, the writer often expands her field of vision to embrace not just the many practical aspects of traveling but also the nature of friendship, love, longing, loneliness, beauty, and humanity, and does so in a way that's not self-conscious, self-serving, or cynical. She admits that she can't be cynical, and indeed, the book exudes hope, a feeling not often associated with the anarchist movement. It's an optimistic tale of two girls in search of more than adventure, something that already distinguishes it from the hundreds of traveler's tales on the bookshelf.

I wish there were a sequel, or at least something to let us know what happens to these extraordinary women once they reached their destination. There's no information on the Crimethinc Web site (the publisher) about the author, nothing to indicate whether or not they found their way home, or if they decided to seek their dreams elsewhere.

If you do decide to purchase this book, I would recommend going straight to the publisher (Google Crimethinc). It's much cheaper than going through Amazon, even with S&H thrown in.

    2 out of 5 stars doesn't make any sense.......2006-04-10

yo, i don't believe this book for a SECOND. this is NOT to say that i don't believe that two rad girls can travel around europe on the cheap, staying in squats and having adventures. hell--i know tons of girls, both crusty and non, who've done that and more.
what i don't believe AT ALL is the introduction. it claims that this was a zine in its original form, and once its circulation exceeded 20,000 it was turned into a book. HELLO!!?! i have been involved with zines for over ten years at this point, and i've never heard of a xeroxed zine that has a circulation that high. i believe they said that each and every copy was scammed. do you have any idea how hard it is to scam even a thousand copies of a zine, let alone the absolutely ludicrous number of TWENTY THOUSAND!?! do you realize how much it costs to mail those out? and of course these girls are typical crimethinc girls. white, ablebodied, don't ever seem to work. constantly chuckling to themselves about how easy it is to "live off the system" without ever acknowledging that the system is tailor-made to benefit THEM.
and the writing! is not consistent at all with any sort of zine writing. it reads like third-rate speculative fiction. a lot of the dialogue seemed really trite and/or implausible.
i gave this two stars because it was mildly entertaining. i couldn't stop reading it, even though i groaned at nearly every page.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and poetic.......2005-05-08

This is an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful book. Though I was initially impressed by this narrative in its original zine form, this bound book floored me. It's magnificent as a mere piece of traveler literature, engaging as a dual-narrative, and absolutely amazing as piece of poetry. A must read for everyone! But it'd be better to purchase it directly from the folks of CrimethInc. @ www.crimethinc.com

    Book Description

Anyone who's ever ventured into the subway system of Tokyo knows it's like being lost in a maze. The overwhelming sense of hopelessness-which direction to go, which lines to take, where to buy the tickets, etc.-can thoroughly annoy and throw one off, especially someone who can't speak or read Japanese.
Help is at hand with the publication of this tremendous little guidebook. It is a wonderful booster for those who need to make sense of the confusing and multifaceted Tokyo subway system.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely Not as Good a TOKYO CITY ATLAS.......2006-05-14

See my review for TOKYO CITY ATLAS. It is much better than this albeit newer guide. The signage in Tokyo is still a mix of the "old" and the "new" system and TCA has better station area maps.

3 out of 5 stars Using the Tokyo Subways.......2005-08-18

This new (2005) book from Tuttle is not to be confused with the same author's "Tokyo Subway Guide" (2002) published by Kodansha. In one aspect, the newer book has the advantage of including the newly designated codes for each subway stop (a letter and number combination that uniquely identifies each station on each line). However, the older volume is more useful to this reader than the newer one because it includes area maps of 50 major stations, each showing interconnections between lines, numbered exists, and major buildings. The `area profiles' in the newer volume are limited to 13 in number (thus omitting Ikebukuro, Jimbocho, Shimbashi, Ueno, and others). While each area profile includes some text describing noted features in the areas of interest, they are far less detailed than the older maps. Of the newer volume's 160 pages, 100 are given over to category listings (`acupuncture clinics' to `zoo') that could allow the newer volume to double as a guidebook, though the listings are not annotated and, thus, will have utility primarily to those already familiar with the city and who know what sights, stores, or services they are seeking.

In his book Kicking Habits: Welcome Relief for Addicted churches, Thomas Bandy provided the "big picture" of the five stages of congregational renewal and transformation. Similarly, in Growing Spiritual Redwoods, Bandy and Bill Easum provided new metaphors for change to help congregations break out of outmoded attitudes and assumptions, and described the nature of spiritual leadership necessary to grow spiritual giants that would change the face of the cultural forest. The purpose of Moving Off the Map: A Field Guide to Changing the Congregation is to answer these questions. Here are powerful processes and tools to help congregations identify their strengths, weaknesses, and addictions. These processes can help a congregation shift attitudes, deepen spiritual awareness, received Biblical visions, and shape ministries for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent process for Biblical visioning.......2006-06-25

I have never thought very highly about strategic planning for a church. God has uniquely gifted Tom to communicate the ways that God gives visions to His people. Tom communicated these truths in his book.

4 out of 5 stars Practical ideas and helps for congregational leaders.......1999-09-02

Bandy's book offers readers a step-by-step process by which they can engage in making change in the local congregation. It offers limited exercies for use but does have some examples that can be easily followed by local leaders. I recommend the book as a tool to use for giving direction to the local leaders wanting to understand change and ways to engage in changing the local congregation.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Ever Read .......2007-03-20

The title says it all. This book is filled with intriguing stories filled with symbolism and philosophy. Also a great book to read if you like biking or want to learn some history about Russia and the Soviet Union.

4 out of 5 stars I've borrowed this one from the library a dozen times........2003-12-19

This is an excellent book. It offers a brief peek into the vast Russian hinterland that plodded along under the Soviet shroud. Russia is not Moscow. It's written sometime in the late 80's, not long before the USSR collapsed, and shows us people who's main priority is survival, not Communism. Jenkins writes in a rambling style that paints a vivid picture. Having gone to Russia since reading it for the first time, I can say the picture is very accurate.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring adventure story.......2000-07-07

Jenkins does an excellent job of conveying the feelings he experienced during this trip. Sometimes spirits were low and sometimes they were high. His writing captures the reality of the trip and reveals the spirit of the Russian people with great emotion. I disagree with the review above that states Jenkins hated Siberia. He clearly had a great appreciation for the people he met there and valued his experience. It was obvious that he had a problem with Communism, and hence did not understand the Soviets. This is a book about people. Who cares whether they were the first group to ride across the country? The objective of the book was to describe a journey, and that has been done very well.

3 out of 5 stars A record not made in a country not liked.......2000-03-28

Mark Jenkins clearly did not like Russia and the system. I agree on his view of the old system, but my thoughts were again and again: What does he do there. He don't like it at all. In spite of all the trouble of Mark Jenkins, the fact is that a Russian biker crossed Russia one sea to another in 1967, 22 years before Jenkins. The first do cross all of Russia was a Dane, me, who did it in 1997 from Magadan to Kaleningrad (more to the East and more to the West than Jenkins route). The brother of Fjordor Koinikov (who followed Jenkins), Nikolai, tried to do it before me. He failed because of cold. I succeed because I loved Siberia. Jenkins hated it.

1 out of 5 stars I Did not find this book entertaining at all........1999-10-05

Seems like the author is trying to pretend to be this geat hero riding his iron stallion across the frozen reaches of Siberia.

I found him to be a true bore. Out running and out smarting Soviet KGB agents on a bicycle? Oh please!

If you want to read a true adventure, read Miles From Nowhere by the late Barbara Savage.
