Book Description

Learn the concepts on the new CCNA 640-801 and ICND 640-811 exams with the only Cisco authorized self-study guide

With the introduction in June 2003 of the CCNA 640-801 and ICND 640-811 exams, Cisco Systems also introduced the newest version of the Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) course. CCNA Self-Study: Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND), Second Edition is a Cisco authorized self-paced learning tool that helps CCNA candidates prepare for the new CCNA exams.

This book is the second edition of the best-selling title for early-stage CCNA preparation. It is designed in exclusive cooperation with Cisco Systems, and it is the only title authorized by Cisco for self-study learning of the ICND course concepts. Coverage includes a review of the OSI model, routers and switches, Cisco IOS software, command line interface, WAN, and ISDN and Frame Relay.

The CCNA program certifies that a professional can install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks (100 nodes or fewer). It is considered one of the most valuable IT certifications and has been growing in popularity over the last several years.

5 out of 5 stars Review - ICND.......2007-05-15

very practical book for anyone who wants to study cisco product and LAN technology.

4 out of 5 stars Gets the job done, but be ready to work............2006-01-04

The new split approach to the CCNA coursework, with the INTRO and ICND books, have provided better organization and a modular breakdown to the information. As a recertification candidate who just completed my exams, I can say that these books are a definite improvement over earlier versions such as 640-607. Odom (or other technical editors) have taken the time to present the information in a building block manner that is comprehensible. I won't repeat the longer descriptions of content that are already present in these reviews.

Two points worth noting:
1. Errata: Always exist with technical books (don't know why the editors can't check them thoroughly before going to print). Some mistakes are indeed frustrating and trivial, which undermine the learning process for future CCNA candidates learning this material for the first time, who do not have the experience to distinguish the wheat from the chaff. Be sure to go to the Cisco Press website to get latest updates for errata (which are still incomplete) as well as corrected/updated test engine modules. Some of the problems people have reported, especially with bad exam questions, are due to failure to update.
2. Whether or not candidates have tested before, all should be aware that Cisco, in an effort to foil "paper tigers", has stepped up the exam effort to represent real world problems. Without violating the non-disclosure agreement, I simply encourage exam candidates to go beyond using practice tests (Cisco or otherwise) with multiple choice questions. These are not enough to develop your analysis skills, and in the real world as well as on the exams, those are what count. If you can't work on a network for exam preparation, then use the sims and labs, and test yourself with the detailed word problem questions at the end of the chapters, not just the "Do I Already Know This?" questions at the beginning. The reviewer who claims in this column that these books are boring and of no use neither understands the nature of certification nor Cisco's intent. These books will prepare the candidate sufficiently if used to their fullest extent. Because Cisco advertises that test versions vary, for obvious security reasons regarding the protection of test content, there is no way to avoid a certain amount of exam overpreparation. But then, we are supposed to be preparing for real-world, are we not?

One final note: My preference in future printings would be to have Odom drop some of the personal humor. Just my subjective observation, but to me, it detracts from the content.

1 out of 5 stars No WAY! This is not even close to the CCNA exam.......2005-06-23

The CCNA exam has very hard VLSM, EIGRP and OSFP questions, that are not even covered close to the depth needed to pass the ccna exam.

not to mention how hard the NAT questions are...

This book is hard to read, boring, and error filled.

4 out of 5 stars Covers what you need to pass..........2004-12-20

Great book for exam preparation.
The only drawback I found was in the VLAN Chapter.
The vlan configuration does not correspond to a 2950 switch.
The configuration will work on a 3500 switch, but the exam will
test your knowledge of a 2950.
Also there is no errata at ciscopress.com

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!.......2004-04-07

After reading the Second Edition I can honestly say that it will prepare you for the ICND test. I think the first edition was written for a different test and even though the information is there you have to really dig to get to it(sorry Mr Odom). It is well illustrated and the IOS screens are very clear and easy to read.

Here's a book that clearly and concisely explains the low-level internetworking concepts that make the Internet go. If you read Internetworking Cisco Network Devices and come to understand its subject matter, you'll be well prepared to pass the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) exam (640-507) and do a bang-up job at most any networking job you choose to pursue. This book explains Internet-standard data communications protocols (the TCP/IP suite and routing algorithms particularly) in terms of their implementations on Cisco routers, switches, and software systems. By doing so, it prepares you to install, configure, manage, and troubleshoot Cisco equipment.

If you're starting from near zero on the networking knowledge scale (and even if you're not), you'll likely want to read this book from beginning to end. The authors lay down a conceptual foundation (including excellent coverage of the Open Systems Interconnection reference model) in early chapters, and subsequently proceed to place Cisco-specific knowledge on top of that base. The text frequently seems dry, but it's clear that the authors and editors went to considerable trouble to get their facts right and drive home the big concepts with illustrations. Test-preparation aids are limited to a dozen or so review questions (with brief, minimally annotated answers at the back of the book), so it's clear that this book is about knowing the material, not preparing for an artificial test. It does readers a service. --David Wall

Topics covered: The contents of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) exam (640-507), which verifies knowledge of interconnections among networks as implemented with Cisco equipment running Internet-standard protocols. Coverage spans selection of hardware from the Cisco line, cabling, configuring Internetwork Operating System (IOS), setting up switched networks with Catalyst 1900 switches, and establishing virtual local area networks (VLANs). Plenty of coverage goes to TCP/IP under Cisco gear, including routing protocols, the configuration of routes, and point-to-point communication over wide area network (WAN) links of various kinds.

Book Description

Cisco authorized self-study book for CCNA foundation learning

Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices is a Cisco authorized self-paced learning tool for CCNA foundation learning. This book provides you with the knowledge needed to identify and recommend the best Cisco solutions for small- to medium-sized businesses. This book teaches you how to perform all the basic configuration procedures to build a multirouter, multigroup internetwork that uses LAN and WAN interfaces for the most commonly used routing and routed protocols.

This book provides the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting information required to install and configure Cisco products. You will learn the fundamentals of interconnecting Cisco network devices in five modules: getting started with Cisco networks (assembling, cabling, operating, configuring, and managing devices), interconnecting Catalyst(r) switches (fundamental switch operations and VLAN configuration), interconnecting Cisco routers (TCP/IP, IP routing, traffic management, and IPX configuration), extending the network to WANs (serial point-to-point connections, ISDN BRI, and Frame Relay PVC connections), and supplemental appendixes (AppleTalk(r), HyperTerminal, Cisco 700 series routers, and password recovery techniques). Each chapter concludes with questions to help assess your understanding of key concepts and start you down the path for attaining your CCNA certification.

Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.

4 out of 5 stars EXACT SAME book as ICND for 640-507.......2003-02-04

The book didn't change, except for the cover. I compared the 640-507 book with the new one for 640-607 and the info is, page-for-page, exactly the same. You can turn to page XX in one book and the exact same info is on page XX of the other book. See, the ICND material didn't change. The only thing that Cisco changed was the format of the test (640-607 has the material weighted differently; Cisco.com might explain this better) and (I think) the passing score is higher. So, if you want to study for the new test, use the same ICND book, but the NEW Cisco Press study guide for 607 instead of the old 507 guide.

3 out of 5 stars Careful if you think this is the v3.0 exam book..........2002-12-25

There is a new version of this book being advertised by Cisco Press under the same ISBN number for exam 640-607... this is *not* it!!! Still useful, but it's plain as day on the cover, this book is for 640-507, not the new exam.

What do you use for 640-607? Dunno since Cisco Press is giving the wrong ISBN... tell the world when you find out :)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty basic book on Cisco........2002-12-08

The information contained in this book is fairly basic for anyone but a complete beginner. There is no coverage of IP routing protocols. If you want to take it a step (or two) further, check out "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book will get you up to speed with dynamic IP routing and should give at least the CCNP level information on Cisco routing.

2 out of 5 stars tedious.......2002-03-26

Take a decent user manual, remove 3 scoops of details, add 1 scoop of errors, 2 scoops of ambiguities, and puff to 5 times its volume with repetitions, disorganization, and verbosity, and you've got this turkey.

See _The Switch Book_ by Rich Seifert if you want to know how switches work. See _Upgrading and Repairing Networks_ by Terry Ogletree for a good general primer.

5 out of 5 stars Ready to tackle the CCNA!.......2002-08-28

I just finished reading this book cover to cover and feel very confident about moving on to the next stage of my CCNA preparation, practice tests and simulation! I've been using the CCExam software from CCStudy.com as well as a few other practice tests and am amazed how easy a lot of the questions were after reading this book. Just an indication of how comprehensive this book is.

More important, in my opinion, is the book's "readability"! I'm sure there are numerous books that cover the exact same information as this book yet might not be written in a manner that is clear and simple to understand, especially for Cisco newbies like myself. This book is just a lot of fun to read.

Finally, I really enjoyed the "real world" tone of this title. It isn't written for someone who's bound for the testing center, but rather for someone who needs to apply the knowledge at work in the field. I'm certain that I'll constantly be using this book as a reference even after passing the exam. Very cool.

All in all, I'd like to recommend ICND to the Cisco neophyte who's looking for that great "First Book" to start off his or her Cisco library. I'm really glad I got this book and I'm sure you will be too.

Good luck on your CCNA!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book...............2002-07-06

I read ICND by Cisco Press before. I found this book used on Amazon and bought it just because it was cheap. Now I can not put it down. This book is far better than Cisco Press' ICND. It has about 100 more pages than Cisco's. To me it is worth every minute spent to read this book.
I passed CCNA in December. So, I don't have the exam pressure. I am reading this just for fun and enjoying it.
I strongly recommend it over Cisco's ICND if you intent to take CCNA test.

I strongely recommend this book for everyone who want to pass the CCNA2.0 with FULLY understanding.

    Book Description

This book describes the transformation of telecommunications from national network monopolies to a new system, the network of networks, and the glue that holds it together, interconnection. By their very nature, monopoly-owned networks provided a small number of standardized, nationwide services. Over the past two decades, however, new forces in the world economy began to unravel this traditional system. The driving force behind the change was the shift toward an information-based economy. Especially for large organizations, the price, control, security, and reliability of telecommunications became variables requiring organized attention. Thus, monopoly began to give way to the "network of networks," the foundation of today's telecommunications and Internet infrastructure.

Taking a broad, multidisciplinary perspective Eli Noam discusses the importance and history of interconnection policy, as well as recent policy reforms both within the United States and around the globe. Other important topics he discusses include interconnection prices, the unbundling of interconnection, and the technology of interconnection. He concludes with an examination of social and policy issues, including the free flow of content, universal service and privacy protection, and the future of telecommunications.

              Book Description

Foundation learning for the CCNA and CCENT ICND1 course and exam from Cisco, from the only authorized publisher, Cisco Press

Introduction to Cisco Networking Devices, Part 1, Second Edition is based on the content of the new 3.0 ICND1 course (previously known as INTRO) that was released in July 2007. This book is substantially different from the current edition INTRO 1.0 book that is currently on the market. The book covers the foundation topics of networking and provides an introduction to Cisco IOS and Cisco devices so that students will be able to understand the principals behind networking fundamentals and device configuration. The book will also contain materials that were moved from ICND2, version 2.0. The major topics include the fundamentals of networking, how networking devices work, IP addressing, connecting to the Internet, wireless networking, networking applications, the fundamentals of routing, connecting to a WAN and securing the network. The book wraps up with a case study describing everything discussed throughout the book.

This book is aligned to the CCENT exam topics, and it is an excellent foundational resourse for not only that exam, but also for general introductory network technology learning.

What is new in this edition?
              New topical coverage includes

              Security

              Wireless

              Network address translation (NAT)

              Troubleshooting of various topics
