Maxwell has done it again, but in a new way! Maxwell has written some of the classics on leadership and living, and he takes a fresh and basic look at life in this book. While he still uses his principle driven style of instruction, he strips away a layer and lets us into his life. In "Today Matters" Maxwell gives us insight into his "daily dozen." These are his twelve decisions made throughout his life for various reasons and the practices he associates with them. Phenomenal place to start for anyone looking to bring more discipline to their life or ministry. I consider myself an advanced "daily practice" guy and I found this book exciting and invigorating. This book will change your life-Best book on leadership........2007-01-23
This is by far the best book on leadership. It covers everything that one needs to know on leadership. Most book, as they cover leadership, talks about the attitude, action and discipline but John Maxwell has taken leadership to a greater level by incdluding health. As a nutritionist and working in a hospital, I see that most people forsake their health to succeed and then I watch them having to slow down to catch up to life and find life real priorities which is first our relationship with ourselves and with others. People forget, without you there is no leader, so if you forsake your health to succeed you will die not accomplishing what you intended to accomplish. LIke most leaders Maxwell learned the hard way, he had a heart attack that almost killed him. The book covers everything one needs to know, impacting your world everyday and not putting it off for later. Today Matters. What we do today impacts what we do tomorrow. This book was so good that I gave a seminar of leadership based on this book and got a standing ovation. Everyone wanted to talk to me. I encourage everyone to get this book and do the exercise at the end of each chapter.

Quick and Practical.......2006-05-06
This is the second book that I have read by John C. Maxwell, and boy am I glad I did. I am currently on my second reading of this book.
This book is the kind of book that you can review every so often to just make sure you are still on track, and firm up some decisions you may have made, but are letting slack.
I chose to read this book a chapter per day. This means that it actually takes two weeks to read if you don't skip a day, though it can be read MUCH faster. I just read it the first time through and didn't do any of the practical exercises that follow each chapter. I don't recommend you do it this way.
If I had to do it all over again, which I am doing, I would do the practical exercises as I came to them. I think you will get the most benefit by putting things into action. Start moving on them right away, and you will begin to see a change.
This book is very readable, it isn't dense at all. The material though simplistic, which is a good thing, can bring about deep changes if you apply it.
If you have read other books of the self-help, motivational type you might read an example or two that you have read elsewhere. This wasn't a problem for me, and all of the examples are very appropriate for the material presented.
I liked this book so much that I bought a copy for my Mother. I hope that she reads it and passes it on to the rest of the family. This seems like a book that would be good to read as a family, and would benefit from discussion. The sooner you get your children reading this book, the better. If they buy into it while they are young, look out world!

I recently attended a function that John Maxwell happened to be speaking at. He is a very engaging and insightful presenter. I had to pick up a copy of one of his books to hear more about what this guy had to say.
This is a well written and easy read. Anyone that reads this will come away with something. The book is well structured and I think it should be required reading for college students.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by all of the life's pressures, this book will aid in prioritizing. John Maxwell lays out some very useful techniques for managing the clutter in your life. More importantly, this book suggests that "the things you do today, will be realized tomorrow." Just buy it.

A friend loaned me this book by John Maxwell and after the first chapter, I put it down to go buy my own copy! I knew I needed to highlight the great, practical advice on how to live a balanced life that makes a difference. Leaders often forget to "feed themselves" and this book is definitely great food for thought! Maxwell's Daily Dozen will help you get a handle on your day to day living and in the process help you become a more effective and efficient leader. I have used his tenents in several motivational speeches in the last few months and in fact, used his book as a "speakers" gift at a recent conference. I highly recommend this book and the "plan for improvement" included in the last chapter!

John Maxwell wrote a power packed book on Why today matters and how to live better today so that tomorrow will be better than yesterday. Any person who is looking to grow in any area of life will be challenged, inspired and motivated to make some today changes. At the end of each chapter John gives clear guidance on how to implement what was written. The ending is awesome. I found this product extremely disappointing and not worth my time or money for several reasons: 1) the audio is condescending and difficult to avoid, why not just let me read it if that is my preference? 2) you can't print out the tutorial pages so you have to go back and forth to refer to them again, which can sometimes be several screens back, 3) you cannot enlarge the screen image to fit your computer screen or move it to the side if you want to open another program to get information to fill out the Orman requirements. Being able to enlarge the screen would be a great benefit for me as I have poor eyesight-- which is the very reason I bought a 20" screen, 4) Suze Orman is on every screen. She's attractive but is spending too much time promoting herself over developing a good product, 5) you can not change the typeface from Courier (Times Roman would be nice) or change the page margins. The final document looks like it was produced in the 1920s. 6) when you print out the draft documents there are inexplicable holes in some of the paragraphs. They are aware of this problem (once they finally answered my email inquiry) but don't seem to think it is important to fix before releasing the product for sale. Why should I have to get to the end of the program before finding this out? 7) you can't continue to the next screen without hitting the "continue" button. Give me a break and let me press my return button instead of having to move my cursor around. The whole program seems to be a protoype to test on us unsuspecting customers.
It messed up my printer.......2006-07-26
The CD looks okay, and then when you go print the documents it completely messes up my printer, to the point that I wasted an entire new package of paper and still cannot print anything on my printer.

Dear Amazon Customers: Are you surprised that I myself have given my own product a one star rating? Dont be for you know I am always honest with you. Please be aware that at the time when this product was created (which was years ago now) that at that time it was great! It was the best the technology could offer at a price that everyone could afford. However since that time I have totally been able to 1000% improve it with the latest version which is under the title Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit. I do not want you to waste your hard earned money on this version when for the same amount of money you can have the latest and the greatest. The new Will and Trust Kit answers all the criticisms in the reviews on this page and even more that needed to be addressed. This old version is browser based so you cannot save your information for security reasons, the new version on the WILL and TRUST KIT is on a CD ROM that can be downloaded onto your computer. This allows you to then give the disc to a friend or family member for them to download etc. So one kit can serve the entire family. The Will and Trust Kit not only has the CD ROM but it also has ten electronic books on the CD itself along with automatic updates of all the forms, so when changes happen you can for free get what you need to know. The new kit allows you to simply answer questions and it picks the forms you most likely should have and then fills in the information from your answers directly into those forms. The old version does not do any of this. The Will and Trust kit has the trust lawyer Janet Dobrovolny ( my trust lawyer who created this kit) verbally taking you through your forms via the audio format and you also can print out the directions and or read and listen to them on screen. There are over 50 forms on the new version, over 90 weblinks and 15 calculators. Please note: You DO NEED internet access to make the most of the updating process of the new Will and Trust Kit. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is I want you to get the most for your money and this old version of the Protection Portfolio, the page you are currently on, will not give you that but Suze Ormans Will and Trust Kit will. I would love if Amazon took this old version off all together and we have asked and asked them to do so, but that is not how they work so what to do, but now you know what I think. Good book, Poor Software.......2004-11-23
While the information in the book was informative, I'm surprised at the poor quality of the software used to generate forms. The software does not allow you to electronically save (And modify) the forms - you must print them immediately. Information does not transfer from one form to the next, you must retype information endlessly. Was most surprised that someone of her prominence wouldn't seek out a better software vendor.

Business Imperative/Business Critical.......2007-07-12
If you are interested in the critical issues facing Human Resources today and business leadership in general, this text is a must. This book is for the HR practitioner and corporate leaders. The strategic business partner role is the future of Human Resources as the tactical and transactional basics of HR are either being exported outside of HR departments or outsourced. The HR role today is business focused, business critical and business imperative. All the critical isses facing HR are discussed in this anthology - from the strategic national issues, regional issues and globalization. I highly recommend. I also recommend the first addition of this series "Tomorrow's HR Management: 48 Thought Leaders Call For Change." Thanks Amazon for bringing both books to my attention.

Practice lags behind theory as usual.......2007-06-01
The first section of this book was interesting, but it was not an example of what was to come. Many of the practitioner/authors made it clear that actual practice lags behind the available body of knowledge. The usual development of jargon, charts and soft salable materials seem to still dominate actual practice. Many less than expert consultants want to make money and the HR practitioners want to bring in consultants that will make them look good. No wonder the title "consultant" has such a poor connotation Not much has changed in the past 30 years.
Many of the personnnel practices including recruiting, selection, retention, etc. have been written about for years and little is added here. Employee assessment was briefly mentioned, but the development of assessment centers that would measure results was not discussed at any length. Human Resource Accounting by Likert should have had much more explanation. The discussion of Power without differentiating power from authority was pretty weak.
People thinking about this book might ought to first read works by Rensis Likert, K. Lewin, Maslow and other leaders in Organizational Behavior. Experts in this field should be real experts and not just feel good marketers.

One of the biggest strengths of this book is its unity in diversity i.e. despite some 45 chapters expressing different perspectives, it goes remarkably well as a coherent whole. The book succeeds well in identifying the strategic HR themes for the morrow that HR professionals would have to master and nurture in order to deliver value in the present turbulent times. No doubt, the book will prove to be of immense use in expounding an articulate understanding of the dimensions in which the HR interventions are heading.
The book is a fine addition to readings meant for management professionals and CEOs. The publication of such books has been labeled as the emergence of an era of "Heathrow Management Theory." It contains discussion on some of the most-talked-about themes in people management in which some of the best possible names in the HR profession have participated. It will be particularly appreciated by the busy practitioner and the graduate HR students who are tired of reading hard core researches while searching simple answers to some of the most intriguing HR questions. I must however add that since the book has considered the importance of India and China as markets for western goods and technology as also the emerging economies, a chapter each on the state of HR in these economies would have added tremendous value from the reader's point of view. That would have met the needs of a large number of big companies who are looking for operations in these countries. It is to be admitted that the realities of these economies are indeed not the same as those of the industrially-advanced world, and the new global manager would like to acquaint herself with the nuances of the prevailing practices in these new locales of entrepreneurial focus.

To create this collection the editors contacted thought leaders and asked them "What is the future of HR?" They responded with the essays that make up this work. Its 45 brief chapters, contributed by 64 HR gurus, cover a broad spectrum of issues confronting the field. The chapters were clustered into nine parts, with the springboard clause of "In the future, an effective HR professional must..." These nine parts focus on outcomes and results-not actions or activities. This non-tradition (i.e., not based on specialized functions) organization of the book's content captures a dynamic, value-generating spirit. The authors hope they have provided a "road map for the profession," spotlighting how HR practitioners can constantly reinvent themselves to continue being of value people, organizations, and societies.
The books' core value is that it encompasses so many key and leading-edge topics written by so many people who are at the forefront of forging the field's future. But each chapter has its own stand alone merit; quite a few have considerable originality and 'push the envelop.' For example, in Chapter 14, "Changing Mental Models: HR's Most Important Task," Jeffrey Pfeffer argues that aside from being keepers and analysts of organization culture, HR needs to be concerned with the mental models and mindsets of the people of the company, particularly its leaders. Page-forward to chapter 30; there, Jac Fitz-Enz has a slightly different take; he concludes that to be a strategic business partner, HR leaders must become more culture managers than anything else-"there is no better place to start than with the organization's culture." Such thought-provoking views are typical of this book and distinguish it as lively, varied and ambitious collection of substantive thinking. Clearly, this is not a fast-read; given its agenda and scope-that's a virtue.
As an HR consultant and practitioner (HRconsultant.com, Partner, Stern & Associates), as well as a reviewer, I find this book to be a valuable, valid, and vivid snapshot of where the HR field is, where it's likely to be heading, and the many challenges it's confronting. No question about it, there's a lot of rewarding reading in this book.

Flagship Book On Leadership.......2007-07-09
This was the first training and book that I ever participated in on leadership. And, that was 21 years ago! It is still timely and effective. I was impressed in re-reading the book how much of the practices that I had incorporated and made my own. This training and book made a remarkable impact in my life.
If you want the basics on leadership in one bundle - then you want this book. Read it. Use it. Re-read it. Become a more effective and influential leader.

A Keeper for Leadership Skills.......2007-04-12
I bought this book to use as a reference for a paper that I was writing on the subject of leadership for a communication class. The class had to do with small group communication. As I read Dr. Gordon's approach to leadership, I found that his participative management style was really what I was looking for and a great fit for how leadership can work effectively in a small group. Although the style of his book is definitely written as a "training" book for effective leadership, it has many thought provoking and practical insights that you can apply in many other areas of your life. We all find ourselves in groups throughout our lives in various and diverse situations and circumstances. This book offers some down to earth, common sense advice that you can take and apply when you find yourself as the "leader of the pack" so to speak.
I particularly enjoyed the section on " Doing it yourself - or with the groups help". I think that many people mistakenly believe that you have to use your power and manipulate people to be a good leader and to get a job done. Dr. Gordon shows the advantages of being a facilitator and drawing upon the strengths and resources of all members of the team.
The principles described in this book will not go out of style, because it deals with people communicating with people. Times may change, but leading people will still be the common factor that spans the ages. It can be a great tool for a new leader or for one who wants to brush up on their leadership skills. As a student, I know I'll be referring to it in future classes. This will definitely be one of those books that I'll keep on my bookshelf for future reference.

Excellent Life Skills.......2007-03-12
This is not just for -- or even mainly for -- leadership training. This book teaches simple communication skills that apply to any relationship in which conflict occurs. I bought seven copies for my work team. I only wish the author would provide a concise synopsis of his approach for those who don't have time/inclination to read the entire book. I had to do this myself.
I have also read and put to good use the author's Parent Effectiveness Training. Why Dr Gordon's approach is not more widely known and put to use is beyond me. The world would be a much better place if more people understood and used these simple concepts.

This is a good book for people who want to expand their knowledge of some of the non-traditional types of loans. It goes into the pro & cons for each and different scenarios where they apply. If you are looking for a system to create wealth with real estate this book probably isn't for you.

Got good overview on whatch outs and not to do things in investment. Eye opener. first part tied in to what I was doing, which I thought was wrong. This interesting work is a collection of essays by some of the world's most respected leadership thinkers. Contributors include Charles Handy, James O'Toole, Thomas Stewart, Tom Peters, Barry Posner and James Kouzes. These essays were first presented at a special conference held to honor Warren Bennis. Organizers labeled the conference a festschrift, a German word for a volume of essays assembled by colleagues to be a tribute to a renowned scholar. The essays were edited and divided into five parts:
1. Setting the Stage for the Future.
2. The Organization of the Future
3. The Leader of the Future.
4. How Leaders Stay on Top of Their Game.
5. Insights from Young Leaders.
The result is an insightful examination on the state of leadership today and the challenges it can expect to experience in the future. The key concepts in this book for me were the following:
Settle critical issues once and for all - Then you will not have to revisit them daily. John Maxwell talks about how the earlier you settle the critical issues in your life the greater the potential for your success. Thus by avoiding procrastination on these key choices, you will no longer feel the guilty feelings associated with them.
The concept that the "pain" of discipline is
"momentary" but the benefit of it is long lasting (lasting the ENTIRE day - 16 hours of the day)was a revelation for me.
The funniest part was the morning prayer he included:
"Dear Lord - So far today I am doing alright,
I have not gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or self indulgent.
I have not whined, cursed or eaten any chocolate - however,
I am going to get out of bed in a few minutes and I will need a lot more help after that."
I highly recommend this CD. I find myself listening to it again and again, stopping it and jotting notes down.
Finally, I really found the values section in the 12th daily dozen to be unique and original. I haven't found anything like it in ANY other book of it's kind

John Maxwell once again captures the essence of how to change lives with his practical approach to managing "life". If you take action as recommended after each discipline, you too will have a life changing event. Even though John's 12 disciplines are his own, it's amazing at how many are also yours. It's worth every dime you might pay and every ounce of time you give it! I'm actually teaching the practices at my local church. What a difference "today" makes!

Well-known religious philosopher John Maxwell provides useful advice about family, finances, faith, values and personal growth. He uses personal experience, along with anecdotes from people such as basketball coach John Wooden, businessman Armand Hammer and actor Christopher Reeve to reinforce his ideas. He also stresses religious faith, but leaves the reader to adapt it to his or her personal beliefs. Maxwell has written more than 30 books and has worked as a pastor and later as a seminar leader.

John Maxwell's daily dozen are worth learning.
So what are the daily dozen? Attitude, priority, health, family, thinking, commitment, faith, relationships, generosity, values and growth. Note faith is listed. Maxwell realizes not everyone is spiritual. He allows readers the concept of refusing this goal. Maxwell includes examples through others as well as himself to get his points across.
Maxwell is adamant when he emphasizes the wisdom of practicing daily discipline in one's life -- think things through; settle your matters everyday; take care of your financial matters daily; surround yourself with positive people; and most of all remember what you do today impacts your tomorrow.
_Today Matters_ has the ability to empower its readers. Once we learn, we must practice. That's the key to empowering today and having a successful tomorrow. Highly recommended.
