What a deal.......2002-09-25
Prof. Silberberg was my professor some 20 years ago. Would he be pleased to discover that in Thailand this same book can be purchased new at a university bookstore for USD sixteen point sixty nine.
It's a very good textbook for Microeconomics.......2002-09-17
This is a very good textbook for the Advanced Microeconomics. I use this book for my PhD course and it use very clear math steps to describe microeconomics. You must buy it if you are in the PhD program
A nice mathematical introduction to microeconomics.......2002-06-25
The coverage of this book is not much comprehensive. It does not include some topics in microeconomics. But, it is a good textbook explaining economics in mathematics.
very rigorous and very difficult.......2002-05-15
i used this book in an upper level undergraduate course in advanced microeconomic analysis whose curriculum (thankfully) relied mostly on class notes rather than this textbook. although i am now working on a masters degree in statistics and using highly technical textbooks in my studies, let me tell you that 'the structure of economics' still takes the cake for the most difficult textbook i've ever used (up until now, anyway; my stochastic processes course next semester might use a textbook more difficult than this one). i honestly couldn't understand enough of it to definitively decide whether the book is really good or not, but based on what i could understand, it seems like an excellent book, albeit, one that will be accessible only to people who think on a higher plane with regards to advanced microeconomic principles. if you decide to buy this book, please realize that you are not going to breeze through this book like you might breeze through a book that is more on the level of walter nicholson's 'microeconomic theory' (an excellent intermediate level classic on microeconomics). you could easily spend 20 minutes reading one or two pages in 'the structure of economics' and still not be able to entirely grasp what you've read. basically, this is a book that separates the men from the boys with the criteria being whether one can understand it or not. also, i think that the edition pictured above with the black cover is a pretty old one. i bought my copy last year and i believe it was a later edition although i'm not sure which one. the cover on my book has a similar design, but the cover is green, white and blue.
Required Book for taking comprehinsive exams........2001-09-29
Understanding this book assures you a passing grade on your Microeconomics preliminary exam. Excellent presentation that far surpasses the eloquence of even Varian's Microeconomic Analysis. Students of economics should get this book early on and refer to it often as they progress through their graduate degree.

Book Description
This book deals with recent developments in classification and data analysis and presents new topics which are of central interest to modern statistics. In particular, these include: classification models and clustering methods, multivariate data analysis, symbolic data, neural networks and learning devices, phylogeny and bioinformatics, new software systems for classification and data analysis, as well as applications in social, economic, biological, medical and other sciences. The book presents a long list of useful methods for classification, clustering and data analysis. By combining theoretical aspects with practical problems it is designed for researchers as well as for applied statisticians and will support the fast transfer of new methodological advances to a wide range of applications.
Customer Reviews:
Understand clusters and clustering deeply.......2006-08-19
This is a good and broad approach about cluster and clustering. It is better for those who want to understand deeply the theme. Is has lot of formulas and mathmatics.
different methods for finding clusters.......2005-01-13
The book has a nice treatment of the problem of finding, in some sense, clusters in data. Several papers point out that there is often some subjectivity here, as to which data sits in a particular cluster. Fuzziness in the boundary of a cluster. It can depend on what your underlying model is.
Possibly of interest to some is work on high dimensionality data, and trying to find clusters in these. Even visualisations might be non-trivial.
The book has value in letting you see a variety of ideas for finding clusters. Perhaps some of these might prove germane to your research.

Survey Methodology (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology)
ASIN: 0761917810 |
Book Description
What should you see when you’re analyzing real data using one of the major statistical packages, such as SPSS, SAS or Microsoft Excel? This book will show you, and will walk you through the output from a variety of statistical outcomes, such as data reflecting a single common factor. Through the use of actual demonstrations, the authors supply readers with the computer programs necessary to simulate data sets with the statistical properties (usually multivariate) that are often assumed of real data. The reader is then shown how to analyze these data sets and how to interpret the results. The book begins with a general introduction to doing research and tips for using the three statistical packages. The authors next explore how to create data structures and perform univariate, bivariate, and multivariate simulations. They then show how to use the simulations to understand common statistical algorithms and their outputs when doing a basic correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, multiple regression, discriminate analysis, classification analysis and MANOVA. Throughout the book, the authors provide the reader with helpful guides, such as: *Hint boxes to give readers tips for executing particular techniques using the statistical software packages. *Steps that show each stage of a procedure, such as importing an Excel file into SAS. *Problems end each chapter so the reader can practice the techniques described. *Web Site with the SAS and SPSS programs and sample data.

Book Description
In Hypo-Analytic Structures Franois Treves provides a systematic approach to the study of the differential structures on manifolds defined by systems of complex vector fields. Serving as his main examples are the elliptic complexes, among which the De Rham and Dolbeault are the best known, and the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operators. Basic geometric entities attached to those structures are isolated, such as maximally real submanifolds and orbits of the system. Treves discusses the existence, uniqueness, and approximation of local solutions to homogeneous and inhomogeneous equations and delimits their supports. The contents of this book consist of many results accumulated in the last decade by the author and his collaborators, but also include classical results, such as the Newlander-Nirenberg theorem. The reader will find an elementary description of the FBI transform, as well as examples of its use. Treves extends the main approximation and uniqueness results to first-order nonlinear equations by means of the Hamiltonian lift.

Book Description
This first systematic and self-contained monograph on "Symbolic Data Analysis" presents the most recent methods for analyzing and visualizing symbolic data. It generalizes classical methods of exploratory, statistical and graphical data analysis to the case of complex data where the entries of a data table are, e. g., sets of categories or of numbers, intervals or probability distributions. Typical methods include: graphical displays using Zoom Stars, visualization and feature extraction by symbolic factor analysis, decision trees, discrimination, classification and clustering methods. Several benchmark examples from National Statistical Offices illustrate the usefulness of the methods. The book contains an extensive bibliography and a subject index.

Book Description
The aim of
Cooperative Games on Combinatorial Structures is to analyze conflict situations in which two or more players can make coalitions and obtain prizes and penalties. This approach to situations of competition and cooperation was given in the seminal treatise by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern,
Theory of Games
and Economic Behavior. Cooperative game theory has succeeded in providing many applications of game theory.
In this volume, games defined on combinatorial structures will be analyzed, i.e. a set system over a set of players. In many situations the author will work in a
closure space. Examples of closure operators are the spanning operator of linear algebra and all convex hull operators.
Chapters 1-4 constitute a review of mathematical concepts from
Cooperative Game Theory, Graph Theory, Linear and Integer
Programming, Combinatorial Optimization, Discrete Convex Analysis and
Computational Complexity. The table of contents is a short guide to the topics and methods covered in this book. In Chapters 11 and 12, several notebooks are presented with the system Mathematica by Wolfram in the contexts of the packages
DiscreteMath (Skiena) and
Cooperative (Carter). There will also be found in the book several research projects. These are intended to offer new ideas that the reader should consider with caution.
This book will be of interest to graduate students with some experience in game theory or mathematical programming and professional researchers in game theory, operational research and its applications in economic theory, and the political and social sciences. In addition, it will be especially useful for professionals who are interested in models for understanding and managing conflicts: management and operational research scientists, political and military scientists, and professional negotiators.

Book Description
"Data Analysis" in the broadest sense is the general term for a field of activities of ever-increasing importance in a time called the information age. It covers new areas with such trendy labels as, e.g., data mining or web mining as well as traditional directions emphazising, e.g., classification or knowledge organization. Leading researchers in data analysis have contributed to this volume and delivered papers on aspects ranging from scientific modeling to practical application. They have devoted their latest contributions to a book edited to honor a colleague and friend, Hans-Hermann Bock, who has been active in this field for nearly thirty years.
