Book Description

From the Internet to networks of friendship, disease transmission, and even terrorism, the concept--and the reality--of networks has come to pervade modern society. But what exactly is a network? What different types of networks are there? Why are they interesting, and what can they tell us? In recent years, scientists from a range of fields--including mathematics, physics, computer science, sociology, and biology--have been pursuing these questions and building a new "science of networks." This book brings together for the first time a set of seminal articles representing research from across these disciplines. It is an ideal sourcebook for the key research in this fast-growing field.

The book is organized into four sections, each preceded by an editors' introduction summarizing its contents and general theme. The first section sets the stage by discussing some of the historical antecedents of contemporary research in the area. From there the book moves to the empirical side of the science of networks before turning to the foundational modeling ideas that have been the focus of much subsequent activity. The book closes by taking the reader to the cutting edge of network science--the relationship between network structure and system dynamics. From network robustness to the spread of disease, this section offers a potpourri of topics on this rapidly expanding frontier of the new science.

Book Description

In the Fourth Edition of his best-selling text, Forsyth combines an emphasis on research, empirical studies supporting theoretical understanding of groups, and case studies to illustrate the application of concepts to actual groups thus providing students with the most comprehensive treatment of groups available. Forsyth builds each chapter around a real-life case and draws on examples from a range of disciplines including psychology, law, education, sociology, and political science. Because he tightly weaves concepts and familiar ideas together, the text takes students beyond simple exposure to basic principles and research findings to a deeper understanding of each topic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook.......2006-11-24

Intended as a college text, Forsyth explores all aspects of group dynamics in this one book. Writing is clear, examples are cited extensively and there are numerous tables and diagrams to help the reader absorb the material. It is not intended as light reading or as a practical guide to dealing with group conflict. Instead, it is an excellent and fairly comprehensive theoretical reference book.

3 out of 5 stars Assigned Textbook.......2005-10-10

Some interesting information, but I don't know if I would recommend it to someone if it were not assigned.

4 out of 5 stars Not an introductory book to read ...........2001-04-08

The book by Forsyth 'Group Dynamics' was written in a friendly, easy to understand style .... and it reflects research and applications in fields of I/O, Educational, Judiciary, Sports and Interpersonal settings .... group dynamics written in social and cognitive psych approach to groups....

What I especially like about this book is that it focuses specially on groups ..... as in social psych theories relating to groups (group decision making, cohesion, individuality-collectivity, environmental .,) ... including real-life case studies related to MNC's.

4 out of 5 stars Forsyth discusses the basics of group theories........1999-01-29

As can be expected in a field as broad as group theory, Forsyth does not explain in depth the various theories of group interactions, nor does he endorse any particular one as absolutely correct. He does, however, highlight the pertinent points of each theorist so that the reader can achieve a full appreciation for the work and experiments done in this field. The text is an excellent resource for students or curious readers new to the groups studies.

Book Description

This brief and inexpensive text provides a concise introduction to the dynamics of racial and ethnic relations. After summarizing key concepts and theories, the authors develop a simple theoretical framework that guides the presentation of data on each of the prominent ethnic groups in America. As a result, the book examines each ethnic group from the same perspective, allowing students to compare the dynamics of discrimination against African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, white ethnics, and Latinos. Moreover, this framework provides a way to examine ethnic relations around the world and to compare the dynamics in other parts of the world with those operating in America.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better textbooks on American ethnic groups.......2005-04-17

All in all, I'd have to say that this is one of the better textbooks on the market today dealing with American ethnic groups (but that's not really saying much). My biggest critique with such textbooks is that, all to often, they engage in culturalist essentialism. Furthermore, it is often implied that all members of said group behave in this fashion and "practice" this culture. The obvious fallacy of such an approach is that it fails to acknowledge that ethnicity is an emergent (rather than primordial) phenomenon, and that culture changes over time.

American Ethnicity for the most part is a decent textbook for courses focusing on racial and ethnic relations. I still think the best textbook in this area is Martin Marger's "Racial and Ethnic Relations: American and Global Perspectives." However, American Ethnicity is much cheaper in price. The authors employ a power-conflict perspective in their analysis of inter-ethnic conflict; tensions between groups are seen as an outgrowth of competition for access to jobs, education, housing, health care, and other services and institutions. For instructors, the book has an excellent Instructor's Resources CD-Rom, loaded with chapter outlines, multiple choice/essay/true-false quizzes and tests, and a list of films relating to the chapters.

However, there are some key criticisms of this book. Arab Americans are completely omitted, save a few lines about September 11 early in the book. As one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S., I would think textbooks would be inclusive of Arab Americans. Second, I really wish the photographs would be printed in full color, rather than black and white. Third, I would like to see a section on racial and ethnic relations in a few other nations (a la Marger's Racial and Ethnic Relations).

However, if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive textbook for a social science course on racial/ethnic relations, you should consider taking a look at American Ethnicity.

    4 out of 5 stars Mayer's Conflict Resolution primer.......2007-03-12

A serviceable text for students and acolyte practitioners of conflict resolution. This was required reading for a Master's course, and I found it to be engaging, immensely readable, and applicable. Since it is an entry-level text, it covers broad approaches and does not offer much specificity to a particular field of conflict resolution (international diplomacy, social work, and business negotiations are all painted with the same brush). Still, it is a testament to the universality of Mayer's core concepts that his conflict resolution methodology loosely applies to all of these venues.

5 out of 5 stars The Essentials of Conflict and its Resolution.......2002-06-25

To understand conflict, attention needs to be paid to the differences in ways individuals approach it. The way people handle conflict is definition of who they are and how they relate to others. People approach to conflict derives not only from their upbringing and how they have been taught to deal with conflict, but their culture plays a key role. Conflict often is generated when people feel disempowered. Power is the currency for conflict whether its exercise is intentional or not; when people are in conflict their power is in play. The choice in conflict is not whether to use power but how to use it. When people try to meet their needs in face of resistance, they are exercising power. The success of conflict depends on part on how much power they are able to muster and how wise they are in using it. The use of power can escalate or deescalate a conflict. It can create resistance or overcome it. People can employ their power to create momentum for constructive dialogue and collaborative negotiations; or they can use it to beat others down and to prevent co-operation. Everyone has a choice of how to use power or how to respond to power; the one choice participants don't have is not having any power at all.

This is a very theoretical study on conflict and its resolution. Unlike other texts this delves into the core of conflict and explains it to the detail.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and well written.......2002-05-18

This book provides a practical, easy-to-follow explanation of conflict resolution. The author uses his practice experience and research knowledge to provide practitioners with a solid understanding of the dynamics of conflict resolution.

    Book Description

Everyone knows the small-world phenomenon: soon after meeting a stranger, we are surprised to discover that we have a mutual friend, or we are connected through a short chain of acquaintances. In his book, Duncan Watts uses this intriguing phenomenon--colloquially called "six degrees of separation"--as a prelude to a more general exploration: under what conditions can a small world arise in any kind of network?

The networks of this story are everywhere: the brain is a network of neurons; organisations are people networks; the global economy is a network of national economies, which are networks of markets, which are in turn networks of interacting producers and consumers. Food webs, ecosystems, and the Internet can all be represented as networks, as can strategies for solving a problem, topics in a conversation, and even words in a language. Many of these networks, the author claims, will turn out to be small worlds.

How do such networks matter? Simply put, local actions can have global consequences, and the relationship between local and global dynamics depends critically on the network's structure. Watts illustrates the subtleties of this relationship using a variety of simple models---the spread of infectious disease through a structured population; the evolution of cooperation in game theory; the computational capacity of cellular automata; and the sychronisation of coupled phase-oscillators.

Watts's novel approach is relevant to many problems that deal with network connectivity and complex systems' behaviour in general: How do diseases (or rumours) spread through social networks? How does cooperation evolve in large groups? How do cascading failures propagate through large power grids, or financial systems? What is the most efficient architecture for an organisation, or for a communications network? This fascinating exploration will be fruitful in a remarkable variety of fields, including physics and mathematics, as well as sociology, economics, and biology.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars All the details you need to know to understand Watts' and Strogatz' famous article.......2007-03-12

The book basically gives all the details needed to understand Watts and Strogatz famous Nature article 'Collective Dynamics of Complex Networks' in 1998. I think that it is basically Watts PhD-thesis and as such it is of course nicely written, but nothing for the laymen who is rather referred to Watts other, more story-telling book 'Six Degrees', Barabasi's book 'Linked', or to another book that I would recommend most, namely the one by Mark Buchanan titled 'Small Worlds'. Mark is a skillful scientific writer and his book has a broader scope that makes it more interesting than each of the two monographs that are a bit more focused on the scientists own contribution.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough contents to be a good book.......2005-07-08

Networks are since a couple of years object of intense research in several different disciplines. One reason therefore is certainly the outstanding article by Watts and Strogatz, Collective dynamics of small world networks, Nature, 393:440--442, 1998. Unfortunatelly, this book can not continue the high level of this article. Actually, it does not really provide much more information than the article itself. I would suggest to read the article cited above and either decide for another book or to look directly in the literature and read the origninal articles.

To summarize, this book is not terribly weak, but one can clearly sees that it swims on the current 'complex networks' wave without providing enough justification for its existence. Of course, if you do not have access to the original literature and just what to have a general overview of complex networks and what be done with them, you may consider buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but some typos.......2005-06-02

Mathematical level: Moderate; there's no calculus, and little high level math, but the book is quite mathematical in tone, and some of the arguments may be difficult to follow without a good "math sense". There are MANY equations and graphs.

Good points: Watts covers an area that will interest those who deal with mathematical models of social networks e.g. models of disease-spread, especially HIV. It might, however, cover other things that can spread through networks as well. He presents analysis of graphs (or networks) that are neither random nor highly structured; and begins to examine ways that the degree of structure v. randomness can be measured.

Bad points: There are more than the usual number of typos. The models presented are a "first step", only.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2001-07-24

The author believes that human thought might be a small world, in the sense that one could reach any idea if he/she finds the right associations and "short-cut"s. The small-world theory is indeed one of those short cuts itself. It links many different domains and uncovers some interesting common behavior.

The theory is developed in a scientific manner with extensive numerical support. Rich literature reviews and many open questions make this book a good research reference. Complex observations are generally followed by qualitative explanations. However, some of the simpler derivations are not fully clear. I believe that adding a few lines here and there can turn this book into a textbook.

The book spans many different areas of science and a deep understanding of the related results may require some background. However, each chapter ends with a brief summary, allowing the reader to move forward if he/she finds the chapter difficult. In summary, as the author puts it, the book is simply the "end of the beginning" in an exciting new field.

5 out of 5 stars Great scientific synthesis.......2000-07-12

The book takes a systematic look at the 'small world' graphs. These natural graphs have been discovered by graph theoretist as erly as 60's, but were not properly understood. The graphs are remarkable in their ability to cluster and scale lengths. There are fundumental connections between these graphs and complex systems, discrete dynamical systems, computation and information processing. Duncan has done a tremendous job in building experimetal and theoretical models trying to understand how these graphs come about and sustain themselves. Read this book.

    Book Description

Recursive methods offer a powerful approach for characterizing and solving complicated problems in dynamic macroeconomics. Recursive Macroeconomic Theory provides both an introduction to recursive methods and advanced material, mixing tools and sample applications. The second edition contains substantial revisions to about half the original material, and extensive additional coverage appears in seven chapters new to this edition. The updated and added material covers exciting new topics that further illustrate the power and pervasiveness of recursive methods.

Significant improvements to original chapters include a better treatment of the existence of recursive equilibria, an enhanced account of the supermartingale convergence theorem, and an extended treatment of an optimal taxation problem in an economy in which there are incomplete markets. Completely new coverage in the second edition includes an introductory chapter, which gives an overview of the themes uniting the diverse topics treated throughout the book. Two new chapters offer a self-contained account of the optimal growth model and some of its basic applications in macroeconomics and public finance. Other new chapters cover such topics as how to formulate and compute Stackelberg or Ramsey plans in linear economies, sustainable risk-sharing equilibria without commitment, and the application of recursive contracts to topics in international trade. Most chapters conclude with exercises and the book includes two technical appendixes covering functional analysis and control and filtering.

3 out of 5 stars A book for Econometricians rather than Macroeconomists.......2004-10-30

The book is certainly written by distinguished people, but it seems to me that their focus in writting this book was more to exhibit mathematical methods to solve problems rather than discuss the problems themselves. Apparently the book is meant for training mathematical skills in dynamic programming, and prepare you for computer simulations of macroeconomic problems. But don't use it for understanding macroeconomics.

In general, the authors get into mathematical discussions that divert attention from the problem itself, and at the same time they don't explain why they are doing all these. Reading the book needs a lot of background knowledge and self-intuition. Apart from that some chapters are educational and fit for class work.

The first chapters cover mathematical basics about random process and Markov chains and estimation. They are the good chapters. The chapters on partial equilibrium, complete markets ad incomplete markets are also the ones that are noramlly used in class lectures. The book's coverage of consumption theory and economic growth is weak and insufficient. I would recommend Romer or Blanchard&Fisher book for that. The chapter on search and job matching is also simplistic and again not enough. In most of the chapters, technicality dominates concepts, so having a complementary textbook can be great help.

For one thing, the book has a lot of misprints and mistakes too, which seem to be fixed in the newer edition.

5 out of 5 stars get it free.......2004-05-17

This is a great book. But you can download the second addition free on Sargent's website, so I wouldn't recommend buying it.

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect book.......2003-09-12

This is a perfect book for three reasons; i) it is perfect for those who wish to learn modern macroeconomics. The book develops necessary knowledge and tools to be applied to dynamic economics, ii) Sargent is one of most prominent and leading macroeconomists of the world, and he should be Nobel prize winner in Economics, iii) the book is published by MIT.

4 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2003-04-01

When I recently left my job as cryer in a grim, north-eastern town, I was made the head of recursive macroeconomic theory at a major international bank. I could have done with a simpler introduction than this, to be honest, as my knowledge of RMT was limited. But now I hold my own in meetings simply by spouting a few long words from this book (mainly "macroeconomic" and "recursive" - theory doesn't seem to impress as much) and delegating to underlings.

4 out of 5 stars Not the first book in Dynamic Macro, but excellent afterward.......2002-12-02

The first time i read the book, i'm sure this should not be the first text book for Dynamic Macroeconomics everyone should read. It's better to read somewhere else as an introduction to the idea of dynamic macroeconomics. Romer 'Advanced Macroeconomics' and Stokey, Lucas, Prescott 'Recursive Methods' are more appropriate to start. After gainning some similarity with Dynamic Methods, it would be much better to study models about macroeconomics presented in the book.

This book is the presentations of various models using Dynamic / Recursive Macroeconomics. It makes them easier and time-saving to study many kinds of model in a semester. It's GOOD & HELPFUL IN THIS SENSE. However, it might not be a good book for study in depth. You are better to study from the original papers for the same topics.

I think, this book is similar to Tirole 'Theory of Industrial Organization' in spirit, but different in content. They both show the simplified version of various models in the fields.

If you think you like this style, you would like to have it. But if you don't, it might be better just to skim (from the library) and read the original papers.

Hope this comment would be helpful for you to make a decision :)

      Book Description

The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy reinvents the contemporary social welfare policy textbook. Organized around the explicit premise that every kind of social work practice embodies a social welfare policy, the book develops three types of knowledge: (1) a description of social welfare policy, (2) a model for understanding any social welfare policy, and (3) tools for thinking critically about social welfare. Recognizing the fluidity of social welfare, the book also helps undergraduate and graduate students identify the triggers that lead to changes in social policy, and, in turn, influence what social workers actually do. This innovative text presents complex and challenging ideas so that all students can understand them. It reconfigures the discussion of basic policy issues--the construction of social problems, descriptions of major social welfare programs, and the purpose and functions of social welfare policy-in a fresh and accessible way. Covering all CSWE policy-required topics, the text breaks new ground as well by laying out a five-part policy model that shows how the forces of ideology, politics, history, economics, and social movements interact both to create and to change the social welfare system. Through full chapters on each component, this model explores and clarifies the complicated relationship between social policy and social change, including issues of race, class, and gender. This practical and real-world text empowers students. By making them aware of the persuasive influence of policy on practice, it prepares them as professionals in the twenty-first century to understand the past, present, and future dynamics of social welfare policy.

      Book Description

This completely revised second edition of the best-selling text presents an up-to-date, comprehensive introduction to persuasive communication and attitude change. Employing the same organizational strategy he used in the first edition but offering more applications and fresh examples, Richard Perloff systematically explores the impact of persuasive communications on attitudes toward a host of topics spanning health, politics, and racial prejudice.

      This text will:
      *enhance students' understanding of persuasion theories and research;
      *introduce readers to the social science perspective on persuasion;
      *expose students to major issues discussed in the field of persuasion research;
*help students appreciate complexities and subtleties in the dynamics of everyday persuasion; and
*raise consciousness about the ethics of contemporary persuasion.

Part I introduces students to the ubiquity of persuasion, how it is defined and differentiated from related terms, and the meaning of core concepts like attitude, belief, and value. Perloff combines a discussion of major concepts, such as balance theory, accessibility, and the theory of reasoned action with application of these concepts to numerous situations in everyday life, including the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, body art, religion, abortion, and AIDS prevention.

Part II of the book explores communication and attitude change. Contemporary theories, such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the Extended Parallel Process Model, and Cognitive Dissonance Theory are discussed in detail. Students and professors will find an up-to-date discussion of research generated by these theories, coupled with criticisms of theoretical perspectives.

Part III of the book examines advertising and communication campaigns. After introducing students to advertising--using well-known advertising slogans and motifs--Perloff debunks subliminal advertising and describes major theories of advertising effects.

Written for the upper-undergraduate level, The Dynamics of Persuasion is appropriate for courses in the social sciences, notably communication, speech, journalism, psychology, marketing, and sociology.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on the basics of persuasion........2002-08-14

This book is easy to read and understand. The concepts are backed up with studies and real-world examples, not too much speculation and theorizing. There is so much thought-provoking material, it really stands out for a textbook. In fact, this is one of the best textbooks I have ever seen.

Want to persuade people in everyday life? This isn't a bad place to start learning about it. You'll get an overview of dozens and dozens of ways to become more persuasive, why they work, and examples of how to use them.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Textbook.......2000-01-09

I teach a course in social influence at a local university, and this is the textbook that I like to use. Some of my students think it is overly dense, but a textbook isn't supposed to read like a novel. It has a great range of information, and is written from a communications, rather than a psychological, perspective. I find it highly readable and accurate, and love the section on propaganda. I hope a second edition will be available soon.

5 out of 5 stars It is an investment for life. Go for it........1999-12-05

I have read this book several times each time found it interesting and challenging. Written in an extravagant manner the book touches upon the main techniques of Persuasion. The book helped me a lot while writing me thesis on Persuasion in Advertising. Hope you'll like it too. It a visa for new territories, vague and yet real. Lilly George Bulgaria

      Book Description

"This book beautifully educates the reader on the world in which batterers live and raise their children. Judges, lawyers, and others in decision-making roles will find this information very helpful in crafting appropriate decisions regarding a child’s safe contact with a battering parent."

      — Judge Bobbi Alpers, Iowa District Court

"Excellent. I’ve been waiting for this book. It is a crisp, cogent, comprehensive exegesis on batterers, their parenting styles, their custody litigation practices, and the adverse impact of their violence on battered mothers and their children. A must read for attorneys, advocates, custody evaluators, judges, and batterer intervention service providers."

      — Barbara Hart, J.D., Legal Director, Battered Women’s Justice Project/Civil Division

"This is by far the clearest and most insightful book to appear on domestic violence and custody issues, thoroughly grounded in both the research and the court system. An indispensable tool and a breakthrough, it is must reading for anyone handling the 50% of custody cases where domestic violence issues arise."

      — Joan Zorza, Esq., Editor, Domestic Violence Report

"Critically informative for those who work directly with victims or abusers. The authors provide a comprehensive road map to the many problems batterers exhibit as parents, how these affect children, and what can be done about it."

      — David Adams, Ed.D., Psychologist, Founder and Co-Director of Emerge

"This is a groundbreaking work that elucidates the complexity of the family dynamics engendered by a batterer’s presence in the home. Grounded in a sophisticated understanding of psychological trauma, and offering important recommendations for assessment and treatment, this book should be required reading for all professionals who work with parents or children affected by domestic violence."

      — Beth Tabor Lev, Ph. D., Director of Training, The Traumatic Stress Institute

The Batterer as Parent takes the reader inside of homes affected by domestic violence, imparting an understanding of the atmosphere that battering men create for the children who live with them. Bancroft and Silverman show how partner abuse affects each relationship in a family, and explains how children’s emotional recovery is inextricably linked to the healing and empowerment of their mothers. The authors cover the important but often-overlooked area of the post-separation parenting behaviors of men who batter, including their use of custody litigation as a tool of abuse. Readers also are guided in evaluating change in the parenting of men who batter, assessing risk to children from unsupervised visitation, and supporting the emotional recovery of children. Although the book is written primarily for professionals, its accessible style makes it engaging and useful for abused mothers and anyone else wishing to assist children exposed to battering.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book in Print about Batterers.......2007-05-09

In the middle of a very ugly divorce, I found this book to be the best. It is simiple to read with real live situations and real research. Not based on textbook learned behaviors. It gives a very realistic view of some very ugly situations. It was like reading my life story with insights on why my divorce got so ugly with a man whom I thought I loved.

This is a must read for every emotionally charged divorce.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-10-17

This book succintly provides critical information for judges, therapists, parent evaluators/GALs, and most importantly parents trying to protect their children from harm. It highlights the many misconceptions present in the legal system that enable abusers to continue to victimize their children and spouses, and explains how these situations should be addressed, backed by data to support the authors' conclusions. This is a credible well-written book that provides a rational counter to the awful theories of Richard Gardner.

5 out of 5 stars For Public Consumption.......2005-10-26

As a former severely battered wife and for two decades as an advocate for social justice: this book is long overdue. Specifically, the authors address the untenable situation of a
      batterer's children.
Public knowledge of the scourge of wife battering has increased dramatically in 20 years. Finally, the most vulnerable to abuse, the children, are recognized. It is to be hoped that universities and all community groups, hospitals, social workers and police will have this as required reading. In conjunction with this book, the volume entitled From Madness to Mutiny should be studied. Then, all should view films - for example ; Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories.

5 out of 5 stars Male "victim" is obviously a perpetrator.......2005-01-24

Anyone with real experience and knowledge in the realm of domestic violence can clearly see that Bancroft is on target. He is one of the few authors who truly understands the dynamics of abuse and can accurately assess those who are truly abusers ... many of whom call themselves the "victims." There are definitive signs of men who abuse, though they work so hard to hide it that they get angry when they discover their attempts don't work with Brancroft.
This book is a must have for anyone truly interested in recovering from abuse or working within the justice system to stop such abuse.

4 out of 5 stars Abuse has no gender.......2004-07-16

Although much research is biased towards the most physically dangerous abusers, the ones who beat (don't like the word batter a lot) their victims and often kill them are usually men. There is of course, a lot of abuse perpetrated by mothers on children and women upon partners. Abuse is abuse, no matter what the gender, and all abuse harms children.
Lundy Bancroft deals primarily with the behaviors, patterns and impact of abuse. When anyone becomes a hardened habitual abuser who uses his or her power to intimidate, manipulate or terrify his or her victims into submission and control: he OR she is considered an 'abuser'. When they phsically hit, break bones and kill, he OR she is a 'batterer'. I work with a domestic violence agency and we have quite a few court ordered women in our program, albeit not as many as men (90% or more of the MOST serious battering is done by men the country over). I have read much of Bancroft's work and he is on target.
