My husband LOVES to cook and try different recipes. I bought him this book but he didn't care for it because it has no pictures and he likes to see what the dish is supposed to look like or even to decide whether he wants to try it or not by seeing the picture.
This books gives a lot of Greek culture, he says, but he wasn't interested in that.

Great Food, Confusing Directions.......2007-01-07
This book is gorgeous, both in the sumptious photos and the stunning layout. The intro is fantastic with its summary of differences in cuisine between the mainland and the various islands, and the glossary in back is extremely helpful. Best of all is the food -- not a bad recipe so far and I've tried vegetables to meat to fish, appetizers to mains. This book has even made me like leafy greens. Braised corfu style, mustard greens and spinach turn out to taste as good as anything on the planet. Once that is, you get past the confusing directions. This book is not for beginning cooks. Even experienced cooks are likely to stumble. For instance, in the recipe for braised greens, the ingredients list calls for 2 large ripe tomatoes or 1 cup canned tomatoes with their juice or 1 cup water. Does this mean you can use fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes or water, or does it mean that if you use canned tomatoes you can use either the juice they come in or a cup of water? Ambiguities like this abound. Do you know which are the tender stalks on fennel? When making meatballs with rice and herbs in lemon broth, when the recipe says the chicken broth mixture should completely cover the meatballs, what do you do when it doesn't? If you've cooked before you can eventually figure these things out, but it's clear that while the author really knows how to cook, she didn't have a fresh set of eyes and hands try out the recipes. Still, don't be scared away. Everything in here is great. The food tastes fantastic, and the introduction to each dish that sets it in context is wonderful. It never would have ocurred to me to serve greens over polenta with currants and onions. It was quite a wonderful combo, especially when viewed with the intro that says the recipe came from a doctor in Ithaca who considered it a tribute to the people who ate it on cold, winter nights during World War II as they waited for freedom. As long as you can figure out what set polenta ought to look like, you too can enjoy this simple and tasty dish. The food may be traditional but Kremizi gives it a modern take. I use this book alot and know I will discover something new every time. I just wish the directions were more obvious, but I'm getting over it. The food is that good.
Feels Authentic.......2005-10-22
This book is well-written. Instructions are easy to follow and "toothy" Sometimes you get the feeling the recipe author took the shortest path possible when writing the directions, not here. However, the directions aren't overly lengthy, just enough insight to ensure success. The photography is beautiful. I like the variations and background that accompany the recipes.

Salonica Remembered.......2005-08-02
I discovered this book by reading Mazower's book. This was a pure delight to read. The author brought me back to a Thessaloniki I had learned about in Mazower, but added the warm, personal details of family life and interaction among the groups which made up Salonica in the early 20th century. I didn't want the book to end. I was surprised to learn that it had been published quite a while ago and that the author's child added an epilogue. I wish I had read it before and wandered the streets to find some of the landmarks.
A superbly written memoir.......2003-07-17
Farewell To Salonica: City At The Crossroads is the autobiography of Leon Sciaky and tells of his having grown up in Salonica (now called Thessaloniki), in Greece. A remarkable view of a place where Sephardic Jews, Greeks, Turks, Macedonians, Albanians, and Bulgarians all met, traded, and went about their daily lives. A superbly written memoir, Farewell to Salonica is a heartfelt, highly recommended testimony to a memorable city and a cultural mecca.

The Lessons of the Paris Commune.......2006-02-27
Please note that the substance of the following review has been used in the following three books. The Paris Commune 1871 by Robert Tombs; The Paris Commune of 1871 by Eugene Schulkind; and, The Paris Commune by David Shafer. March 18, 2006 is the 135th Anniversary of the establishment of the Commune so I have been doing some reading or rather rereading about that historic left event. My central concern has been the question of how the Commune could have continued beyond May 1871. This investigation has centered around the question of revolutionary leadership (or rather lack of it). These three books represent thoughtful presentations, obviously not without disagreements, in that pursuit.
When one studies the history of the Paris Commune of 1871 one can learn something new even though from the perspective of revolutionary strategy the Communards made virtually every mistake in the book. Nevertheless, one can still learn lessons from those experiences and measure mistakes of the Communards against the experience acquired by later revolutionary struggles and above all by later revolutions, not only the successful Russian Revolution of October 1917 but the failed German, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Chinese and Spanish revolutions in the aftermath of World War I. More contemporaneously we also have the experiences of the partial victories of the later Chinese, Cuban and Vietnamese revolutions in the post-World War II period.
Notwithstanding the contradictory nature of the later revolutions cited above, and as if to show that history is not always totally a history of horrors against the fate of the masses, militants today proudly honor the Paris Commune as a beacon of the socialist revolution. It is just for that reason that Karl Marx fought tooth and nail in the First International to defend it against the rage of capitalist Europe and faint-hearted elements in the European labor movement. It is truly one of the revolutionary peaks.
The Commune however also presented in embryo the first post-1848 Revolution instance of the crisis of revolutionary leadership of the international labor movement. That is, the need for a revolutionary party to lead the working class to victory. Placing the problems facing the Commune in this context made me realize that this crisis of revolutionary leadership really has a much longer lineage that I had previously recognized. I had previously placed its start at the collapse of the Socialist International at the beginning of World War I when most European socialist parties took a defensist position toward their own governments by voting for war credits. Unfortunately, the leadership question is still to be resolved.
Many working class tendencies, Anarchist, Anarcho-Syndicalist, Left Social Democratic, Communist and Left Communist justifiably pay homage to the defenders of the Paris Commune and claim its traditions. Why does an organization of short duration and subject to savage reprisals still command our attention? The Commune shows us the heroism of the working masses, their capacity to unite for action, their capacity to sacrifice themselves in the name of a future, more just, organization of society. Every working class tendency can honor those qualities, particularly when in some cases they are far removed from any active need to do more than pay homage to the memory of the fallen Communards.
Nevertheless, to truly honor the Communards it is necessary to understand that along with its positive qualities at the same time the Commune shows us the many times frustrating incapacity of the masses to act in their objective interests, their indecision in the leadership of the movement, their almost always fatal desire to halt after the first successes. Obviously, only a revolutionary party sure of itself and of its program can provide that kind of leadership in order fight against these negative trends. At that stage in the development of the European working class where political class consciousness was limited to the vanguard, capitalism was still capable of progressive expansion and other urban classes were at least verbally espousing socialist solutions it is improbable that such a mass organization could have been formed. Nevertheless such an organization was objectively necessary to seize and, more importantly, to hold power.
It is a truism in politics, including revolutionary politics, that timing is important and many times decisive. As many commentators have noted, seizure of power by the Commune came too late. It had all the possibilities of taking the power on September 4, 1870 rather than March 18, 1871 and that would have permitted the proletariat of Paris to place itself at the head of the workers of the whole country in their struggle. At the very least it would have allowed time for the workers of other cities and the peasantry in the smaller towns and villages to organize their forces for action in defense of Paris and to create their own communes. Unfortunately the Parisian proletariat had neither a party, nor leaders forged by previous struggles who could or would reach out to the rest of France.
Moreover, a revolutionary workers' party, while entirely capable of using parliamentary methods is not, and should not, be a machine for parliamentary wrangling. In a revolution to rely solely on such activity amounts to parliamentary cretinism. One can think of the role of the Mensheviks and Social Revolutionaries after the February Revolution in Russia in 1917. In Paris the Central Committee of the National Guard, the embodiment of organizational power and in effect the prototype for a Workers' Council or Soviet, had more than its share of such wrangling and confusionist politics.
In contrast, a revolutionary party is the accumulated and organized experience of the proletariat. It is only with the aid of the party, which rests upon the whole history of its past, which foresees theoretically the road forward, all its stages, and knows how to act in the situation, that the proletariat avoids making the same historical mistakes, overcomes its hesitations, and acts decisively to seize power. Needless to say those same qualities are necessary to retain power against the inevitable counter-revolutionary onslaught. The proletariat of Paris did not have such a party. The result was that the revolution broke out in their very midst, too late, and Paris was encircled. Like other revolutionary opportunities six months delay proved fatal. Capitalism cruelly exacted its revenge. That is the great lesson of the Commune.

Quite interesting.......2000-02-18
Jan does a good job in outlining the course of events that occurred over a long period of time. My main complaint about his work is that he maintains a focus on the intelligentsia to a point where I as a reader felt that there was a large void left to be filled. Nevertheless, this book is filled with interesting tidbits that will well feed a historical mind. Even though he quite clearly writes as a patriot and does little to explain the current clamboring for Belarus to reunite with the Russians, he manages to maintain something of a level hand through the course of the book in regards to the Lithuanians, Ukrainians and Poles. Especially towards the end, he provides some insightful analysis into the current mood of the country, though his economic analysis is, at best, limited. Should Mr. Zaprudnik ever choose to extend his writings on this rather interesting country, I would like to see him write more on the trends of society at large, for I think he would provide a very intriguing insight into a rather obscure field.
A fascinating book about a people who eschew their nation........1997-11-23
Jan Zaprudnik poignantly records what was and what might have been in his beloved Belarus. He writes from a nationalist point of view about a country which finds it hard to be nationalistic, currently preferring a wider slavic entity in wishing to unite with Russia. The book attempts to unify a shifting geography and disparate history of Lithuanians, Russians and Belarusians into that of a single nation. The result is as incohesive as modern Belarus. Therein may lie its genius or dearth.

If you have read Richard Lamb's book, Mussolini as Diplomat, then there's no point of buying this book as it essentialy covers the same ground, and comes to the same conclusions. What's more, even if the former is a dry, boring read, it's still a bargain at $5 for a hardcover.
A Fascinating History.......2002-07-02
Salerno really knows what he's talking about in this well written, precise and intriguing look at the build up to WWII. I found the original research accurate, the organization easy to follow and the analysis fresh and well supported.

The best so far !.......2001-06-02
Firstly let me begin by stating that I have read this work cover to cover three times and several chapters many times more. It is the best I have read to date and I have nearly every work (in English) on the Caspian - in regards to energy expliotation there is, so I do speak from a position of knowledge.
Although printed in early 2000 I did not get my copy until mid 2000. Compared to other works this is in a league of its own - both for content and the broad range of contributors. One of the things that bug me about works on the Caspian region is that IRan is relegated to a passing comment - because America's influence or its pipeline mentality seems to overcome other writers. This does work does not. Iran is central through this work.
Divided into 5 sections, with 16 chapters, this work natually being an edited work allows the reader to pick and choose sections or chapters to read. I particularly enjoyed the emphaise throughout the work on Iran - it was even-handed in its measure - which is what you would expect.
As with other works there is a section on the legal perspective of the Caspian and the chapter by Mirfendereski is very good - providing insights I have not come across in other works or articles.
The work is nearly 300 pages in length including notes, and was worth all of the $..... I paid for it - hardcover and a falling Australian Dollar did not help. This book is for those already with a reasonable knowledge of the region and with that in mind other introductory works such as Amineh or Crossiant/Bulents works may be better suited for the novice - of course there will always be overlaps between similar works but by far this is the best yet.
Part of the reason why I enjoyed this work so much is that it focuses on littoral communities of the region (and a brief chapter to America as well)(can't get away from them ) so in that regard it is not an all in one compendium, and there is a strong emphasis throughout the work on the actual Caspian Sea itself - as well as the energy reserves. It is a good book and worth the money.
