Book Description
This book addresses government social policy in relation to the environment, pollution, the workplace, and public safety and health. Professor Sagoff presents an analysis based on ethical, cultural, and political concerns, that reveals how environmental legislation can be sensitive to political reality and responsive to economic costs. The argument is developed to cover the relationship between liberalism and environmentalism, the place of values in environmental science, the importance of a "land ethic," the role of public interest groups, and efforts to reform environmental law.

Critique of cost-benefit analysis for environmental matters.......2000-06-27
Prof. Sagoff demonstrates the problematic nature of an economic approach to environmental decisionmaking. Even granting that we could quantify environmental values in dollar terms, he raises the important question of why we would want to do such a thing. The author argues that questions of balancing environmental values against other "goods" should be decided in the public political arena, and not by reference to people's private willingness to pay. Somewhat puzzling is Sagoff's adherence to a utilitarian philosophy; I'm still waiting for someone to point out the obvious liberty and distributive-justice problems with cost-benefit analysis in the sphere of environmental regulation.
Book Description
Written in 1817, this famous treatise lays the groundwork for the principles of the market economy. It established the guiding ideas behind the economic concepts of diminishing returns and economic rent. As a leading master of economic principles of his time, Ricardo developed the theories now identified as distribution theory and international trade theory, or comparative advantage.

Is it over yet?.......2006-01-22
I don't want to insult Ricardo. He was unequivocally brilliant. But this book was painful to read. Granted, I am not an economist, so maybe this just wasn't for me. I found it dry and devoid of all emotion. I understand that it is intended to educate and to promote an economic theory, not to entertain, but God man, show your readers some mercy! I am a firm believer that if a book is too boring to read, the author's message will never get out, regardless of its merits.
Principles of Political Economy and Taxation by Ricardo.......2003-10-29
This work is a masterpiece of economic theory only second to
the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith. Ricardo states that value
is a function of effort and not the price paid for labor. He
reminded us that labor plus the tools to assist labor affected
the creation of value. Therefore; increases in value were in
direct proportion to increments in labor. Value was also a
function of the time it took to bring the goods to market.
Surprisingly, the cultivation of inferior land resulted in a
higher exchangeable value of raw produce because more labor
was required in its production. If we become more efficient in
land cultivation, rents will go down because more can be
cultivated with less land. In addition, the exchangeable value
of commodities is undisturbed by natural or accidental causes.
Laborers derive their greatest pleasure when the market price
of labor exceeds the natural price. Therefore; wages will
increase in response to increases in the demand for labor.
Rises in rent are accompanied by increments in the share of
produce because landlords want more rent when harvests are
greater. Accordingly, the price of corn is a function of the labor to produce it. If wages go down, then prices must fall.
As the price of labor goes down, profits increase but the
price of the commodity may not go down. Taxes on profits
tend to increase the price of a commodity . If money is not
taxed, then all commodities will be subject to price increases.
Ultimately, a tax on land begets a tax on produce. In addition,
a tax on labor will raise its price. In addition, the price of
provisions determine the price paid to the worker. If money
decreases in value, all commodities will be subject to steep
price increases. This was seen in modern times with the
fluctuation of the Russian currency. Ultimately, bounty
lowers the price to foreigners because the government subsidizes
the bounty paid to the local merchants to stimulate trade.
The theory of rent transfers value but does not create it.
Ultimately, wages are determined by the price of food and
cost of production.
This theory of wages differs from Adam Smith who said that
wages were a function of the ease or hardship to do work, the
difficulty or expense of learning a trade, the constancy
of employment, the trust reposed in the workmen, the probability
of success or failure of the venture or the fear of misfortune.
David Ricardo's work is an important milestone in the theory
of economics and comparison to the work of Adam Smith.
Told the truth.......2003-08-18
David Ricardo was never one to mince words.
"The opinion entertained by the labouring class, that the employment of machinery in frequently detrimental to their interests, is not founded on prejudice and error, but is comfortable to the correct principles of political economy." Unlike today, the ruling class and their intellectuals of the 19th Century were not affraid to say what they were up to.
Divers Typos.......2003-03-04
The publisher should be convinced that the automatic spell checker should not be so heavily relied upon. The cover art is an expression of how an armchair graphic artist can be innovative with Photoshop. If a book of such high esteem be put out for public enrichment its presentation should not be so insincere.
A must for the student of Social Sciences.......2003-02-12
Along with Adam Smith, the Englishman David Ricardo is one of the fathers of the so-called Classics school of economic thought, and the Principles is his major opus, one he was very much reluctant to write, but only did so at the urgings of James Mill and his son John. Written in the first half of the 19th victorian century, he was nonetheless, a very freed mind, who did not accept or indulge in the extravagancies of the beginning of the industrialization proccess in England. To David Ricardo, Karl Marx owes a good share of his theory of labour, something essential in the labour movements of then. The concepts adapted and created by David Ricardo is transported to the text in a dry and concise style, not too much worried in polemics, but only interested in address the topics he raises in a very precise way. IF you are a student of Social Sciences, this book is a must.
Book Description
The standard economics textbook for more than a generation, PRINCIPLES OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, written by John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) in 1848, is as much a synthesis of his predecessors' ideas as an original treatise on economics. Heavily influenced by the work of David Ricardo, and taking ideas from Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus, Mill demonstrates how important economic concept can be applied to realworld situations.
Reflecting his utilitarian social philosophy, Mill suggests that social improvements are always possible. He thus proposes modifying a purely laissez-faire system, advocating trade protectionism and regulation of employees' work hours for the benefit of domestic industries and workers' well-being. In such features he displays a leaning toward socialism.
For anyone with an interest in the history of economics or the history of ideas, Mill's landmark work still makes for stimulating reading.
Customer Reviews:
The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-14
This is a very good and very pertinent book. If the people of the time had paid more attention to Mill as opposed to Ricardo and then Marks our world would definitely have been a safer and more peaceful place. Mill has some very sound economic ideas. His ideas are not only reasonable and rational they are possible, compassionate and much more sensible that what we have today; ideas that should be revived and reviewed today. He has a number of interesting answer to basic economic problems. If economics is your passion don't miss this one. This man is no dummy.

Can the planets predict economic conditions? In Time and Money, best-selling author Robert Gover links the planets to major economic turning points in US history, going back to Columbus. Using planetary patterns that coincide with past economic hard times and social upheavals, Gover reveals why the 2000-teens are going to be the most horrendous decade in US history.

A Waste of Money On A Planetary Scale.......2006-04-17
Where can I begin? The structure of this book is like trying to keep visual track of a ping-pong ball in a Lotto machine. I was nauseated from his jerking and heaving tour through his dustbin view of history to justify his page-after-page hammering cynical condemnation of the United States, Capitalism and all things in history Anglo-European. This book is simply an extended act of self-gratification. Somehow, this was supposed to be useful to me by referencing, almost as an aside, the angular relationships of the outer planets.
I am still beside myself with regret for this purchase. The title "Time & Money" exeplifies what I wasted, and even worse, to the financial benefit of the author. I spent futile hours of reading for some modicam of value. This book is useless for any meaningful application in financial astrology as you're led to believe.
What else? This is a meandering accumulation of 1/2 page opinionated nodules somehow linked to astrology to advance his cynical political and social beliefs. This book at times struck me as some kind of drug-induced melding of Fahrenheit 911, the rantings of an angry socialist who works for the Post Office and a paranoid conspiracy nut.
On page 235, he refers to and dismisses in only 1/2 page the historic work of Louise McWhirter who compiled one of the most simple and accurate ways of determining economic cycles. Gover condescendingly tells us, "To explain her system in more detail would take us on a detour of dense complexity..." If this is how he views McWhirter's work, then he either believes everyone else but him is a moron, or he has a shorter attention span than the notorious President Reagan who he of course villfies.
What mystifies me is how any supposed astrologer can do so much to obfuscate any meaningful data in 377 pages. One political rant after another with an "oh, by the way" reference to hard angles of Pluto & Uranus, followed by more criticism and cynicism burying any meaningful information on transits of the U.S. natal chart which he mockingly refers to as "Sam's Chart."
Was there anything of use in this book? Yes, I actually found ONE THING. That was the author's justification of using the 2:17am birth time for the U.S. natal chart; that the Founding Fathers were Masons and would've wanted the U.S. birth time to be when Jupiter in the 2nd House. That was the best justification of that birth time I've read. Given how outstanding this factoid was from the rest of the book, I have a hard time believing it was his original thought.
Who ARE these other people who give this book five stars? If they aren't friends or relatives of the author, then it must be a form of Stockholm Syndrome.
Recommended for students of astrology, economics and metaphysics.......2006-04-10
Time And Money: The Economy And The Planets explores the depths of astrological influence on economic changes. Author and astrology expert Robert Gover includes predictions some of the coming economic fatalities (or perhaps blessings) of our nation's near future. Time And Money is an informed and informative. A grand read, Time And Money is especially recommended for students of astrology, economics and metaphysics.
Unexpected as the Future.......2005-11-20
Gover's new book is as unexpected as, well, the author himself. The former best seller (One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding), fashions himself an economic analyst as well as an astrologer. What does astrology have to with financial forecasting? You might know that some of the wealthiest financiers throughout the ages have consulted the stars. It's a dirty little secret that warrants further examination. But the greatest value of this book might be Gover's organization of American-economic history from a social point of view. It's a worthy and timely title for years ahead.
How planets affect time and money.......2005-07-31
TIME & MONEY explores the connection between the planets and the major turning points in US History. It shows how planets affect our lives, our finances, great depressions, the stock market, wars and social upheavals.
Author Robert Gover's uncomplicated, easy to read style allows him to communicate Astrological information to readers who know nothing about Astrology. He offers a unique perception of the history of our country and of the world. He says. "The Native American as a race has been through the worst 'germ warfare' holocaust in known history. He shows us America through the viewpoint of Native Americans, African Americans, new immigrants, women and the poor. Not since THE UGLY AMERICAN has a book allowed us to see ourselves as the rest of the world sees us.
Like Thomas Paine, author of COMMON SENSE, Bob Gover tells it as he sees it, disturbing the powerful and inspiring the oppressed. He says, "Today most Americans and others from rich countries ignore the plight of the starving millions and the disappearance of the American middle class. Most Americans had no idea why we were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001 just as most Arabs had no idea why they were attacked by the Crusades in 1099."
He goes on to say "Back in the sixties, the Military-Industrial complex was all American. Now Congress has enabled big corporations to plunder countries all over the planet including our own homeland by outsourcing American jobs to third world countries and importing cheap labor from south of the border to downsize American workers."
The book explains the nature and purpose of money, how it is used and abused. Gover shows how to use Astrology to predict stock market tendencies. He reminds us: "The Dark Ages began with falling income at the bottom of the social ladder and spread up the ladder. Today real wages have begun to fall for 80% of the population."
He says: "Economic imbalance, dwindling oil, mass migration of distressed people, awful weather due to Global Warming bring out the best and worst in people." He warns that foreign central banks with massive dollar reserve holdings place the United States in a vulnerable position. China could get angry about Taiwan or the OPEC could disagree with our actions in the Middle East and replace dollars with Euros as their standard.
TIME & MONEY entertains, educates and gets us thinking. It keeps us turning pages and inspires us to examine who we are and where our country is right now. Gover's book shows how we use our time and our money. I would recommend the book to anyone who values time or money.

A Stellar Book.......2005-07-22
I have recommended this book to everyone I know with an interest in Financial Astrology. It is rare that we get a book written by a previously successful author of fiction in our field! Additionally, the hypothesis for what triggers events in the USA is very clear. As an astrological practioner I read the book with a critical eye to be sure the astrological assertions were correct, and they are.
Non-Astrologers who would enjoy a fascinating view of history projected into the future thru the use of cycles should not miss this opportunity. The book is a very enjoyable read, while the underlying messages about the future are very serious.

quick read.......2004-08-26
Decent, but do what I did--read it in the store. While light-hearted and often amusing, do not go to this text if you are looking for resourceful marketing ideas and strategies. As other reviewers have noted, the analyisis is sparse. The case studies are on point, that I will admit; however, a how and why is the backbone of any rigorous work that wants to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, this text positions itself in quite another vein.
dont waste your time.......2004-07-11
This book really is tripe, from the perspective of actually learning anything about guerrilla marketing other then a series of extremely brief case studies.
The examples were good, and brought to light a few interesting ideas, but at the end of the day the author simply presented these one after the other, alongside a series of pictures of chairman mao photoshopped in.
The issue was none of these examples were followed through in anyway, and there was zero analysis.
While the author clearly made an attempt to make this book light hearted and amusing, it really didn't work, and ultimately provided very little useful information and made light of the attrocities commited by this dictator.
I simply cannot reccomend it to anyone.
Entertainment, not for learning about business.......2003-10-25
This book is fluff. Hint: There's a review of the book from Maxim Magazine (great mag, but not for business) on the back cover. Book formula is "Here's this concept. Let's spend about two pages on it, and then about two pages on an real-world example. There isn't enough time spent on the concept, or the real-world example.
I picked this book up at the airport for something to read on a short trip, without checking out any Amazon reviews on it. Learn from my mistake - do yourself a favor, pass over this book.
Up with the Reds!.......2003-06-27
If we learned anything from battling those soul destroying commies over the years it's that they have a fantastic sense of humor and a love of primary colors. Well at least one.
Now a new book you can actually read, rather than just carry around to display your leftie credentials. Stricker squeezes the great man's wisdom through the press of business advice, yielding advice that has practical value in the running-dog corporate world.
Illustrative examples of desirable behavior and the right kind of thinking are up-to-date and applicable across many business situations.
I don't know what else this Stricker fellow has done, but I say "Bravo" for this effort.
Gorillas Be Damned!!.......2003-06-26
I was incredibly surprised to find that the this wonderful book had nothing to do with large hairy apes, but rather the successes of such other GIANTS as Skyy Vodka, Ben & Jerry, AT&T, and the Amazon books(neither "guerillas" OR "gorillas").
You can not turn a page without leafing / laughing through it and having fun AND great information fall through your brain and onto your fellow traveler. This could be the World's Earliest Xmas Present.

A splendid accomplishment.........2001-10-02
This is the best and most informative book on early Islam. It is beautifully written and more sophisticated than anything that has been written on the subject so far. In contrast to the common scholarship on that period, Bamyeh stresses social science perspective over philology, and argues against the new revisionist historians by emphasizing how the origins of Islam could be understood with a close reading of the classical litereature of the period and the Qur'an. The book, I think, successfully reveals the "inner logic" of the historical period, rather than superimpose 20th century perspectives on it. This is done with remarkable sensitivity to the sources. Few books combine so well discussions of poetry, economic history, and tribal politics. This is a truly unique book in its field, and is well-worth reading.
Insightful, But Alas, Not Quite Convincing.......2001-06-07
For its style and method, this work belongs on the same shelf as postmodern or critical theory authors so trendy of late. In fact, though the book is not long, even readers already well acquainted with this kind of theorization will find the book a real slog to get through. Bamyeh's writing is often opaque or abstruse, poorly organized and makes frequent references to texts he does not adequately clarify with examples or citations. Worse still, Bamyeh has inherited none of critical theorists' caution about grand intellectual projects. His ambitions are sweeping. He sets out to write a social history of the emergence of Islam uniting, as the title suggests, psychological, economic and structural analysis of ancient Arab society. In a sense, then, he wants to outdo Marx, Durkheim and Weber. Though his approach is novel and therefore one of the attractive things about the piece, ultimately the evidentiary reed he bases this edifice on cannot bear the weight. He limits himself almost exclusively to the elaborate interpretation of a narrow selection of poetic texts and the Qur'an. The insights he makes into these texts are often surprisingly penetrating, particularly those related to the links between environment and economy and their correspondence to the psyche and religious thought. Overall, however, these insights and the texts they are based on are insufficient to support his far-flung conclusions.

Heart, Soul & Mind.......2000-01-03
This book does an excellent job of capturing the pre-Reagan debate over the American economy and distills some of the simplicity of American free market thinking. That snapshot and a beautiful turn of phrase will leave your underscoring and folding pages back. One of my economic favorite books fifteen years ago, The Economy in Mind has great historic value now.

Book Description
From Hegel to Madonna presents a genealogical survey of the discourses of negation and affirmation associated with the work of Hegel, Adorno, Deleuze, and Guattari; then, rotating from the philosophical to the political-economic axis, turns to the problem of a general economy of "commodity-fetishism." Drawing on the work of Marx and Freud, Miklitsch mobilizes a new, renewed understanding of "commodity fetishism"--what he calls the commodity-body-sign--in order to examine received notions of consumption and commodification. The aim is to envision a dialectical mode of critique, at once critical and affirmative, that can account for the cultural contradictions of late capitalism. The author also analyzes the phenomenon of Madonna Studies, reading the interest in the pop star as a sign of the academic times, a symptomatic figure not only of cultural studies in all its celebratory, cultural-populist excess but of a critical discourse responsive to postmodern culture in all its politically complex mutability.
