Happy with my book purchase.......2007-05-16
I found this book very easy to read and full of great infornation. It broke down a lot of the topics so it was easier to understand than the required GA insurance class room book. The only draw back I found is that it will not give specific information on your State. Basically, I used this book to study for my exam and I passed the first time.
I had no problems with the CD and I do strongly recommend this book as a easy to comprehend study guide.
Under No Circumstances Should You Buy This Book!.......2007-03-30
Predicated upon the glowing description of the "Exam Cram Property and Casualty Insurance License Exam" test manual, I decided to purchase it to
augment other test guides in preparation for my upcoming Property/Casualty
Insurance Producer's exam.
I have no complaint with the book itself; with the exception of no state-specific material, it seems fairly comprehensive.
I do, however, have a serious complaint about the CD-ROM Exam Simulator
which is inoperable, based upon an evaluation generated by the CD itself,
indicating that all but one of the .dll files had not been loaded.
I contacted Pearson's (the publisher's) Customer Service department, and
was given several different options, one of which was to send (1) the original receipt from Amazon (fortunately, I made copies); (2) a Xerox of the back cover, showing the ISBN number; and (3) my name, address, and
phone number.
Trustingly, I sent these data, assuming Pearson would send me a fully-loaded CD-ROM which I could use on my computer.
Naturally, they did no such thing, instead, counselling me to "return the book to Amazon for a refund or an exchange." (I informed them that the fault lay with them - not Amazon - and exchanging the book might cause me to receive another CD-ROM that was equally defective.)
My last e-mail to them was March 26th; to date, I have not heard from Pearson, and probably never will.
I told them that it was foolish to incur the ill-will of a customer who
might have given them repeat business, but evidently, the customer's sensibilities (over a defective product) are of little moment to a publishing conglomerate.
I shall keep the book (because I need it), but the memory of their bad faith shall live on, in this negative review.
Take heed from my bad experience before you consider purchasing a book
with an Exam Simulator that can't be used - nor will the company have the graciousness, or the common sense, to replace.
Not Bad, but not very specific.......2007-02-07
This should not be your only study choice. It is a general guide, state laws are not taken into account.
Good but not all states included.......2006-09-24
The book is very helpful after wasting 40 hours in a class by a doddering old man with outdated material. However, was extremely disappointed to find out my state - GA - isn't one of the states included in the practice exams on CD. Neither is Calif., Fla., Okla. or Wisc. - so be forewarned. Also don't see info on the HO 2000, which my other exam CD has several questions about.
CD HAS UNREPORTED LIMITED USE &.......2005-10-31
BESIDES THE COMPANY BEING CHEAP AND LIMITING HOW MANY TIMES YOU CAN TAKE THE TEST (FLASH CARD INGESTING) YOU ARE NOT INFORMED OF THIS, TILL YOU OPEN AND USE THE CD. IMPORTANT CHAPTERS ON HOME OWNERS AND DWELLING ARE ILLOGICAL, CLUTTERED AND CONFUSING..AS ARE A FEW OTHERS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SOURCE FOR CONVIENCE IN LEARNING HAVING BOUGHT 2 OF THE COMPANIES BOOKS...BUT YES, IT IS CHEAPLY PRICED....VALUE???

A Very Valuable Tool.......2007-04-11
I am just starting out in the insurance field as an Agent with no prior experience. During the time between making the decision to make the leap and actually landing a job, I dug every where I could looking for resources on everything that had to do with being a P&C Producer. By far, I would say this is one of the best resources for someone trying to get a good overview on how to think like one.
Of course, it is a bit cheerlead-y and full of narative, but quite honestly, it's what I found charming. I needed something that could hit home to me and motivate me to keep trying at something that seems very difficult.
I would highly recommend it to those looking for a good read on the (human) aspects of Business P&C Insurance.
Helpful Resource .......2006-09-09
Most agents whether just beginning or experienced will find something helpful in this book. Baxter provides a fairly comprehensive look at the whole process selling commercial insurance. He gives plenty of sample letters and has quite an extensive appendix.
Some of the material and methodology was slightly dated, as can be expected. But, one should be able to use his approach as a good foundation for commercial sales. Baxter included a number of practical illustrations which most people will find helpful, but can be a bit tedious.
Perhaps the best part of the book besides the sample letters is his walk through the sales process from the first meeting, through the interview, during submission, and on to a final proposal. If you want to market commercial insurance this book will help you get started.
Great for a rookie........2004-10-27
I am just getting started in my commercial P&C career. I do not even have my license yet, but feel a whole lot more comfortable talking to veterans of the industry. This is definitely not the end-all be-all of insurance books, but it is simple enough to get started with.
I started off with insurance texts and they were so dry that I could barely stay awake. After Insurance Commander I now have a grasp of the basic intricacies of the business. The only thing I would change about the book is the name (a little cheesy?).
A practical approach to selling, delivered with humor........1999-10-07
Mr. Dunbar seems to speak from real life experiences where he had to overcome all the obstacles that doom many insurance sales. His categories of customer personality types, their typical complaints or objections, and the approach to winning them over is priceless. His stories are laced with wonderful humor that turns what could be deadly dull material into fascinating reading. Experience is the best teacher, but Mr. Dunbar has done the next best thing----given a sales person some wonderful tools to avoid a bad experience.
Book Description
An in-depth look at the increasingly significant convergence between the insurance industry and the capital markets.
This important publication, by two premier financial experts, explores the unique convergence of finance and insurance. The book covers the basics of property-casualty insurance, securitizing insurance risks, looks at life insurance in the United States and ALM in insurance. It addresses the questions and concerns of investment banks, brokerage firms and the insurance/reinsurance sector itself, examines ongoing trends and issues, and how current market pressures on insurance companies do not just create challenges but actually point the way to future promising developments.

Insightful!.......2004-05-06
In Insurance from Underwriting to Derivaties, Eric Briys and Francois de Varenne, both Deutsche Bank insurance experts, have written a highly technical, albeit readable, book for their professional peers. They discuss property-casualty insurance, risk, securitizing, pricing and liabilities duration in the United States and Europe. However, it will dawn on the casual reader fairly early that there should be an "experts only" label on the book jacket. Even the basic introduction to property-casualty insurance begins with the presentation of complex mathematical models. More daunting models, charts and graphs elucidate information throughout. Insiders will appreciate this data and the extensive footnotes and references. While this may not be a book for the mid-management reader, we assure you, without risk, that its target audience - financial executives and professionals in the insurance industry - will be very glad to have it.
Good intro on insurance ALM.......2004-01-21
This is probably the best book on insurance for explaining the poor state of some ALM techniques used in insurance today and why. The authors correctly identify many falacies that actuaries have relied on and how they differ from the more advanced finance that has developed in banking ALM and the capital markets generally.
They do, however, get a bit distracted on a couple of topics, and bogged down in some formulas that I didn't think added much to the disccusion. In those moments, you know you're reading the work of university professors rather than practitioners.
They could have gone further with their ALM thinking. They could have discussed how mergers between insurance and banking would in the future highlight the differences between the current approaches to ALM, and how financial conglomerates will eventually just relegate insurance to one of many liability businesses, apply option-adjusted transfer prices to insurance products, and take the interest rate risk into consolidated positions. It will not be any more complicated than that. They allude to banking ALM, but don't really drive home any of what I thought were the logical conclusions. They were focused on insurance as stand-alone companies and did not address insurance in the context of a financial conglomerate.
Nonetheless, as stated, this is probably the best book on the market as an introduction to insurance ALM and helps dispell many myths and provides some useful history.

Insurance ALM and Derivatives.......2002-01-08
As a non insurance specialist, I was curious what the authors have to write about the convergence between the insurance industry and the capital markets. In particular the aspect of derivatives, since I'm in Equity Derivatives. The authors cover nicely the rapid change the insurance industry has faced the last couple of years. Show risk, opportunity, and support many arguments with mathematical models. Even though the authors have an outstanding academic record, the book is aktually fun reading (no boring academic book). References to other articles are extensive and the ALM Survival Toolkit in the Appendix is very well done. Here are the chapters:
1 The Basics of Property-Casualty Insurance
2 Securitizing Insurance Risks
3 Life Insurance in the United States: History of a crisis
4 ALM in Insurance: An Empirical Wander Around Europe
5 Life Insurance Pricing and the Measurement of the Duration and Liabilities
6 A Functional Approach to the Insurance Industry
7 Conclusion and Future Challenges
Appendix: The ALM Survival Toolkit
Mr Briys & Mr de Varenne have confirmend that the French are world-class in derivatives. Bravo!

the definitive guide to title insurance.......2007-02-04
This book is not just for real estate professionals. It can be used by paralegals, notary signing agents, homeowners, ... anyone and everyone who is involved in real estate transactions and who wants to gain a better understanding of what title insurance is and is not. It's an excellent text for self study, and it lends itself well for use in a classroom for continuing education courses. It can be used by the novice as well as the expert.
Each of the 6 chapters begins with a set of clearly defined learning objectives. You will know from the beginning what you will be able to do when you have completed the chapter. There is also a list that contains many key terms. Just about every conceivable term that relates to title is included in these lists. At the end of the reading there is a summary. Each chapter concludes with review questions to test your knowledge. There are also stimulating discussion topics. You can attempt to answer them on your own, or they can be used by classroom participants.
It would require too many words to say in this review what you will learn from this book. There is so much that you will learn. This is one of the most thorough treatments of title insurance that you will find. You will learn what title companies do, what title insurance is and the benefits of it, the truths about title insurance versus the many myths about it, how to read a title commitment, all of the things that can affect title, the various types of title insurance policies, the steps involved in the title insurance process leading up to the closing and issuance of a title policy, the role of the title abstractor and other key participants in the title process, and so much more. There is not a single wasted word in this textbook.
The last several pages, which make up the appendix, contain title insurance forms and samples. You will be able to see what an actual title insurance policy looks like and all of its stipulations. In addition to the key terms listed in each chapter, there is a glossary of terms at the back of the book. If you answered the review questions at the end of the chapters, you can evaluate yourself with the answers that are provided at the end of the book.
The author, Jeanine Johnson, is highly qualified to write a book on this subject, having served in many different positions and facets in the title insurance industry. If you're looking for just one book to learn about title insurance, I highly recommend this textbook.

Good for an understanding.......2002-07-30
This book is almost as old as I am, therefore, many of the P&C practices have change since. It's still a suitable piece of work for getting a general understanding.
