    Book Description

Since the 1970s, the practice of financing major private and public sector capital-intensive projects has shifted to an ever-greater reliance on private funding sources, as opposed to direct financing through the issuance of corporate or government bonds. In the 1990s, these financing practices have undergone further changes with the increasing globalization of capital markets, the growth of derivative instruments, and the rapid increase in information technology that enhances cash-management practices. Today's project financing market is increasingly using sophisticated capital market, bank and agency financing mechanisms as well as using derivative instruments for asset and liability management. Thus, financial market innovations are bringing the once separate fields of project financing and international finance more closely together. This is the first book to treat both topics as an interrelated whole, for contemporary project financing cannot be fully understood without a good working knowledge of the international financial markets that have developed the various financing techniques and funding sources being used. The book provides an in-depth description of cross-border project financing as a technique for financing capital-intensive projects, as well as an overview of certain financing and derivative instruments currently available in the global financial markets.
The first part of the book provides an overview of certain funding and derivative instruments currently used in the international financial markets, including a general overview of financial innovations that have occurred in recent decades. Topics covered include an introduction to the syndicated Euro-credit market; an overview of various marketable debt securities actively used in the international financial markets; an introduction to depositary receipt as an innovative way of raising cross-border equity capital; an elaboration of the derivative instruments most commonly used in the project financing arena, including interest rate, currency and commodity swaps; and finally an overview of banks' off-balance sheet activities as a critical driving force for the participation of banks in the international financial and derivative markets.
The second part of the book provides an in-depth analysis of project financing that concentrates on the financier's perspective. Topics covered include a general overview of the project financing industry; a step-by-step description of a typical cross-border project finance transaction; a description of the main characteristics and advantages of project financing as opposed to more traditional corporate lending practices; an overview of appraisal techniques for assessing project financing; a comprehensive analysis of the different risk management techniques used in project financing for reducing, distributing and hedging risks; and a brief overview of certain limited-resource financing schemes. The book includes a special focus on the various stages of the risk management process for project financing, elaborating on the different stages of risk identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, risk distribution and hedging and insurance. The authors also provide a comprehensive glossary of terms relating to international finance and project financing. This book will fulfill the need for an essential text on project financing as well as a professional reference guide.

    Book Description

The ins and outs of emerging markets
Emerging markets are an integral part of the global business scene. The 1997 Asian meltdown and the Russian debt default scared investors, but as the domestic market becomes more overvalued, investors have begun seeking returns elsewhere. Destined to become a standard in the field, Emerging Markets fills the niche for a balanced evaluation of the investment opportunities in the riskiest markets throughout the world. This practical guide covers what an emerging market is, why corporations and investors should or should not invest in them, and what the risks are. Jeffrey Hooke's new book is ideal for corporations and investors who are starting to look to emerging markets as ways to improve investment returns, expand into new markets, or diversify their portfolios.
Jeffrey C. Hooke (Chevy Chase, MD) is Managing Director of Hooke Associates, LLC, an investment banking firm. He was formerly director of Emerging Markets Partnership, a $4 billion fund focusing on emerging markets, and senior investment officer of the World Bank Group.

5 out of 5 stars realistic guide to the developing world.......2002-05-20

The book provides a hard hitting summary of both the risks and opportunities of the developing countirs. It also included a lot of solutions to the problems one faces. I liked the way in which it addressed issues from an operating company, equity investor's, and lender's perspectives. Nobody else does that. The anecdotes on various regions were entertaining.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-06-27

Former investment banker Jeffrey C. Hooke now carries out financial deals in the developing world. He describes the potential for doing business or investing in the world's 156 emerging markets. Hooke is realistic about the great risks - such as unstable governments in impoverished countries - but he highlights future potential. His book is a solidly researched and clearly written guide to assessing the business climate and deciding what types of products make the most sense in different developing countries. After an overview of the nature of emerging markets, why companies want to participate in or avoid these markets, and how to invest and make loans there, he looks at particular markets in Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. We [...] recommend this worthy book to those considering working or investing in emerging markets, but academics or readers interested in how business is conducted in foreign places may also be intrigued.

    J. Mark Mobius is the globetrotting manager of emerging-markets portfolios for the Templeton group of mutual funds. He has gained celebrity for his legendary success in uncovering investment opportunities in obscure corners of the world--for that and for his shaved head. In Mobius on Emerging Markets, he gracefully describes the demographic, technological, and ideological trends that have been accelerating growth in what was once known as the Third World. Mobius provides country-by-country reviews of many emerging markets and explores various methods of evaluating both markets and individual stocks. His book is a worthwhile, sober introduction to one of the investment world's most exciting topics. --Barry Mitzman

2 out of 5 stars Deadly dull, with little insights.......2003-08-30

I guess I'm in the minority here. I was extremely dissapointed with this book. The writing is plodding, and I kept waiting for some good war stories, insights, or ideas and never got them.

Sure, there are words on the page, so he must be saying something. It wasn't anything particularly new, original or really useful. Or memorable for that matter. He does include some personal stories, but they elicit a shoulder shrugging, "So what?".

    Invest your money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars More interesting in the context of increasing globalization.......2001-07-23

Mobius is certainly a guru for people like me who do analysis on emerging markets. People were questioning the viability of emerging markets investing as an asset class just a couple of years ago due to contrast between the boom of US equity market and the gloomy performance of MSCI. Doubts also come from the debate on the "high alpha or just high beta". Some even go further to say that "either the companies (in emerging markets) have been integrated into global markets or the companies are not worthy at taking a look at all". So what's the virtue of investment market as an asset class? Does it matter? What kind of investors are the fit for this asset class? How?

I am a firm believer in what Charles Ellis as well as David Swensen have said about the alternative investments philosphy. In "winning the loser's game", Ellis eloquently, humorously while ruthlessly concluded that "it is harder and harder to beat the market" for market is yourself or people like yourself. It is a pity that he didn't talk about emerging markets. Mobius went on to explore the markets to share the knowledge on this young while dynamite asset class. It is still too early to draw a conclusion on this-we'll wait and see. Nevertheless, It is great that somebody is there waving to you and say "hay, you might want to try this and it is fine".

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting & Enlightening Insight to Emerging Markets.......1998-12-22

Mobius on Emerging Markets demonstrates that the author is more than just a fashion guru. The book is a well-written and compelling read; I read nearly all the 364 pages in one day. It is logically structured and gives the reader an enlightening introduction to emerging markets; this is supported with clear graphical and tabulated statistics.

The book is divided into three Parts:

    1) Emerging Markets

Origins of Emerging Markets Macro Economic Trends in Emerging Markets

    2) Country Reviews

Emerging Market Overview (Africa, Asia, Latin America, Middle East, Southern Europe)

    3) Investment

Investment Strategies and Investments Evaluating Stock Picks Stock Exchange Characteristics Risks My View on Emerging Markets

Although I was initially sceptical of Mark Mobius I must thoroughly recommend this book and congratulate Mark Mobius on his well-deserved success.

If you are considering investing in emerging markets `Mobius on Emerging Markets' is his best advertisement yet.

      Book Description

What impact do international economic inputs have on human rights in Third World nations? William Meyer explores the effects of direct investment by U.S. multinational corporations, economic and military aid, and MNC manufacturing plants. He examines the international political economy of human rights at both the national and the international levels. Case studies are combined with quantitative studies that use aggregate cross-national data. Theories that link MNCs to human rights are subjected to empirical testing. As Meyer illustrates, at the national level, human rights violations are associated with US MNCs in Chile, Honduras, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. MNCs have been especially guilty of violating labor rights, particularly through their reliance on sweatshops. MNCs have also been responsible for widespread pollution and environmental degradation. At a broader international level, increased investment by MNCs tends to go along with human rights improvements in the Third World as a whole. Meyer shows that there is a broad positive relationship between direct investment by MNCs and broader political rights and improved living standards. Aggregate data are also analyzed for human rights as compared to U.S. economic and military aid. Economic aid is found to be associated with improved civil-political rights and improved socioeconomic rights. Military aid, by contrast, is associated with declining levels of civil rights and with lower levels of social welfare.

      Book Description

In this work, Professors Stopford and Strange explore the mutual interdependence of states and firms. They show how global structural changes often impel governments to seek the cooperation of managers of multinational enterprises, but within the constraints of each country's economic resources, social structures and history. Using research into the experience of over fifty multinationals and one hundred investment projects in Brazil, Malaysia and Kenya, the authors develop a matrix of agendas. They present the impact on projects of the multiple factors affecting the bargaining relationships between the government and the foreign firm at different times and in a variety of economic sectors.

5 out of 5 stars Bargains between states and firms.......2006-08-06

In this book, Susan Strange (with John Stopford)develops the relational power model that she introduces in "States and Markets". The book introduces the firm as a player in diplomacy and argues that transnational corporation can exercise the type of relational power that the state exercises.
The book is a foundation to Strange's "The Retreat of the State" and a read of all three books, pluse Roger Tooze's anthology of Strange's work "States and Authorities" provides an excellent introduction to International Political Economy as seen from a distinctly European perspective and with the clarity (and quirkiness) provided by the late Susan Strange.

          Book Description

Is foreign direct investment good for development? Moving beyond the findings of his previous book Does Foreign Direct Investment Promote Development? (CGD and IIE, 2005), Theodore H. Moran presents surprisingly good--and startlingly bad--news. The good news highlights how foreign direct investment can make a contribution to development significantly more powerful and more varied than conventional measurements indicate. The bad news reveals that foreign direct investment can also distort host economies and polities with consequences substantially more adverse than critics and cynics have imagined.

This book rigorously examines the principal controversies and debates about FDI in manufacturing and assembly, extractive industries, and infrastructure, in light of new evidence and analysis. Written in engaging prose, it identifies how developed and developing countries, multilateral lending agencies, and civil society can work in concert to harness foreign direct investment to promote the growth and welfare of developing countries.

From Pat Buchanan to Ralph Nader, America's right and left are united in their conviction that free trade is evil. They are joined by most trade unions, environmentalists, and members of Congress (as shown by their refusal to let President Clinton negotiate wider free-trade agreements). Yet the growth of world trade is at least partly responsible for the American economy's robust good health and for the rise of living standards worldwide. From Third World to World Class is an excellent source of intellectual ammunition to counter the rising tide of protectionism. Peter Marber, a New York money manager specializing in emerging markets, has written a reasoned celebration of world capitalism's benign effects. One chapter title sums up his optimism: "How Multinationals Are Helping the Poor Get Richer and the Rich Stay Rich." Marber believes that rich nations need not fear low-wage competitors, not so long as the rich nations educate their workforces. Rising Third World economies will become lucrative markets for Western technology, entertainment, services, and a host of consumer brands. That is, if protectionism does not halt the virtuous cycle that is raising billions of people out of poverty. --Barry Mitzman

          Book Description

From the Americas to Asia, rapid growth and economic transformation are creating a wide array of new business opportunities-for multinational corporations and individual investors alike. But the rise of the developing world is also challenging long-held beliefs that the industrialized nations would call all the shots. In this highly original analysis of developing nations, investment, and global business expansion - written against the backdrop of financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America - Peter Marber identifies the risks and rewards of investing in emerging markets, and reveals new sources of conflict as value systems clash in a game of global economic integration where there will inevitably be financial losers, as well as winners.

Marber offers some considerable insight into the growing magnitude of emerging markets in the global economy, redressing the balance of the plethora of protectionist literature that would rather see Third World remain third. What is particularly refreshing about his approach is that he embraces the negative sentiment, potential risks, and shortcomings of emerging markets investing, and offers practical and forthright advice on how to make it work.

The opportunities and road blocks to achieve world class are defined clearly not only for first world countries but also for the developing ones. His book is a great introduction to the subject. A well researched book with great sources of information for college students and proffesionals that want to participate in these markets. A great contribution to the field of emerging markets, especially, if you take in consideration that there are not that many books covering this matter. Not many professionals on this field are able to write in such entertaining way.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Background Material for Emerging Markets Investors.......1999-09-09

I found this well researched book from the author's "Emerging Markets Insider" column on WORLDLYINVESTOR.COM (also highly recommended). Most investors have forgotten these markets in recent years due to crises in Asia, Russia, and Latin America. Having been born in an "emerging market" (South Africa), it is interesting to see a "First Worlder's" perspective. Mr. Marber rightly has pointed out that these are important markets (many up more than 50% this year), and anyone interested in solid background material should find this book useful. His weekly web pieces on emerging market stocks are very timely and I found his book complimentary to those articles. Yes, the Dow Jones and Nasdaq have been soaring. But many emerging markets have outperformed them this year and over time. There are too few books that cover these markets well, and this is one of the better examples I have read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guide for real world managers in emerging markets.......2006-06-29

Highly recomended for "western" managers and anyone interested as to how emerging markets really work, how important they are in the scheme of things and the magnitude of the opportunity - whether from a multinational perspective or a start-up operation. Very well written and well- rounded, it covers the functional areas - like manufacturing and distribution and HR. It covers the cross-functional areas such as risk, corruption and cultural interfaces. Finally it takes a top-down and botom up approach. Most importantly it's not boring! A lively read. Hat's off to Pacek and Thorniley.
