History of Economic Analysis: With a New Introduction
Joseph A. Schumpeter Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195105591 |
Book Description
At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter--one of the great economists of the first half of the 20th century--was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. A complete history of efforts to understand the subject of economics from ancient Greece to the present, this book is an important contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics. Although never fully completed, it has gained recognition as a modern classic due to its broad scope and original examination of significant historical events. Complete with a new introduction by Mark Perlman, who outlines the structure of the book and puts Schumpeters work into current perspective, History of Economic Analysis remains a reflection of Schumpeters diverse interests in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. Major topics include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences, and the sociology of economics; economic writings from Plato and Aristotle up through the time of Adam Smith, including the medieval scholastics and natural-law philosophers; the work of Malthus, Mill, Ricardo, Marx, and the important European economists; the history, sociology, psychology, and economics of the period 1879-1914; and modern economic developments. Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science, and this lucid and insightful volume reflects that perception, creating a work that is of major importance to the history of economics.Customer Reviews:

The beginnings of economic concepts in full detail.......2003-11-11
He is sometimes difficult to follow, not helped by the many and extensive footnotes he appends the book with, and by the many quotations he does in foreign languages, which he usually do not translate, be it in ancient Greek, Latin , French or German. Also , the book was unfinished in his lifetime and had to be edited by his wife, who was also deceased before the full completion of the giantic task. Even so, the book has some 1.300 pages and covers the full range of all the relevant economic thougth until the time of its publication.
A warning sign of caution must be addressed to the non-professional readers not not fully interested in the magnitude of such a scope, that is, of addressing the formative ideas of each and every important concept in economic analisys in a so complete way. This can be an overkill for you. But if you are interested in Medieval thought, the concepts exposed by , for instance, Saint Thomas and many others, this is a very good reading. Enjoy it
Complex and Sophisticated History of Economic Theory.......2000-11-18
For a reader well-grounded in economic theory and history, I am sure that this is a bible; but for a curious reader interested in the history of economics (in a more political as opposed to theoretical perspective) this book may not be right. Highly footnoted and not very smooth writing, as well as obscure references to economists and theories results in a history that is very demanding of the reader. If you are looking for an economic history text that reads like From Dawn to Decadence you may be seriously disappointed, as I had been, but if you are a serious student of economics and are willing to spend the time to deliberate over Schumpeter's words then History of Economic Analysis is right for you.

New Ideas from Dead Economists: An Introduction to Modern Economic Thought

Over 150 years ago, Scottish essayist Thomas Carlyle dubbed economics the "dismal science." But it certainly doesn't seem that way in the skillful hands of Todd G. Buchholz, author of New Ideas from Dead Economists. In this revised edition of a book first published in 1989, economics is accessible, relevant, and fascinating. It's even fun--for example, when he uses the cast of Gilligan's Island and Henny Youngman jokes to explain complex economic theories. "Why not have the last laugh on Carlyle by using the dead economists themselves to reverse their bad reputations and to teach the lessons they left to us?"Buchholz surveys and critiques economic thought from Adam Smith's invisible hand of the 18th century to the depression-fighting ideas of the Keynesians and money-supply concepts of the 20th-century monetarists. He also relates classic economic principles to such modern-day events as the fall of communism, the Asian financial meltdown, and global warming. Buchholz includes plenty of anecdotes about the lives of the great economists: Karl Marx, for instance, was an unkempt slob; David Ricardo, the early-19th-century English politician and economist, was among the rare economists to get rich trading stocks; and Maynard Keynes was so homely his friends called him "Snout." Here's a lively and authoritative read for those interested in the past, present, and future of economics. --Dan Ring

Featuring brand new sections on the remarkable shifts in the world economy, this economic study is a relevant, entertaining, and fascinating guide for those seeking both a solid lesson on the development of economic theory throughout the past two hundred years and a balanced perspective of our current economic state on the brink of the millennium. By applying age-old economic theories to contemporary issues, Todd Buchholz helps readers to see how the thoughts and writings of the great economists of the past have vital relevance to the dilemmas affecting all our lives today.Customer Reviews:

Dave Ulrich wants human-resources managers to start doing "the real work" of companies: improving customer service and increasing shareholder value. Ulrich, a business professor at the University of Michigan, is editor of Delivering Results, a collection of 15 Harvard Business Review articles on managing human resources. In the lead essay, "A New Mandate for Human Resources," Ulrich argues that many companies pigeonhole human-resources managers as "incompetent, value-sapping support staff" useful only for shuffling paperwork and dealing with red tape. "It's time to destroy the stereotype and unleash HR's full potential," Ulrich writes. HR should be focused on results--for example, by executing strategy and developing better ways to manage benefits and information, he says. The articles in this book are aimed at helping HR pros excel at work. "Good Communication That Blocks Learning," authored by Chris Argyris, says that to be truly creative, managers and employees must start asking tougher questions of each other and worry less about politics. "Changing the Way We Change," written by Richard Pascale, Mark Millemann, and Linda Gioja, examines successful turnarounds at Sears, Shell, and the U.S. Army. In "Opening the Books," John Case writes that employees are more motivated if management shares financial goals and income statements. The book also includes Harvard Business classics like "The Core Competence of the Corporation" by C.K. Prahalad and Gary Hamel and "What is Strategy?" by Michael Porter. HR professionals, company executives, and people interested in business management will enjoy this book and profit from it. --Dan Ring
Book Description
This hardcover edition is available only in a premium, full-cloth binding. It will not ship with a dust jacket.
The profession of human resources is at a crossroads. Although a small but increasingly vocal faction is questioning both the value and the need for HR, in fact, HR has never been more necessary. The challenges facing today's businesses demand speed, responsiveness, learning, and teamwork-in short, organizational capabilities. And HR is uniquely positioned to deliver organizational capabilities, but only if it is willing to abandon many of its traditional functions, assume an entirely new role, and develop a new agenda.
Delivering Results collects some of the best articles from the Harvard Business Review and creates a resource that addresses the need for HR to re-invent itself as a strategic player capable of generating organizational capabilities. With an introduction from Dave Ulrich, author of the bestselling Human Resource Champions, this collection examines the new skills, roles, and purpose that HR must cultivate if it is to add value. The goal of this timely Harvard Business Review book is to define a new era in management, one in which HR is no longer considered a bureaucratic department devoted to staffing, policy, and compensation, but is looked to as a partner in shaping and directing strategic outcomes.
The contributions in provide an enlightening look at issues such as change, strategic unity, innovation, and intellectual capital, revealing how HR must take a leadership role in contributing to these initiatives. The articles are organized around four categories-Delivering Core Capabilities, Creating Strategic Clarity, Making Change Happen, and Creating Intellectual Capital-to help HR professionals answer questions such as: * How do we fight and win the war for talent? * How do we create value? * How do we profitably grow our business? * How do we facilitate both individual and organizational learning? For the work of HR to directly contribute to employee, customer, and shareholder value, it must guide the development of organizational capabilities that turn strategy into action. Delivering Results reveals the power of HR strategies to influence not just individual, but company performance, offering actionable strategies that yield results from the factory line to the boardroom. A Harvard Business Review Book.

A major shift in thinking from doables to deliverables.......2001-10-01
In this context, Dave Ulrich says that while few disagree that HR practices, professionals, and departments should refocus on deliverables or results, discussions have just begun as to what constitutes HR results. And, according to him, emerging questions for HR include the following:
1. What are HR results?
* HR results as firm performance
* HR results as capabilities
2. What capabilities may be defined as HR results?
* Creating strategic clarity: be a strategic partner
* Making change happen: be a change agent
* Creating intellectual capital: be an employee champion
3. How does a results focus shift HR responsibility, practices, departments, and professionals?
Finally, he says that this antology provides readers with a clear point of view on HR results and offers specific definitions and examples of those results.
Highly recommended.
Delivering Results - A New Mandate for HR Professionals.......2000-06-23
This book is organized into 4 main sections... 1. Delivering Core Capabilities 2. Creating Strategic Clarity: Becoming a strategic partner 3. Making Change Happen: Becoming a change agent 4. Creating Intellectual Capital: Becoming an employee champion
These four sections summarize Ulrich's views on the ever chaning role of Human Resources in not only today's workplace, but tomorrow's.
I recommend this book to any business professional seeking to better understand how employees can better reach their potential, as well as to any HR professional seeking to expand his or her vision of what the profession is capable of accomplishing.

The Jade Garden: New and Notable Plants from Asia
Peter Wharton , Brent Hine , and Douglas Justice Manufacturer: Timber Press, Incorporated ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0881927058 |
Book Description
The Jade Garden is an authoritative guide to 130 of the most fascinating yet little-known ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials from "the green mantle" of Asia. Based on detailed research and observation at one of the largest and oldest collections of Asian plants in North America, the subjects of this book were chosen for their superior garden qualities, their rarity in everyday horticulture, and their commercial availability. From an extraordinary, nearly black geranium with reflexed petals, to a ground-creeping honeysuckle with bicolored flowers and blue berries, gardeners are sure to find something new and exciting in these pages. Although plants included are from the "cutting edge" of plant exploration and discovery, the authors have included only those selections that have undergone thorough evaluation at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden for hardiness and garden appeal. In addition, the authors have taken special care to exclude potentially invasive plants, allowing readers to be confident that any selection from the book will be an environmentally responsible one. With many of its plants appearing in a garden book for the first time, The Jade Garden is certain to be a groundbreaking horticultural event.

Essay on the Nature of Commerce in General
Richard Cantillon , and a new introduction by Anthony Brewer Manufacturer: Transaction Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0765804999 |
Book Description
Richard Cantillon is one of the key figures in the early history of economics. He was certainly not the first to think about economic problems, but he was the first to have clear insight into the way the economy functions as a system. He was arguably the first to structure a theory of how the economy works. In this sense he could be called the first real economist. Today, his ideas on population, determination of prices, wages and interest, the role of the entrepreneur, banking, and the influence of money supply on the economy are increasingly quoted and appreciated. This is a translation of the ssai sur la nature du commerce en gnral his only surviving work. It was circulated in manuscript form for many years after his death and was extremely influential, albeit not well known, at least throughout the eighteenth century. Essays on the Nature of Commerce in General shaped the development of economics through its formative influence on Franois Quesnay and Adam Smith. It is a cornerstone upon which all subsequent economic theory has been built.
Transaction is proud to breathe new life into this classic work as part of its distinguished series in economic theory and history. In his new introduction, Anthony Brewer showcases Cantillon, the prophetic thinker, for a new generation of readers. This volume's broad-based appeal and great cultural import can no longer afford to be overlooked. Students of economic theory, intellectual historians, and sociologists will find this volume indispensable.

Introduction to Stochastic Calculus for Finance: A New Didactic Approach (Lecture Notes in Economics and Mathematical Systems)
Dieter Sondermann Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540348360 |
Book Description
The large number of already available textbooks on stochastic calculus with specific applications to finance requires a justification for another contribution to this subject. The justifcation is mainly pedagogical. These lecture notes start with an elementary approach to stochastic calculus due to Föllmer, who showed that one can develop Ito's calculus "pathwise" as an exercise in real analysis. The text opens to students interested in finance a quick (but by no means "dirty") road to the tools required for advanced finance in continuous time, including option pricing by martingale methods, term structure models in a HJM-framework and the Libor market model. The reader is supposed only to be familiar with elementary real analysis (e.g. Taylor's Theorem) and basic probability theory. The text is also useful for mathematicians interested in the methods of modern mathematical finance without prior knowledge of advanced stochastic analysis.
