Not impressed.......2007-10-03
I am not sure whether my negative perception of this book arises more from my disliking the book or the subject matter, but I felt like I had trouble learning from it as well as I have from other textbooks. I generally rely on the text to clarify anything I missed from a professor's lecture, but this one was not that helpful for me. I'm sure this is related to the fact that I am absolutely horrible at accounting, but I was hoping that the textbook could save me and teach me whatever I was missing in class... no such luck!
Good starting book for Managerial Accounting.......2007-02-26
Clearly written. Although it assumes some basic knowledge about accounting, the writing technique is such that there is very little background knowledge that you have to go refresh yourself with in order to make sense of the new information. For a novice at accounting like me, this was easy to understand, with good examples and illustrations.
It is really useful in real business world!!.......2006-11-16
I am a MBA candidate in US and will return to Japan next year.
My background is engineer in Japanese manufacturing company.
Even now, this textbook teaches us powerful tools and especially in factory accounting. The knowledge for budgeting and how to evaluate it will help me in the future.
I will bring this book back to Japan and try to use it in the real world!!
Excellent book.......2006-10-11
The writing may not be perfect, but it's still a great textbook, probably the best you can find.
After all, there is a reason that so many colleges use this book. You will learn a great deal whether you use this book for a class or for your own study.
Poorly written.......2006-02-15
This is a poorly written textbook; rambling and fragmented information is presented on a piecemeal basis rather than in a clear, concise and well-organized manner. Important information belonging to one subject-matter chapter, is often presented as "aside" information in other chapters on wholly different subjects. This textbook appears to have been written by an author who forgot to take his ADHD medication. This "substandard" quality has become common place with this particular publishing company, Prentice Hall, to include its many subsidiaries (Pearson, Thompson, Southwestern, etc.), to the detriment of the education system.
Book Description
This text remains the only text in the market that presents a balance of financial theory and applications. The authors maintain the same four goals as with the first edition: helping learners to make good financial decisions, providing a solid text for the introductory MBA course, motivating learners by demonstrating finance is relevant and interesting, and presenting the material clearly.

First, they should learn to write sentences!.......2007-08-22
This book falls into the category of professors who know the material, but just can't communicate it. I can tell it was written on a schedule...sloppy wording, confusing definitions, and unintuitive examples and explanations. This information isn't that tough to understand...poor writing makes it so.
Here's a paragraph defining WACC, p.11.
Financial managers also must make finance decisions relating to how to finance the firm. In particular, what mix of debt and equity should be used, and what specific types of debt and equity should be issued? Also, what percentage of current earnings should be retained and reinvested rather than paid out as dividends? Along with these financing decisions, the general level of interest rates in the economy, the risk of the firm's operations, and stock market investors' overall attitude toward risk determine the rate of return that is required to satisfy a firm's investors. This is a return from investors' perspectives, but it is a cost from the company's point of view. Therefore, it is called the weighted average cost of capital (WACC).
As in the rest of the book, too many words, no directness or clarity.
Don't buy this book for self-study; you'll spend most of your time trying to decipher the obfuscating sentences.
finance student.......2007-07-09
I felt that the book was good. Some of the concepts could have been explained in better detail. I notice that on a lot of the chapters the authors repeated some of the material more than once. Some chapters need more practice problems like in chapter 5. This book explains the basic and fundamental concepts good but does not explained the difficult concepts good. Overall, this book was good.
Not a good book to learn from.......2007-06-01
This book's explanations were poor at best. It utilized undefined terms, and had a weak glossary/index.
Explanations of financial formulas were sorely lacking, and the organization of these formulas so that one could ever find them wasn't even attempted.
Not recommended.
Marcel Douven Netherlands.......2007-04-15
We used this "Brigham" for the course financial management, MBA programm.
The book gives a good overview and analysis of the main issues and is rather easy to understand and pleasant to read. You sould be aware that some issues are seen through the American glasses. Very usefull, I warmly recommend it.
Dissenting Opinion.......2007-02-27
Like many of the other reviewers, this text was required for my MBA program. As intro books go, I think that this book is much more advanced then what many reviewers have indicated.
Plus, my terms are 8 weeks long and this textbook is way, way too long for such a short time period. My school should adopt a textbook that is shorter in length. The book has over 25 long chapters. We barely studied half that before the term came to an end.
I felt that the layout of the text was not great. By this I mean, it would have been very helpful if, like other textbooks, the publishers/authors defined terms and concepts in the margins. Often times, the authors failed to provide clear definitions in the narrative forcing you to go to the glossary.
Next point, the authors present the material in long dense paragraphs which can be a challenge to get through. They need to break things up a bit more and interject more solved problems and examples.
I found this text more "academic" in nature and not something I could use as a reference on the job. I am looking for the practical and not the theory.
Bottomline, I would rather use a textbook that gets to the point faster, has more worked out problems, and is more visually inviting so to speak. For example, I have an old edition of Gitman's "Financial Management" and I like it much better then this textbook. The study guide that goes with Gitman's book is really good as well.
Meanwhile, I am debating whether to keep this text as reference or not.
Book Description
Principles of Corporate Finance is the worldwide leading text that describes the theory and practice of corporate finance. Throughout the book the authors show how managers use financial theory to solve practical problems and as a way of learning how to respond to change by showing not just how but why companies and management act as they do. The text is comprehensive, authoritative, and modern and yet the material is presented at a common sense level. The discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor for which the book is well known and highly regarded. This text is a valued reference for thousands of practicing financial managers. Richard A. Brealey and Stewart C. Myers welcome Franklin Allen as a new coauthor to this Eighth Edition. Sometimes the addition of a new coauthor means that one of the existing authors proposes to take a back seat. That is not the case with this team. Dr. Allen’s addition represents a genuine increase in capacity and brings fresh expertise and ideas to an already tremendously successful textbook and partnership.

Just perfect........2007-09-06
Although I did not pass the exam that I took. The problem was with the exam not the book. This is an excellent book with lot of work done to ensure that the book is perfect.
The presentations available online with this book have a few mistakes.
Not great for the beginner.......2007-07-17
This book is not very clear in its explanations and does not have too many worked examples. Not sure why my MBA school prescribes this. I recommend reading Fundamentals of Corporate Finance Standard Edition by Stephen Ross, Randolph Westerfield.
Lacking Full Explanations.......2007-06-07
This book leaves me with more questions about finance than I have answers. Who do the authors think they are writing for? It surely is not the beginner MBA student. It seems like words are expensive because they do not fully or even partially explain concepts. Finance is difficult but it should not be impossible. I should not have to read and reread to figure out what the heck they are talking about. Maybe they should serve as advisors to this text and let someone who knows how to write actually write the book. These guys may be leaders and brillant but they are poor communicators. I'm not thrilled with my professor either. Is he a cheerleader or a teacher?
Good introductory finance book.......2007-04-11
This is an easy to ready comprehensive introduction to basic finance concepts. I would not recommend it to finance majors but I consider it a good choice for general MBA or other students that do not have a stong quantitative finance background.
Comprehensive text - you get your money's worth.......2007-01-09
I got this book for my Intro to Corp Finance class. The professor was aweful, but the book got me through the class. There are several other finance classes that use the same text, so for once I feel like I'll get my money's worth out of a textbook.
Book Description
The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health.
Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. "Don't even consider keeping up with the Joneses," Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. "They're broke!"
The Total Money Makeover isn't theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you.

Not rocket science, but then again, most things worth doing aren't.......2007-10-04
If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to crawl out from under your financial rock, get control, and win with money, this is your book. Dave is a fantastic communicator, and part of that is his willingness to tell it like it is. If it's stupid, he calls it stupid; but always with the heart to see people change their lives for the better. Dave has said over and over that success with finances is only 20% knowledge, but 80% behavior. This book covers the basics of the head knowledge, but hopefully Dave's insights and the numerous personal narratives from real people who have implemented the plan and are winning with money will inspire you to change your behavior. If you need more convincing, just find his radio show or Web site and listen to how he helps people change their lives for the better.
great gift for newlyweds!.......2007-10-03
Bill Ramsey's book is our gift of choice for newlyweds. Finances are often a source of stress in marriage. If they'll read this book and put the principles into practice, it will help prevent a lot of unnecessary heartache.

Are You Drowning in Debt and Stressed Out of Your Mind?.......2007-09-25

Sure, the concepts in the book aren't new. But when you are in debt and need help, his crystal clear "baby steps" help you see that there is a way out of your mess. You realize that there are things you can start doing immediately to improve your situation.
The book is easy to read and has several stories of people who turned their desperate financial situations around. After reading this you will have a clear idea of the steps you need to take.

Book Description
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind reveals the missing link between wanting success and achieving it!
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get rich easily, while others are destined for a life of financial struggle? Is the difference found in their education, intelligence, skills, timing, work habits, contacts, luck, or their choice of jobs, businesses, or investments?
The shocking answer is: None of the above!
In his groundbreaking Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Eker states: "Give me five minutes, and I can predict your financial future for the rest of your life!" Eker does this by identifying your "money and success blueprint." We all have a personal money blueprint ingrained in our subconscious minds, and it is this blueprint, more than anything, that will determine our financial lives. You can know everything about marketing, sales, negotiations, stocks, real estate, and the world of finance, but if your money blueprint is not set for a high level of success, you will never have a lot of money—and if somehow you do, you will most likely lose it! The good news is that now you can actually reset your money blueprint to create natural and automatic success.
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is two books in one. Part I explains how your money blueprint works. Through Eker's rare combination of street smarts, humor, and heart, you will learn how your childhood influences have shaped your financial destiny. You will also learn how to identify your own money blueprint and "revise" it to not only create success but, more important, to keep and continually grow it.
In Part II you will be introduced to seventeen "Wealth Files," which describe exactly how rich people think and act differently than most poor and middle-class people. Each Wealth File includes action steps for you to practice in the real world in order to dramatically increase your income and accumulate wealth.
If you are not doing as well financially as you would like, you will have to change your money blueprint. Unfortunately your current money blueprint will tend to stay with you for the rest of your life, unless you identify and revise it, and that's exactly what you will do with the help of this extraordinary book. According to T. Harv Eker, it's simple. If you think like rich people think and do what rich people do, chances are you'll get rich too!

Highly recommended!.......2007-10-06
T. Harv Eker has written an excellent book that makes you look into yourself to help identify what is holding you back from achieving your financial goals. In reading this book, you challenge your assumptions about yourself and he makes you think if you are truly willing to do what it takes to be rich. Extremely worthwhile and I will pursue additional materials and opportunities to hear Mr. Eker speak.
Mind Over Matter.......2007-10-01
The key to achieving any goal is to mentally determine that it can be done and that you will accomplish it. This book will help you develop the mentality that will increase your odds of gaining wealth. That quest starts out with a bit of house cleaning. The author first helps you to unlearn all of the bad habits that are holding you back financially. After that foundation is laid, he goes on to layout his philosophies the mind set needed to get rich.
I was uncomfortable with his references to the "universe." He seems to use this term in place of God. I've never heard people speak in that way. Otherwise it is a great read.
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind .......2007-09-28
Harv Eker has hit the "nail on the head" with this exciting, upbeat, and challenging "How to" for those of us that want to break out of the poor mentality. I have read many books on this subject but Harv brings new insights into a well writen about arena. He has "passion" about his ideas and suggestions for mastering the inner game of Wealth. My wife and I have both read this book and go back and re-read many time. Good STUFF!!
Very Interesting.......2007-09-19
This book is not about how to invest in the market or any get rich quick scheme. It is a holistic approach to how successful people think and do. Although the topic is about having money, it first questions how you feel about having money. The first part is quite interesting as it gives various examples of how, through conditioning, we have opinions which have been formed at an early age, about money. There are NLP ties throughout this book.
Then Eker introduces 17 "wealth files" which each have various strategies, illustrations and comparisons for those that earn money and those who don't. The message is still clear that you must go and take action as nothing is going to simply fall into your lap. That being said, it begins with the mindset first.
This book is well written, and is a fast read. It is also equipped with many great one liner's, metaphors and stories.

You get to say how it will go..........2007-09-11
This is an awesome read for anyone. It is especially poignant for those who know they have what it takes to make it big; but continue to not master whatever it is that they need to get there. These ideas and concepts can be applied to life; not just creating wealth. T. Harve Eker does a great job of relating to his audience in easy going everyday terminology.
I have been quoting this book since the very first day I listen to the CD. This is a well done first rate book; buy it for your Dad, your Mom, your Brother, Sister; anyone that you care about.

Business Law-Smith and Roberson.......2003-10-05
This book is well-organized and written. It covers the major
subject areas for the CPA exam thoroughly. There is more than
adequate treatment in the areas of contract law, sales
transactions, agency, partnerships, corporate formation and
the minor subject areas of the CPA examination. There is good
coverage of legal foundations with ample exercises to develop
the legal concepts presented. This work should be retained for
use as a reference guide. In addition, it is easy to read and understand.
Concise, and usually accurate, with good examples.......1998-09-06
A good overview of US law. There are issues which are matters of opinion and not explained well enough (ex. ethics), and perhaps needn't be addressed at all in a law book. The examples and the references make it a worthy purchase overall.

To Weather Economic Storms.......2007-10-06
I heard a radio interview with Peter Schiff and was very impressed with what he had to say, so much so that I purchased two copies of "Crash Proof", one for me and one for my son. I am advising my son to discuss Mr. Schiff's investment recommendations with his certified financial planner after he finishes the book.
this book is a buy........2007-10-06
I enjoyed the book. everyone who is worried about the economic trend in the US should read this book. I is a buy because it's a book that one can keep for future reference.
Crash Proof if you have the assets!.......2007-10-05
My wife and I read this and found it very helpful. It makes sense. However, our assets only amount to 40K. We are retired and all of our income is from SS and a pension in dollars. There is nothing we can do about this. We moved almost all of our assets out of dollars.
If and when the US economy collapses, we will be hurt badly even if our 40K remains solid.
Quarterlife Finance says, "Read it with a grain of salt.".......2007-10-03
Consider this scenario: The domestic manufacturing sector is all but gone. Housing prices crash and billions of dollars of unrealized equity evaporate almost overnight. Consumer spending drops and the US service economy, driven by consumer spending and propped up by foreign investment and trade deficits, crashes. Foreign investors see the weakness and stop buying dollar denominated assets, furthering the dollar's free-fall. Our interest rates shoot skyward, and at the same time we suffer hyperinflation. This catastrophic chain of events leads to a tremendous depression that leaves millions of Americans penniless and unemployed.
That is just one of the possible scenarios foreseen by Schiff and Downes in their 2007 book Crash Proof: How to Profit From the Coming Economic Collapse (Lynn Sonberg Books). This book makes for an interesting read, though one to be taken with a grain of salt. The book combines dire doom-and-gloom predictions with a healthy dose of mistrust for the government. If the authors were not so absolutely correct about many of the points in the book, it wouldn't deserve a second look. The authors' predictions are proving valid with each day that goes by, though, so I think this book is worth reading.
The book spends the first seven chapters discussing why the US economy is about to collapse. The author delves into the shift from a manufacturing to a service economy and the possible consequences. He examines inflation and convincingly explains why he believes that the government manipulates inflation indicators to hide the truth. He predicts a sharp decline in the dollar for many reasons, including the possibility that the dollar may no longer be the world's reserve currency after a few years.
He goes on to consider the chaos that has affected the stock market in recent years, and how the tech bubble never really burst but rather shifted into housing. He predicts a decline in housing on par with or greater than the tech crash at the beginning of this decade. He predicts that the same dollars will go towards creating a commodity bubble and result in even greater inflation. Before giving us his answer to these problems, he caps his analysis with a coup de grace - the problem of debt in the US. The author is very concerned about the levels of consumer debt, lack of home equity, and US government debt that threaten to overwhelm both US citizens and the economy as a whole.
Finally, we are given the answer to this impending crisis in three simple steps: move most of your investment dollars into foreign dividend-paying stocks and gold, and hold a reserve of liquidity (preferably in foreign currency) to allow you to take advantage of investment opportunities as the domestic economy comes crashing down around you.
I liked this book for many reasons. For one, it presents a worst-case scenario that deserves serious consideration given the veracity of some of the authors' claims. Second, it presents interesting reading. I particularly enjoyed the authors' analogy of the current world economy to an island on which six Asians work around-the-clock to feed, clothe, and shelter the sole American - who benefits the Asians by giving them a reason to produce.
Most interestingly, the author hit the nail on the head with respect to both housing and the declining dollar. An investor in February, 2007 (when this book was published) would have done very well moving his portfolio to gold and foreign stocks.
However, there were some major problems with this book, in my opinion. First and foremost, the book ends with a shameless plug for the authors' investment company. If his ideas are that excellent, he should not need to plug his brokerage....clients will find him regardless. Also, he presents his company as the single outlet for implementing his plan. I would appreciate two or three unbiased options (low-cost foreign index funds, for example) - otherwise his entire book seems like a fear-based ploy to increase his own business with little regard for his clients.
The authors also make a strong case for dividends over capital appreciation. However, if you are a believer in efficient markets, singling out dividend-paying stocks will not result in a greater return than the market as a whole.
Lastly, a major premise of the book is that the lack of manufacturing in America will lead to a decline in the dollar, inflation, and recession. However, I think it is important to note that a declining dollar may serve to bolster our manufacturing sector by making our products more competitive both domestically and internationally. So the very problem the authors present could potentially solve itself.
Overall, the authors do an excellent job of considering the potential for a decline in the US economy, and present some interesting strategies to mitigate the effects of the crash. Even if you disagree with the authors, some of their strategies (including investment in foreign securities and gold) have a place in almost every portfolio.
Good to be aware of this, don't have to agree...........2007-10-03
I saw Peter Schiff on CNBC and was drawn to his style. I love the fact that he stands up to these idiot talking heads that think everything is "pretty good".. the economy is basically strong they will tell you. Well I tend to agree with Schiff's views. Worth the read.

Reference.......2007-08-13
If you use the charts to look for trades, you have to buy this book. It's an awesome reference for charting.
Good Even for a Random Walker.......2007-07-22
This book is a very well written introduction to the Technical Analysis of the financial markets. It covers a lot of ground and for a text book style layout, it is surprisingly easy to read. Murphy starts with a solid introduction including the philosophy of technical analysis and a defense against the criticisms from academics and followers of the Random Walk Theory. The meat of the book is a comprehensive treatment of the core components of technical analysis including Trendlines, Reversal and Continuation Patterns, Moving Averages, and Oscillators. The author continues to dig deeper with Point & Figure Charts, Japanese Candlesticks, and Eliott Wave Theory.
As a big fan of Malkiel's "Random Walk Down Wall Street," I started reading this book with some healthy skepticism. While I was not converted to the chartist's philosophy, I felt like I did pick up some tools that could still be useful in a buy-and-hold strategy.
Everything a beginner needs to know.......2007-07-07
John Murphy's book explains nearly everything anyone who is looking to understand the technical side of the market could ask for.
PROS: Easy to follow. Starts from the ground up into the complicated stuff. Feels like a year's worth of college courses finished in a few weeks time. This is far and away the best overall stock book I've read to date. I'm making money now!
CONS: Spends a bit too much time on futures trading (for which the book was originally written) Doesn't get far enough into how much time should lapse as a pattern unfolds. Doesn't get much into the psychology of the trader's mind. Somewhat outdated on computer advances (not a big deal)
Classic Technical Analysis Book.......2007-06-28
I received 4 copies of this book during my course work at the NYIF, its an excellent referance manual for anyone applying Technical Analysis to the financial markets.
Excellent introduction to TA - an easy read.......2007-06-27
This is the first book I bought on TA and, honestly, it looked intimidating. It's not. Open it up and it reads cover to cover very quickly. Not too technical - not too basic. Just right. This is an excellent introduction to technical analysis: easy to read language, large print, nice heavy bright white pages. Oh, and the content is excellent as well: worded well, good organization, understandable examples and illustrations.
