    Book Description

A classic! Find inspiration in some of history’s great military victories as others have for over 2,400 years. Sun Tzu was the most famous military scientist, and one of the ablest commanders, in ancient China. Asian warlords, and modern leaders as dissimilar as Mao Tse-tung and General Eisenhower, have used his principles to change the shape of the world. Interpreted here by General Tao Hanzhang, one of the architects of the Communist Revolution, Tzu’s advice on timing, maneuvering, flexibility, and knowledge of the enemy’s leaders, strengths, and weaknesses is as powerful today as when it was first issued.

I take a star off because, frankly, alot of the geography/history is a bit too arcane for the Western reader.

But it's a great book nonetheless.

The Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary is a brand new guide to learning Chinese. Designed specifically for English-speaking adult learners who are either learning from scratch or refreshing lost language skills, it offers an easy to use dictionary, extra help with vocabulary, and essential information on living and interacting in the Chinese-speaking world. The dictionary is exceptionally easy to use, because it moves away from the traditional dictionary layout. The 30-page Learning and Lifestyle kit gives key information on both the Chinese language, with a list of the words you really need to know, grammar help, and verb tables, and on life in the Chinese-speaking world: background information on lifestyle and culture, tips on etiquette and interaction in the language, and a phrasefinder for use when travelling. 3 out of 5 stars Helpful product.......2007-10-06

This dictionary is very useful if you're looking to translate from Chinese to English... the only thing is that you should be familiarized with pinyin. Translating written Chinese with this dictionary is basically impossible.

    3 out of 5 stars Simplified Characters.......2007-08-23

This is an excellent dictionary if you are learning from Pinyin and not learning to read Chinese. However, if you need Chinese characters, you should be aware that the book uses simplified characters. That would be fine for some people and places, but NOT if you're studying in Taiwan as we are at the moment since Taiwan uses traditional characters only.

5 out of 5 stars Oxford Beginner Chinese Dictionary.......2007-04-06

This is a very good dictionary for the beginner's level. The presentation is clear and pleasant, the explanation and examples direct, easy to understand and relevant. I particularly like the boxes. I wish the authors will expand it into a more advanced edition, following the same principles. The use of pinyin is certainly a plus.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-10-21

If you are an english speaker trying to learn Chinese this is one book that you need. It is incredibly useful and well done. Oxford added enough new features that this dictionary is worth it even if you own the previous version (Starter's Dictionary).

There are many other resources for the beginner that one could debate which ones to buy. This one will complement any other resource that you choose to use.

    Book Description

Emperor Qin Shihuang is known to everyone in China. He was born in 259 B.C. and became king of the state of Qin at the age of 13. In 221 B.C. he established the Qin Dynasty, the first centralized and unified regime in the history of China. His merits and demerits have brought him both praise and blame down through the ages. He has been honored as a remarkable emperor and denounced as a tyrant.

Some of the stories in this book come from historical records which serve to silhouette the life of Emperor Qin Shihuang, and some are based on popular legends, adding highly colored details about him and reflecting the feelings and hopes of ordinary people. These two sources complement each other for a comprehensive look at Qin Shihuang and his world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, quick read!.......2006-05-14

I bought this book not too long ago, and enjoyed it a lot. It's a quick read, only being 186 pages long, and tells tales of how the first Emperor of China rose to power. It also includes stories of the many things he did after annoiting himself as the "Huang-di" (Emperor) and the legends that surround him. I'd highly recommend this for the history buff, or if you simply like short tales.

4 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read stories about a famous and infamous emporer.......2004-01-02

The book "Tales of Emperor Qin Shihuang" tells us a bit of history and many anecdotes of individuals who fell into or out of favor with Qin Shihuang, the ruler of Qin (also known as Ch'in). Emperor Qin Shihuang ended the Warring States period of China in 221 BCE by defeating, one by one, the armies of the various rulers of those states. Qin Shihuang was a despot -- conceited, cruel, unforgiving, mercurial of temperament. In many ways, he was a product of his times... not much different from the rulers of the other states that he subjugated. The stories we read here are of individuals who attained positions of power, such as Gan Luo, the 12-year-old boy who became Prime Minister. We also read of the terra-cotta army that was buried with the emperor when he died. The tales are written in an easy fashion. Not a scholarly text by any means, but a quick and enjoyable read. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in ancient Chinese history and the personalities who lived in the times.

    Book Description

In the past decades, the doors between China and the West have been flung open. Explosive economic growth and massive increases in travel and immigration have engendered curiosity and interest in this burgeoning nation. Yet modernization has a dark side too, threatening traditional Chinese culture, including stories and storytelling. This new gathering of stories from a variety of sources, captures the fading storytelling traditions of a vast and diverse country. Focusing specifically on the stories of the Han Chinese (the largest ethnic group in China, numbering over a billion people), the collection presents more than 50 tales, both well known and obscure--from "Monkeys Fishing the Moon" and "The Butterfly Lovers" to "Dragon Princess" and "Painted Skin." These are stories that will enchant listeners of all ages, while providing a glimpse into Chinese traditions and ways of thought. Tales are organized into seven sections: Animal Tales; Tales of Magic, Love and Romance; Myths, Legends and Immortals; Moral Stories; How Things Came to Be; and Proverbial Tales. To further enhance cultural understanding, the stories are supplemented with historical and cultural background, notes on storytelling and other folk traditions, recipes, proverbs, color photos, a map, a glossary, and more. All grade levels.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the Chinese Culture.......2007-06-05

This book is awesome because it can meet the many needs of different readers. I found it useful as a college student who took an elementary Chinese class. I learned so much about Chinese culture not only from the tales retold by the author but also from the thoughtful introduction to each tale's cultural background. A fellow student of mine who majors folklore told me that she benefited a lot from the tale type and motif index attached at the back of the book. She learned how much Chinese tales shared with many of those in other cultures of the world. I strongly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars The Magic Lotus Lantern and Other Tales from the Han Chinese.......2007-03-10

Haiwang Yuan's Magic Lotus Lantern and Other Tales from the Han China is a fine collection of Chinese fairy tales and legends known to the hearts of people in China as well as the Chinese living abroad. For the first time in many years, these well-loved stories are presented in English to American readers and other readers of English.

Reading Magic Lotus Lantern ... brought back my childhood memories of storytelling time. Growing up in a small village in China during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960's--when schools were closed, public libraries were nonexistent and most books were banned--my favorite pastime was storytelling in the evening. Grandma Yu next door was a great storyteller. Many of the stories she told can be found in Yuan's book, with slight variations as it is true with fairy tales retold around the world.

"The Origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival" reminds me of how as a child, on the full-moon nights of August fifteenth (Chinese calendar), my friends and I looked up to the big glowing disc, trying to identify the lonely Chang `e and her companion the Jade Rabbit.

"Cowherd and Weaving Girl", a bittersweet love story, so deeply touched us that we spent many cloudless nights, looking for the ladle shaped seven stars-- the symbol of the seven fairy sisters on one side the Milky Way and Cowherd with his two children on the other. I also remember, on an early rainy morning of the seventh day of the seventh month (lunar calendar)--it always rained on that day, I was sitting at the window, watching swallows gathering in the sky making twittering sounds. Then they disappeared into the dark clouds. Grandma Yu said that the swallow flew to Heaven to build a love-bridge over the Milky Way for the reunion of Cowherd and Weaving Girl. She also told us, if one stood under the grapevines trellis that evening, one could hear the intimate conversation between the couple and the laughter of their young children. That was exactly what we did on that July evening. The soft raindrops tapping on the leaves of grapevines sounded like the lovers' whispers of sorrow and happiness.

"Monkey King..." is a charming character from a great Chinese classical novel Journey to the West written in the late 1500's by the famous scholar Wu Cheng'en. There is a series of episodes about Monkey King accompanying his Master Tangseng, a Buddha, on his way to India to acquire Holy Scriptures. The two stories Yuan told in his book are among the popular ones and they are well loved by the Chinese people. Many of the Monkey King stories have been adapted to children stories. As Winnie the Pooh is adored by children in the United States, so is Monkey King loved by children in China. More than Winnie the Pooh, Monkey King is as naughty as Max (Maurice Sendak) and Peter Rabbit (Beatrix Potter), and as brave and smart as Robin Hood. Monkey King plays a major part in Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel American Born Chinese, which won the 2006 National Book Award for Young People.
The story of "Mulan", which was made into Walt Disney children's animated movie, tells in more detail and touching manner about the heroine's love for her country and her family.

In a nutshell, each story in The Magic Lotus Lantern.... tells a piece of Chinese history and culture, and reading these stories, readers are taken on a tour through a five-thousand-year history of China.

To help readers better understand China's history and culture, the author, in his first two parts of the book, gives brief introduction to the Chinese history and culture, including religion, folk arts, music, crafts and games, traditional food and recipes, holidays and celebrations and more. The Magic Lotus Lantern... is an educational, informative and fun guide for anyone who is interested in Chinese history, culture and literature.

4 out of 5 stars The best Chinese-English dictionary out there.......2007-06-05

If you are at an intermediate or higher level in learning Chinese, I've found that this is just about the best Chinese-English dictionary within a single volume. It is actually a complete English translation of the "Xiandai Hanyu Cidian", which is a major Chinese dictionary. In addition to containing all basic Chinese vocabulary, it also covers many archaic words and phrases from Classical Chinese, many of which cannot be found in simpler Chinese dictionaries. Unfortunately, it is somewhat bulky, so you probably won't be carrying it with you to Chinese class every day.

This is a translation and annotation of Li Dong-yuan's Pi Wei Lun; by Bob Flaws. With so much new research in China on the ideas and formulas of Li Dong-yuan, we feel this book is one of the most important pre-modern texts in Chinese medicine for 21st century clinicians. Bob has undertaken the task of a fresh translation of this book, this time including detailed commentary, relevant case histories and random clinical trail reports for each chapter.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Notes by the master of supplementing-earth.......2001-05-09

The Pi Wei Lun, or Spleen-Stomach Treatise, is the magnum opus of Li Gao, styled Li Dong-yuan, one of the four great masters of Chinese medicine during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. Li was the founder of the bu tu pai, or supplementing-earth school of medical thought, which continues to exert a profound influence on modern Chinese herbal medicine; many standard herbal prescriptions used in teaching and in practice were first recorded or devised by Li Gao. In the Pi Wei Lun, Li outlines both the classical and practical foundations of this school.

One of the most fascinating portions of the Pi Wei Lun is Li's commentaries on earlier classic works, including the Nei Jing, Nan Jing, and the works of Zhang Ji (Zhang Zhong-jing). Indeed, by revealing his thoughts on these sources, he makes it clear that the importance of spleen-stomach theory had been realized well in advance of the Jin and Yuan. It was, however, the Chinese medical "renaissance" of that period that recapitulated so much of what had earlier been said on the subject and advanced it as an integrated basis for the practice of internal medicine.

Li's writing is not straightforward or systematic. Rather, the Pi Wei Lun is a collection of notes and essays on spleen-stomach theory. Although many example prescriptions are listed, relatively little is offered by way of explanation. As in many historical works on the subject of Chinese medicine, it is assumed that the reader is both astute and very learned. The translators thoughtfully included many footnotes and glosses for the benefit of modern readers, but even these assume a level of proficiency at least commensurate with professional practice. It is a book to be lived with, as opposed to merely read. Nevertheless, for its information on composing prescriptions, the variations of treatment through the seasons, comments on classical references to spleen-stomach issues, food damage, "yin fire," and clinical applications, the Pi Wei Lun is essential reading.

        3 out of 5 stars Oxford Chinese-English Dictionary & Software - Strong points & Weak.......2007-10-04

The dictionary is very full, and has a wealth of contemporary terms. These are very useful in a world that is experiencing rapid technological and social change. The written dictionary tends to give fuller treatment of the entries. The software is a bit sparse on discussion and examples. Sample sentences and usage examples would have been ideal. (I have in mind two older Oxford electronic dictionaries, one Spanish-English, the other French-English, that offered very full discussion of the entries.)

Also, if you are reading along in hard copy and come across a character you do not recognize, or view same on a computer graphic, it is not possible to look it up in the electronic dictionary. Other programs I have come across have a built-in writing table for this purpose. And I have even used a free-ware program that allows you to click the radical, then shows you characters based on the radical organized by stroke order. The paper version does have a radical index (based on the simplified form of the characters).

The dictionary does have a document viewer which can open text files or into which you can paste plain text. You can work with Unicode or ANSI-based text. It has the ever-popular mouse-over feature, which allows you to hover the mouse cursor over a character or combination of characters, and the definition pops up. Here the drawback is that the actual functioning is slow and a bit awkward. Sometimes only one character pops up when you would like a highlighted combination. Sometimes a nearby character is defined.

Finally, you cannot copy and paste dictionary entries into another document. That, quite frankly, is ridiculous. People using a dictionary are obviously trying to build up their vocabulary. Every other electronic dictionary I have come across facilitates the copying of entries so that you can build up a vocab list of your own. This one positively hinders it. (If copyright infringement is the concern - as if someone owns the English or Chinese languages - then at least allow users to build up vocabulary lists within the dictionary itself or a coordinated utility.)

        4 out of 5 stars Excelente diccionario.......2007-08-15

Aunque es un diccionario Chino-ingles estandar, presenta buena calidad de edicion, ademas de que el software que lo acompania es de muy buena calidad y gran cantidad de caracteres chinos con su pronunciacion legible (no sintetizador de voz)

        4 out of 5 stars Good .......2007-05-15

As a beginner in Chinese, I found very helpful the CD-ROM, because it reduces the time of searching the lemmas. Those lemmas are more detailed that those of the Oxford beginner's, maybe the double in number and size. On the other hand, the weak point of this dictionary is that the examples that show the use of the words are not given in pinyin. Only those who read Chinese characters can take benefit of them.

3 out of 5 stars Good dictionary, especially for Chinese-English.......2007-02-02

This is a review of the Pocket Oxford Chinese Dictionary, 3rd ed.

This is an English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionary. The advantage of a dictionary like this is, of course, that you can use it to translate in either direction. The drawback, which to my mind is significant, is that dictionaries like this are never really good at either the English-Chinese or the Chinese-English. Furthermore, most of the time you are either trying to write something in Chinese (in which case you just want a really good English-Chinese dictionary) or you are trying to translate something out of Chinese (and then you only want a really good Chinese-English dictionary).

An exception to the above generalization is when you are travelling in China and want a good pocket dictionary for situations in which you are stumped. Although this is entitled a "pocket" dictionary, you would need to have really big pockets: it's 5" x 8" x 1.5".

So there are some definite downsides to this dictionary. But how good are the translations? Let's compare the Oxford dictionary with the Harper Collins Chinese Concise Dictionary and see how they stack up.

On the Chinese-English side, the primary entries in both the Oxford and the Harper Collins are alphabetized by Pinyin with the lead characters in simplified. The Oxford also provides traditional forms in parentheses, but the Harper Collins does not. Both dictionaries provide a fair number of sample sentences and phrases. My offhand impression is that the Oxford sentences are frequently more idiomatic Chinese, but I'm not a native speaker, so I can't guarantee that.

Consider the entry for ZHI3, "paper." Oxford gives you the sample phrase YI4 ZHANG1 BAI2 ZHI3 (in characters without Pinyin) and translates it, "a blank sheet of paper." (Note that this tells you what the measure word for paper is too.) Oxford then gives you 10 words or expressions starting with ZHI3. In contrast, Harper Collins does not tell you what the measure word is, and gives you only five words or expressions that start with ZHI3. (Oxford, but not Harper Collins, includes the expression "paper tiger": not used much since the death of Mao, but still a useful phrase to know.) My sense is that this is representative: on Chinese-English, Oxford is the better of the two.

What about English-Chinese? Under "floor," Oxford and Harper Collins give most of the same senses, but there are some interesting differences. For example, for the first two senses, Oxford gives (1) DI4MIAN4, DI4BAN3, (2) DI3 (in characters and Pinyin). But there is no explanation in English of the fact that sense (1) refers to the floor of a house, while sense (2) refers to the floor of the ocean or a cave. There is a note in Chinese explaining the second sense, but you need to read Chinese at a second-year level (at a minimum) to understand it. On the other hand, Harper Collins gives "(of a room) DI4BAN3" and "(of sea, valley) DI3." In addition, Harper Collins explains the difference in usage of "ground floor" between British and American English. (I didn't know about that myself!) Again, I think this is representative: Harper Collins is better (at least for a beginner) on English-Chinese.

Overall, I think the Oxford dictionary is better than the Harper Collins. But you'll never find one dictionary that does both Chinese-English and English-Chinese equally well.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to use.......2006-05-22

Aside from the general complaints given by other reviewers, the list of proper nouns on both the CD and the text version of this dictionary is awful.

As an example, searching for "Cuba" in the electronic version yields one result, Guantanamo Bay (yes, the prison), but no entry for the country itself. Searching for "South Africa" yields the transliteration of Cape Town but once again the country itself is nowhere to be found. The text version is even worse.

Text is hard to read, examples of usage are hard to distinguish from one another because they aren't marked properly with different type sets or styles. Instead of "or" when showing alternative ways of using a word, the dictionary uses huozhe, the chinese equivalent, which makes it very hard for someone not familiar with reading large amounts of Chinese characters to see what's really being said.

The cheap price and comprehensiveness are attractive, but you are better off buy some other dictionary if you can.
