A Comprehensive and Practical Reference for the Practioner.......2005-09-23
The size and weight of this book caused me to think twice because the combination of those features often suggest more than a fair amount of techno speak, often more satisfying for the writer than the reader. The weight of this book is pure muscle, written for the user...clear, understandable and comprehensive. If you are interested in global organizational performance, I found the treatment of the subject very useful and well done. As it turns out, the weight of the book has a complimentary benefit i.e. eliminating at least one trip to the gym, I can now build both strength and knowledge without having to take a gym shower. It may not be a benefit for everyone, but the Handbook for HTP will provide value for those who are serious about this subject....
Excellent Reference.......2003-01-07
This book has been an excellent desk reference. It is a must for anyone working or studying in the field of performance technology.
Just what is says: a complete and state-of-the-art handbook.......1999-09-10
We humans are most important. Not only to ourselves, but increasingly to economy. More and more humans become alive within the business they work in. And businesses become more and more knowledge critical, which enhances the importance of humans and their performance. This means that addressing issues on human performance becomes increasingly complex and daunting. Hence: Human Performance Technology. This handbook is both scientific and realistic. It takes the need for metrics as much into account as the 'softer' aspects. It approaches HP from a General Systems Theory approach and does is coherent. Everyone that wants to know where we stand, where we are going, will love it for its scientific and academic value alone. But those who want to put HPT in practice at strategical, tactical and/or oprational level will both love and need it. If you are serious about HP you will find this handbook is worth every cent.

The first comprehensive account of the explosion of mobile services (rich voice, internet, messaging, content), from multimedia messaging and camera phones to location-based services and mobile phone television, it tells the fascinating story of these products and services in the pioneering markets of Europe, the United States and the Asia-Pacific, particularly Japan, China and South Korea. This book is essential reading for managers and marketers who must now mobilize their products, servi ces and companies. It looks in depth at the impact of mobility in consumer and business markets, strategy, and across all industries and shows how marketing innovation has been brought about by developments in mobile technologies.
Book Description
We live in the age of speed. The world around us moves faster than ever before. We strain to be more efficient, to cram more into each minute, each hour, every day. Since the Industrial Revolution shifted the world into high gear, the cult of speed has taken complete hold and pushed us to breaking point. Consider these facts: Americans spend 40% less time with their children than they did in the 1960s; American on average spends 72 minutes of every day behind the wheel of a car; a typical business executive now loses 68 hours a year to being put on hold; and American adults currently devote on average a meager half hour per week to making love.
Living on the edge of exhaustion, we are constantly reminded by our bodies and minds that the pace of life is spinning out of control. In Praise of Slowness traces the history of our increasingly breathless relationship with time, and tackles the consequences and conundrum of living in this accelerated culture of our own creation. Why are we always in such a rush? What is the cure for time-sickness? Is it possible, or even desirable, to slow down? Realizing the price we pay for unrelenting speed, people all over the world are reclaiming their time and slowing down the pace - and living happier, more productive and healthier lives as a result. A slow revolution is taking place.
But here you will find no Luddite calls to overthrow technology and seek a pre-industrial utopia. This is a modern revolution, championed by cell phone using, emailing lovers of sanity. The slow philosophy can be summed up in a single wordbalance. People are discovering energy and efficiency where you may have least expected in slowing down.
In this engaging and entertaining exploration, award-winning journalist and rehabilitated speedaholic Carl Honoré details our perennial love affair with efficiency and speed in a perfect blend of anecdotal reportage, history and intellectual inquiry. In Praise of Slowness is the first comprehensive look at the worldwide slow movements making their way into the mainstream, in offices, factories, neighborhoods, kitchens, hospitals, concert halls, bedrooms, gyms and schools. Defining a movement whose time has finally come, this spirited manifesto will make you completely rethink your relationship with time.

Great if you want to jump off the treadmill - at least sometimes.......2007-02-17
This is an interesting and inspiring book, offering an alternative view to speed as king and faster, more, harder are always better. The author explores a variety of ways that people all over the world are slowing down and putting the emphasis on quality and savouring the experience - whether that be in terms of food, exercise, sex or work. Personally, I found a lot of the content just confirmed what I already thought and tried to put into practice myself, but it was still good to hear and there were some interesting ideas new to me. The style of writing is part investigative, part historical and part narrative. This makes for entertaining reading but sometimes it feels a little too light-weight. I got the impression that the author was overly concerned not to appear a mad convert to the slow way of life. Overall, though, this is a good book and well worth setting aside the time to relax and read in true slow style... especially if you are stressed out and (think you) don't have the time.
In Praise of Slowness:Challenging theCult of Speed.......2007-01-12
Living in Sweden, this book was given the highest standard of praise in my local newspaper. However, it was not what I had expected when I began to read it in English (my native language). Perhaps the translated version into Swedish was better than the original version. It was o.k., but not as good as the Swedish critic gave it honors for.
An Incredibly Insightful Book.......2006-08-31
I found that virtually EVERY paragraph in this book has something of tremendous value to say to those who seek realistic escape from the frantic, artificial, and so often mindless "fast-forward video" pace of modern life - whether it be a thought-provoking observation, a relevant quote, an incisive suggestion or a mind-expanding analysis of a particular topic - the author's words realistically speak to, and gently correct, the life-destroying freneticness so many of us habitually fall into.
But please, don't just quickly scan through this wonderful volume - slowly consider, absorb and mentally savor it's insights a little at a time, like you would leisurely enjoy a delicious meal. I think you'll find it well worth your time.
Carl Honore has truly written a gem here - one of the best books I've read in years.
Everyone should read this!!!.......2006-03-17
Picked this up at the airport and it hooked me right from the first page. I could not stop reading it. It rocks!!! The author pulls our go-faster culture apart with anecdotes, statistics and some really funny one-liners. I was seeing myself in the bad examples of roadrunner behavior, like eating standing up or trying to do too many things at once. The author does not preach, he just takes you on an invesitagation round the world where there can only be one conclusion: that slowing things down a little would be good for all of us. When I got home I bought copies for all my friends, especially the fastest ones. Everyone should read this book, before its too late. What are you waiting for?!?
Inspiring, but I can't read it SLOWLY............2006-03-14
This is definitely an inspring topic in the 21st centry as everyone (especially those living in the city) talks about having pressure and feeling nervous with the idea of time. The author has pointed out many interesting figures and information of how living in a high speed standard affect our quality of living. He recommends different kinds of method to let human pursue their live without fuss and trouble, which indeed, very inspiring and useful. However, he seems to give too much facts or examples on one particular idea, which made me unable to focus SLOWLY and enjoy reading his book, thus I have to skip or skim quickly throughout some topics.
Nevertheless, I would recommend some topics which I found interesting such as Chapter 5: Mind/Body and Chapter 9: Leisure.
There is one point the author states in the book which I agree very much - "Being slow means that you control thr rhythms of your life. You decide how fast you have to go in any given context. If today I want to go fast, I go fast; if tomorrow I want to go slow, I go slow. What we are fighting for is the right to determine our own tempos."
Let's think what things you have done today. Are you doing them in your own tempo? Is time controlling us?

Book Description
Create sound software designs with data structures that use modern object-oriented design patterns! Author Bruno Preiss presents the fundamentals of data structures and algorithms from a modern, object-oriented perspective. The text promotes object-oriented design using Java and illustrates the use of the latest object-oriented design patterns. Virtually all the data structures are discussed in the context of a single class hierarchy. This framework clearly shows the relationships between data structures and illustrates how polymorphism and inheritance can be used effectively. Key Features of the Text
* All data structures are presented using a common framework. This shows the relationship between the data structures and how they are implemented.
* Object-oriented design patterns are used to demonstrate how a good design fits together and transcends the problem at hand.
* A single Java software design is used throughout the text to provide a better understanding of the operation of complicated data structures.
* Just-in-time presentation of mathematical analysis techniques introduces students to mathematical concepts as needed.

Customer Reviews:
Terribly written.......2005-01-30
I have taken several math and computer programming courses. This it the worst book I have ever been forced used. I had a hard time recalling some of the math that is used immediately, the explanations are terrible to say the least. I tried for hours to figure it out using just that book. When I got home I found a different reference and had it figure out in one minutes. So basically the problems I am assigned I have to learn from another source to do... that shouldn't be. Find another author that cares if he makes sense or not, one that doesn't assume you will understand it regardless of how it is explained.... "such is higher education these days" I wish I could slap that guy.
Average and TOO much mathematics.......2004-09-07
The initial sections of the book focus on too much mathematical formula without providing plain English examples especially in the asymptotic analysis sections. Isn't there a book out there which explains in plain simple English? It also uses misleading terms like "external nodes" and "internal nodes" when it comes to trees. I wouldn't recommend this book. (I'm only using it because it is the university text, now I wish I had my money back)
Not so much in quality.......2002-12-18
I know this book is used as a textbook in some computer engineering courses at my school. However, I do not belong to engineering, but I am a computer science undergraduate. :-) I've tried to help my friends who were having a lot of trouble implementing a binary tree. So to follow what they learned, I've looked at the book. Hmm. I sat there, and said "I'm lucky that my profs don't teach me algorithms like this." Some implementations did not make quite intuitive sense to me. Although I understood what the book was trying to illustrate, but I didn't see why such implementation would be intuitive and useful.
I used this book at school.......2001-04-13
Hi, as an undergrad engineering student, I had this book for the coursebook in my algorithms course. Honestly speaking, it's good , very readable text. I never used any of the code examples fom the book in my assignments, yet they proved rather helpfull in understanding the material. Something, that I think is missing from this book is the answeres to the problems at the end of the chapter that are not programming projects. Ading them to the book could help students a lot ( no need to relay on TA's )
decent for soft eng, bad for data structures.......2001-03-21
As a second year student, the use of design patterns (see chapter 5) bothers me. It really detracts from what the author is trying to convey. It's extremely hard to ignore them because you have to backtrack to previous chapters frequently which creates more confusion.
This book may be useful to learn the basics of software engineering. But given complexity of the design patterns in this book, it could be glossed over in one lecture.

Customer Reviews:
Suitable for readers who never know about Chinese business.......2005-05-30
The philosophical paradigm of this book is that culture determines the way people value and behave in the business world.
This book is relevant to readers who are new to the Chinese business world. Professor Chen from Darden Business School defines `Chinese business world' to encompass Chinese in the mainland and overseas. As the Chinese business world is very culturally-determined, he concludes that traditional cultural values govern how people undertake and organise their businesses in various aspects. Salient cultural values include family-oriented, guanxi and networking, the middle way, and patience.
Professor Chen concludes that Chinese culture and business practices are diametrically different from the West. If readers are quite familar with the Chinese world, they will find a bit frustrated because there are too many management studies that have fallen on this subject. Another limitation of this book is that Professor Chen assumes that cultural values and business practices of Mainland and Overseas Chinese are analogous. He fails to understand that the way to conduct business is different between mainland and overseas Chinese. For example, entrepreneurs from Mainland China tend to be more speculative or opportunistic and less ethical than other Chinese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan.
A Great Intro to China Business.......2004-09-28
I see that several readers have panned this one... it may very well be some old info, as pointed out by some apparently "old China hands"... but don't rush to judgement... there are many of us who are just getting started there.
I picked up the book in the Hong Kong airport on my way into China for the first time, on business.
It was a treasure on that trip. First of all, it is not too heavy. Much more importantly, readers can get a great overview of what they might be facing. Mir-Ching Jen grew up and studied in China, including classic Confucius and other studies. This may make him almost unique in the ranks of "about China" books. some of his insight is very helpful... the book reads well the 2nd and third time.
If you are looking for a first pass intro, get this book. Then, as we all have and will, continue to get and read more. There is no one (or two) books that will cover it all for any of us. This is a great start.
Rehashed.......2002-11-04
Very little in this book is original. Even the title is borrowed from "Inside Chinese Organizations" written earlier by Kai-Alexander Schlevogt (a sound empirical study)! The style, emphasis and content is very similar to "New Asian Emperors" by George Haley and Chin Tiong Tan (a much better written book with a more complex grasp of the terrain of Chinese management).
The author does tackle some concepts such as "face" etc., but these provide very little insights for any but the most extreme novices.
Disappointing.
Not recommended.......2002-11-04
I agree with some of the reviewers below -- this book presents a complex topic in a very simplistic fashion. The concepts covered are very basic and almost naive.
Very naive and simplistic.......2002-10-10
Given the build up for this book, I found it very disappointing. It completely ignores the fact that most American companies have failed in China -- precisely following the strategies the author advocated! If you know very little about China, and have eaten at a Chinese restaurant a couple of times, this book should provide an easy introduction. Otherwise, pass on it! I would much rather recommend "New Asian Emperors: The Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. for a more complex understanding of business culture in the region.
Book Description
This volume shows how to invest assets over time to achieve satisfactory returns subject to uncertainties, various constraints and liability commitments. The papers utilize several approaches and integrate a number of techniques as well as discussing a variety of models that have either been implemented, are close to being implemented or represent new innovative approaches that may lead to future novel applications, that is, financial engineering. This is essential reading for all involved in analyzing the financial markets.
Customer Reviews:
Understand other's models to build yours.......2000-05-19
I was looking for mathematical models to build an ALM software and obtain the best performances from this software. None of the theories shown in this book perfectly matches my customers' requests, I could proudly build my own model, joining some of the models I read to grant my customers' satisfaction. Thanks to the Newton Institute, I could find both existing and currently building models.
Book Description
Energy deregulation, privatization and competition are a hot international topic. Professionals in this field understand the importance of hedging their financial risk, but are often unclear how to do so. The result is that either they take undue and unwarranted risk or they shy away from futures and derivatives investments that could improve their financial position while preventing substantial losses. Energy Risk Management is the first book to address the important issues of worldwide energy price risk management. Peter C. Fusaro has assembled the leading industry figures to explain general theories and practices for hedging risk, and specific methods to effectively manage risk in markets such as coal, natural gas, electricity, hydropower and others. Topics include: The ABCs of energy financial instruments - How to use hedging tools like futures and options, forwards and spreads; Energy securitization - Ways to securitize oil and gas production, and project finance implications; The future of energy price risk management - Globalization of energy markets, and an integrated approach to managing all risks. Energy professionals and investors worldwide require information to clarify risk management concepts and applications that are new to them. Energy Risk Management steps into that void, providing proven hedging strategies in non-technical language that simplifies this intimidating topic.
Customer Reviews:
The 'bible' of energy risk management.......2005-12-28
Peter Fusaro edits and contributes to what has become one of the standards for those wishing to learn about energy risk management. Certainly there are more complex books on energy risk management written by quants for quants but Fusaro's book is squarely targeted at those wishing to get a broader handle on energy risk management. In that regard, it more than meets its mark.
Energy Risk Simplied.......2001-12-08
This book provides an excellent background and review in easy to understand language about energy trading and energy risk management. I highly recommend it for understanding the basics of this complex subject. It also provides a global overview of market developments. It is not, however, a quantative treatise on energy and financial derivatives. This is a primer that should be viewed as such.Fusaro's second, Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets, is the companion piece to this book and adds the newer commodities of weather, emissions, bandwidth and coal derivatives. I recommend it as well.
Disappointing.......2001-11-03
This book is definitely not worth its price. Basic option theory and knowledge on VAR is wrongly interpreted. The book gives no insight on what energy risk management realy stands for. Utterly disappointed !
Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets.......2000-12-08
Until Peter Fusaro's book "Energy Risk Management" hit the bookstores in 1998, anyone needing a clear explanation of how risk is managed in the energy markets had to sift through numerous trade publications and journals.
This was genergally the reaction of any industry participant I spoke to, independently of whether they were clients, students or collegues of mine both from the Energy community or from academia. Therefore, with this feedback, I would strongly encourage my collegues to read Peter Fusaro's new book "Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets" which he edited with Jeremy Wilcox and was published in October of this year. In this book Peter Fusaro and his team of energy professionals take the reader deeper into the secondary markets (energy derivatives, etc.) which have emerged as a result of the deregulation process of the Energy Industry and, most importantly, the book explains how to use these markets to manage energy risk. Further, in chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6 the reader is introduced to the concept of interdependency among energy markets and other related markets. These include weather and weather derivatives, emission trading and bandwidth - the most recently emerging market converging with Power to become the backbone of the new global economy. This is the first book to address the complex topic of convergence of power and the rapidly growing bandwidth market. For this reason alone this book becomes a must for everyone who is interested in becoming a part of the evolving energy market.
Energy Risk Management is Risk Free.......2000-11-27
Energy Risk Management is great primer for those interested in limiting their risk exposure to volatile International energy markets which are in the process of deregulating. Fusaro and his cast of contributing authors examine a wide variety of energy sectors and give practical examples of risk management techniques in easy to understand terminology.
I was so pleased with the content of this book I even recommended it to a friend who has been trading International financial instruments for the past 12 years and is looking to get into the energy risk management field. When I asked him for his reaction to the book, he said it was "excellent".
For greater detail, I also plan to read the author's follow-up work, "Energy Derivatives: Trading Emerging Markets" which looks at new energy related markets such as weather, emissions and bandwidth trading.
