EXCELLENT resource.......2007-05-14
I am a Special Education teacher who works with students with ASD. I purchased this book hoping that it would add to my knowledge of ASD and to find more ideas for the classroom. This is an AMAZING book full of ideas and facts. The best part of the book is that the authors provide titles of books to use, organizations and internet sites to help you out, instead of just giving you ideas and blindly sending you on your way to search for titles and the like yourself. This is a great resource for parents, organizations and educators- beginning and experienced. HIGHLY recommended.
Great Book!.......2007-04-10
This is one of the better ASD books that I have read. Every parent and teacher who is in a childs life that has an ASD should have this book.

The Child with Special Needs book.......2007-08-17
This is an excellent book and resource for any parent or teacher, nanny or counselor or therapist who may interact with children with disabilities. It is extremely useful and is an easy read (much easier and more friendly to read than Greenspan's other works). I'd recommend it especially for parents when they first learn that a disability may exist.
Engaging Autism is better.......2007-08-17
After our son was diagnosed with developmental delay, this was the first book I read. It was helpful, but since he was subsequently diagnosed with ASD a few weeks later, I read Greenspan's other book (Engaging Autism) and found it to be more detailed. The jargon is somewhat difficult to follow at times, and it seems as though both books could be shortened by about 200 pages without much loss of information. I feel obliged to write that the best book about helping your child with ASD that I've found so far is "More Than Words" by Fern Sussman. It has almost all of Greenspan's points in an easy-to-read, illustrated "how-to" format. You can also order it from the North Carolina Autism Society bookstore's website for less than half of Amazon's price. (Hopefully the Amazon people won't delete this review now!) Good luck.
DIR/Floortime Intervention Has Had Profoundly Positive Impact on My Child's Development.......2007-02-14
After a well regarded developmental clinic in my city found my child to be vexed with significant cognitive and speech delay (my child was not yet two), I accidentally stumbled upon Greenspan's book, The Child With Special Needs.
This discovery has been the best thing that has happened to my child and family. I "inhaled" the text's instructions about how to begin doing a home floortime program with my child. Yes, doing three or more sessions of floortime daily was taxing. And I certainly wasn't convinced that I was doing floortime perfectly. Yet, I persisted and my child responded with great enthusiasm. And we had great fun to boot! My intuition that DIR/floortime had something unique and important to offer my child fueled my quest to find DIR/floortime specialists in my area. My search was successful, and my child has benefited from a DIR/floortime intervention for five years. Despite his regulatory and sensory issues, he's soaring socially and academically. I describe him as the happiest human being I've every met and marvel at the very warm way he interacts with family and friends (it's hard and poignant to recall the dismissive comments made about my child by well meaning therapists and teachers.) Greenspan's approach has a lot to say about how inaccurate predictions about kids with special needs can truly turn out to be.
I am incredibly grateful that I learned about this intervention strategy for kids with developmental disabilities. I encourage every parent who finds themselves on this very difficult journey to learn more about this approach. I have found the Floortime Foundation's website to be a great source of information, particularly Greenspan's web radio broadcast...a gold mine of ideas (at no cost to parents!).

Helpful.......2007-01-12
This book is quite helpful for people who are interested in knowing more about autism and other developmental disorders. Autism is a treatable disorder whose symptons can be dramatically reduced with proper intervention. This book goes a long way in explaining autism and various developmental activities that will help children overcome autism.
On occasion "pschological" language makes certain passages a bit difficult to understand. But overall a useful, well written book.
Not for all special needs situations, but helpful.......2006-09-19
The methods in this book detail considerable sacrifice of parents time and resources devoted to one child; in a multiple child or two-working parent household, this would not be as beneficial and produce results as claimed from Floor Time program. Also, there are many types of special needs children with needs not addressed in this book. While overall helpful and a must-read for involved parents, continue seeking assistance from local programs and teachers/therapists, and use this as one small part of your reading list. This book does not address all the needs of all special needs children, but it is helpful and gives detailed explanations and plans to begin with. We have four special needs children with four separate diagnoses, so we are not first time parents, nor is this book the definitive program or resource for any of the four. Read it, try it, then continue researching and resourcing!
Book Description
In 2001, Dr. Baker wrote The Social Skills Picture Book, designed for young children with social communication challenges. Now, in response to the deluge of requests from parents with children in their teens, here is Dr. Baker's long-awaited book, specifically geared toward older students. The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond offers a visual learning format. Photos of actual students engaging in a wide variety of social situations show, rather than tell, the right (and wrong) ways to interact in different circumstances. They visually illustrate the positive and negative consequences of both ways of interacting. The book also offers instructions for students & families to create their own social skills booklets. The social skills address real-life situations that are important to teens, such as: making new friends, asking someone out on a date, doing difficult schoolwork, interviewing for a job, and much, much more!

Important ideas for students and parents affected by Asperger's.......2007-09-23
While I think some of the students who could benefit from this book might find it a bit patronizing and beneath their level of maturity and intelligence (since it depends on pictures so much), there are some really valuable insights to be found for just about everyone with any degree of Asperger's Syndrome. The only improvement I would suggest is that more details on body language reading and face reading be included. For example, when Dr. Baker says to check first whether a potential friend looks receptive, exactly what should one look for in the facial expression and body posture? Dr. Baker gives some details on these things, but I think some Asperger's students might need more specific pointers.
Social Skills picture book..........2007-06-08
The book is in excellent condition, was packaged properly and shipped promptly.
Some of the pictures don't accurately show the body language like I would expect them too. Also, pictures are duplicated in the book for various body languages. Would be nice to have different pictures so as not to confuse the student. But I do think it will be helpful for my daughter to use along with her counselor.
Very Helpful!.......2007-05-25
Although I haven't purchased this book, I have read a copy that I have borrowed from a library, and I think that it is very helpful.
As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until very recent years!
Wonderful Resource........2007-05-07
This book is a wonderful resource for parents and support staff working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Despite its title, it is also excellent for use with middle school students. As a clinical psychologist working with children and adolescents on the autism spectrum, I am recommending this book to all of the teams, along with the original Social Skills Picture Book for the younger children.
Another took in my Social Skills toolbox.......2007-01-30
The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond by Jed Baker is an excellent tool for adolescents who are on the autistic spectrum. The photographs coupled with the dialogue present in a multisensory manner strategies that can be learned and practiced for everyday situations in school and at work. This is a good supplement for direct teaching and modeling offered in the school setting.
Book Description
When educators (and parents) think about gifted kids, they usually focus on their intellectual needs. But gifted kids are much more than test scores and grades. In their second book together, Jim Delisle and Judy Galbraith explain what giftedness means, how gifted kids are identified, and how we might improve the identification process. Then they take a close-up look at gifted kids from the inside out-their social and emotional needs. Topics include self-image and self-esteem, perfectionism, multipotential, depression, feelings of "differentness," and stress. The authors suggest ways to help gifted underachievers and those who are bored in school, and ways to encourage healthy relationships with friends, family and other adults. The final chapter explains how teachers can make it safe to be smart by creating the gifted-friendly classroom. Complete with first-person stories, easy-to-use strategies, survey results, activities, tools for teachers, reproducibles for students, and up-to-date research and resources, this is a book that belongs in every classroom. Includes first-person stories, easy-to-use strategies, survey results, activities, reproducibles, and up-to-date research and resources. This title replaces the Free Spirit classic, MANAGING THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF THE GIFTED.

Practical assistance.......2007-06-12
Some fresh perspectives, especially on underachieving, and very practical. Student's thoughts and input interesting. Good resource for teachers.
All parents and teachers of the gifted should read this book!.......2006-10-22
As an educational psychologist, I often recommend this book (along with the classic, Guiding the Gifted) to parents whose bright or gifted children are struggling with social emotional issues. This is a well-written, easy to use guide that looks at important issues such as self-esteem, self-image, and gifted underachievement. The authors go far beyond identifying these problems and offer lots of practical advice on how to help gifted kids who are struggling at home or at school. Clearly written with lots of sidebar material, checklists, anecdotes, and quotes from gifted kids, parents, and teachers - this book is a joy to read. Another great book on this topic is Gifted Children: Myths and Realities by Ellen Winner
Not Just for Teachers and Parents.......2005-09-22
"When Gifted Kids Don't Have All the Answers" isn't just an excellent book for teachers and parents of gifted children (though it definitely is such a book). I just picked this book up at the local bookstore, and, as a gifted child (well, young adult, now) myself, I can honestly say that this book has been just as much help for me as I think it would be for any teacher or parent, if only because it validates everything about gifted kids that I've known and felt ever since I was little.
I think that every gifted child should have a chance to read this book, if only to understand him- or herself a little bit better, as well as to understand the struggles that teachers and parents of gifted kids go through, trying to teach and parent such children. And I thank the authors very much for writing such an interesting, useful book.
great for teachers.......2002-11-09
This book is exactly what I hoped it would be- it gives solid information on gifted children and suggests ways to help them talk about concerns and challenges that come with the "gifted" label. This book was a wonderful discovery for me-- a brand new teacher of the gifted. (One chapter is devoted to the teacher.) The information in this book is encouraging for those new to the field and provides valuable insights into some of the general characteristics of gifted kids and the issues they face. It has some questionnaires and material that could easily lead you and into meaningful discussions.
Survival Guide for Teachers of Gifted Students.......2002-07-14
I think it is too bad that somehow the title of this book doesn't convey (at least to me) that it is intended for teachers. This could be the companion to the Survival Guides for Gifted Kids. Too bad the title Survival Guide for Gifted Teachers doesn't quite work.
At any rate, I have found the book to be packed with good, concrete suggestions for adding a much needed social and emotional component to any gifted program. It would be wonderful if it were in notebook size, so the questionaires and exercises could just be photocopied, but at least they are laid out well. This book is full of good, workable suggestions and is recommended highly for all teachers, but especially those teachers who deal with gifted students.
Book Description
Is your child getting the right balance of nurturing care that all children need to grow into healthy adults, including the kind of care only a father can give? For years the most trusted child care experts have emphasized the mother/child bond, but this is only half the story. Kids and dads are also biologically hardwired for a different but equally important relationship. In Fatherneed, Dr. Kyle D. Pruett draws on more than two decades of highly acclaimed research at the Yale Child Study Center to offer the first complete understanding of the father's role in child and adult development.
Combining real-life examples from his own child and family psychiatry practice with state-of-the-art research data, Dr. Pruett shows how fathers parent differently and why that difference is so important to a child's physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. Dr. Pruett challenges the time-honored tradition of giving mothers all the credit -- and all the blame -- for how their children turn out. Biological studies of infants show that they seek comfort from moms but crave interaction with their dads. Mothers quickly reassure toddlers when they become frustrated or fearful, whereas fathers encourage their toddlers to tolerate frustration a bit longer, helping them develop into adults with greater reserves of strength in dealing with everyday stress and frustration. And Dr. Pruett's long-term studies show that children who are actively involved with their fathers from birth through adolescence develop more emotional balance, stronger curiosity, and greater self-assurance.
Fatherneed is also a how-to guide for engaged fathering that will give your children the skills to develop into happy and healthy adults. Dr. Pruett specifically addresses what a father can do to prepare his marriage, his house, and his emotions for his child's needs, from infancy through the toddler years, childhood, adolescence, and young and mature adulthood. His advice to fathers is comprehensive and wide-ranging: how to speak to toddlers in language they can understand; how to avoid the common tendency to reinforce gender stereotypes in young children; how to maintain a connection with an increasingly autonomous teenager; how to strengthen one's marriage while facing the challenges of fathering. Divorced fathers, fathers of adopted children, stepfathers, and fathers of special-needs children all face unique challenges, and Dr. Pruett offers step-by-step guidance for coping with every one of these special situations. When fathers are absent, mothers must look elsewhere. Dr. Pruett shows single moms how to be sure that their children are getting the benefit of a male adult's attention.
Successful fathering does not come at the expense of the mother/child bond; in fact it depends on a mother's encouragement. Every mother loves to see the health and happiness in her child, and in the child's father, that result from successful fathering. Through true stories of actual families Fatherneed reveals the infinite varieties of fathering that result when a dedicated father and a supportive mother work together. With wit, authority, and compassion, Dr. Pruett shows how to be sure that your child gets what only a father can provide.
Customer Reviews:
Very, very good book!.......2007-02-12
I used this book as the primary text for a class on Fatherhood at the University of Utah. It is very easy to read and useful. I've recommended it to others and passed it on and they agree. It has language that is easy to understand and thus works well as a text for University study or as a self-improvement advice book. His lists of ideas and recommendations are important. I really hope that this book is not removed from print as I have heard it may be.
Father cheerleading.......2002-09-12
A very repetitive book which is amazing in its poor scholarship and very selective interpretation of research. The intent of the author is to show us all how very, very important fathers are, and he takes this chant to an extreme that is almost humorous in its degree of excess. The generalizations he makes about fathers and how they interact with their children only are true in a minority of the families I know; in most families, there is a mixture of styles depending on the personalities of parents and children. In my own case, I don't relate to his generalities at all, and don't see his pronouncements reflected in my own family.
wonderful.......2002-08-05
I have read many books on the topic and this seems to talk directly to me. No mushy stuff, directly to the point. I also like the fact that it really challenges fathers to take more active role as everyday parent with children.
Overlong, but good for trade.......2000-04-12
Pruett's attempt at expanding what could have been a chapter in an academic text into a self-help book for the masses is admirable. Yes, I think fathers and fathers-in-waiting should skim the book. Some sloppy work: doesn't the author know the difference between Penn and Penn State? But overall, makes a good case, if you can excuse the gratuitous fawning over "single mothers." The "as you'll read in the next chapter" stuff was annoying.
Finally an explination of many of our childrens problems!.......2000-02-27
In this book,so much can be learned about why our children end up doing the things they do, and having the self identity problems they have. I now see that fathers have a connection with their children, not only socially, but in a much deeper sence. This is a must read for all fathers!

Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships and Challenges.......2004-04-19
Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges, written by Garrod, Smulyan, Powers, and Kilkenny (2000), is a collection of personal stories written by college students. The stories consist of the students' recollections of events that occurred during their adolescent years. This book provides much insight into the development of adolescents, while it also aides in the understanding and development of current theories. The case studies collected by the authors are excellent tools for gaining insight into the mind of the adolescent. The authors of the case studies not only narrate events from their past, but also provide personal perspectives as to why they reacted in certain ways and held particular concerns during their adolescent years.
"The way in which we view adolescence depends, to a large extent, on our perceptions of human nature and the relationship of the individual to society" (Garrod et al., 2000, p. 1). Current theories are independently and personally based on such perspectives. Before the authors present the adolescents' case studies, they discuss the various contributors to current adolescent theory. These contributors include theorists such as Locke, Rousseau, Hall, and Mead. By presenting the case studies, the authors show these theories at work.
The case studies are divided into three sections: "Identity," "Relationships," and "Challenges." The first section, "Identity," involves Erikson's Psychosocial Developmental Theory, particularly the stage of "identity verses role confusion." Believed by Erikson to be the dominating challenge during the adolescent years, this stage is characterized by the need to establish one's individuality in the world. According to his theory, it is only after this stage is completed that the individual is ready to develop intimate relationships with others.
In the following section, "Relationships," Erikson's belief of obtaining intimacy only by first successfully achieving personal identity is disputed. Many theorists believe that intimacy may actually be a source of achieving one's personal identity. For example, Sullivan believed that the development of intimacy may be related to relationships with best-friends. It is in these types of relationships that individuals are able to experience, first-hand, how various roles and attitudes are viewed by others. Other types of relationships one might encounter during his or her adolescent years "include close friendships, cliques, peer groups and crowds, and romantic relationships" (p. 132). Furthermore, psychoanalytic theorists such as Anna Freud and Blos believe that adolescence is a critical time of separation from one's parents. Even so, theories maintain that adolescents have a need to preserve a close, meaningful relationship with their families of origin. The case studies that are seen in this section concentrate on the importance of the development and continuity of relationships throughout the adolescent years.
In the final section, "Challenges," the authors present a collection of cases about adolescents who are caught up in various challenges that appear quite difficult to overcome. It is in this section that the authors present the phenomenon of adolescents who grow up in extremely difficult, if not tragic, situations, yet still develop into healthy, successful adults. The challenges presented in this section are "(1) a severe stutter and serious sexual abuse in early childhood, (2) the emotional crisis surrounding an abortion in adolescence, (3) a journey from war refugee to immigrant to the United States and gradual acculturation, and (4) a family breaking apart under the stresses of immigration to the United States and the mental illness of a parent" (Garrod et al., 2000, pp. 249-250).
One might wonder how the adolescents described in the preceding paragraph might manage to live through such tragedy, yet still develop into "normal," healthy adults. According to the authors, "self-understanding is one of the more important aspects of emerging adolescent abilities for overcoming serious challenges" (Garrod et al., 2000, p. 250). It is only with this self-understanding that one might be able to live through such atrocities, yet still continue with healthy physical, emotional, and psychological development.
Though it must be considered that the sample of individuals who wrote the case studies seen in Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges may have higher than average academic markings, it may be understood that it is a fairly average sample. Therefore, the cases presented may be assumed to be typical of "normal" adolescent development. With this assumption, the case studies allow for further development of the theoretical perspectives which are already presented. Furthermore, the case studies leave room for personal evaluation and introspection, both of which may lead to a better understanding of current theories as well as the development of personal theories.
Adolescent portraits: Identity, relationships, and challenge.......2000-06-13
I think that these case studies are a wonderful insight to the work done by the authors Kudos!
Book Description
Working effectively in the classroom setting with young children-those with developmental challenges and those with typical development-is the sole focus of this research-based book written by master teachers. Written in jargon-free language, it will enable teachers, parents and others involved in children's education to create and put into practice top-quality programs that will meet the needs of all children, including those experiencing significant challenges in physical, cognitive, language, social, or behavioral development. When this material is put into practice, every child with his or her own interests and capabilities can be assured optimal and appropriate learning opportunities in a setting where they are included and accepted by other children. To further support each child's learning and growth, particular emphasis has been placed on collaboration with parents in developing their child's intervention program.
Book Description
Not so far back in American history the ideal father was a reliable breadwinner and stern disciplinarian who remained otherwise aloof from day-to-day child rearing duties. But the reality of fatherhood has always been more dynamic than the ideal, and the father's influence on a child's social, emotional, and intellectual development is as profound as it is complex. Over the past two decades, an explosion of research has transformed our understanding of both historical archetypes and contemporary relationships between father and child.
In this third edition of Dr. Michael Lamb's remarkable Role of the Father in Child Development, a team of leading experts provides a complete and up-to-date summary of the current scholarship on fathers and fatherhood, father-child relationships, and the influence of the father on the development of the child. This edition is characterized by a broader view of the social context within which these relationships take place, including ethnicity, marital quality, and the operation of particular ideals of fatherhood.
The book begins with an overview of the father's role, a look at paternal imagery in psychology and religion, and a historical review of the changing ideals of fatherhood. This is followed by an examination of the marital context in which fatherhood conventionally takes place and the different levels, sources, and consequences of paternal involvement with the child. The next four chapters examine the father-child relationship at different stages of the child's development and, taken together, constitute a study in the evolution of this relationship and its effects (both direct and indirect) on child development. The book concludes with explorations of nonconventional or particularly difficult relationships, including those experienced by divorced fathers, stepfathers, gay fathers, adolescent fathers, abusive fathers, and fathers of children with disabilities.
For developmental, family, and clinical psychologists, child psychiatrists, researchers, social workers, and anyone involved in developmental psychology or child custody issues, this book offers rich detail, authoritative analysis, and profound insight into one of the most important relationships that any child will ever have.
