2 out of 5 stars Best for Beginners.......2001-09-11

I thought the 2nd edition would be more high level, as well as include RFP templates etc. However, the book is still very basic and really only appropriate for those with little to no knowledge of web site development and promotion. That should be made clearer in the desciption.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of blah, blah.......2001-01-27

I was very disappointed in this book. It helped me very little when working on our iMarket Plan. There is a lot of text, but very little concrete, substantive information.

1 out of 5 stars For entry-level marketers.......2000-10-16

This book may have some potential for a marketer fresh out of college but it will seem simplistic for the veteran marketer.

5 out of 5 stars Very Handy Guide.......2000-05-17

The second edition of Kim Bayne's "The Internet Marketing Plan" builds on the structure of the earlier edition, and packs more punch, with updated examples, additional subsections and content more relevant to the Internet marketing scenario today. Just as traditional marketing needs a comprehensive marketing plan to succeed, The Internet Marketing Plan shows how a company's online marketing effort can be successful if it is a result of a well thought out Internet marketing plan.

The book along with the accompanying CD-ROM containing templates, spreadsheets, skeletal outlines, and website bookmarks make it an excellent starting point for a newbie in the Internet Marketing business, but it still remains a handy resource for practicing Net marketers.

The book helps the reader create and implement an Internet marketing plan, and measure the results. A step-by-step process helps the reader create a well-structured Internet marketing plan - right from the business overview, to budgets and implementation. Due emphasis is laid on integrating the Internet into the traditional marketing efforts - an often ignored effort of Internet marketing.

Internet advertising is still a business finding its legs, but it is already an important part of most successful commercial sites. And for companies that are not Web-based, the Internet is now an important medium to consider for marketing strategies. In the second edition of Advertising on the Internet, authors and Net advertising professionals Robbin Zeff and Brad Aronson survey the current state of advertising online.

Though many of the concepts the authors present are extensions of traditional advertising issues, the book offers a very comprehensive view of things; even seasoned Webmasters will learn from this title. The various advertising models and techniques are illustrated, with the balance of effectiveness versus user annoyance discussed frequently.

In addition to the technical aspects of getting your word out on the Web, the book also covers special international considerations, legal restrictions and cautions, and targeting techniques, plus it includes a lengthy resource list. Zeff and Aronson's analysis of the Web details how to track site and user statistics to monitor usage patterns and ad effectiveness. Whether you're a techie or not, this book provides some useful insights. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Online ad models, direct marketing, Web measurement, targeting, pricing models, selling ads, buying ads, market research, international advertising, legal issues, and advertising for free (or almost).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Advertising on the internet deserves credibility.......2001-02-07

All advertising professionals working in agencies, media and clients should read this extraordinary book and understand what can be really done with this new media, instead of selling myths that are in part responsible for the downfall of many dot.coms and the global fall in confidence from investors.

3 out of 5 stars ? A Question - When will the next edition be available?.......2000-11-02

PLEASE DO NOT POST AS A REVIEW! Just to be clear, this is not a review.

I was looking for a "link" to ask a question to the authors. I have used this book extensively in one of the classes I teach and the college is about to re-order for upcoming courses.

I am reconsidering the choice because the internet advertising environment has changed significantly in 1 year and 3 months.

When will 3rd edition be available? Please advise: thank you very much.

5 out of 5 stars The best I've seen on this subject........2000-09-19

Granted, there are not a great many books on this subject, but this is definitely the one to read. It gives great insight on the benefits and pitfalls of advertising on this new medium. It does an excellent job of comparing the internet to other advertising options and makes a good case for which traditional advertising concepts apply here, and which do not. I am an advertising and media buyer working exclusively with interactive appliances and I found this book immensely informative. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book.......2000-09-09

This book gives a complete overview of possibilities for online advertising. Although lots of the information sounds very familiar, it's nice to have one book that says it all. I especially liked the extensive use of statistics and other research results of external parties. Naturally the sources of this information is specified each time, which gives you a nice idea where to get more information. The extensive Resource Directory (about 60 pages) is also very useful in telling you were to find more information, both online and offline.

The book also convinced me that it's nearly impossible to build a profitable online presence by advertising income alone. Numerous examples and figures show that you need extremely high traffic, before the advertising revenue is sufficient to cover the high costs of running a content-driven website.

3 out of 5 stars Decent intro, but too much filler........2000-02-09

This is a decent introductory book, but feels like a double-spaced term paper trying to hit a page count.

It covers every aspect and seems as good a place to start as any. Don't try to read it through - use it as a reference book, and skip around to what you need.

It is filled with screen shots (that are always on the next page) and one of those 50-page appendix lists that should be online.

Book Description

You don't have to have the biggest name or the most dazzling graphics to lure customers to your Web site. These days, all you really need is prominent search-engine placement. This book shows you how to get it! With searching one of the most popular Internet activities, a top spot on a major search engine virtually ensures a high volume of visitors--though converting them to buyers is another story. In these pages, top Internet marketer and strategist Catherine Seda tackles both parts of that equation. First, she outlines the strategy involved in buying the specific keyword positions that will lead users directly to the page you want. Then, she describes how you can turn poor-performing ad copy into targeted sales-getters, and how you can evaluate and correct low visitor-to-buyer conversions. Beginning marketers will find the info they need to implement a Web strategy quickly, while advanced marketers will find all kinds of tips for analyzing and improving current results.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Direct and Authoritative.......2006-09-04

The SEO proces can seem daunting and Ms Seda recognizes that fact. She gives a methodical, if not also logical trail to follow and has obviously done laborious research; which pays off. It may appear technical and dry, but the details are necessary to convey the ins and outs of SEO. Bravo and it will remain a part of my business reference library.

3 out of 5 stars It's a Good Read for the Money.......2006-07-06

It's not a bad overview of Search Engine Marketing, but I wouldn't recommend stopping with this read.

Some of the things Catherine covers are good and don't change. As an example, the chapters that provide Copyrighting Tips and that talk about how to improve conversions on Landing Pages. Even though they are only providing a glimpse as to what you need to know, many of those things do not change from year to year.

Other things however are going to require the reader further study. What one needs to focus on today to get good rankings is quite different from the day this book was written.

An example is paid inclusion; someone reading this should know that you don't need to pay to get indexed now. Sitemaps, getting backlinks from ranked sites that get regularly crawled, directories, blogs etc..

But it's good to absorb whatever one can. Even if someone comes away with a few ideas they didn't have before to improve their bottom line, it's worth the small price of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated, outdated, outdated.......2006-04-04

I'm sure this book was cutting edge when it was first published in February of 2004, but now it's for the most part outdated. For the absolute beginner to this area, there are some good general points, but references to long-since defunct or consolidated web companies (Urchin, Inktomi, etc) make it difficult to understand just what's still relevant. Google and Yahoo (and soon Microsoft) are defining the new landscape of this field as we speak...Try the new book from IBM press, "Search Engine Marketing"....chock full of the latest (as late as can be in this field) info.

3 out of 5 stars Good writing, but too vague.......2005-12-14

This book is fairly well-written, but ultimately, it's frustrating because it doesn't tell the reader how to deal with specific search engine ad programs. Instead, Catherine Seda talks about categories of search engine advertising like "Fixed Placement," "Pay for Placement," "Submit URL," and "Trusted Feed." I keep reading these categories and wondering, "Is the model she's referring to here like Google? If so, how is Google different? How do all these programs rate for popularity, bang for the buck, etc.?" I guess Ms. Seda avoided these specifics so that her book didn't look outdated too quickly. I'd rather have a book that was extremely valuable at one point than one that tries to dance around the specific facts I'm craving.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent information about search engine advertising.......2005-10-24

This is an excellent book on search and pay per click advertising. I have read plenty of books, courses and e-books on the subject and find myself consistently going back to this book for advice. Take plenty of notes and a highlighter when you go through this book because you will learn tested strategies that you hope your competition will not know.

Chapter 4 on "Copywriting tips to improve your click-through rate" is a good chapter to help you boost your ad campaigns. Catherine takes the fundamentals of direct marketing and applies it to search advertising. For example, "state a benefit", "offer an incentive", "create a sense of urgency" and "provide a call to action" are necessary to differentiate yourself from the rest.

Creating Stores on the Web fills an important gap in the current crop of e- commerce books, focusing on the general challenges facing would-be online sellers and providing resource pointers for the reader to clear each hurdle. This isn't a technical book but rather a pragmatic walk through all the issues you'll face when hanging your shingle out on the Web.

This book is great for anyone who is curious about how commerce on the Web works. It provides a rather comprehensive overview of each key topic, including business models, marketing, shipping, design, and payment processing. Most readers will be introduced to issues they hadn't even considered previously. The book is chock-full of pointers to real-world sites that either illustrate approaches or provide key services like marketing or payment processing.

Aside from the process of building your own Web store, the authors introduce you to the growing list of commercial sites that enable you to build a virtual presence with little or no upfront investment. Online auctions are also covered.

There are some screen shots, but the majority of the book comprises well-organized text, bulleted lists of options, and tips. Even readers unfamiliar with the Web will follow the discussion easily and get a good grasp on the state of the art of Web selling. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Online market overview, business models, Web success stories, store design, product stocking, promotion, international sales, payment processing, electronic software distribution (ESD), shipping, online auctions, and all-in-one store builders.

Book Description

Who better to give advice on creating and running an online store than a successful online store owner? Let an experienced expert save you time and grief by explaining exactly what you need to survive and profit on the Web. From technical, legal, and software issues to marketing, shipping, distribution, ad banners, customer service, and common-sense philosophy, this book covers everything you need to know to succeed in Web retail.

5 out of 5 stars What a big help!.......2001-08-29

I am really interested in starting my own web store. After reading this book, I really feel like I can do it! This book covers everything and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to start an e-business but has no idea where to start!

5 out of 5 stars Creating Stores on the Web, Second Edition.......2001-03-08

If you are interested in finding information on the wide range of knowlege required to be a successful web store owner, this book is a great place to start.

This book is co-authored by a man who started a fledgling web-based business in 1993. Through his experience and successes you get all the tools you need to make informed decisions on your web design. You can go to his website and see that all the ideas he outlines for you in the book are in practice on his website.

I am a computer technician who is researching starting my own web based business to sell custom framed wedding invitations. I have read many books and articles in my research. I found this book and one other to be an incredible asset (101 Ways to Promote your Web Site). Both these books are written in "lay-mans" terms that any beginner would be able to understand.

A must have for anyone who wants to know where to start with creating their own web-based business.

1 out of 5 stars Creating Store for Dummies.......2000-08-08

If there will be a new edition for the book here I suggest a new topic `Creating Stores on the Web for Dummies`. This book is nothing if you have a little bit knowledge about how any kind of business is done and internet. So if you want to learn on this subject try another one.

3 out of 5 stars Good choice if you don't know anything about e-selling.......2000-06-29

If you don't know anything about setting up a virtual store, this book will show you the basics. But be carefull ! It's quite out of date, and much of the info you'll find in it is obsolete

5 out of 5 stars A invaluable "how to" guide for online entrepreneurs........2000-05-05

The second edition of Creating Stores On The Web by Ben Swayer, et.al is even more valuable: it provides many basics on online selling options, from using Amazon zshops and Yahoo Store to setting up an individual site. An invaluable 'must', this answers questions ranging from accepting international payments and tracking shipping costs to accepting credit cards online.

Vince and other readers, I just ordered *eight more copies* of 'How to Grow Your Business,' to add to the one I already own. I plan on giving one to each member of my staff, because they keep asking me questions that are already answered so clearly in the book. And I will have a couple of copies to give away to friends, just in case. I have seen Vince speak at conferences, and he really knows his stuff. He's low-key, has top-notch integrity, and cares about people. I have not found a more useful book on the subject, nor a nicer, more knowledgeable consultant. He gets my highest recommendation. --Peter Johnson-- Chief Vision Holder, www.GreenJungle.com

Dear Mr. Emery: I am very sorry to have to register this complaint about your book. I was halfway through reading it when I suddenly realized the book was such a valuable asset that I could no longer keep it in my house. I now keep the book at my bank in a safe deposit box. Unfortunately, this means I can only access the book during banking hours. This is really frustrating because your book is the most fact-filled and comprehensive source of doing business on the Internet I have been able to find (and believe me I've been looking!). Please do not write any more books as I only have a very small safe deposit box (besides the people in the bank are starting to look at me suspiciously because of my frequent visits to the vault). Operators of small business have always been attracted to the Internet's seemingly bottomless supply of ready customers, but their hopes can quickly be dashed by the competitive realities of business on the Web. Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions aims to take the entrepreneur by the hand and show him or her how to draw attention to an Internet resource without spending a lot of money.

What the authors present is a sort of guerrilla model for online business in which you use your apparent weaknesses to your advantage. You might, for example, exploit your woefully low traffic level by delivering an extraordinary level of attention to the customers you do have. The idea is that good news spreads, and the publishers of Web resources should provide lots of good things for their visitors to pass along. You can also go outside your customer base to attract visitors without buying banner ads--you can join a professional association or a Web ring, for example.

In addition to their particular brand of marketing advice, authors Peter Kent (who also wrote the excellent Poor Richard's Web Site) and Tara Calishain do a fine job of explaining more pedestrian technical subjects, such as how to prepare your pages for listing on search engines. --David Wall

Topics covered: Audience identification, basic page design and coding, registering with search engines, creating newsletters and other mailing lists, joining affiliate programs, filing press releases, and tracking reactions.

Book Description

Here is commonsense advice on how to market and promote on the Internet. This book contains methods for getting the word out in cyberspace using electronic press releases, discussion groups, electronic newsletters, product giveaways, opt-in E-mail, and more. It explains sales techniques such as the puppy-dog close, 100 percent guarantees, and selling benefits rather than products. Unlike other books on this topic, this is a down-to-earth explanation of how to market on the Internet from an author with extensive Internet marketing experience.

A few weeks ago, I ordered a book from Poor Richard's Web site. I was familiar with Peter Kent's email marketing newsletter. I had perused his website extensively. I was aware that he was one hell of an internet marketer, but I was not fully prepared for the extent of his marketing know- how until I read "Poor Richard's Internet Marketing and Promotions".

The second book in the widely praised "Poor Richard's" series that began with "Poor Richard's Web Site" published by Top Floor Publishing. Kent has earned rave reviews from Amazon.com to Fortune.com to USA Today to Windows magazine for his outstanding knowledge of internet marketing and design.

This book is invaluable to any and every internet marketer. It covers everything from using low-cost press releases to reach hundreds of journalists to giving away products at other peoples' Web sites to preparing your Web site for successful search-engine registration to using associate programs to multiply your sales presence on the Internet to using awards to bring people to your site to buying advertising without breaking the bank to using newsletters your own and other people's to promote your website.

Every page in this book is a goldmine, with internet links and fantastic advice on how to not waste your valuable time online, earn a decent income with online sales tools, and how to do it all on a budget!

To top it off, some of the advice is also available for off- line use as well as he uses simple and effective marketing promotion techniques.

This book is my new personal internet marketing bible, and I'd strongly suggest you make it yours as well!

3 out of 5 stars A decent book on marketing and promotion........2001-06-18

I found this book to be best for covering the basics of marketing and promotion on the internet. However, as is the problem with many internet books, the links and e-mail addresses offered in the book are out of date and don't work. Despite this problem, the book is very helpful and full of good information.

We had high aspirations and scrupulously read this book looking for guidance, all to no avail. This book contains incorrect and misleading information. We tried the various links for additional data many of which were no longer on the web. Others that we contacted via e-mail the response was not what was designated in the book. Peter and Tara provide their e-mail addresses, but they neither respond nor answer questions. The only conclusion that one can draw is that they crank out the books just to sell them and make a quick dollar. They don't really intend to be there for the consumer. This book was a total waste of money. The only thing that it is good for is the garbage or fireplace.

We have since spoken with others who purchased the book and they were also disgusted and very disappointed. This book was a total waste of money. The only thing that it is good for is the garbage or fireplace.
