Book Description
The Economic Way of Thinking develops the basic principles of micro- and macroeconomic analysis, and rigorously employs them as tools rather than ends unto themselves. This book introduces readers to a method of reasoning; to think like an economistteaching through example and application. It even teaches by showing learners how not to think, by exposing them to the errors implicit in much popular reasoning about economic events. Chapter topics include opportunity cost and the supply of goods, supply and demand, profit and loss, competition and monopoly, price searching, competition and government policy, the distribution of income, markets and government, the overall performance of economic systems, the supply of money, monetary and fiscal policies, national policies and international exchange, employment and unemployment, promoting economic growth, and the limitations of economics. For individuals seeking a deeper understanding of the effects of world events on the economy and vice versa.

Nice effort, but falls way short........2006-04-27
I was reading the reviews for this book, both 11th edition and 10th edition, and was surprised to be the only reviewer that disagrees with the quality of this book. The authors tried to teach Economics in a totally different way, no graphs, no tables, no data, etc. and failed miserably.
The fact that there aren't any graphs, pie charts, etc. makes it hard to follow especially if you're more a visual person. It has a hokey "down home" feel to it that doesn't connect, except in a geeky-dork way. And the book is disorganized in terms of the material covered.
In short, the book is written like a novel or a story, NOT as a textbook. If you enjoyed "The Worldly Philosophers" by Robert Heilbronner, you'll like reading this book. But to use it as an Economics textbook, BIG MISTAKE. THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST TEXTBOOKS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN ANY COLLEGE SUBJECT OUT THERE.
I give it an F or 1 out of 5.
Enjoyable........2006-01-09
I used this book as an essential study material for my MacroEconomics course at UCBerkeley. I enjoyed it immensely.
The book is organized into 22 chapters and takes you through what could be termed as a more of libertarian, laissez faire form of markets.
It begins with the assertion that it is very difficult to approach the process of economic exchange with an open mind. And that there is a need for a framework. And I agree. Then it gives you a typical example of rush-hour traffic to illustrate and then explain the importance of "agreement on certain rules" in order to ensure co-operation which facilitates transaction.
And then it takes you through the supply and demand PROCESS (rather than STRUCTURE), Elasticity, Price-searchers/takers, MR/MC, importance of price discrimination, price-controls (and perils thereof) etc and then back to the macroeconomic issues (role of Fed, Government, Treasury, inflation, externalities, regulation).
This book (as its title indicates) tends to blur the boundries between Macro and Micro.
Some of the salient features -
1) Uses more enonomics and less mathematics (Paul Krugman's approach).
2) A lot of emphasis on Marginalism.
3) Claims to be simple (e.g. The preface opens up with an important question - Why are so many introductory economics courses taught as if every student is going on to acquire a PhD in the subject?) And the book tends to live by the expectation.
4) The tone is a lot more prescriptive that you could imagine.
5) Maintains that the term Monopoly is very hard to define.
6) Goes close to Austrian school.
7) All in all approaches the economic theory as a process rather than structure.
I will certainly recommend this one to a beginner. And if you are more of left-of-center then this one is for you if you want to understand the other side of the argument.
One of the best Economic textbooks I've read.......2004-07-14
Heyne begins w/ the first principles of economics: how human beings interact on a mass scale, and the positive consequences of those actions, and the negative consequences of interferring w/ voluntary human interaction. He then carries the reader through the traditional economic concepts of Supply and Demand, Specialized Labor, Externalities...all focused through the lens of the "Economic Way of Thinking".
Make no mistake--this book is a substantive, philosophical refutation of "Statism". Heyne hits Comparative Advantage, Price Theory, Rule of Law, and Private Property hard (in the affirmative), and if you're for tariffs, regulated prices, arbitrary Gov't intervention, and public property, your views won't be validated. All the more reason for you to read this book, and understand why so many stamp their foot down against politicized economic policies that superficially sound and feel so good. Heyne's lesson is to think on a macro-scale, think about the unintended consequences of mass social change, for that is the Economic Way of Thinking.
Comparative Advantage in Price Theory.......2004-04-24
Heyne's text explains what it explains well. It is a good Freshman level price theory text. Its strengths are in explaining informational and coordination issues in markets. It does more to explain how the price system works as a communications network than any other text I have seen. It also explains the issues of property rights and transactions costs clearly.
When it comes to the public sector, it is vastly better than many other texts. There are other texts, like Gwartney and Stroup, and Ekelund and Tollinson, which are arguably better at explaining the public sector.
The biggest weaknesses of this book are in macro and international economics. Its chapters on money are ok, but it explains far too little about trade cycles. It has some good material on growth, but could explain more and in more detail. The chapter on international economics could go further as well. The shortcomings of this book likely reduce its sales. So, it seems that the marginal benefits of such revisions exceed their marginal costs.
Heyne is no longer around to revise this book, but the co-authors who took over for him could improve this book greatly for the next edition.
Outstanding.......2002-08-07
Dr. Heyne was an outstanding professor. In fact, the most memorable and influential of my college "career." You will understand from reading his books how brilliant he was.

Everyone needs this book!.......2007-09-19
Kevin Hogan is a great storyteller that makes something as complicated as Persuasion techniques seem easy. His humor and dedication to the reader in presenting the information manner that is easy to understand is greatly appreciated. I highly recommend this book to any one trying to gain a competitive edge. The section in the book explaining where to sit in a resturant is worth the price of the book alone! Priceless.
Buy this Master Guidebook for Your Library!.......2007-09-13
As an avid student of persuasion and influence, I'd say this is one of the more readable and comprehensive books on how to communicate with and influence others. It is complete, concise and well written. Kevin Hogan helps you stop thinking "magic" when it comes to persuasion and shows you the who, what, when, where, why and HOW.
If you are in an applied sales profession (entrepreneur, sales, marketing, attorney, etc.), use this book and you will see results in your business. Great Information - Buy This Book.......2007-09-12
This book is a must read for anyone in sales - period
This is a very well written book. It is a great tool for anyone who makes a living by having to persuade and influence others. Kevin Hogan has a very simplified process with his "Paradigm of Persuasion" approach which is built on a win-win philosophy for both the seller and the customer.
I really like the detail and examples that the author has provided in this book. Dr. Hogan speaks to the "laws" of persuasion and various ethical persuasion techniques. He also describes in detail how non verbal communication and proxemics have a direct impact on the customer's buying decision criteria. This book also goes into great detail on building instant rapport with the customer and how to effectively communicate with the different personality styles.
This book is definitely one, that after you have read it, will become a reference book for years to come.
If you haven't got this book then you are missing out!.......2007-09-10
This book is where it all starts, fills in all the details others miss out and finishes all your curiosity about why and how to influence people.
The 9 laws of persuasion are real gems and can be easily and quickly be placed into any selling environment.
Reciprocity, Expectancy, Consistency the list is one in which you'll want to remember as you will rely on their information for many many years.
I can personally vouch that this book as well as other from Kevin Hogan has literally transformed my selling, my social interaction and career path.
I can not stress how much every person involved in persuading (every one) needs to own a copy of this master piece.

Buy for everyone you know.......2007-03-13
This book is a quick and fun read. I made it a point to read one title a day, which turns out to be a two page spread. The concepts are driven home with incredible supporting photos and powerful text treatments.
highly motivating book for sure!.......2007-03-05
Dr. Cramer is rock star in the area of "the glass is half full" thinking! This book is a great read and re-read to cement good, positive, motivated, lean-forward behaviors. And I for one appreciate the reminder and the helpful tips. It's also a book that's well laid out so that I can refer back to key sections easily! Kudos to Kathy and Hank for summing up life's lessons so well!
Entertaining & creative book.......2006-08-23
This is an entertaining book with a creative approach to concepts in Positive Psychology. Its style and content is a reflection of the combined efforts of a psychologist (K Cramer)& a creative advertising executive (H Wasiak).
The presentation of concepts is clear, simple and straightforward. It breaks down into categories of: How you see yourself; How you see others; and How you see Situations. The main concept promoted is to use Asset Based thinking as oppossed to Deficit Based thinking (which parallels many concepts of positive psychology)
The chapters and concepts are enhanced with thought provoking visual pictures, interesting charts, some personal stories, and great graphics. This presentation makes it easy to read, and even useful if you want to use material for lectures or classes.
For a rigorous clinician or coach, the exercises they recommend throughout the book are not especially powerful or unique. In addition, they make very few references to psychological studies to support claims about the effectiveness of Asset Based Thinking.
Forget Perfection.......2006-07-18
This book truly brought positive and new insight into my life. As a person who often veers towards a path of perfection the wisdom of this book reminded me that trying to do everything flawlessly is not the key to success. Instead, taking the "magnify what's best and focus on what's next" approach has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and happiness for me. The simple but powerful messages, accompanied by the inviting photographs found inside the book will engage all readers and help them to make the most of their assets.
Book Description
This is the first textbook in microeconomics written exclusively for MBA students. McKenzie/Lee minimizes attention to mathematics and maximizes attention to intuitive economic thinking. The text is structured clearly and accessibly: Part I of each chapter outlines the basic theory and Part II applies this basic theory to management issues. 'Perspective' sections in each chapter provide a new line of argument or different take on a business or policy issue, and carefully chosen topics and review questions are designed to spark lively and instructive debates. The accompanying DVD contains modules of Professor McKenzie talking informally with students, and elucidates complex lines of argument as well as acting as a revision aid. Throughout the book, McKenzie and Lee aim to infuse students with the economic way of thinking in the context of a host of problems that MBA students, as future managers of real-world firms, will find relevant to their career goals.

Out of the box thinking.......2006-10-23
We are currently using this book in our EMBA program. Yes, it is not the same text books that we are used to but it shows new ways, microeconomic ways, of thinking which can be applied to our daily business and life.
A Must Have for Every MBA.......2006-07-06
I'm in an executive MBA program and this text was extremely valuable. I highly recommend it.
In-depth coverage of the subject matter........2006-07-01
As an MBA student learning Economics, I found Dr. McKenzie's textbook and video modules to be an outstanding way to learn. The videos allowed me to conveniently review, pause, rewind and re-review specific points. The textbook was also very useful, and complemented the video modules well by providing in-depth coverage of the subject matter.
I'd recommend the course material to any MBA studying economics.
Exceptional and recommended.......2006-07-01
Professor McKenzie's book and lecture turned over a new leaf. His book is effective because he talks about scenarios (economical or non-economical) that the MBA reader can relate to. Who would have thought that microeconomics can be applied to the hiring process of a professor from 6 mile South Carolina to work at La Jolla, CA???? Anyhow, Professor McKenzie's course and text is exceptional and I recommend it to any economics enthusiast, MBA or non-MBA.

Good Presentation of Yet Another RCA Method.......2006-01-07
This was a good-great book for the Apollo method but as one who has read a lot of these types of books, e.g., TQM, I found the sales pitch a little strong. The explanations were excellent with a step-by-step development, but I see nothing special here. Almost any RCA book will provide similar material. An alternative to this book could be: "Root Cause Analysis A tool for total quality management," or "Quality Improvement Toos & Techniques." The later is an excellent overview of the methods available for investigating problems --- and it is fairly inexpensive. I recommend Dean Gano's book if the Apollo RCA is your flavor.
A unique approach.......2004-01-22
Apollo is the name given by the author to his unique approach to root cause analysis. I'm assuming this (Apollo) explains why there is a naked man on the cover, either that or this is the most unique author photo I have ever seen. The book focuses on causal relationships, emphasizing that there are often many causes (factors) contributing to an undesirable outcome. The author's insights on casual relationships and human behavior are extraordinary, it is obvious he is passionate about this topic and has had extensive experience with it. In addition to explaining " A new way of thinking", the author details specific tools (his own version of a cause-and-effect chart) that are the core of the Apollo method. And just when I started thinking that it would be great if there was software available to do this, he mentions that he has such a product available.
There were a few things I didn't like about the book. In fact, after receiving the book, the combination of the naked dude on the cover (which still creeps me out) and the opening paragraph in the "How to read this book" section which you just have to say "Duh!" to, almost convinced me to not read the book at all. In addition, the branding of "Apollo" throughout the book ( frequent references to "the Apollo method", "the Apollo process", "Apollo tools") made some sections read like scripts from an infomercial. These are minor gripes though, and I'm glad I got by them and took the time to read this excellent book
Great introductory work.......2002-05-02
I teach root cause analysis and have been a practicing failure analyst for nearly 15 years. I've had the priviledge of working with some very expert people in this field. Dean Gano does a great job taking what can be a very confusing and intimidating task and making it clear and understandable.
Dean Gano has been honing his craft for many years and is well respected in the failure analysis community. The only criticism I have is that the process is more geared to providing supporting evidence for possible causes of events. There needs to be more discussion of the need for refuting evidence.
Cause analysis at its best is a structured application of scientific principles (referred to as the scientific method). What the scientific method requires is that you pose a hypothesis (a possible explanation for what has happened) and then gather evidence to support or refute the hypothesis.
I recommend that anyone interested in a better understanding of how refuting evidence is used read "The Rational Manager" by Chuck Kepner and Ben Tregoe. It's the foundational work that provides a complete solution for resolving concerns (problems, decisions, etc). The "Rational Manager" has you break things down and deal with them separately. Dean Gano's book helps you see the larger picture. The other book I use as required reading for our root cause analysts is "Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents" by James Reason. Together, these three references will help you to significantly improve your ability to resolve problems and will be the three books you will refer to over and over again.
A "Must Read" for anyone investigating failure incidents.......2002-02-02
After several years of pumping equipment failure analysis engineering, this is by far the best book I've read about the failure analysis and problem solving process. Dean Gano's approach covers the full spectrum of associated issues in a very efficient and flexible manner. He challenges a lot of failure analysis "conventional wisdom" in a very convincing manner, truly creating "a new way of thinking" that should greatly improve failure solutions.
Excellent for doing Med Error Root Cause Analysis..........2001-06-28
Read several books and this seems to get to the heart of the matter in the least amount of time. Book is well written, to the point and will get you going within 24 hours.
Book Description
Good thinking. It's the one thing all successful people have in common. People who achieve their dreams understand the critical relationship between their level of thinking and their level of progress-and they know that when thinking is limited, so is potential. Now, John C. Maxwell explores this idea and identifies the specific skills people need to make their potential for success explode into results. From focused and creative thinking to thinking of the big picture or the bottom line, he provides examples of effective thinking for every situation. This book doesn't tell readers what to think, it teaches them how to think. After all, success is as simple as changing your mind.

Excellent book for the people looking for Improving the leadership skills.......2007-09-26
this is one another classic from John Maxwell. There are lot many things explained in this book that can help us in our daily life, profession/ business..
We are what we think. This book will help you do it better........2007-07-08
I generally enjoy Dr. Maxwell's books. This one, however, is one of my favorites because it deals with one of my favorite subjects: Thinking. Maxwell explains how to think more creatively; how to use shared thinking; how to focus your thinking and many other lessons dealing with the subject of thinking. Earl Nightingale got me thinking on paper a long time ago, Maxwell introduced me to the "thinking chair", which is a place where you can go and think about challenges in a consistent basis. This habit really is life-changing. In a life where our ability to think will determine our future more than any connection, college degree or upbringing, is nice to know that we have books like this one that can guide us into more effective ways to use our thinking apparatus. It has been said that we sometimes need more reminding than learning, this book will help you remember what countless other philosophers and sages have said throughout the ages: Our life is and will always be a reflection of our thinking. Enjoy!
Think, and change your life.......2007-05-23
If you change your thinking, you can change your life - that's the authors premise. As any self-help book, this one has numerous overlaps with similar works, but don't let that dissuade you from picking it up, it is a great book. John C. Maxwell offers 11 concise lessons on how to improve your thinking and channel your energy towards your true aspirations. Sprinkled throughout are a number great quotes and examples - even if you're a seasoned veteran of the self-help section, this one will help you reinforce the lessons learned.
great concept.......2007-03-15
we see most of what Maxwell has written in our daily lives but I never managed to put it all together. Great idea John, it clears it up for me and helps me "think" better and more efficiently. great book.
Maxwell's Clear Presentation = Excellent Book.......2007-02-28
I have been impressed with every John Maxwell book I have read. This one is no exception. Maxwell presents his ideas on how thinking can change your life clearly and backs them up with stories, quotes, and examples of how people have changed their life by altering their thoughts. But the ideas are not completely original. Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" promised many of the same results by changing your thoughts more than fifty years earlier. Yet, Maxwell's book is still worth reading, not because of the uniqueness of the book's concepts, but rather for the presentation of such. He makes it easy for someone wanting to change their life by including exercises at the end of each chapter that, I am convinced, would put one on the path towards excellence. If you want to change your life for the better, begin with Maxwell, an excellent leader and motivator who walks the walk to give credibility to everything he says.

Different by Design.......2007-05-20
To counter some of the negative reviews, consider this -- they don't get it. Indeed, it was only in reading the introductions of the 10th edition that I gained a deeper understanding of what I already knew to be the brilliance of Paul Heyne. He left the academic restrictions of SMU to be granted the freedom at the University of Washington to introduce his new way of thinking about economics.
Having been taught economics by these principles it took me a long time to understand why when I talk about economics it seems to be at odds with others...my perspective is clearly different based on these fundamental principles.
Indeed, there are several compelling tributes to Paul Heyne and his approch to economic thinking: 1) There is an 11th edition...a second edition beyond his death, that bears his name, 2) The 10th edition includes a reference to Ph.D.s in economics suggesting that they had a deeper understanding of their own discipline by reading this book.
Contrary to another review, economics is NOT about charts...that's the message Paul illustrates in his concepts. Economics is a way of thinking about the world around us. Those who fail to embrace it in this way will miss the potential that it holds: helping us to understand the dynamics of decision making.

Humor in Economics.......2005-10-09
I found this book very comprehensible which made for a quick read. The authors even have a sense of humor which made the book more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this text for any reader or student who dreads having to read a dry, standard economics textbook. The examples are witty and relatable, making for an easy, enjoyable read.
Very different way of teaching economics - I like it.......2005-08-05
I recently took a course that used this as the main textbook. When I read the book the first time before the course started, I didn't like it at all and was thinking of dropping the course. But after the course started and the professor went over the material in greater detail, I began to understand and appreciate why the authors chose to write the book this way, instead of in the way most conventional textbooks are written -- define and explain new terms or concepts, etc.
Like other conventional economic textbooks, the Economic Way of Thinking teaches major concepts in micro and macro economics (such as supply and demand, inflation, GDP, etc.) but teaches them in a much more engaging way -- not just a collection of facts, definition of terms or concepts, etc. The authors pointed out the importance and subtlety in each new term or concept. That gave me additional insight into the material in the book. I also found the exercises at the end of the chapters very useful.

Breakthrough Thinking you will learn the seven steps consistently used by those who solve problems most creatively. —Warren Bennis, co-author of Leaders
"I've used

—William Chandon, Organizational Competency Building, Corporate Knowledge Program, Computer Sciences Corporation

Customer Reviews:
Not quite a breakthrough.......2004-01-18
It's fair to say that the breakthrough touted by the authors occured quite some time back - I don't think that any of the 7 principles suggested could be said to be new or even that they are brought together in a new framework.
Regardless, if you haven't used these principles before then it is likely to be something of a breakthrough. The authors present a remarkably well planned overview of the steps needed to come to creative solutions to problems.
Many readers are likely to find hints of De Bono, Senge and even some NLP in the reading. That shouldn't detract from the book though - it brings some rather disparate structures together to achieve an extremely beneficial approach to thinking and problem solving.
4 stars because it could have been edited down by 50 pages without detracting from the message.
Many thanks to Professors Nadler and Hibino.......2003-01-07
This is an excellent book. It is well written. The authors have excellent credentials and convincingly outline the seven principles of creative problem solving in the most lucid terms.
Readers will find that many of the individual ideas, concepts, considerations and perspectives are familiar. However, as Proust stated, the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Professors Nadler and Hibino show that you, and any group that you are part of, can significantly increase your chances of achieving breakthroughs if you adopt a certain approach to solving problems and making decisions. It is a purpose-directed approach. The focus is on the solution, not the problem.
They proceed to outline this approach in some detail. It includes a holistic set of steps to guide your use of the seven principles. They also describe a number of optional tools. When adapted to your own style and circumstances, and used in context, these tools really do maximise your chances of achieving breakthroughs e.g.
· `Exploration and expansion of purposes' enables you to creatively find the right problem to work on
· `Solution after next' helps to unfetter the team's creativity, to rise above current limitations, wrong assumptions and misconceptions - whether conscious or subconscious - and to ensure that today's solution is future-oriented and innovative
· `System matrix' facilitates a comprehensive consideration of all aspects of a solution thus maximising the chances of successful implementation
The thinking skills outlined in this book and ensuing practice can serve you well for the rest of your life. These skills are so fundamental, they can be beneficially applied in countless ways and in countless situations - both business and personal.
I first read this book six months ago and have no hesitation in recommending it.
Nothing new!.......2002-11-30
This book is incredibly tedious to read. I don't agree with previous reviewers that its worth the slog. There was nothing new or innovative in the concepts extolled in the book - this is just another methodology to get you from A to B (or maybe A to C if you adopt the Solution After Next principle). Like all methodologies, you can very quickly lose sight of where you're going because there's so much involved in working your way through the 7 principles. Also, didn't anyone else find the idea of the System Matrix overkill? I mean you could spend months working on a System Matrix before you got to move onto the next stage - an onerous task in the extreme. If you want to read this book, go ahead - it won't do you any harm. You may feel as excited about it as previous reviewers here. I guess all I'm saying is that its not for everybody.
A Book Every Problem Solver and Decision Maker Should Read.......2002-05-09
Stephen Covey observed the main problem we face often is not the problem itself but how we see it. Breakthrough Thinking, like Why Didn't I Think of That? - Think the Unthinkable, changes the way you approach problems by challenging your old perspectives and giving you new tools for obtaining deeper, clearer insights into problems and decisions at hand. This ia a book to place on the shelf where you keep your most prized works, the ones you reread over and over again.
Solve Problems More Effectively.......2001-06-20
I'd have to agree with the majority of other reviews here: this book is definitely a "reader and keeper." Yes, it is somewhat hard to get through; the writing style isn't easy, but it changed the way I thought about projects in my business. The seven principles have broad applicability in solving life's problems. I first read this book in 1991 and I've re-read it a couple of times since to refresh myself on the concepts.
