4 out of 5 stars A good book but with too many mistakes.......2006-12-09

I have been using a few editions of this book in the last few years and I am going to use it again soon but the 12th edition had too many mistakes. Later I saw the corrections for the mistakes on the book's site but even the corrections had a few mistakes.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-29

I used this text in my MBA stats class and have found it to be very informative and useful. I found the examples for Excel and Minitab to be well written and of great use. I would recommend this book for anyone who uses statistics on a frequent basis or simply would like a good reference manual in their library.

1 out of 5 stars 12th ed. has problems.......2006-05-04

The 12th edition of this book contains a surprising number of errors. I am currently using this book for a statistics course in an MBA program. We are twelve chapters into the book now and in most every chapter I have found a mistake; more often than not there are multiple mistakes. What is worse is that the majority of the mistakes are in the practice problems which are where the student learns to apply the skills. This serves to create confusion and frustration on the student's part. Some of the mistakes are sloppy editing while others more significant are providing wrong information. The editors need to take another look at this book and the authors should also take note.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book - faulty cover!.......2007-09-01

The book is a comprehensive review of 6Sigma tools and 6Sigma Project management life cycle. Hard reading. Recommended if there is no fault with the book! This suppose to be a new book from amazon.com I can not send it back as this is very heavy and I need it!!

5 out of 5 stars Book " Implementing 6 sigma: Smarter solutions using statistical methods".......2007-05-26

Excellent condition of the book, as they mentioned, it arrived on time according to what the deal was, this is an excellent vendor

5 out of 5 stars The must-have on every six sigma shelf.......2006-11-12

I have been using this book for the past few years and it continues to be the most valuable Six Sigma resource on my bookshelf. It is the most complete and practical Six Sigma book you will find, and worth every dollar. Every six sigma black belt I have worked with owns a copy of this book

This book is absolutely packed with useful examples - providing you with both the formulas to solve the Six Sigma tests, and also the solutions.

This is a manufacturing-centric six sigma book. If you are dedicated to service application of six sigma, I would recommend reading "Six Sigma for Transactions and Service."

If you are interested in learning about six sigma, or are a green-belt or a process improvement or enterprise modeler, this probably isn't the book for you. However if you are a black belt and apply six sigma methods on a consistent basis, this is a must-read ...

5 out of 5 stars Implementing Six Sigma Review.......2006-02-28

I have read multiple books on Six Sigma, but "Implementing Six Sigma", is by far the most practical with a perfect balance of statistical concepts and everyday examples. Finally, there is a book that can show Executives, there is a better way, a true management system that links strategic objectives to bottom-line results. This book is a must for all Six Sigma practioners.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only Six Sigma book you will need.......2006-02-26

This is the only Six Sigma book that covers all aspects of the methodology. You will not find another book that analyses every aspect of Six Sigma so deeply and yet, in a way that makes it so easy to understand.
As a professional of Six Sigma, I have been through every book about the subject that deserves attention but none of them comes anywhere close to Breygogle's "Implementing Six Sigma". Not only does the second edition cover the Lean methodology, but it also delves into the Theory OF Constraints and very clearly shows how it can be used for Six Sigma project selections.
No wonder why this book is the only one recommended by ASQ for their Six Sigma Black Belt preperation and no wonder why Breyfogle won the Crosby Medal.
Great book! I give it a 5 plus.

Book Description

Applying this revolutionary management strategy to drive positive change in an organization
Currently exploding onto the American business scene, the Six Sigma methodology fuels improved effectiveness and efficiency in an organization; according to General Electric's Jack Welch, it's the "most important initiative [they] have ever undertaken." Written by the consultant to GE Capital who helped implement Six Sigma at GE and GE's General Manager of e-Commerce, Making Six Sigma Last offers businesses the tools they need to make Six Sigma work for them--and cultivate long-lasting, positive results. Successful Six Sigma occurs when the technical and cultural components of change balance in an organization; this timely, comprehensive book is devoted to the cultural component of implementing Six Sigma, explaining how to manage it to maintain that balance. The authors address how to create the need for Six Sigma; diagnose the four types of resistance to Six Sigma and how to overcome them; manage the systems and structures; and lead a Six Sigma initiative. This book applies the Six Sigma approach to business operations across the organization--unlike other titles that focus on product development. Plus, it provides strategies, tactics, and tools to improve profitability by centering on the relationship between product defects and product yields, reliability, costs, cycle time, and schedule.
George Eckes (Superior, CO) is the founder and principal consultant for Eckes & Associates. His clients include GE Capital, Pfizer, Westin, Honeywell, and Volvo. Eckes has published numerous papers on the topic of performance improvement and is the author of The Six Sigma Revolution: How General Electric and Others Turned Process into Profits (0-471-38822-X) (Wiley).

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-03-02

George Eckes' experience in quality control includes an instance where he had the temerity, just out of college, to ask W. Edwards Deming, then an octogenarian, to elaborate on his views about quality. "Those are the most stupid questions I have ever heard! Go read some of my books," the cantankerous quality czar responded. No one reading this volume can doubt that Eckes has done his homework ever since. His blend of experience, theoretical expertise and common sense make this a very effective Six Sigma manual, although it is a little light on case studies. One of the book's most valuable elements is Eckes' keen analysis of the pitfalls that can flush all your best Six Sigma intentions down the tubes, even as a row of consultants tell you it is a panacea for all your woes. We recommend this book to anyone who is about to call a consultant and venture into the Rasputin world of Six Sigma.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars= Six Sigma.......2003-09-28

Having read or attempted to read an assortment of books on Six Sigma, I must say this one was an easy, informative read. The book reads like what it is, written by a person who has taught people Six Sigma skills for years. The author seems to have used Six Sigma tools on his teachings. He has found out what areas people have had trouble comprehending and has come up with easier ways of explaining it or provides examples.
Could you read this book and come away knowing everything about Six Sigma there is to know. No, but this book will keep you interested, give you an excellent start. You could accomplish quite a bit with the tools provided here.
I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in Six Sigma. If you are in business today and aren't aware of the ideas of Six Sigma you are missing out.
I do have to admit to being a follower of W. Edwards Deming management methods for years and have always had a problem with Six Sigma "gurus" not admitting to using many of his ideas. I'm sure it helped win me over to see George Eckes giving Dr. Deming credit where credit is due.

4 out of 5 stars The best book on Six Sigma.......2002-08-09

I like the explanations and the format of this book. Sometimes authors try to help by including strange diagrams that confuse you. This book is simple and to the point, from a person who knows how to explain things. Other books I have seen just describe what Six Sigma is or try to show why the discipline works but nothing more. I would have liked a bit more technical definitions and procedures. I hope this author makes an expanded 6Sigma book with more technical stuff, clear color charts , better paper quality, and to follow a project though from begining to end. Another great book (although with similar limitations) is Design for Six Sigma, by Subir Chowdhury.
Buy them both and compare the two disciplines.

5 out of 5 stars Real-Life Success Stories are Through-Out the Book.......2002-08-08

The six sigma benefits are process management, improvement, and measurement implemented daily. Top company leaders recognize the six sigma is synonymous with constant reinvention of their business and gain success through sustained customer satisfication both internally and externally. Six Sigma business are held the highest standards of 3.4 defects per million opportunities. The belief that tool usage used for measuring results should be easy and simple. The silo-breaking effort produces strong communication and collaboration throughout the company. Core competence is improved as the company makes a strong commitment to learning and training as the standard. The six sigma way involves increase expense for training, resource, and employee time allocation; but numerous case studies suggest the end result is increase productivity. Increased productivity can apply effectively to both service and manufacturing businesses.

What is six sigma? 1. A focus on the customer 2. Fact based management style 3. Process focus and improvement 4. Proactive management 5. Boundaryless Collaboration 6. The drive for perfection but tolerance of failure 7. 3.4 defects per million opportunities performance standard.

What is the improvement Cycle? DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, and control) 1. Identify the problem and define requirements 2. Redefine the problem and measure key steps 3. Analyze the root causes of the problem 4. Develop improvement ideas to remove root causes and create standards of performance measurement. 5. Establish control measures to maintain performance and correct problems as needed.

How does a company determine whether six sigma is right for them? The authors expand that six sigma is a company cultural change. Case studies indicate the change can be profitable but requires tremendous commitment, resources, and time to implement effectively. The authors assess readiness with three questions: 1. Is change a critical business need now 2. Can the company come up with a strong rationale for applying six sigma to their business 3. Will the existing improving systems be capable of achieving the change needed. A deeper understanding of what six sigma can do for the organization is requested. Scope analysis answers the question of what is feasible in terms of resources, attention, and acceptance. A timeframe analysis answers the question of how long will management be willing to wait for results.

Where to go from here. 1. Develop a strong rationale supporting six sigma methodology in your organization 2. Management plans and actively participates in implementation 3. Create a vision and market plan 4. Become a power advocate of the process improvement cycle 5. Set clear objectives 6. Hold yourself and others accountable 7. Demand solid measurements of progress and results 8. Communicate results and setbacks to the organization. 9. Organize roles (black belts, green belts, and master black belts) 10. Select the project with the biggest impact on the organization.

In short, The six sigma way is a big improvement over Total Quality Managment. It signifies a much higher standard of quality and connects management closer to the improvement effort. A ranking structure of black belts and master black belts brings the best expertise to facilitate improvement in the project. Accountablity and communication increase learning, cooperation, and leverage creativity and focus, in the problem solving stages. Because management is actively participating training, resources, and individual talent is effectively configured. The focus on the customer helps identify how to bring value and increase competitiveness.

Six Sigma is a data-driven management system with near-perfect-performance objectives that has been employed to acclaim at leading corporations like General Electric. Its name is derived from the eye-catching statistical target of operating with no more than 3.4 defects per one million chances, but Peter Pande, Robert Neuman, and Roland Cavanagh--associates in a firm providing Six Sigma implementation, training, and management services--contend its principles can be applied in businesses of all types to routinely reduce costs, improve productivity, increase market share, and achieve other positive results. The Six Sigma Way is their comprehensive self-help guide to adapting and using the system under various conditions. Its first two parts cover fundamentals and provide specific suggestions for aligning the process with individual needs and goals. (These include sections on balancing potential costs and benefits, clarifying objectives, and defining time frames.) The final part, which accounts for more than half the book, focuses on implementation through a detailed yet flexible five-step "road map" tied to a company's core processes, key customers, current performance, "high-potential improvement opportunities," and future practices. While the procedure is quite complex, diligent managers should be able to bring at least basic components to their organization with the tools and techniques provided. --Howard Rothman

GE CEO Jack Welch, has been preaching about and implementing the Six Sigma philosophy throughout GE, and credits the program with millions of dollars in annual cost savings and product quality improvements.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Horridly boring........2007-09-13

More power to you if you can get something worthwile from this book. I bought the book on CD, and it was easily the most forgettable experience I've had in a while. The information is presented from a 30,000 mile view. So "big picture" oriented that it's useless to try and consider the action behind the concepts presented.

If you're looking for a way to appear to have read something complicated and high level about Six Sigma. you found your source. If you want real, usable information, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-09-07

No Joke. A serious six-sigma book written in most elegant form. I like the part where the Authors provide insights into "Sir Pork" - a really good way to put serious stuffs into readable form. Ignore the stars. It could have been 6 :).

4 out of 5 stars A Six Sigma Primer.......2007-02-25

If you're looking to learn about Six Sigma, this is the book to start with. It provides a good overview and quickly dispels the common myths (e.g. Six sigma is for manufacturing companies alone). It helps the reader to determine if Six Sigma is right for his/her organization, and provides clear steps demonstrating how to implement the six sigma roadmaps. It doesn't get too heavy into the advanced statistics, although there is a chapter that explains some of the tools and how they are used. Bottom line: While the reader may still need some assistance (from a trained Black Belt), this book provides the tools necessary to complete a six sigma project. I've read a few books on the topic and this was the most comprehensive - the best of the lot.

5 out of 5 stars Six Sigma Overview - Full of Excellent Case Studies.......2006-11-22

While studying to become a Black Belt in Six Sigma, I found this book to be the most excellent overview of the history and benefits of Six Sigma. I did extensive research into useful books - and found this one to be the most effective.

Many other Six Sigma books try too hard to teach the material - and this book presents the basics, with strong business case studies of success.

If you are involved in the study or use of Six Sigma - I believe this is an essential book in your library.

3 out of 5 stars Good overview but little substance.......2006-11-04

This audio book was more of a cheerleader for six sigma than a book to gain knowledge. It would be a good source of information if you have never heard of six sigma, but otherwise it is not very useful. The reader also has an annoying voice.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for statistical analysts building predictive models for database marketing.......2006-01-05

This is a must have introductory book for the practitioner using data mining to build predictive models in industry. While it does have a few snippets of SAS code, it is a conceptual book that explains the "why" and the "how" of practical model building. (If you want SAS code buy "The Data Mining Cookbook" by Olivia Parr Rud.) It dispenses of with the antiquated notion of the "true" model of classical statistics and econometrics, and shows how to arrive at an acceptable model that yeilds good predictions. As practitioner's, this is what we care about most. Among other things, it gives good explanations of: (1) the EDA paradigm versus classical statistics (2) Tukey's bulging rule for transforming variables (3) variable selection, though there is no mention of clustering to eliminate redundant variables. It discusses some of the weaknesses of automatic variable selection methods (4) smoothed scatterplots and logit plots (5) decile analysis and using bootstrapping to derive confidence intervals for cum lift.

The book shows you how to use logistic regression, OLS, and CHAID to build predictive models. For those interested in Genetic modeling, it has a clearly written chapter on the subject that explains how genetic modeling can be used to create new variables that can have more information than either of the original variables.

While this book does not cover everything, and is definitely not the last word on the subject, it is a solid first word. In particular, the book does not cover splines, shrinkage techniques such as model averaging, ridge regression, ..etc. For treatments of these and similar advanced topics see Frank Harrell's "Regression Modeling Strategies" and Hastie, Tibsharani and Friedman's "Elements of Statistical Learning".

5 out of 5 stars Data Mining for Database marketing.......2003-06-10

I predict that Dr. Ratner's Statistical Modeling and Analysis for Database Marketers: Effective Techniques for Mining Big Data will be on every database marketer's bookshelf. Dr Ratner has put together an assembly of chapters that provide an indispensable resource for the daily problems facing data analysts and model builders in the database/direct marketing community. In each of the seveenteen chatpers Dr. Ratner addresses a typical problem and discusses the common solution. He points out unknown working assumptions or weaknesses of the latter, and then offers better solutions, which require basic knowledge of EDA/data mining. Dr. Ratner's writing style is unique as he makes familar concepts new, and new concepts familar. Thus, the book is easy and enjoyable reading. I specially like chapter that blends statistics with the machine learning, such as the introduction of the GenIQ Model.

5 out of 5 stars "EDA III" for Database Marketing.......2003-06-10

I consider myself fortunate to be the first to review this book. The title aptly indicates what the book is about: Statistical Modeling and Analysis for Database Marketers: Effective Techniques for Mining Big Data. The author provides in a Tukey-esque manner a collection of solutions to common problems facing database analysts, model builders, and marketers. The book can uniquely serve as a textbook, a how-to guide, and a reference source depending on the reader's statistical training and database marketing experience. Moreover, the author actually goes where other authors provide lip service: he creates the marriage of the "old" statistical methodologies with the new machine learning influence by introducing machine learning methods specifically tailored to database assessment of optimal model performance. The book's illustrations involve real problems, real data, and better solutions. This book is a keeper!

Book Description

The primary objective of this new book is to provide a comprehensive reference for those who work in a service industry setting. Unlike Design for Six Sigma a Roadmap for Product Development, this new book will address the 5 leading issues in the service industry, which are customer satisfaction, cost reduction, value improvement, change management and process performance measurements.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for any service large or small.......2006-03-08

This is a great book which tackles most of the difficult issues confronting service organizations (as opposed to manufacturing) as they strive for excellence.

As a key player in the field of Process Management I am keenly aware of the cause of failure for most service businesses. The primary defect in in many service businesses is that they often lack Customer Focus.

This book brings the issue of customer focus onto center stage by discussing the concepts of value as the core basis for successful brand development. In addition to very good philosophical discussions the book also provides several useful tools such as TRIZ and Service Process Management that are essential for DFSS deployment in a service environment. The book also has good examples that illustrate application of the tools. It would be great if several complete case studies can be provided in a future edition.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-02-03

very good book and well written however it has only theory and not calculations of using six sigma to improve.

Good for those new to six sigma who want to find out how six sigma can help their organisations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2005-07-03

As a former business manager and a current marketing executive, I've had extensive experience in various sectors of the service industry. What makes customers come back? What puts a brand name that everyone recognizes on a product or service? Starbucks doesn't serve a radically different product from a no-name coffeeshop, but it takes quite a bit of market savvy and good business management for success in the service industry. This book gives the answers for success in three most important aspects of this industry: consistently good quality of products/services, efficient management of the delivery process, and positive customer/provider interactions. It's not the backing of a rich uncle and the hiring of supermodels to film commercials that distinguishes the best from the mediocre, it's correct management and good service methods. Out of all the books I've read on the topic, this is certainly one of the best.

Book Description

Six Sigma is a system for improving the quality of organizational processes and products to a level of 3 defects per million--the "six sigma" level of quality. It was originally developed at Motorola in the 1980's and has become one of the most widely discussed and reported trends in business over the past two years, thanks largely to the phenomenal successes of the Six Sigma program at GE, where CEO Jack Welch credits it with millions of dollars in annual cost savings and product quality improvements. Due to the widespread coverage of the Six Sigma program by the business press over the last two years, there is strong demand for books and information on how Six Sigma works and how to implement it. The Six Sigma Handbook is designed for the manager or quality professional who is already familiar with Six Sigma and wants a guide to the basic quality tools and statistics that are the foundation for Six Sigma. In addition to providing a brief overview of the management and organization of Six Sigma, and the underlying philosophy, the book explains in detail the problem-solving techniques and statistical tools most often used in Six Sigma.

I've had more than a few occasions to use this text. It is excellently
written and provides a great mix of pragmatic and technical topics that
have helped me on several different 6S teams I'm working. Can't say that
I've read it cover to cover, but can say that it is an excellent handbook.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Guide.......2002-05-17

The subtitle to Pyzdek's book is "A Complete Guide Greenbelts, Blackbelts ..." I think that is a bit of an overstatement. The book is a collection of snipets on managerial and technical issues. On the technical side, he covers a few pages here and few pages there on everything from control charts to design of experiments.

My view is that Pyzdek's book is a nice basic overview to six-sigma. Something for greenbelts but hardly the coverage necessary for blackbelts. Blackbelts, by definition, need in depth coverage with excellent software support. By the way, with the exception of a few figures of Excel output, software issues are pretty void in this book. And the use of Excel is questionable considering its accuracy problems (well documented).

For blackbelts, my advice is to pick up a management dedicated six-sigma book. Then for technical side, one is best served to arm themselves with authorative references. For ANOVA and DOE, consider Montgomery's "Design of Experiments" book and also consider Neter and Wasserman's "Applied Linear Models". For statistical process control, there is a gem of a book by Alwan titled "Statistical Process Analysis". Alwan's book covers basic SPC but takes process analysis to the next level by covering issues of nonnormality and time-series/SPC using a lot of Minitab (Pyzdek actually references his work). Armed with this collection of these basic references you will be no doubt have the technical skills of a master black belt or actually beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the Six Sigma Exam.......2002-03-25

If you are taking the ASQ exam, this would be a good choice. I would also recommend a first level statistics text book. I used Weiss Elementary Statistics.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Simplistic Overview.......2006-04-28

I picked the book off a manager's shelf to get an overview and fill some time. It does give an overview if one just accepts, can get past, cheerleading as argument and apparently incorrect statistical presentation. The author says early on that Six Sigma is an extension and refinement of quality programs, but then thereafter claims it's unrelated and totally different than those, as if he is chanting a mantra, without offering any meaningful explanation as to how. Not long after, he explains the basic statistics of calculating error rates, standard deviations, tolerances and such, but then it gets dicey: a key formula is written incorrectly (parenthesis are not used where they should be) and the forumla and text explanation do not correspond. Moreover, his more important calculations are not shown and I wasn't able to reproduce them based on the information provided (does 6-Sigma mean 6 x the standard deviation, as stated, or 6 standard deviations from the mean?). Such simple mindedness and apparent errors are disconcerting and undermine confidence in the rest of the author's presentation.

4 out of 5 stars An effective overview but not more.......2005-11-02

If you know very little to nothing about quality processes, statistics or the audacious goals of a 'Six Sigma' process, then this book is an excellent choice to get an overview. Just as the title says, this book is for MANAGERS and thus takes a broad, managerial view - as opposed to the "nuts-n-bolts" of the worker-bees who will do the work. But, the manager targeted for this book seems more a remote manager not too involved in the daily tasks of a full-out six-sigma initiative. Accordingly, SS guru/author Greg Brue defines broadly "what is six sigma" and highlights the main elements of the process (define/measure/analyze/improve/control) along with the leadership roles and importance of a "top-down" commitment. (ideal to refer to the Table of Contents). He also presents the basic financial arguements of how Six Sigma can pay for itself and improve many key business metrics - albeit in the most simplistic terms and without any mention of up-front investments (nothing is free to start).

Positive points: clear language, nice paper quality, not one of those tiny paperbacks(!), an easy-to-read type-set, not too technical for the beginner, decent graphs, and mostly just a good overview of the many considerations and tools for the Six Sigma process.

But, if you are a person who is more technical, statistical or has been to business school, this book is probably way too simple for other than a short reminder of what is important. You'll quickly read it through and say, "What's next?" The basic teachings here will really not equip you to lead a Six Sigma effort or effectively use its analytical or statistical tools in a meeting setting (not enough detail). Also, there were not enough detailed or compelling examples of how to use the statistical tools or and in-depth analysis of the financial payoffs. The few examples were only about 1-2 paragraphs in length so that should give you an idea of its depth. Again it is not a textbook but a quickie overview of what to consider and why it is important and how it can pay off. But, it should leave you with a firm sense of how Six Sigma is not merely "another quality program" but a company-wide, integrated initiative towards maximizing profitability, productivity and customer satisfaction (to name a few things) through measuring everything of importance from manufacturing processes to accounts receivable. And towards that goal, I found it useful to start the journey. Next stop ... a fat textbook with lots of graphs, charts, equations and highly-detailed business examples.

If you did not know, "Six Sigma" refers to the statistical level of quality as measured by a defect rate (non-comformance to some spec) of only 3.4 per 1,000,000 occurances (or 99.9997% in-spec). Prior to the 80's this audacious goal was really unheard of until the age of precision electronics manufacturing and one alert Motorola engineer who first defined the goal and started this train rolling.

4 out of 5 stars the first six sigma book I provide to my clients.......2005-10-10

This is a perfect entry level book for mid/top managers willing to know the basic about Six Sigma. Very easy to read and understand.

3 out of 5 stars It's not bad.......2005-05-19

I already knew what six sigma was and I already had a basic grasp of statistical concepts. I got what I expected from the book, a high level overview of six sigma.

This book is about 160 pages long, I think the author could have easily trimmed some fat and fluff and condensed it to less then 100 pages.

Overall, I'm glad I bought the book, it's inexpensive and I feel I've gotten my money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction for those who are confused about Six Sigma.......2004-08-22

I wanted to know about Six Sigma. I read some articals, but did not get a good picture of Six Sigma. This book is quite readable, interesting and provides a good introduction to Six Sigma. I recommend it to any one as the first book towards Six Sigma initiative.

Book Description

Focusing on the analysis of data using modern statistical and spreadsheet software, Hildebrand and Ott emphasize making sense of data and discuss not only how a statistical method is applied, but why and why not. Throughout the book, the authors integrate computer use into the development of statistical concepts, emphasizing the value of looking at data to make sure the right questions are being asked. The real-life applications and examples throughout challenge students to think like managers. The case that concludes every chapter asks students to deal with a relatively unstructured situation and to explain the statistical reasoning in nontechnical language. Modern statistical methods, including resampling and bootstrapping are included. In addition, the authors emphasize quality control and improvement throughout the book and include three full chapters on regression and correlation methods.

1 out of 5 stars The worst one among intro statistics books........2004-07-11

My MBA class (top 20 program)used this book. But even my instructor did not recommend us to read this book. Instead he just taught class with his own hand-out. We only used this book for exercise problems. There were students who had many years of research experience. But they even complained about this book and recommended me to read Anderson's " Statistics for Business and Economics". Anyway, I think if you have a good instructor it is O.K. Otherwise I am sure that it will be very painful. Gook luck.

1 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-01-29

You better hope you have a good teacher. Don't use it as a last resort to study, if you can even find where a certain topic starts, its nearly impossible to follow.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Book on the Planet.......2003-04-11

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
This by far the worst book I have come accross in my life.
I am a mechanical engineer taking statistics for my MBA. Fortunately I have a very good intstructor so I dont even use the book.
Its worthless. Seems like the author is talking to himself.

1 out of 5 stars The worse book about statistics.......2003-02-01

Do NOT buy this book. I am sure the author understands a lot about statistics but he definitely does not know how to organize its ideas. The book makes the subject appear much more complex than it really is. If you need to learn statistics are not a Statistics PhD student then what I really recommend you to do is to get another book. For MBA students: This book is way more complex than you will need to know for your studies.

1 out of 5 stars A muddled mess.......2002-06-19

It's hard to believe that a Wharton professor produced this book but I guess it's just proof that no school is perfect. I'm sure the authors understand statistical analysis but they have no clue how to organize the material or communicate what they know effectively. Honestly, even if you have learned the concepts for a chapter through another source this book can be hard to follow.

Want an example of the murky text? Try this typical run-on sentence quoted directly from the book. "In the same way, the normal random variable is an abstraction, because in theory any numerical value, negative as well as positive, is possible, and the probability histogram is a smooth, symmetric, bell-shaped curve." Try stringing together 800 pages of similar prose and you have an idea what awaits you here.

I watched an entire class including the professor disown this book because it was useless. Do yourself a favor and avoid this turkey if at all possible.
