Did this book even have an editor?.......2006-10-21
There may be useful information in this text, but it's hard to trust anything that's so poorly written.
Page 32: ". . . the answer to each question is provided by one of financial statements."
Page 42: "Investment activities include such as purchasing, financing . . ."
I noticed an average of one error per page, although this seemed to get better as I read past the third chapter. (Maybe I just lost the ability to tell!) Now, I haven't noticed any substantive errors, but it's quite possible that one of the frequent mistakes in language caused the meaning of a sentence to change. In addition, the errors are just distracting! Imagine reading along, and not being able to get through a single page without doing a double-take because a sentence doesn't scan. And I'm not even trying to proof-read, just trying to understand the text!
All that being said, this seems to be a thorough treatment of the subject, and I guess I can infer that my professor thinks the content is reliable. But this text reads like a product manual that's been poorly translated from another language!
Very Good........2003-06-23
This is an excellent text for an engineering economics class. It concisely explains and demonstrates basic ideas and financial concepts in a logical manner. The only draw back I could detect was the author's nomemclature, which he introduces at the first of the text. If you don't memorize it early on, it becomes difficult to understand quickly. The professor who taught the Engineering Economics class I took was none other than Chan Park himself (guess what the required text was!).

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Essential to anyone involved in the planning, design, construction, operation or finance of infrastructure assets, this innovative work puts project delivery, finance, and operation together in a practical new formulation of how both public and private owners can better manage their entire collection of infrastructure facilities.
Principles of Public and Private Infrastructure Delivery traces the history of infrastructure development and finance in the United States, and meticulously ties America's historical success in infrastructure to the simultaneous use of Design-Bid- Build, Design-Build, Design-Build-Operate, and Design-Build-Finance-Operate to deliver both public and private infrastructure collections. This historical background provides the basis for a new, integrated strategy for managing infrastructure assets in the 21st century.
Principles of Public and Private Infrastructure Delivery provides the logic and practical tools that public and private decision-makers need to make better strategic choices in the application of scarce resources to infrastructure facilities. New tools are presented that permit simple comparisons of different project delivery and finance strategies. Practical approaches are provided that allow owners to quickly compare capital program alternatives for entire collections of infrastructure facilities. Practical legislative strategies for organizing the delivery of public infrastructure are presented and described.
Principles of Public and Private Infrastructure Delivery provides a practical framework that owners can apply to implement a competitive infrastructure strategy and a principled framework that private sector firms can use to effectively reposition themselves in this changing market. It puts infrastructure asset management in an entirely new and more productive light, and establishes a new paradigm for steady improvement in the quality and cost performance of public and private infrastructure networks.
Audience: This book will be an essential reference tool for infrastructure managers throughout the public and private sectors, including:

Book Description
During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Middle East and North Africa were perceived as being exceptionally successful, but now the region is viewed as a resounding economic and social failure. Islam is not only a religion, but also a political and social project. A major pretext of this work is to demonstrate how the tensions within Islamic movements feed directly into the economic, social, political, historical and religious arena of the region, and vice versa. An introductory chapter sets the context of the book. The core chapters of the book comprise an in-depth examination of the varied forms of oil revenue abuse. For examples, the past mismanagement of the tremendous wealth provided by oil. Following Islamic beliefs, revenue from oil should not finance wasteful consumption, but used instead for public welfare. Abstaining from interest calculations, there should be a case for keeping more oil in the ground. Indeed, oil has also stifled industrial development, and with declining oil revenues, the conflict between civilian and military priorities intensifies. While western interests have promoted arms spending, high population-growth expenditure reinforces the reality of the count-down to the post-oil era upon the Middle Eastern and North African oil exporters. So far the governments seem unwilling or unable to adapt and react. Furthermore, in the past oil has been used as a substitute for democracy. While the large oil revenues of the 1970s and early 1980s strengthened the position of autocratic rulers and weakened the private sector, repressive regimes have made Islam a source of criticism and opposition for the Western world. Following on from this, the book then looks forward to the problem of uniting the divergent interests in the spheres of oil and Islam into a cohesive whole. The book proposes that ideally Islamic governments would synchronise the depletion of oil reserves with investment in new productive assets. Islamic governments could also find ways to combine private, domestic and foreign interests in the oil industry. The main readership for this book will be policy-makers and professionals involved in development issues for Middle Eastern and North African affairs, and those with an interest in oil politics and Islamic studies.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Research without any biases.......2004-04-03
Professor Noreng has done a great service to both Muslims and Non Muslims by writing this book. It offers great insights into Islam, muslim history, business and culture. The common thread linking all these diverse topics is oil wealth.
Professor Noreng presents the facts as they are, and offers detailed refernces to back them up. He does not engage in any finger pointing, blame game, and things of that nature. His book follows the phiolosphy of these are the facts, thess are my interpretations and judgements, but feel free to make your own judgement.
I am a born muslim. Even I learned a lot about Islam after reading this book. The Economics of Oil is dealt superbly. Remarkable book.
Good background on current affairs.......2004-02-09
Has obvious relevance after September 2001, and with US forces now in Iraq and Afghanistan. The author shows how oil has been a very mixed blessing in Muslim countries. While producing great wealth, this has sometimes been unevenly distributed through the originating countries. And in cases like Saudi Arabia and Brunei, it was used to put off democracy by providing material benefits, that at least arguably were received by most of the population.
As an aside, it was through the industrialisation of Saudi Arabia, and many government contracts for this, that Osama bin Laden amassed much of his wealth, which then bankrolled his later activities. Though the book, written in 1997, of course does not mention him, as he was an obscure figure then.
The author also discusses Iraq, with almost half the world's proven resources. Here, the oil managed to pay for twenty years of war and internal repression. The consequences of which are still unfolding daily.
A good background primer on current political affairs.

Book Description
Summary: In the last 30 years, the world's software industry has been developing rapidly and the landscape has also been changing dramatically. It is no longer predominately controlled by the developed countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. This book examines the competitive and strategic issues faced by China and India through a political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal analysis. The book also examines their competitive strengths and weaknesses and the potential risks for organisations looking to expand or invest resources in these two countries. The book also looks at the market strategies of both countries in a global context and identifies the critical success factors that have enabled China and India to gain competitive advantage in their respective markets. Importantly, the book examines the threats that these two countries pose to other countries looking to expand their presence in the global software markets. This book helps practitioners and business managers who are responsible for a firm's strategy or investment resources to grasp and understand the complexities and challenges faced by those organisations looking to expand their operations in these countries. Key Features: 1. Is written by highly knowledgeable and well-respected international practitioners in the field 2. Draws on the authors' wide-ranging practical experience of working with some of the worlds leading global service providers on major strategy development and service provision 3. Provides practical guidance to real-world problems in the global software industry The Authors: John McManus PhD is based at the University of Lincoln (UK). Mingzhi Li is an Associate Professor of Economics at the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, P.R. China. Deependra Moitra is a senior corporate executive at one of India's leading global IT consulting and services companies. Readership: The book is aimed at senior executives and managers working in the software industry with interests in China and India. The book will also appeal to academics and those responsible for investment and strategic decision making in international organisations. Good analysis framework.......2007-05-04
Indian firms like Infosys and Wipro have already reshaped the IT Services industry. Now China is focusing on building up its software industry. What are the implications of this for the global software industry? This is a question that dogged many observers. Until now I haven't seen a thoughtful analysis about this. Yes, there have been a number of opinions expressed based on anecdotal data and armchair speculation. But there is nothing like the quality of analysis this book offers.
It first looks at China and India separately using PESTEL analysis. It then compares the two of them together using a SWOT perspective. This sets the stage for a good discussion about their influence in the global software industry. Since China and India aren't acting independently the authors do a fairly perceptive examination of the interrelationships between the strategies of the two countries. They also look at likely competitive strategy and positioning that China and India are likely to follow in the years to come.
There are some interesting conclusions. India and China will compete only at the edges; both will gain market share in the global software industry. Also, India IT Services domination will not be seriously threatened by China. This is because the Indian IT Services firms have attained critical mass and scale in contrast to the Chinese firms. The Chinese industry is remains fragmented and is unlikely to see significant consolidation in the near future. And unless consolidation happens, as fast follower strategy is unlikely to work. The area that Chinese firms might shine is not IT Services but products. They have the advantage of a larger local market and better government support over the Indian firms.
I think the issue of India and China will have to be revisited a few years from now. The strength of this book is that it provides an analysis framework that can be reused.
The pricing at $110 is a bit bizarre. This price point effectively ensures a small readership which is quite a shame considering that topic is so relevant to a large part of the software industry.
Book Description
Can we abolish global poverty? Should we do away with foreign aid? Is the United Nations redundant? Why should I bother? Can I help? Mike Edwards offers timely answers to issues that have been propelled to center stage.
Future Positive offers a comprehensive and authorative rethink of an international system facing a period of unprecedented change. In a world of global markets, eroding state sovereignty, expanding citizen action and uncertainty about fundamental truths, what is the best was to tackle problems of global poverty and voilence?
Michael Edwards charts a "new path" between heavy-handed intervention and complete laissez-faire. Covering an enormous amount of ground in clear, lively and non-technical terms, Future Positive explains how the international system operates, the pressures it faces, and the changes it must undergo, and offers concrete new ideas to re-frame international relations and foreign aid.

exactly what we need after Sepember 11th.......2002-01-08
... Make no mistake, this is a rigorous treatment of the international cooperation debate, packed with detailed evidence that is all footnoted at the end. At times this makes for some heavy reading, but it is worth it, since the evidence and the argument all hang together to illumine what has gone wrong in the world since 1945 and what we can do about it. Yes, this does mean "re-balancing the competitive and co-operative rationalities that motivate each one of us" (from the Preface), but in the aftermath of September 11th you would have to be crazy not to understand the importance of global cooperation in addressing threats like terrorism, pollution and poverty. What Edwards shows, better to my mind than any other recent book I've read, is how the original ideals of "international community" after World War II were corrupted into a system of threats and bribes that can never be effective in eliciting real cooperation between countries. Some of his prescriptions for correcting this situation may sound idealistic, but better this than the emptiness and cynicism of much current political debate. Especially since September 11th, I do believe that the world is heading in the direction of a "Future Positive", and this book is a pretty good roadmap to help us along the way.
Paving the road to (economic) Hell.......2001-12-29
If good intentions were all that is required for an author, Michael Edwards would be a giant among policy writers. Unfortunately, having one's heart in the right place is not enough. Consider this passage on page 144:
"Does basketball player Michael Jordan have to earn 31,000 times more for advertising Nike sports shoes than the workers who produce them, despite the fact that should wages be doubled the cost of production would still fall below $1 a pair?... Inequalities [such as this] result from political decisions
about the distribution of gains arising from economic activity."
This statement betrays a profound ignorance of how markets work. Michael Jordan earns 31,000 times more than the factory workers, not as a result of any "political decision," but because there are apparently many people for whom $1.75 a day is preferable to unemployment or life in a poor rural village. On the other hand, there is only one Michael Jordan and Nike believes only an athlete of his caliber should represent its product. If Nike had to settle for a lesser player as spokesperson and sold fewer shoes as a result, at least some of the workers in the shoe factory would lose their jobs. So while it may seem frivolous or even outrageous that someone who throws a ball through a hoop earns thousands of times more than people who provide a basic necessity like shoes, the shoemakers themselves and those who care about their wellbeing should be happy Nike can afford to hire Michael Jordan.
This preachy litany of cliches, half-truths, and unsubstantiated assertions about evils of competition and laissez-faire is nothing more than warmed-over Fabian socialism. It didn't work in the 19th century. It won't work in the 21st either.

Inspiring, practical, instructive for mind heart and soul..........2000-11-18
After over a decade of dealing with international co-operation in various capacities, in different locations and on many sides of the equation, this is the first time that I find a book that actually translates my experiences in a way that helps me deeply understand the reasons behind my successes and failures.
Would like to highly recomend this book to anyone who has lost faith in international co-operation, or who is looking for a compass to guide them through the complexities of such an art.
Insightful, inspiring, informed, committed, refreshing and very useful are some of the adjectives that come to me as I write this.
Happy reading
Future Positive: A reason for Amazon to add a sixth star!.......2000-07-22
Future Positive: A reason for Amazon to add a sixth star!
Future Positive does an outstanding job of summarizing the state of international development today, what brought us to this point, and a concrete roadmap for positive change in the future.
The author, Michael Edwards, hits the nail on the head again and again with insightful analysis of past events and creative, yet firmly rooted, stategies for the future.
I urge anyone that is interesting in the future of our world to read this book. It is what I call "International Development 101" for those seeking to understand the field. For those working in the field of International Development this is a must read.
I have made it required reading at our organization for all staff members and for every volunteer that goes to the field with our program.
