    Book Description

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.

    2 out of 5 stars Overpriced .......2007-09-18

There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.

    5 out of 5 stars Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27

In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17

The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10

I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!

4 out of 5 stars Not to bad.......2005-09-13

The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.

Great Dictionary with all the financial/investment terms and abreviations.
The book has become my table-book.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference material.......2007-09-10

This is the best reference for the securities industry. I am new to the industry but in a high level position. This is the book that our Complance officer is using to bring me up to speed on terminology and concepts. Better than a textbook. Just remember that it is basically a dictionary -NOT a textbook - so if you need a textbook I would suggest getting this as a supplement to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference tool for your desk.......2007-07-13

I've been in banking for over 12 years and I still run into words and phrases that are sometimes unfamiliar to me. This book has been a handy tool on my desk--colleagues have come by to use it. If you work in banking or finance, or are a student majoring in similar fields, I would suggest that you make this essential to your portfolio of tools that you use.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, small, light...........2007-05-13

It helped me on several occasions. There are, however, terms that are not defined, so I need to refer to the internet for those. Overall, a good deal....

4 out of 5 stars COVERED GENERAL BUSINESS; NOT JUST FINANCE AND INVESTMENT.......2005-11-10

Despite being called "Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms", this dictionary not only covered finance and investing, by cut across every aspect of general business. Its extensive coverage of management, accounting, marketing, advertising, and real estate makes it really unnecessary for anyone who already owns it to be bothering about acquiring any other business dictionary. Also, its encroaching expansion into computer and internet terms is both commendable and valuable.
All of its terms have been revised and simplified, using everyday language. And, a rare combination of quality and low price ensures that the demand for this dictionary will continue to dominate those of its rivals. Its 736 pages, which hold more than 5000 definitions remained astonishingly compact, authoritative, refined, and very concise. It is indeed a true hard-to-beat choice!

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

With its 3,223 pages of prescription drugs, the updated Physicians' Desk Reference is the most comprehensive, widely used drug reference available. It is a requisite for hospitals, libraries, doctors, and medical students, and a boon to medical buffs and amateurs. There's a "Manufacturers' Index," a "Brand and Generic Name Index," a "Product Category Index," and the priceless "Product Identification Guide" (30 glossy pages filled with thousands of color pictures). There are also lists of drug information centers and poison control centers, but the heart of the book is the "Product Information" section, which details the pharmacology, usage, warnings, and precautions for more than 2,200 pharmaceuticals. The result is a weighty, irreplaceable medical reference.

    Book Description

Completely revised and updated, the 2002 PDR provides FDA-approved drug information on more than 4,000 prescription drugs (brand and generic names), over 2,000 full-color, actual-size photos of medicines for instant identification, and important data on over 250 drug manufacturers. New medicines, new drug interaction data, the most recent side effects findings, and certain drugs now removed from the market make it absolutely critical that medical and healthcare professionals keep up-to-date with the very latest prescription drug information. The 2002 PDR contains: the newest drugs-which drugs are indicated for the diagnosed condition; how different drugs interact; latest findings on side effects caused by the prescribed drug; recommended dosages; clinical pharmacology; pediatric use; contraindications; FDA use-in-pregnancy ratings; and more. Among the new drugs featured in this edition are: Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium), a new proton pump inhibitor approved for the treatment of GERD and H. pylori eradication; Canasa (mesalamine), a new anti-inflammatory rectal suppository indicated for the treatment of active ulcerative proctitis; Lumigan (bimatoprost), a new ophthalmic solution approved for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure associated with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension; Advair (fluticasone propionate/salmeterol xinafoate), a new combination inhalation powder approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma; Trizivir (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine/zidovudine), a new combination nucleoside analogue approved for the treatment of HIV-1 infection; Cancidas (caspofungin acetate), the first of a new class of antifungal agents called glucan synthesis inhibitors, is indicated for refractory treatment of invasive aspergillosis; Remeron SolTab (mirtazapine), a new orally disintegrating tablet for the treatment of depression; Lunelle Monthly (medroxyprogesterone acetate/estradiol cypionate), a new long acting contraceptive injection; Gleevec (imatinib mesylate), a new oral protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML); and Valcyte (valganciclovir HCl), the new antiviral prodrug of ganciclovir, is indicated for CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS. New larger trim size allows dramatically improved readability. 3,000+ pages.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Should Own One.......2003-01-06

Everybody shold own a copy of this reference book. I have had doctors write out a perscription for me that would be lethal or at best land me into the hospital because they are not up on pharmacology. They practice medical care whch often is one dimensional for a condition without taking into the other medications the patients are taking and are in too much of a hurry to monitor medications. I have had pharmacists fill perscriptions ,thinking their computers would red flag medications that should not be mixed, but the pharmacist cannot keep up with all of the medications, and their computers are not programmed to "red flag". I have had to ask for print outs and the doctors resent being called on if meds they ordered were dangerous with other medical conditions. So patients need to cross-reference the medications themselves. This book needs to be kept up to date and at a place of easy accessibility at home for every patient.Mistakes are made too easily and no one wants to take responsibility for the mistakes of pharmacists or physicians. Patients need to become knowledgeabe of every dangerous interaction with conditions they have, or other medications they are taking. The book is very large and bulky, but it has a tremendous amount of information contained in it. There is a section of generic name, as well as brand names. New medications come out every year and a patient needs to know more than the small print out the pharmacy supplies. It is easy for a doctor to use a laptop computer, list medical conditions and information, including medications a patient is on and cross reference. I have seen an excellent doctor do this to keep a patient well. Unfortunately, not many doctors either can be bothered or know how to do this, so patients have needed to monitor their medications and become knowledgeable or they take high risks leaving their trust in a person who has an MD after their name. They take for granted the title has endowments of high credibility. The PDR is essential for a patient to keep themselves out of harms way. Just as in any field some doctors are very good and some more interested in their day off at the golf course. As time goes on, patients have needed to seriosly question the quality of their doctor and the medications that he is perscribing. The patient needs a reference book to read all of the information of the medications, that their doctor has not paid attention to for good medicine. I prefer a doctor that earned a good reputation, not one that is "practicing" on me with medications he is not familar with that a pharmacudical reprsentative gave him samples of, so he orders whatever a salesman told him to order. Get this PDR and think things through before blindly trusting a doctor that has not even considered all of the interactions that could possibly prove fatal. Doctors who are "too busy" to bother are dangerous. Mrs Symmington

    3 out of 5 stars Psychopharm's "Bible".......2002-10-21

The PDR, published annually and continually updated, is *the* desk reference for any doctor who prescribes prescription medications. It contains detailed information on dosage, contraindictions, med interactions, all the things that the manufacturer's reps aren't likely to mention when selling your doctor on a featured drug.
Individuals who take several meds for comorbid chronic conditions will welcome information besides the little orange "May cause drowsiness" stickers on the med bottles, and with the available update service will keep and use the PDR for years to come.
Am I the only person who removes those stickers and places them on boring things at work?
    Yours in healing...

3 out of 5 stars Remember this information is provided by the manufacturers.......2002-05-26

Although this information is very useful, it is manufacturers' self-reported data. It doe not necessarily post studies that are actually done on target populations - children for Ritalin for example. So you cannot rely upon the information as if it were done by objective third parties.

Nonetheless it is very useful to have. It is a shame that we don't have much objective information on drugs, particularly after so many recalls and recent problems with shaded data.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with information.......2002-01-27

This book is a invaluable reference. Buy it, and use it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Wealth Of Information.......2000-12-15

I like the Physician's Desk Reference because it contains a wealth of information. It's perfect for looking up drug interactions, uses, dosing and adverse effects among other things. This is a great reference tool.

    2 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2007-06-16

Probably the most common reason to purchase this book is to gain information about becoming an independent medical transcriptionist, but I really was disappointed with this book as far as that is concerned. Technology and medicine both advance and change on a daily basis which leaves this book, printed in 2002, in somewhat of a dark age, especially now that the most cost effective, time efficient, and popular way of transferring all sorts of data is electronically.

While there is some good information in this book, I don't think the amount of information that is relevant is worth the price. Most of this stuff can be found on the internet more accurately than in the pages of this book.

    3 out of 5 stars Quite Dated.......2005-11-27

Despite being revised in 2002, much of the information in this book is still quite dated. For example, it still assumes WordPerfect is the standard for word processing software, and it talks about upgrading your computer to a 486!! Not sure what they did in that 2002 revision... Given how behind the times the book is, it is of limited usefulness. However, there are some good sections and it is a reasonable general overview of setting up your own independent transcription service.

5 out of 5 stars For all People in Medical Transcription........2003-09-02

I read this bokk, this to to let all you people related to Medical Transcription that this book is great. Has useful material for Medical Transcriptionists. Book gose into details on setting up and becoming a good Medical Transcriptionist. This book is being kept in our library and we will ask all our Trsnscriptionist to read it and but it, as it has useful tips. ...

    2 out of 5 stars It's informative but...........2002-11-03

This book can be informative at times but most of the time, I felt like I was reading the book version of the home shopping channel. If you're already a transcriptionist, you don't need this book. And if you're a newbie, The Medical Transcription Career Handbook has more and better eye-openers to help you get started.

5 out of 5 stars How to build a home-based medical transcription business.......2002-06-06

    5 out of 5 stars Exellent resource.......2007-01-09

I use this in a training class about bank documentation. It is very helpful and comprehensive. It defines terms in concise and easy to understand words. Even a seasoned banker can learn something from this dictionary.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2002-09-26

Working in an IT company catering to bankers I bought this book to help understand their lingo. I have to say it hasn't disappointed yet. It is also very up to date the latest IT/banking terms. If you were to read all the definitions in this book you would probably know more than you banker. A great reference. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Let the Title Fool You.......2001-08-05

This can almost be considered an inexpensive textbook. It not only defines, but explains the terms in a simple, easy to understand format. Although in dictionary form, it consistently relates the terms to one another so the reader will understand how the concepts interwind. Includes financial and banking terms.

    5 out of 5 stars bookisexcellent.......1999-05-25

book should contain all banking terms because most of them are not understood by layman

5 out of 5 stars Clear and Comprehensive.......1999-01-29

Whether you are a novice seeking to learn the fundamentals of banking, or an active professional who has just encountered an unusual term, you will want this book. Each definition is short (only a paragraph or so), but most contain links to other terms, so the reader can gain a progressively deeper understanding of how terms interrelate. I also like the frequent inclusion of dates (e.g., the year a particular law was passed). The definitions are authoritative--based on a number of leading accounting, banking, and financial entities identified in the introduction. It's worth far more than its bargain price. I look forward to the next edition (Year 2000?). Keep up the good work!

2 out of 5 stars Difficult book to use.......2005-12-01

This book and its predecessor are difficult to use. While the information may be good, this book requires a lot of flipping back and forth between pages. The CDs are really, really bad. The persons posing as doctors are poor readers. It's obvious they're reading scripts from the sound of turning pages heard. These persons affect poor accents...one female tried to sound Scottish and kept saying "fart" for "for". One male, who reads as if, at best, he has an 8th grade education with a 5th grade reading level (he doesn't understand commas and periods), is really bad to listen to when he tries to sound Hispanic. Loud crunching sounds and cocaine sniffs by one male and the above-mentioned female sound like delinquent hogs at slop. The very worst thing about the CD and text, however, is in the fact that terminology is not only not found in the text, it isn't found in Taber's, Mosby's, or Stedman's dictionaries, nor in the Merck Manual. I wouldn't recommend purchase unless, like me, you are required to purchase these for a class. I know doctors can be extremely aggravating, but no more so than the "doctors" on the CD and this text!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book .......2004-11-29

The 2004 Delmar Thomson catalog states that an audio CD is in the back of this book. In order to get this audio CD of dictations, call Delmar at 1-800-998-7498, extension 2687

Page 115 of this catalog says that an audio CD of helpful exercises is in the back of the book.

Great book for advanced training. Get the tapes for sure!

    1 out of 5 stars Forrest General Medical Center:Medical Term.& Transcription.......2000-04-26

This is a reference book only. You have to call the publisher to order the dictation. Without the dictation a medical transcription 'course' is rather useless.
