Menopause is a complicated business. Medical issues vary widely and treatment options seem endless--especially in the wake of bad news about hormone replacement. While The Sexy Years isn't meant to supply you with a specific program of daily supplements, Suzanne Somers does offer an excellent inspiration to march forth and take control of this stage of health. Much of the book covers her own experience of menopause, including some detail on her breast cancer ordeal. She advocates the use of natural, bioidentical hormonal replacement, available through a variety of creams and supplements--it's a rare page that doesn't gush about the power of these substances or raise negative issues about the use of synthetic hormones. Introductory medical information is included on how estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone work together to keep people healthy and active; the vocabulary is understandable and generally entertaining rather than overwhelming. She provides interviews with a variety of doctors and women in various stages of menopause. These will give women a good place to start with topics to address with their own medical providers. While a short index of doctors and compounding pharmacies is provided, most women will have to do their own research to find local natural hormone specialists. But if you're looking for a boost of courage to bring up these treatments with your doctor--or simply want to investigate more natural alternatives to the standard synthetics--this is a fine place to get started. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Getting older can be brutal—women gain weight, lose their sex drive, experience hot flashes, suffer memory loss, become short-tempered, find it difficult to sleep, and on and on. It’s not so easy for men, either—they start to lose energy and stamina as they age, too (and they have to live with women going through menopause). After years of being thin and fit and full of energy, Suzanne herself encountered the “Seven Dwarfs of Menopause”—Itchy, Bitchy, Sweaty, Sleepy, Bloated, Forgetful, and All-Dried-Up. Instead of living out the rest of her life cranky, sleep-deprived, and libido-less, Suzanne set out to discover how she could get her mind, body, and life back and banish those pesky dwarfs for good.

The result is The Sexy Years: Discover the Hormone Connection—The Secret to Fabulous Sex, Great Health, and Vitality, for Women and Men. In this passionately argued and enormously practical book, Suzanne supports her own research and experiences with the expertise of leading doctors in the field of women’s and men’s health and sexuality to create an inspiring, accessible call-to-arms to women to radically rethink how they approach life after fifty, and give them the tools to turn their lives around.

Suzanne has discovered that the second half of life has been more rewarding, fun, and purposeful than her younger years. The key to her happiness? Taking natural bioidentical hormones. Natural hormones, which mimic the hormones produced in our own bodies that are almost completely lost with aging, are the answer to the symptoms of menopause that plague women. Recent findings from the medical community show that synthetic hormone replacement therapy
(HRT) may be harmful to women—thus, thousands of women are looking for what else they can do to alleviate their symptoms. In The Sexy Years, Suzanne comes to the rescue with a step-by-step plan and detailed information about how women can take control of their health, for themselves and for their men, including:

• What the differences are between synthetic and bioidentical hormones, and why bioidentical hormones help women lose weight, reinvigorate their sex lives, and fight the symptoms of aging
• How doctors do not receive adequate training about hormones and are slaves to the pharmaceutical industry, and what questions every woman must ask her physician about hormone replacement therapy and her health
• How Suzanne turned her life around, with information about how often she visits her doctor, blood work, what hormones she takes, how to get these hormones, and more
• What male menopause, or andropause, is and how men can also take bioidentical hormones and regain the energy they had in their youth
• What a variety of specialists think about natural hormones, health, and sexuality—Suzanne shares the best advice from these doctors and provides a resource list of physicians and pharmacies

With bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, Suzanne has found the fountain of youth, the elixir that has made her feel thirty years old again. In combination with her Somersize diet and fitness plan, which she also writes about here, Suzanne has never felt better. The beauty of growing older, she maintains, is that you can combine the wisdom of age with the vitality of youth. Suzanne makes it perfectly clear how women and men can regain their zest for life at any age. These really are the sexy years!

5 out of 5 stars Empowering and Informative.......2007-08-04

After visiting doctors about my new (and related) health issues and becoming more confused and scared than ever, this book has helped me understand that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It's a load off my mind just knowing that these issues can be resolved, and that I will be healthy again. But, as said in this book, finding the right doctor (for you) is key. I believe that my mother experienced the very same issues that I am now beginning to experience, only she didn't have resources like this book to help her. She showed the classic signs of estrogen dominance and it sadly affected her quality of life, too. I now understand exactly how dangerous this is for women, and am taking actions to resolve this situation for myself. I am empowered and informed. Thank you, Suzanne.

3 out of 5 stars It changed my life.......2007-05-08

I tried to follow the advice of this book and ended up in the hospital for a week with near fatal blood clots. The blood clots were not hereditary; they were due to an increase in Estrogen according to my blood tests. While I believe that for a number of woman this book is right on track, it does not do nearly a good enough job of warning women about potentially life ending or life threatening side effects. If you follow the advice of this book, you should research the downside and monitor your health constantly. In my case, my calves hurt (and not much); fortunately, my traditional doctor caught that this was a sign of blood clots whereas my new doctor didn't.

3 out of 5 stars Economic theory of work and gender.......2005-08-26

This book is an overview of how gender and race play into neo-classical economic theory. The authors discuss both macro- and micro-economic models, and how differences in gender and race can be explained using the models. Topics covered include: gender roles and economic development (in the US), division of labor within the family, allocation of time between the household and the labor market, consequences of women's employment for the family, differences in occupations and earnings, joblessness, and sex differences in other countries. The discussion is confined primarily to the US economy, although the theoretical aspects should be applicable elsewhere, and there is a brief section at the end of the book examining a few economic aspects of gender in developing countries, the U.S.S.R, and Sweden. Although the text generally focuses on gender differences, racial differences are also discussed with almost every topic. For the most part, the book examines only the economics of married heterosexual women, and women who are single or partners in same-sex unions fall outside the scope of the discussion. More in-depth explorations of theoretical issues are provided in appendices which follow several of the chapters. Each chapter includes a brief list of suggested readings. End material consists of an author index and a subject index.

The authors strongly advocate for women engaging in the labor market rather than restricting their work to household activities. They argue that this will likely maximize household income both in the short run and the long term, and provide a much better chance of financial viability for a woman and her children in case her marriage dissolves through divorce or widowhood. They also point out national policies, such as limited subsidies for childcare, that tend to make working in the labor market less attractive for American women. They point out that the families of women who take part in the labor market do not suffer adversely, and that the benefits for the family outweigh the costs.

Rather than simply reporting the facts about gender differences relating to economics, the authors seek to explain motivations and behaviors through economic theory. The book is filled with charts of supply-and-demand-type "indifference curves", designed to show how a typical person feels about participating in the labor market, and at what point he or she will join or leave the market according to possible financial returns. These charts are used both to explain labor market statistics, and to argue the authors' point that women should participate in the labor market. I found the explanatory approach interesting in its attempts to provide a theoretical basis for observed gender differences. However, I'm not entirely convinced that the assumptions that the theory is based on are correct. For example, the authors assume that couples will strive to maximize their income, but is this the real goal that couples are working towards? What about couples who seek to maximize their satisfaction in their family relationships, or their children's development, or those whose financial goal is only to earn "enough" and not to spend a single superfluous minute in the labor market? And what about those who participate in the labor market solely for the joy of it, and not for the financial returns? The possibility that some individuals might have different goals that would affect their participation in the labor market would probably complicate the models found here so much as to make them unworkable. The models must be made simple in order to work, but since the real world is more complex, it's not clear how relevant the simple models are for the real world. In general, the authors tend to overlook or downplay cultural factors that may have stronger effects on economic behavior than the theoretical economic factors that they discuss. Nevertheless, the book provides an interesting starting point for analyzing gender differences in economic behavior, and it also provides an excellent overview of research on women's labor market participation in the US through the 1980s.

4 out of 5 stars Gender Equity as Mainstream Economists See it.......2000-07-19

This book can be read at many levels -- used for a course or read as needed. You can answer questions like: How is unfair discrimination measured? Why do jobs that employ women pay less than those that employ men even if the requirements are similar. Go beyond romantic love to answer questions about whether marriage makes sense. Does welfare make peole work less? These two academics represent mainstream, what is called "institutional labor econmics." Anyone interested in the labor market, gender equity, international comparisons on how women are doing will find this book accessible. You do not have to have formal education in economics.

If you want self-improvement, you need this book.
If you want to gain a happier life, you need this book.

The book is a step-by-step guildline to improve your LIFE. It is practical and easy to follow. It really works.

Thanks Mr. Kyriazi, you wrote a great book.

You'd expect this to be a joke, but Kyriazi takes his Bond very seriously. This is an amazing book, one that gets you excited just thinking of all the possibilities that the techniques could open up for you. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars I'm not Bond, but I'm improving........2007-03-09

Kyrazi's Bond seminar book offers a lot of good, practical advice that, upon first glance, seems like a no-brainer. But just the fact that one has purchased this book shows that he or she is motivated to improve his or her lifestyle, and the advice offered in this title becomes more realistic and attainable than it was before with that first step.
Although the text is not the great American novel by any stretch of the imagination, and I would go so far as to say that it is poorly written as far as books are concerned, this is not the point of the book; nor is it the point of the book to turn someone into James Bond or even to get someone to accomplish all of the things suggested therein (you have to be able to pick and choose things that are relevant to your life, personally, as we are all unique individuals). The book is, however, meant to help someone achieve his or her maximum potential as a unique human being, and this is what Paul Kyriazi does extremely well in the book. I have seen immediate results, and I haven't looked back since. The only place to go is up.

4 out of 5 stars Bond by osmosis.......2007-01-22

I hadn't expected a curious thing that happened while reading "The Complete James Bond Lifestyle Seminar" book: I was already doing a lot of what I found there. But I'm in my early 40's and I've been watching and rewatching the Bond films for most of my conscious life (I'm currently rereading all of the novels and just finished Andrew Lycett's wonderful bio of Ian Fleming), so it stands to reason that something had to rub off.

But if you're in your 20's or 30's, I'm sure you'll pick up a lot of very helpful tips about the style of your new cool life. The author doesn't limit his seminar to 007 but also includes very cool and swingin' insights from Bond's American cousins--Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

I have to disagree with the author on page 217. He writes, "I've never seen Bond running out the door yelling, 'I'm late. I'll never make it.'" The section is called "Be Early." Good advice. And it's true that we've never seen Bond rush out late...but that doesn't mean he's always on time either. In THUNDERBALL, M chides him in front of the other double-O's with, "Now that we're all here!" And how many films have shown a flustered Moneypenny trying to track him down?
He might be late once in a while...he just doesn't get excited about it, even if the world hangs in the balance.

But that's a quibble, along with typos and the first half of the book mentioning "Blowfeld" instead of "Blofeld" (it's corrected in the second half).

So with tongue firmly planted in cheek and open to improving your coolness, you'll have a good time reading through this seminar for tips. I did.

5 out of 5 stars Starting a New Lifestyle.......2007-01-16

Fantastic read, Paul Kyriazi has something to offer everyone. I must admit, that I did not expect as much from this seminar as I recieved. This seminar serves as a road map to success, for the young man just starting out, or the older man preparing for a fresh new start. Insightful and witty, can't wait for the cd collection.

    Book Description

Your project went off without a hitch--but somebody else got the credit...You averted a crisis brilliantly--but no one noticed...You came to the meeting with a sensational idea--but it was ignored until someone else said the same thing...

HOW CAN YOU GET CREDIT & GET AHEAD?

In her extraordinary international bestseller, You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen transformed forever the way we look at intimate relationships between women and men. Now she turns her keen ear and observant eye toward the workplace--where the ways in which men and women communicate can determine who gets heard, who gets ahead, and what gets done.

An instant classic, Talking From 9 to 5 brilliantly explains women's and men's conversational rituals--and the language barriers we unintentionally erect in the business world. It is a unique and invaluable guide to recognizing the verbal power games and miscommunications that cause good work to be underappreciated or go unnoticed--an essential tool for promoting more positive and productive professional relationships among men and women.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to get along........2007-02-28

This book provides a great information on how to get a long with others in the work places men or women, this book will give you skills needed for teamwork and a better working place enviornment.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Working Woman.......2007-01-02

I wish I would have read this book 20 years ago. It was an eye-opening experience. As a female executive working in a male-dominated profession, this book shed new light on interactions I've had with male colleages, bosses and employees where I felt something had been "lost in translation" but couldn't put my finger on why. Put another way, this book teaches you the other gender's "secret language."

In a dream world, this would be mandatory reading for all men in the workplace. Males who are not aware of these communication differences are likely not hiring or promoting talented female employees because they misconstrue their politeness for passiveness, or their humble remarks (or even self-degrading remarks) for lack of confidence, etc.

As a working woman, reading this book gave me an advantage. After reading it, I find myself using a different communication style now with males at work than I do with females at work. At least now I am aware of how the "female" communication style I naturally use is probably being heard by my male superiors. Likewise, as a boss I've put this book, along with "Who Moved My Cheese?", on the reading list for new hires.

Substantively, I felt the book could have used some major editing starting about half-way through where it became a bit tedious. But it's worth the read for the important lessons learned.

Lastly, others have criticized this book for not offering solutions to the problem. The solution is awareness. If both genders are aware of these communication differences, the problem is virtually eliminated.

2 out of 5 stars interesting, however not useful.......2005-03-01

I listened to the audio book version of this book. At first, it seemed quite refreshing to know men and women were so different that you could explain in your work environment why people behaved like that. However, it just didn't give any solution and keep saying it over and over again in this book can bore anyone.
This book is more like a psychology paper rather than a practical handbook. The person who performed the book makes it more disturbing.
In one word, from this book, you will understand that people are so different that you can't expect others will think like you. Men are more hierachical and women are nice and think all men are equal. My understanding is that even if it is like this, you can only be yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but does not reflect all realities.......2004-11-21

The science of psycholinguistics is one of the hardest to write in, from what I see. For one, it's necessary to keep in mind that what may be the norm in a certain place for a certain time is not, de facto, what may apply to other places and periods. Also, the cultural influences on language happen to change fast, and the books that were relevant and up-to-date just a few years ago seem disappointingly irrelevant today.

Writing for a journal, where your research is given a proper time and place frame, is very different from writing popular versions made for the public at large. I recommend reading articles (Dr. Tannen has several that are excellent reads, among them _Gender in research on language - Researching gender-related patterns in classroom discourse_ Tesol Quarterly 30 (2): 341-344, from 1996) rather than books if you are truly interested in this topic.

As it is, and in spite of the good writing style, the book has far too many generalizations that do not apply to all places, nor do they apply to current times. I recommend "I Only Say This Because I Love You" instead, or even better, her articles.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment but still relevant book.......2004-06-08

I have read Deborah Tannen's first 2 books and I found them groudbreaking and very informative. This book however seems to be too much of a rehash of her first 2 books with a little bit of business communication stuck in the middle. I was disappointed by the book and believe there are better books out there than this one.

      Book Description

The Second Edition of this best selling book provides a comprehensive examination of the role that gender plays in work environments. This book differs from others by comparing women’s and men’s work status, addressing contemporary issues within a historical perspective, incorporating comparative material from other countries, recognizing differences in the experiences of women and men from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Relying on both qualitative and quantitative data, the authors seek to link social scientific ideas about workers’ lives, sex inequality, and gender to the real-world workplace. This new edition contains updated statistics, timely cartoons, and presents new scholarship in the field. It also provides a renewed focus on reasons for variability in inequality across workplaces. In sum, the second edition of Women and Men at Work presents a contemporary perspective to the field, with relevant comparative and historical insights that will draw readers in and connect them to the wider concern of making sense of our dramatically changing world.

        Book Description

This book examines common issues and concepts concerning women in non-traditional, male dominated occupations. It explores the question of whether these women are the agents of change or are instead changed themselves. It provides a statistical examination and theoretical analysis of occupational sex segregation in the UK, the rest of the EU, and the US. It provides a more in-depth understanding of women's work lives through the experiences of the women themselves in four occupations; management, academia, engineering, and the priesthood.

        Book Description

"I'm delighted to see the updated version of Women and Men in Management. This comprehensive volume is an outstanding resource for students, scholars, and professionals. Powell and Graves have done a great job updating the research literature and making it relevant with contemporary stories and examples. I particularly value the fact that the arguments are grounded in rigorous empirical research, while at the same time the writing is accessible to a wide audience. What a difference from the many sensation-seekers who inflame issues or exaggerate the differences between women and men in their quests for fame!"
--Alison M. Konrad, Fox School of Business and Management, Temple University

Around the world, women comprise a greater proportion of both workers and managers than ever before. However, women continue to be excluded from top management positions, segregated into low-paying occupations, and paid less for the same work as men.

Why does biological sex continue to have such a powerful effect in the workplace? Is it only a matter of time before individuals' work experiences are unaffected by their sex? Women and Men in Management, Third Edition answers these questions and more. It provides a comprehensive review of the literature on gender and organizations. To reflect the explosion of research during the 10 years since the second edition, the book includes references to over 900 sources, of which over 80% are new to this edition. The book covers a unique and wide range of topics, including employment decisions, work teams, leadership, sexual harassment, workplace romance, career development, the glass ceiling, work and family, and strategies for promoting an organizational culture of nondiscrimination, diversity, and inclusion. It offers concrete recommendations that individuals and organizations may implement to ensure that all people have fulfilling and productive careers, regardless of their biological sex.

        New to This Edition:

        * Focus on "where we are now"

        * Expanded coverage of topics that have received increased attention in recent years, including entrepreneurship, the glass ceiling, work and family, work teams, global leaders, career development, and employment decisions

        * Strategies for promoting a culture of nondiscrimination, diversity, and inclusion

        * An analysis of gender incorporates theories and research on the intersection of gender and other identities (race, ethnicity, age, nationality, and sexual orientation)

        * An international focus through references to research studies and statistics from around the world

        * Changes in the writing style and greater use of corporate examples have made this edition more accessible to a wider audience

Mary Healy presents the thoughts of John Paul II's Theology of the Body in an understandable beautiful fashion. It is one of the best representations of this great work that I have read or studied.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective.......2006-09-28

Mary Healy has an excellent grasp of John Paul ll's "Theology fo the Body," and her book, "Men and Women Are From Eden," is an excellent primer or study guide for anyone interested in tackling "Theology of the Body." This book is an easy read and drives home the creator's purpose for sex, relationships, marriage, and pro-creation form our Creator's perspective. This book should be required for all engaged couples, or married couples confused about the Churches teaching on birth control and divorce.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening Answers to Hard Questions.......2005-07-27

Healy, a scripture professor who holds a doctorate in biblical theology, begins with some background on John Paul II's reflections on human love as he counseled married couples as a young priest and bishop. During his first five years as pope, John Paul II presented his reflections on the "theology of the body" in a series of weekly addresses. This series, later collected and published, is the focus of Healy's work, and it is not light reading.

"The pope likes to begin with 'hard sayings' the words of Jesus that many find offensive because they seem too idealistic, too rigorous, and too severe," Healy reports. A basic element of the pope's theology defines body and soul as a unit: we are not souls attached to bodies; we are body persons; the body is the visible expression of the person, the outward sign that reveals the inner person. In that arena, the possibility of viewing the body as an object for our own or another's pleasure vanishes. The creation story reveals the inherent complimentarity of men and women, different bodies within the same nature called to relationship that can produce another human being. John Paul emphasizes the positive implication of this view. Rather than leading to denial of freedom, the theology of the body impels us to voluntarily channel our freedom into the total gift of self to a chosen spouse, and through that person, to God. And these general reflections may be broadened to encompass all persons, regardless of their marital state.

Healy aids readers of this enlightening and informative work with chapter-by-chapter study tools consisting of scripture references, church teaching, key concepts, questions for reflection and discussion, and practical applications.

        Book Description

In his earlier book Male Menopause, Jed Diamond exposed the worldwide reality that the often-joked-about phenomenon of "male menopause" is indeed a medical, psychological and emotional fact of life for millions of men. Diamond's new book offers guidance to and tells the stories of those perhaps as affected by male menopause as men--women.

Surviving Male Menopause examines the most current medical happenings, then focuses more strongly on the emotional, personal side of this life passage. Its effect on relationships and on the individuals involved is unmistakable. Through the recently rising voices of the men and women experiencing this change, Diamond seeks to show women and men how they can emerge on the other side happy, healthy and fulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars A book that finally pulled together what I was feeling..........2001-06-27

I had gone through 6-8 books about this change of life that men have reported to experience and that I was struggling with. This book spoke to me after the first 20 pages....finally, someone had written and was describing what I was feeling. Unlike some men, I enjoy my career and I am not cheating on my wife. But, something had changed and I was left quite confused. After reading this book, I got checked and found my testosterone level was low. Supplementation with testosterone had significantly improved my energy and I feel the best I have felt in several years.

This book describes well my experiences with the male menopause. While it is lacking regarding what to do once you recognize it, it is a great start. There is not much in the medical literature regarding this phenomenon; therefore, I cannot fault Mr. Diamond regarding this deficiency.

Well worth the money...I am trying to get my wife to read it!

5 out of 5 stars Save your marriage, read this book.......2000-11-28

I finished Surviving Male Menopause yesterday and gave it to my husband last night with many personal notes in margins and a letter from my heart....we talked briefly and I asked him to find at least 20 minutes a day to start...to be open minded and to let me know what he thinks and feels as he "reads" it, not just "skims" it....that we have been too good for too long to let misunderstandings of biological, psychological and social factors trip us up. I believe this book can help save our marriage

If you have a 40 year old man in your life read this book and Male Menopause. It will help you to understand what men are going through. Great Book!
