Customer Reviews:
text required for study.......2007-09-09
This text is one of three required for my study of Public Administration in the Masters level. It is easy to understand and an excellent text for understanding the sometimes confusing world of public policy.
Excellent Introduction to Policy Analysis.......2002-02-20
This is a very effective introductory text for the study of public policy. Rather than focussing exclusively on 'areas' of policy (e.g., agricultural policy, welfare policy, etc...), the authors develop the theoretical tools that allow the student to wrap his/her mind around the bigger issues. Students learn about how markets, governments and other mechanisms of collective action interact to help develop policy responses and the virtues and shortcomnings of each of these mechanisms. The book is easily digestible by undergraduates and is extremely clear, especially when explaining traditionally more complex ideas like social choice dilemmas. All in all, an outstanding text to learn about the study of public policy.

Book Description
Deaton analyses household survey data from developing countries, and illustrates how such data can be used to cast light on a range of short-term and long-term policy issues. Using data from several countries including Cote d'Ivoire, India, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Thailand, he examines the design and content of household surveys and explores the econometric issues for survey data.
Customer Reviews:
A masterpiece.......2004-03-31
This book is a masterpiece. In practice, it deserves to become the "Holy Bible" of Microeconometrics applied to (but not only to) Development Economics. It is beautifully written by an amazingly knowledgeble economist, who has actually worked for years (and still does) on most of the issues this book deals with. It is no easy reading, and it would be worth spending a day for every single page, but it's excellent even if you don't want to go through the details, and you just need an intuition about the issues covered. The first chapter introduces the reader to many important aspects of the contruction and use of household surveys. The second chapter masterfully reviews many concepts of applied econometrics. Chapter 3 is about poverty and inequality measurement. Chapter 4 is about "Nutrition, children, and intrahousehold allocation", Chapter 5 deals with prices and tax reforms, and Chapter 6 with saving and consumption smoothing. The book also contains many useful Stata codes the author wrote and used for his many papers. Again, this is not a trivial reading, but if you are interested in applied economics you will find reading this book extremely rewarding, and often almost entertaining, because Deaton is one of the very few economists around able to write about technical stuff in a brilliant and intuitive way.
Misadventure.......2001-11-15
It is a great book, and I would have not canceled the order if you would have shipped as your website said it would.
Deaton is the man !.......2000-03-22
This is an excelent manual for anyone interested in studying consumption or welfare in developing countries. Profesor Deaton is certainly one of the experts in the field. His book is well written and flows easily from theory to practice. Really enjoy it !
Book Description
Highly acclaimed for its clear exposition and up-to-date policy discussion, Kreinin?s International Economics: A Policy Approach, 9e offers a simplified yet comprehensive analysis of international economic relations. By providing a proper balance of theory, policy, institution, and empirical materials, the text exposes readers to an excellent foundation. Kreinin?s text is also considered the best existing International textbook for courses with an emphasis on policy issues. Written for learners with only one or two previous courses in the principles of economics, the book is designed primarily for a one- or two-term undergraduate sequence in international economics. However, it also fits nicely into many MBA and international relations courses. Part One of the book addresses international trade and commercial policy, while Part Two is devoted to international financial relations. The two parts are interchangeable and maybe studied in either order.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written- Very Confusing........2000-11-22
Not only this book is poorly written but in fact its also written in a very confusing manner. Dr. Kreinin does not provide us with adequate examples for the topic he discusses and furthermore there is not glossary in the textbook, which is crucial for the students to get some quick facts without memorizing the entire terminology used in the book. I was surprised to find this book as part of the required readings for classes at Michigan State University and Northern Michigan University. I recommend that this bok may not be used as part of the curriculum for the students. It is not helpful and its over-priced relative to its limited use.
Good Reference and learing tool.......2000-09-06
This books provides a very low level understanding of the concepts
Book Description
Using simple economic reasoning, this book analyzes a broad range of global challenges including global warming, ozone shield depletion, acid rain, nuclear waste disposal, revolution dispersion, international terrorism, disease eradication, population growth, tropical deforestation, and peacemaking. These challenges are put into perspective in terms of scientific, economic, and political considerations. This book is intended for a wide audience drawn from the social sciences. It should also interest the general reader who wants to learn about global challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Economic Logic Applied to "Global Challenges".......2001-12-25
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It takes the logic of economic theory (primarily economic game theory) and applies it to problems that either are affecting, or potentially will affect, everyone on this planet. These "Global Challanges" and the conditions necessary for their solution are then analyzed using the logic inherent to economic game theory. An excellent book that can be read by all people regardless of their knowledge of economics, as everything is explained with the assumption that the reader has never been exposed to the concepts. Helpful even to those who do have an understanding of economics.
An interesting application of rational choice theory.......2000-03-21
Sandler's book is very appealing in that he does not suggest that the panacea for all the world's collective action problems is a supranational government structure. In fact, he recognizes that "Nationalism is still alive" (Sandler, xiv) and therefore supranational solutions to these problems are unlikely. He searches for those conditions under which nations may act unilaterally (if their stake is large enough) or in a loose confederation to solve these "global challenges," rather than calling for an improbable and impractical supranational solution. Furthermore, Sandler's argument is appealing because he is able to apply it to broad variety of international problems-from environment to disease and security issues. In each case, he applies the logic of collective action to suggest the conditions under which progress might be made toward a solution. Most interestingly, Sandler suggests that there are different games at work in many of these collective action problems, each with unique equilibria.
Book Description
This outstanding text, a follow-up to the authors' award-winning 1982 text, provides a thorough treatment of economic welfare theory and develops a complete theoretical and empirical framework for applied project and policy evaluation. The authors illustrate how this theory can be used to develop policy analysis from both theory and estimation in a variety of areas including: international trade, the economics of technological change, agricultural economics, the economics of information, environmental economics, and the economics of extractive and renewable natural resources.

Book Description
How precisely do the Chinese negotiate contracts and other agreements? Do they follow conventions similar to those of European negotiators? To the Japanese? Is there a pattern or style to their negotiations? These are the types of issues examined and resolved in Pye's guide. The volume is based on extensive interviews with Americans and Japanese who have had considerable first-hand experience negotiating with the Chinese, and an effort has been made to highlight the areas in which there has been the greatest amount of confusion and misunderstanding for American business people. Pye examines each step in the traditionally long negotiating process, from the first contacts to the responses after agreements have been reached. With an emphasis on cultural considerations and troubleshooting techniques, Pye gives solid, practical advice for business firms and individual negotiators. While the emphasis is on practical business negotiations, anyone concerned with Chinese culture will find much to ponder in this book.
Customer Reviews:
So many words, so few pointers.......2007-01-30
The points of this essay could be conveyed in six concise pages but are buried in page after page of pompous prose. There are some insights -- but the reader has to plow through too many diplomatically (vaguely) worded paragraphs to find them.
Read the Chinese Mind.......2006-11-04
I first read this book 20 years ago when a consultant in Taiwan. After reading it, I felt I had been given the absolute script for how my clients were thinking. I was already successful with them, but this book was tremendously empowering. Even in non-adversarial negotiations, even in life with my Chinese in-laws, the principles gathered and explained by Pye are apropos and valuable.
Pye's own training in psychology well equips him for interpreting human behavior (check out his book on Mao), and his knowledge of modern China and its behavior is invaluable. In this book he lists specific characterics and behaviors common in Chinese negotiations: the way they use information, the way they try to manipulate counterparts, the way they analyze and leverage, the way they manage concessions. And his book is not based on theoretical analysis alone, it is based on interviews and meetings with dozens of business people with actual experience. He smoothly blends and synthesizes a vast budy of experience into this book.
Who would benefit from this book?
- Anyone doing business in China or with the Chinese
- Anyone working together with Chinese professionally
- Anyone teaching Chinese people
- Anyone married to a Chinese
- Anyone going to China for more than a couple of weeks
- Anyone dealing with China in political areas
By the way, Pye's other writings and books dealing with China are equally valuable. In late 2003, the Harvard Business Review featured an article on negotiating with the Chinese that was excellent. It never mentioned Pye, but said very little that he had not articulated many years before.
Read this and be enlightened. I have more than 20 years of business experience in Asia, speak Chinese, and count this as one of the most helpful books I have read on this culture.

For professional leaders, corporate managers, and students who wish to be leaders in human services.
Book Description
Transitions to democracy from authoritarian political systems have often occurred at times of economic crisis. The reforms required to transform the economic systems often cause sever material hardships for vast sectors of the population. Hence, new democracies forming under such circumstances confront a formidable challenge: to consolidate the nascent political institutions under conditions of economic hardship.
