Mumble mumble through the audio.......2007-09-25
This review is for the audiobook - although the content is good, the author should have gotten a professional speaker to do the narration. It is so ironic to be unable to LISTEN to a book about listening because the author munches her words, chokes off a few, stops and starts here and there, and flips her pages over so loudly that it is distracting.
I find myself focusing on her bad delivery as opposed to her good content. If you're going to get this book, make it a printed one!
Good Content but horrible voice and quality!.......2007-09-13
The book that this audio adaptation is based on is very popular however this CD package is garbage. All the posts are about the book but not the 6 CD set. First off some people are NOT meant to be recorded and Madelyn Allen is one of them. They should have gotten a professional speaker to read her book. Sometimes you can't make out her words and also you can hear her moving or shuffling papers as she reviews her notes as she goes along. Very unprofessional and low quality. I ended up giving this to my mother to listen too!
Good Teaching Tool.......2007-01-11
I used this book as the basis for an in-service training for nurses and social workers. It presents useful information in a convincing manner.
listening behavior.......2006-08-11
Classic guide to understand and improve your listening behavior.
My highest recomemndation.
No-nonsense guide to listening for business.......2006-05-25
No academic cloudy language. Madelyn writes with perfect clarity, organizes her material usefully, and knows what she is talking about. The exercises are excellent. I use this book in my seminars and workshops on listening for business and government people. I give it my highest recommendation, and have no ties whatsoever to the author or publisher. Enjoy!

Taking the mystery out of Six Sigma implementation
This easy-to-understand reference in the popular Demystified series teaches the methods of Six Sigma, explains their applications, and tests expertise without confusing statistics and formulas. Expert Paul Keller and Six Sigma guru Tom Pyzdek describe helpful tools for Six Sigma teams, identifying their uses, limitations, and application during multiple stages of DMAIC. They also outline additional tools for full effectiveness and provide necessary calculations and assumptions. In addition, they provide:
- Detailed examples and diagrams
- Practical exercises and complete solutions
- A final exam to test overall knowledge
- Materials ideal for self-study or for training groups of Black Belts and Green Belts
Customer Reviews:
Brown Belt for Now.......2005-09-12
Six Sigma is a tool used to measure quality for the purpose of eliminating non-conformance or defects in a process or product as I see it. Data collection is very important for analysis. Thus, data collection systems designs are important to this end. The statistical representation of Six Sigma is really the best benchmark to quantify and evaluate process performance. This book ultimately must rely on that fact. I found this book's reasoning similar to that of trying to define Standard Deviation in words. Standard Deviation is a formula. I did find this book thought provoking and I liked the fact that such concepts as Six Sigma are still alive. Most companies fail because they bring Six Sigma in but then give up on it. In my area of the country I have spoken to so many people who no longer use it even though their companies say otherwise. If you want to learn more about Six Sigma this really is not a bad book.
A statistical approach to project management.......2005-09-12
This book is part of the DeMYSTiFied series. These books are a little more sophisticated than the "For Dummies" or "Idiots" books. Of course they are sneaky with statements like "No fancy formulas" or "No staggering statistics" both statements that must have been written by rocket scientists. That is what this book is "Plain monstrous Formulas" and overwhelming statistics." But the truth is there is no other way to explain "Six Sigma."
The book seems more geared towards Quality than projects but the same thinking process is there. Just as there is a TQM mystic and now PMI's PMBOK we have a Six Sigma culture with it own language that also usurps terms as green and blank belt.
In the end they take what should be a strait forward mathematical problem and attempt to apply it to the unknown to come up with a working risk analysis.
Using this method most projects will survive nicely on two to four sigmas. However this is one tool that I would what to know is at my disposal when tackling the next project. And this book does a good job of getting you off the ground.
Overly Ambitious (after 20 yrs still not buying the idea).......2005-08-08
First rule of selling. Sell to the top! I guess that's why this book continually talks about Executive involvement and Management involvement. Sorry, business theory is moving back to "Managers making it easy for all employees to succeed in their jobs." So stop selling your consulting time to the Executives and making them feel important.
Most of this book is on project management. And this book's explanation of project management is seriously lacking. This is a deep and complex subject please don't think you can give some of this technique's buzz-words and walk away.
Some of the statistical references are good however, the application of these are not fully explained.
Remember selling ERP and Y2K is over, so time to sell Sarbanes, 6sigma, etc. Scare the Exec that they are going down and make some easy money. Maybe its good for business to try some kind of change even if its not the correct method of change.
Book Description
A comprehensive, hands-on guide to what it takes to be an outstanding personal or executive coach, this must-have book is complete with a detailed "how to" techniques section and fifteen outstanding examples from the world's top coaches.
Customer Reviews:
Mental Health traning plus.......2005-10-04
If you're a mental health professional, chances are you have adequate training in psychology to be an executive coach, but how about training and experience in OD and in business? these are necessry to be credible and effective in executive coaching. See a complete competency model on the website (...) NEW page.
Therapist becoming coach?Ethics section makes this a must..........2002-04-04
To psychotherapists who are entering the coaching field: You must get this book. It is packed full of ethical issues you need to understand and will also get you started right away with necessary skills.
The subtitle of this treatise "The Complete Guide for Mental Health Professionals" is no misnomer. This book is complete. It takes you through the transition from your mental health background to the closely related field of coaching. It does this smoothly, through three well-written sections, ending in a crescendo to the very helpful Appendix.
The first section clearly lays out the differences between the fields (in approach and language), moves you through a very effective and comprehensive model of coaching (including a perfect New Client Questionnaire), to the ethical issues that you must know to make the transition a safe one. The ethics section and Dr. Auerbach's research with attorneys is worth twice the admission fee. For example, all sources researched agree that you need to keep your two businesses separate - no dual Web site advertising. You won't need to worry about losing your license after reading this section.
The second section covers techniques, processes, and the use of assessments, which will be familiar to most therapists; however, Dr. Auerbach does an excellent job of pointing out the subtle differences that are key to making you act and sound like a coach instead of a therapist.
The third section covers the major varieties of coaching, and can even help you assess which area you are best fit to work in or which you will be most passionate about.
The Appendix is very helpful, and includes samples of forms to use; including the above-mentioned New Client Questionnaire, a Coaching Agreement, and other helpful questions and questionnaires to help you get clients and to start those first few sessions.
I highly recommend this book to any mental health professional moving into this exciting field.
Personal and Executive Coaching.......2001-11-27
Executive Coaching is hot. A number of people from various professional backgrounds provide personal and business coaching for managers and leaders. Dr. Auerbach has written a wonderfully comprehensive manual for mental health professionals who bring a unique background to this exciting discipline.
In a clear, concise and thoughtful fashion, Dr. Auerbach clarifies the essential differences between coaching and psychotherapy. Underlying, his philosophy of coaching is a focus on the client's values. He delineates a model of coaching that provides an excellent guide for the coaching process.
Dr. Auerbach discusses the legal and ethical issues involved in coaching that is extremely helpful to both beginning and seasoned coaches. He thoroughly explains how coaching is conducted on the telephone-a process likely to be unfamiliar to many therapists.
The book is "jam-packed" with specific practical techniques, how to incorporate assessment instruments, and illuminating coaching examples. The resource section includes invaluable samples of letters of agreement to use with coaching clients and powerful coaching questions.
Therapists desiring to enter the exciting world of coaching and seasoned coaching professionals, will find Dr. Auerbach's wise counsel a roadmap for their success.

Customer Reviews:
As good as the title "QUICK".......2007-09-16
I purchase this book hoping it was simpler than the original shorthand. It is easier and quicker, no complicated new language for you to learn. As long as you practice daily and use it as often as you can it will come quickly and naturally.
Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficient.......2000-03-16
Very easy and practical guide to writing quickly & efficiently! I bought this book because I am tired of writing everything in longhand and I'm not a very fast typist. I am currently writing a book and am tired of getting hand cramps from so much writing. This book teaches a system of writing that is understandable & easy to learn. It has you write words the way they sound, and leaves out most of the vowels. Example: i wl cu u n - kr. Translation: I will see you in the car. I have heard bad reviews on how hard short hand is to learn because of all the symbols. Quickhand is a life saver! Buy the book. Even if you just use a few examples in writing it saves a lot of time and space when transcribing your ideas to paper.

Craving Straight Facts.......2003-08-15
I am a Mechanical Engineer with a BSME and minor in Naval Science. My BSME studies required I take eight credits in Economics, in which I did well. But this book surpassed those studies in many ways by dealing straight-away with the basic concepts of world economy, practical theory, history, and practical application, in short... macro-economics; without bogging me down with excessive microeconomics. But ended well with an excellent rehash on microeconomics. The book reads fast for a study book, and the author is a refreshing writer, honest in opinion, but not over opinionated, of good humor. I answered all the questions in the back of each chapter. Felt like I took a no-sweat 3 credit cours. Now I'm ready to study economics in its many specialty subjects. Anyone who is considering economics study on a collegient level, should study this book first; then they'll know. I highly recommend this book.
Highly Recommend!.......2003-04-09
I have read a few Economics books for beginner, but none came close to this one. In particular, I would like to point out several strong points that clearly put this book above all else:
(1) This book is systematic, clear, and concise. Most of all, everything the author explained is right to the point without any flowery illustrations that plagued most other economic books.
(2) It starts out with a brief look at the major economic events in the 20th century starting from the 30's, then it deals with Macroeconomics and then Microecomics. The concepts build on one another, so that you will always have a sense of how things are actually connected with one another. The examples are also very vivid and memorable.
(3) The questions that are provided at the end of each chapters are excellent in driving the concepts home.
For those of you who are thinking of buying a beginner's guide to Economics, this will certainly be my first choice!
Great book to start with.......2000-09-23
This book starts from the basics and works up from there. I has helped me build a build a soild foundation to build on.
Wonderful, Simple Reading.......2000-04-30
This is a terrific workbook for anyone just trying to start out and learn a little economics. It has great practice problems too.

Customer Reviews:
Useful, lots of practices.......2006-08-18
A very useful book for changing your attitude towards others and towards yourself. It has a lot of exercises. Some of the examples can be skipped, since some of them tell the same things.
So-So.......2005-12-30
I was disappointed in this book. Way too much time was spent on telling you how to build your own self-esteem. Some of the review exercises are overly simplistic. I emailed a work situation and question to the author; she replied that she charges $85 for a one hour telephone consultation fee. Hmmm, $85 plus the $20 I already spent on the book. Sorry, not worth it, even at only the book cost.
"Managing Assertively" by Madelyn Burley-Allen.......2000-11-28
Managing Assertively is an excellent teaching quide for improving your people skills. It gives defination to the different types of supervisory styles that exist. The book uses exercises to teach an eight step building block plan for managing assertively. This plan can be used daily to improve your supervisory skills. A great book to build confidence and self awareness.
Getting To Know All About You.......2000-03-29
A super self-teaching guide for managers (and others) who want to develop assertiveness skills! This isn't just a book of theories. There are practical exercises and lots of self-assessment tools. It's worth adding to your reference shelf and sharing with others.
Wondering why you're having trouble getting through to someone? Need to turn a personality clash into a more productive relationship? While this book doesn't promise to cure all your woe's, it offers techniques that are simple to apply and they work! It helped me identify the events, thought processes and attitudes that influence the results I get when interacting with others. You'll be surprised at what you learn about yourself. These easy to adopt behaviors can improve your relationships with others. Try it and see.

Thorough Instructions on how to run a great martial arts school........2007-09-05
This book has a wealth of information about running a dojang (dojo). From dealing with the difficult student to organizing a class with specific drills, this book covers everything a good instructor needs to at least think through. I particularly liked the aspects of running a business; when to advertise, how to run a radio spot, what to do when enrollment drops, when to expand and when not to. If your business is teaching martial arts, you must have this book.
great book.......2007-05-14
Martial arts desk reference is a wonderful guide that no instructor should be without. Good ideas, for high ranking , as well as student instructors. great book
Great Reference for Instructors and School Owners.......2006-07-22
I found this book to be a great reference in running my school. I have made it required reading for all my instructors and staff members. I highly recommend this title to all those running a martial arts school.
Don't Even Hesitate.......2006-03-10
If you are a martial arts instructor - or soon to be one don't hestitate to buy this book. The book has an incredible amount of school operations widsom. It is obvious the author is a seasoned martial arts instructor.
Use it daily.......2005-07-13
I've had this book for only a few weeks and I find myself using it daily, especially the sections on class drills and marketing ideas. I love the way its set-up - no heavy reading, no long theories to wade through, lots of bulleted lists and short articles that I can read while I'm stuck on hold with the phone company or waiting for an appointment. Not to say there isn't in depth information - the articles teaching ADHD kids and kids in general are excellent, as are the class management articles. Overall, this is an invaluable reference for instructors who have their own school and even for those teaching at school owned by someone else. Another excellent reference by Sang H. Kim.

If you don't get it; he won't explain it.......2001-11-17
This book does not offer a step by step explanation of its problems. If you don't get it; he doesn't explain how to solve the problem. He doesn't understand that writing out the answer is not teaching you how to solve the problem. He doesn't tell you why he does what he does to solve the problem. He just solves the problem and hopes you figure out what he's done. Personally, I'm not that good at math.
