Study Guide for Gravetter/Wallnau's Essentials of Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, 5th
ASIN: 053463396X |
Book Description
This brief version of Gravetter and Wallnau's proven best-seller offers the straightforward instruction, accuracy, built-in learning aids, and wealth of real-world examples that professors AND students have come to appreciate. The authors take time to explain statistical procedures so that students can go beyond memorizing formulas and gain a conceptual understanding of statistics. By integrating applications to ensure that even students with a weak background in mathematics can understand statistics, the authors skillfully demonstrate that having an understanding of statistical procedures help them comprehend published findings, and become savvy consumers of information. Known for its exceptional accuracy and examples, this text also has a complete supplements package to support instructors with class preparation and testing.
Customer Reviews:
Didn't find it helpful.......2007-09-02
I didn't find this a helpful assistance to the text. It didn't give any explanations to the formulas or shortcuts that I expected. It was more like a dictionary for the text book (words and definitions).
Great for people who ask "but why..." at the end of every statement. .......2006-05-10
This book is absolutely excellent. I have looked through other stats books and lost interest immediately, but this book is written in such a way that it actually makes you want to learn the material. Rather than just telling you how to solve the problem, the authors inform you as to why learning it is necessary, and frequently give you real-life, interesting scenarios regarding how specific formulas are used by psychologists.
Statistics, of course, becomes progressively more difficult over time, and you may need to seek outside help once you reach the last few chapters in particular. However, I believe that this book is the best of its kind, and it might be worth purchasing even if it is not your primary source for class, etc.
Good moral support.......2006-03-23
My first impression was that this book was priceless since it really helped me through the first couple of chapters in the main text. At the beginning it goes into lengthy, step-by-step instructions. I may not have felt as confident in the class if it had not been for this supplement. Once I reached chapter 6 and 7 it was all over! There was not enough information to help me understand what the book was losing me on, I needed to seek private tutoring at this point. Occasionally I still go to the book in the hopes that it can pick me up and get me through the homework but it does not. These later chapters may be too complicated to go into in a study guide but what would a study guide be for if not walking you through the steps? I am glad I bought it, just dissappointed that it quit so early.
Fantastic Statistics Resource.......2005-09-22
This is the very best statistics book that I have purchased (and I have purchased 5 others trying to help me get a grasp on this subject)! I would recommend it to anyone who needs an easy--to-read and easy-to-understand textbook on this difficult subject! I hope it helps you as much as it has helped me!
Wow! Clear, Concise, Excellent Book.......2005-05-19
Having seriously struggled for the last two years with the statistics side of my Psychology studies, this book has really made things so much clearer. An excellent book for anyone struggling to grasp the basic statistical concepts required in behavioral sciences.

awesome.......2006-04-28
In the introduction, the authors state "our goal is to provide readers with books that will deliver key practical information in an efficient, accessible style." The authors have clearly met their goal - the book is clearly written and the examples are engaging and interesting. As the authors are professors, I was very surprised by this.
I used this book to update my knowledge of basic research, and it was perfect. I think it would also be an ideal introduction to research design for beginners.

ASIN: 0130193399 |
Book Description
This book helps readers become intelligent consumers of the social/behavioral science literature and familiarizes them with the fundamental tools of research. It features a conceptual, intuitive approach that is less math-oriented (e.g., not cluttered with all sorts of sub-and superscripts, and not concerned with mathematical derivatives of the various statistics), and that clearly shows the continuity and interrelatedness of the techniques discussed. After the necessary concepts have been explained and the calculations have been performed for each statistic, the text walks readers through a line-by-line explanation of a computer printout (based on actual data) containing that statistic. "Practice Applications" provide research examples with step-by-step solutions to all statistical procedures. Describing Data. Central Tendency and Dispersion. Probability and the Normal Curve. The Sampling Distribution and Estimation Procedures. Hypothesis Testing: Interval/Ratio Data. Analysis of Variance. Hypothesis Testing with Categorical Data: Chi-Square. Measures of Association with Nominal and Ordinal Data. Elaboration and Causal Analysis. Bivariate Correlation and Regression. Multivariate Correlation and Regression. For anyone in the social/behavioral sciences who needs an accessible introduction to statistics.

Book Description
This text uses the same conceptual, intuitive approach of Basic Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, but eliminates extensive reference material and advanced or obscure statistical methods. Essentials presents only the procedures undergraduates need for reading research literature and conducting their own studies. New terms are integrated with more difficult concepts in an accessible, non-threatening format that provides concise explanations, creating a foundation and making further elaboration easier to understand.
Students learn more intuitively through examples drawn from everyday life, and virtually all involve specific variables and research questions instead of generic data. Once students review the learning goals for each chapter, they follow a focused structure that emphasizes understanding of general concepts and procedures, supported by Remember sections that recall calculations or interpretations of a statistic. Two-part end-of-chapter problems offer Review Questions, which require students to define terms and outline procedures; and Application Questions, which ask them to perform procedures, interpret their results, and critique others.
- A Quick Review sections revisit concepts, provide worked-out examples, and help students check comprehension through review questions.
- Chapter 12 presents a nonmathematical discussion of the two-way ANOVA and covers the concepts of collapsing, main effects, and interaction. Computations appear in a separate appendix.
- Computational formulas appear in color throughout each chapter and key terms are highlighted, reviewed in the chapter summary, and listed in a key terms section.
- Students can use summary tables and sections to organize and integrate the separate steps in previous sections; and review material in comprehensive chapter summaries.
- End-of-chapter material includes a summary of formulas, while comprehensive lists of formulas and symbols appear in the front and end matter of the text.
- A Word About sections include self-contained, brief descriptions of additional procedures that instructors can include or omit without affecting students' understanding of later chapters.

Customer Reviews:
The best of the best.......2007-09-07
This Rosenthal & Rosnow book is destined to be a classic (the 2nd ed. already is). Rarely will you encounter this level of philosophical breadth, statistical depth, and historical perspective so well unified in a single text in any field. And all of it is as clear as a glass of gin in the sun. I keep mine close by my desk and refer to it often.
The next generation of behavioral science students will be lucky to start with this one and have it as a lifelong reference.
E. K. Foster, PhD
Clear and Comprehensive.......2006-11-20
This book is a must-have for those in the behavioral sciences. We used it as a textbook in my psychology MA course, and even years later my classmates and I keep it within arm's reach on our bookshelves and refer to it as "Bob's red book".
Don't waste your money on this.......2004-01-03
My background in statistics was not very helpful to understand this awfully soporific, pedantic book : it inflicts on you hundreds of references pages after pages. Not a single chapter is ended with exercises. To my misfortune I had it as a mandatory textbook in an Information System course at NJIT -- imposed by an unscrupulous "distinguished professor", whose background is sociology, as a favor to the authors, apparently.
Excellent and comprehensive text.......2001-11-25
This is one of the most comprehensive and clearly written textbooks for graduate level behavior science methods I have come across. I learned from this book myself and, now as a professor, I will be using it in my graduate class.
The Grand Daddy of Methods Books.......2000-01-06
This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.
