Revealing look at women's strength and power.......2007-03-09
Eavesdrop on any group of women lunching at the next table and you are likely to witness laughter, tears, support, commiseration and collaboration in action. Entrepreneur Vickie Milazzo identifies how women can best utilize these natural feminine capabilities to achieve life and career success and fulfillment. Milazzo dedicates an insightful, thorough chapter to each of the "10 Feminine Forces" she has identified. She uses personal stories and the experiences of successful women to coach you to new, unexplored heights. Sometimes her attempt to motivate through her personal saga crosses the line from inspiring to self-congratulatory. Yet, if you set aside this editorial flaw, you have a well-scripted formula for success. We recommend this book to all women who share a spark, a dream and the desire for a richer, fuller life.
Will make you think differently about reaching your goals.......2007-02-15
I've never read a self-help type book before, and probably wouldn't have picked this book out on my own. I recieved a copy of this book through a marketing campaign, and figured that I'd give it a shot.
I usually fly through novels and non-fiction books, so I've had to take a completely diferrent approach to reading this book. I've been plowing through it, one chapter every week or so, and it's been having some impact on how I think about my professional life.
The book is filled with the author's anecdotes as well as stories of other women, and guides you throuh exercises that break down your goals and actions. I'm finding it helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to help them understand how to reach their goals.
Wonderful book.......2007-02-14
I really like the book. It provides motivational examples and good analysis. It's about how women can be successfully in their lives. Make a wonderful gift to any woman you know.
My newest guide for success.......2007-02-11
Filled with thought-provoking gems of wisdom and the real-life examples to back them up, I found this book to be a wonderful source of motivation as I think about "what comes next" in my career.
Inspiring.......2007-02-05
At first I wasn't sure that this book was for me, as it focuses on ways women can be successful in business and I had no desire to open my own business. The more I read, though, the more I realized that this book helps women to be successful in everything they do. The strengths and promises Vikki outlines, such as flexibility and integrity, are crucial to success in any area, whether as a mom, a teacher, a corporate employee or a CEO. This book has inspired me to strive for more in my personal and professional life.

Helpful.......2007-01-04
I found this book helpful in the course that I took in Mathematical Economics. It was a useful accompaniment to the text used in the course, Fundamentals of Mathematical Economics by Alpha Chiang.
A solid introduction.......2000-05-12
...to the topic, although a bit more depth would be the only thing lacking it. I recommend it to anyone who is studying business and is struggling with the math side of it, although as you progress in your studies, you will notice that the book doesnt go into enough depth, especially in the area of differential geometry.

Customer Reviews:
Has greatly improved my understanding of mathematical economics.......2007-09-07
This book has been a great help in understanding mathemayical economics. Each subjet starts with an explanation of how the math works. Then works each problems step by step to show how it all works together and they don't skip steps like some economics texts do. With the help of this book i am inverting matrix.
Good book .......2005-07-23
This is a good book for those studying calculas or various business subjects. It is easily explained with a lot of examples.
An excellent resource.......2005-06-18
This is an excellent book for non-quant jockeys who want to brush up on their mathematical skills for upper-level or graduate-level econ courses. The best strength of the book is its organization. After a chapter on introduction and discussion of a mathematical technique or theory, a chapter on the technique's application is presented. This is an excellent way to not only reinforce the material but demonstrate its applications and relavence to economics.
However, several caveats should be noted:
First, I believe that the ideal reader should already have some exposure to calculus. For instance, Dowling discusses the fundamentals of differentiation in about 26 pages, which is far too little if one is learning calculus from scratch. If the reader already has some exposure to calculus (as I did), then Dowling's chapters on differentiation and integration could be used as review.
Second, the learning curve really steepens in the latter chapters when Dowling discusses differential equations as he appears to sacrifice detailed explanations for brevity.
Lastly, I think the reader would be best served to use this book as a resource and not just as the main text. Mathematical Economics is a very broad and challenging subject, and as good as this book is, it only scratches the surface of a complex topic. I would also recommend "Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics" by Alpha Chiang.
Highly recommended.
The book is pathetic.......2005-01-18
Each question posed by the book is accompanied by a solution, which is a good thing, however, the solutions provided by the text include very few steps and little explanation. Furthermore, the questions in the text are way too simple. [...]
Mathematical Economics (3rd Edition).......2004-02-22
This is an excellent book. I would recommend it for anyone wishing to learn mathematical economics. It is equally beneficial to college students, who can use this book as a supplement to their textbook, and to those who want to use this book for self-study. For anyone who is weak in mathematical knowledge, the author presents the necessary mathematical skills needed to understand how to work the problems. As the author states: "No mathematical proficiency beyond the high school level is assumed at the start." All the required concepts are clearly explained.
The problems range from the easier to the more challenging ones. For example, some of the chapters include doing proofs, although these are limited to a minimum. In fact, only the chapter on "Simultaneous Differential and Difference Equations," out of all the chapters, contains a greater proportion of problems dealing with proofs - a little less than one-half of the total problems at the end of this chapter involve proofs.
This 3rd edition excludes three chapters on linear programming which were included in the 2nd edition. However, three other chapters were added instead: comparative statics and concave programming, simultaneous differential and difference equations, and optimal control theory.
I believe the author has done a very good job in presenting a difficult subject in an understandable manner.
Book Description
Real accounting for today's students: Libby/ Libby/ Short wrote this book with the belief that financial accounting is an inherently interesting subject, but traditional textbooks are often not so interesting. In the Second Edition, the authors continue to bring the material to life offering the most real-world driven financial accounting text on the market. By writing the entire book based on real company annual reports, presenting material in a logical manner appropriate for introductory students, including active learning features, and further emphasizing the uses of accounting information, the Second Edition will continue to captivate instructors and students across the country.
Customer Reviews:
Not Helpful.......2007-05-07
Rather than summarizing or outlining basic concepts in the Libby, Libby, Short text, Cram101 offered little more than a list of vocabulary terms which accompany the text (and can be obtained free of cost on McGraw Hill's website) I would not recommend these outlines to anyone who is looking for a thorough review of Financial Accounting.
Useless Study Guide.......2007-05-07
The left pages contain lists of definitions while the right pages are left blank. Other than that, there is nothing else in the book.
Possibly the worst textbook I ever used ... .......2007-02-11
This is the first book I have ever reviewed -- and it is only because I feel so strongly about it. This book is nowhere near being a beginning accounting textbook. The authors take for granted that the reader understands accounting terms as clear explanations are few and far between or missing completely. Perhaps the authors are far too advanced to be able to explain the basics of their business. The content is very confusing as are the multi-colored, multi-boxed, multi-fonted, multi-faceted, CNN/USA Today-style pages. I would definitely NOT recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand accounting to any degree.
Excellent Introductory text for Accounting.......2006-11-19
Given how dry a subject Accounting can be (especially for non-Accounting majors) - this book really was fantastic. It serves up excellent examples, has a modern, graphic and splashy style that made it easy to follow along and refer back to key terms, and I liked the tie-ins to business in the general commentary. It's a great text for a self-paced course like an online accounting course offered at Berkeley. I felt like I learned a lot from this book.
Shopper Satisfaction.......2005-09-29
Actually, the supplier no longer had the book available. But the supplier contacted me immediately and my account was credited almost as quickly as the money went out. So I am still a happy shopper.
Book Description
This book walks students through the basic concepts and techniques of differential and integral calculus, particularly as these relate to the theory and problem-solving required in the disciplines of business, economics and the sciences today. Simple calculations and examples, and more then a thousand problems with detailed solutions, help make it easy to understand how calculus works.

Since i'm studying for my first actuary exam, i was looking for a book that can help me pass the test. I didnt have to read a whole book to understand the problems. Schaum's Outline of Calculus for Business, Economics, and The Social Sciences helped me solve problems fast and easy! i recommend this book for people who need to learn in less time!
Book Description
Millions of educated, professional women are quitting their jobs to stay home and raise their children.
That would never be you, right? You worked hard for your degree and even harder to get to this point in your career. Quitting now, even for a few years, would kill your career. Right?
That’s what Monica Samuels thought when she found out she was pregnant and boy, was she wrong. Once you have a baby, your life changes in ways you’d never imagine. Some of your friends and family members may think you’ve gone a little crazy—crazy enough to leave a salary and paid vacations to stay home with your child. Before you go storming into your boss’s office to announce your departure, read this book. There’s more to quitting than saying the words. There’s strategy involved.
Over 60 percent of professional women who leave work to raise children want to go back into the workforce someday. If you even think you might want to go back to work, be it in one year or twenty, you need to lay the groundwork now for a successful reentry or your options will be limited. If you do a little planning, you can reposition yourself professionally and have the choice to one day get back on the same career track, shift gears, accelerate, or change careers entirely. And, if you’ve already been out of the workplace for several years and never thought you’d go back, you’ll learn about the best strategies and resources for jumping back in.
Comeback Moms is a practical, commonsense approach to career planning for all mothers. Monica Samuels and J.C. Conklin examine every conceivable angle and obstacle to help you make the best decisions possible before leaving your job, during your time at home, and once you decide to return to work. They offer advice on how to keep one foot in the professional pool, when and if it’s best to go back to school, setting realistic expectations when re-entering an old career, helping your children adjust when you do go back, and on the logistics of rebalancing marital power when a spouse leaves or re-enters the work force. It's all here in an invaluable guide for every woman who wants it all.
"Proving once again that there is no one-size-fits-all approach in women's lives, Monica Samuels and J.C. Conklin's insightful book reveals to us the delicate and complex balance of family, power, and career. A must-read for both women and men seeking to manage career and family sucessfully."

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-03-04
I bought this book for my wife and she's been sharing a few excerpts from it. She is really enjoying it and I also found the tips very helpful.
Insightful and Informative.......2006-08-14
I bought this book after reading a very favorable recommendation for it ([...]/2006/06). Although I normally don't invest in books like this, I found it intriguing and relevant to my life so I got it.
This book is filled with excellent advice on how to tackle balancing career goals with the needs of a family and covers almost every topic imaginable in the process. I especially enjoyed the tone in which the information is presented using humor and anecdotes to make many of its points, but still providing a tremendous amount of insight and valuable information. It is exactly what I was hoping to find - - informative, yet enjoyable to read.
I must say I was surprised to find an Amazon review of this book that suggested it was "patronizing." As a wife, mother, and student I found the information to be very applicable to most women I know. I see this book as being addressed primarily to women who spent a great deal of time and effort pursuing their education and careers prior to becoming wives and mothers. Their families and friends expected them to continue with the dreams they talked about as young girls and they are not used to hearing them now put the role of wife and mother as number one. I found the book to be an excellent look at life from that perspective, and although it is a great read for anyone, it is particularly relevant to that group of women. Thankfully, there are many such women out there. These women want to put their families first for a time and then get back out in the work place to pursue the careers they love.
Bravo! I'm glad to see there is something out there for us too!!!
Couldn't stomach the patronizing tone, or the Karl Rove references..........2006-08-12
The topic of this book is a great one: preparing women who decide to leave the workfore while raising their kids but want to return someday. I picked this book up at the library and was excited to get some good advice.
However, I could not get past the patronizing tone that the authors use towards their readers! Maybe some people like this kind of "Girlfriend's Guide" approach to the topic, but I found it to be totally demeaning to women.
Here's an example. One of the chapters is focused on preparing financially to leave the workforce--a great TOPIC, by the way. Here's an excerpt from that chapter:
"To figure out if you can stay home or not and for how long, you have to know your financial information better than you know Britney Spears's [sic]love life."
Blech..like I need to be ripped away from the gossip pages-give me a break. It goes on...
"Once you determine where your money is going, you'll know if you can cut back your spending and by how much.
Sit down with all your monthly bills.
Sometimes it's better to do this with your husband, empasis on the SOMETIMES. If he's a big spender and needs to understand how much debt the two of you are in and what you need to do to save, then take him through it. Show him the large stack of papers and corresponding checks you're about to write. Scare him into saving."
Scare him into saving. Nice attitude. It goes on:
"Maybe he's the one who usually pays the bills and you need to figure out what's going on with the budget. You're the big spender. Buy yourself a bag of candy and force yourself to go step by step over the budget with him."
BUY YOURSELF A BAG OF CANDY??? Like you couldn't possibly tackle something financial unless you have a bag of candy to pacify you? But there's more...
"Educate yourself. Think of this as the horrible prerequisite you have to take in order to graduate. Muscle through it."
Yes, because LEARNING about finances is so horrible that it must be muscled through. Ick. It goes on...
"You'll gain some shopping willpower when you look at the credit card bill and truly understand how much of your money goes to shoes and manicures."
SHOES and MANICURES??!? Could we get any more stereotypical? Yes, of course one of the steps to becoming financially independent is reviewing your expenses and determining wants vs needs, but must we reinforce steretypes about women's vanity?
Later on in this chapter the authors give advice about cars, and what kinds of sacrifices can be made to build up savings before one person stops working.
"Also, if you live near public transportation can you and your husband mangage with one car? We know it's a horrifying suggestion, but give it some thought. Obviously, if you live in a place like Texas or California or Nebraska where public transportation is an oxymoron this isn't an option for you."
It's horrifying to suggest that a family might make do with ONE car?? And if you live in Nebraska having less than two cars ISN'T an option? Have these people even heard of the concept of carpooling? I won't even talk about the use of the word oxymoron here, but last time I checked there was indeed public transportation in California.
I must also add that one of the authors goes out of her way to name drop her association with KARL ROVE as though that is something that is going to win over her readers. Maybe you're the kind of person that is impressed by Karl Rove. Maybe you think these "jokes" and chatty tone are funny. Maybe having less than two cars IS horrifying to you. If so, you will probably like this book.
But if any of this stuff raises your hackles, don't even bother picking it up. And if you have a better book to suggest, do it here on Amazon--we need an alternative to this one!
So Helpful!.......2006-07-31
This is a terrific book for any woman considering leaving the workforce, as well as for those who already have done so. Specifically, the section on "How to Shore Up your Finances" covers many helpful topics -- for both pre and post baby arrival, and gives great suggestions for monetary savings and other often overlooked financial considerations. Additionally, the chapters on "Part-time" work and "Entrepreneurs" gave me insight, encouragement and *confidence* for pursuing the many opportunities that are still possible for each of us.
With delicate humor and targeted advice, this book made me realize that I'm not alone in my feelings and experiences in deciding to stay home. Comeback Moms is a wonderful reference and a valuable resource!
Fun read.......2006-07-30
I am really glad I got this book. It has tons of great ideas and interesting anecdotes. The good news is you may see yourself in this book. The bad news is you may see yourself in this book. There will be useful information here for any woman thinking about re-entering the work force.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the money.......2007-04-23
This book is most certainly not worth the $40. I bought it at the suggestion of my macroeconomics professor and have been severely disappointed by it. The summaries of the chapter sections are good, but the questions are awful. They help somewhat, but the major problem is that many of the answers in the back of the book are flat out WRONG. And it's not just 1 or 2 here and there, it's several per chapter. So if you're looking for a study guide for macroeconomics, this is certainly not the right book. My macro professor has since gone back on his suggestion to use this text.

Excellent!.......2007-02-22
Throughout this book, Michelle Johnson illustrates attitudes, behaviors and perfect examples we all face in the work place as African Americans, and what we can do to overcome the obstacles. My favorite chapter was the advice she gives regarding language, pronounciation and syntax with people of another race.
Great book w/ humor and lessons intermingled..........2006-03-19
I was searching for "The Pact" when I saw this book, and I'm so glad I found it. I just left a temp. job for a mortgage company where 16 out of 25 employees had said something completely insensitive to black people, homosexuals, or people whose first language wasn't English. I'd grown so fed up with them down-talking other cultures that I told the temp. company I was working for that I was quitting. Luckily for me, the next week I found a permanent job in my field and accepted the position. I was relieved to find perm. work but even more relieved that I'd never have to go back to that place again. I took my anger out in writing and ended up writing an article (later published) about the racism, sexism, and narrow-mindedness that I experienced in that company that was equal to the same negative experience I watched at Northern Michigan University.
So I swallowed every single word of this book and the author was RIGHT on the money. I thought the anecdotes were very helpful because they illustrated the different types of discrimination in the workplace and why it can hurt/help a legal case. It also showed that folks who are going through situations like the ones I saw in college and with the temp. job are not alone. Even when discussing such technical topics as legal issues, the author throws in a great amount of humor, which makes this book even easier to read. Lil' Kim had me dying laughing at work. I had to excuse myself from my desk so I could laugh out loud some more. The James Baldwin quote was hot...I totally dig that. I realized that after going to NMU, I'd turned into a thriver. I refused to put up with anything. I went through several jobs after college and decided to try being a survivor at the temp. company. After the first month, the thriver bumrushed the survivor in me, and I just started lashing out. Although the comments died down, they only stayed away from black people and increased in the other two. I've learned the hard way that many folks are idiots and thrivers are the best ones to handle them. I'm far too contumacious to be a striver.
And now that I have the job I wanted (editor) and the freelance job I love (writing opinion editorials), I'm content as a thriver.
The only flaw I saw in this book was on pg. 105 when the author says that Roland and Lisa have "a lot in common..just by the two of them being the only black interns in a big company." I thought the author should've pointed out that other 85% issue because just because the two interns were black does not mean that they would have a "lot" in common. I've worked with a bunch of brothas & sistas that I would NEVER hang out with, so why should Roland try to make friends because of skin complexion? That other 85% is big in folks going out to lunch. I also thought the author was inaccurate with saying that stress was the major factor in black people being overweight--food is. Black folks have some of the WORST eating habits...and that by far outweighs stress and smoking. When we eat, we smoke. When we are stressed, we eat. And when we're happy, we eat more. And I'm not talking about carrots either. Watch "Soul Food" once and you'll get an idea of why so many of us are overweight.
But other than that, this book was on the money! Note: My $14.95 was well spent and I've had MANY paperback books of the same quality which did not mess up. Sometimes it's the way folks treat their books that lend to the problem of the condition of the book. Hint, hint.
Thoughtful, insightful and practical.......2006-02-27
Michelle Johnson addresses the common history we share as African Americans, and how it differs from the early history of other immigrant groups in that our ancestors were brought here so that others could benefit from our labor. She also articulates and categorizes subjective experiences. Often being the only or one of the very few blacks in the workplace we can feel isolated. Her anectdotes are very helpful as examples of her theories of common personality types and situations. I highly recommend this book as business literature and will also submit this review to the American Library Association Black Caucus list.

Affirmation and Facts.......2006-01-18
I found the book a great affirmation of what too often is the experience of Working While Black. True, there weren't solutions, but like reading the facts of a situation, provides comfort in establishing that you're not invisible and there's a larger institutionalized system at work. It helps when things such as stereotypes, discrimination, racism are being offered on a personal level as other than what it is, attempts to undermine your humanity and the equality of humanity.
It gave me relief, too, in its spins of humor. Yes, sometimes we have to laugh rather than cry. As far as not stirring people to act in one way or another, what the book does is provide an experienced insider's knowledge of how the system may play out. Better to know how things may play out than go in blindly believing race doesn't matter and that institutionalized racism isn't perpetuated within and outside the courts.

The book I bought from Eric was in excellent condition, plus it arrived only 3 days after I had purchased it! Great service, perfect product!
Very helpful.......2001-10-29
I have never been too crazy about or never been good at economics, but after reading this book, I feel I understand the real-world economics better. For a novice like me, it is relatively easy to follow the contents because it's full of examples from real business world. I assume this book will be satisfactory to more "academic" readers too because the book still doesn't fail to cover real economic materials like graphs and theories.
Good Book.......1998-11-24
This book provides an excellent background for learning applied managerial economics. Mr. Baye uses interesting real-world examples, which is difficult when writing about the entirely hypothetical world of micro-economics. I felt that the section on Game Theory was especially useful in explaining real world market paricipant behavior in pricing decisions. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for both students of economics, as well as those non-students seeking a weekend of light reading in the topic of economics.
