Book Description
Maeve Binchy once again brings us an enchanting book full of the wit, warmth, and wisdom that have made her one of the most beloved and widely read writers at work today.
When a new highway threatens to bypass the town of Rossmore and cut through Whitethorn Woods, everyone has a passionate opinion about whether the town will benefit or suffer. But young Father Flynn is most concerned with the fate of St. Ann’s Well, which is set at the edge of the woods and slated for destruction. People have been coming to St. Ann’s for generations to share their dreams and fears, and speak their prayers. Some believe it to be a place of true spiritual power, demanding protection; others think it’s a mere magnet for superstitions, easily sacrificed. Not knowing which faction to favor, Father Flynn listens to all those caught up in the conflict, and these are the voices we hear in the stories of Whitethorn Woods—men and women deciding between the traditions of the past and the promises of the future, ordinary people brought vividly to life by Binchy’s generosity and empathy, and in the vivacity and surprise of her storytelling.
Maeve Binchy is at the very top of her form in this irresistible tale.
Customer Reviews:
Single Voices Combine To Tell the Story.......2007-09-09
Maeve Binchy is one of my favorite authors and is extraordinarily gifted in telling stories in an amazingly inviting manner. Each chapter of Whitethorn Woods is told from the perspective of someone who either lives in or has a connection to Rossmore, a small town in Ireland. As she has done with some of her previous books, the chapters are each almost a short story in themselves. Characters (written in her charmingly warm and descriptive style) from each chapter intertwine and collectively tell the story.
The many individual voices from each chapter gives you insights and nuances you would not have if told from the perspective of one or two people. The end result is that the story was more about the people of the town of Rossmore - with the plot line actually becoming secondary - and I felt almost as if I'd visited the town and it's citizens by the conclusion of the book. Goodness usually prevails in Maeve Binchy's books and that is satisfying in itself.
I enjoyed Whitethorn Woods more than the author's last, Night of Rain and Stars, but I don't think it's her best (Tara Road among them). That said, any Maeve Binchy book is a soothing and enjoyable read that is probably better than three quarters of the books out there and worth reading!
A nice, pleasant book.......2007-09-08
This is a nice feel-good book--a pleasant read. At some points, I felt like each story was much too contrived. I love being swept away into another world when reading a novel, but it didn't quite happen with this book. Some parts were too unrealistic, and others too predictable. The ending was nice, but not satisfying. Overall, it was a nice book to read at the beach, under an umbrella.
Maeve's Done it Again!.......2007-08-27
Maeve Binchy's newest book is a charming addition to her body of work. There is humor and drama in a bittersweet mix. This book was as enjoyable as all her others.
Unconventional characters come alive.......2007-08-20
No one can make characters come alive in a few short paragraphs better than Maeve Binchy. She brings the most interesting characters to Whitehorn Woods, a satsifying page turner set in a small Irish town. Based on a proposed highway that would destroy St. Ann's well, which is thought to bring miracles to many, we meet diverse characters who are somehow connected to the shrine. Ms. Binchy is a genius when it comes to creating a conventional person who has more depth and layers than we would expect.
All of the characters have challenges and they learn how to use their talents to better their lives and others. I would have liked to have some of the stories resolved, particularly the tragic tale of the stolen baby. It probably was more realistic that the long-suffering mother never knew what happened to her daughter, but I did want the child robber punished and the child to know her background. I could come to terms with the other characters' fate, but this story was the most heartbreaking.
There is a "Hollywood" ending in regards to the proposed highway which tied up the many pieces of the plot. And, of course, the hero was the character who was not considered the brightest or most ambitious. A good read.
Splenid Characters and a Refreshing Story.......2007-08-08
I have read a number of Maeve Binchy's book and I have enjoyed them all. Whitethorn Woods is another story to add to her wonderful books. This story was written in a different format but still the characters are clever and appealing. The story reveals a Irish priest that is concerned that a lot of his parishioners, wanting a miracle to happen, make a trip to a well in Whitethorn Woods. He is amiss as to what he should do. The author introduces a variety of splendid characters giving those characters feelings and beliefs about the well. Then there comes a problem: a road is to be built that will run straight through Whitethorn Woods and the well. I hope I haven't given away too much of the story for those who haven't read it. In summary, it's a delightful and refreshing story and I would recommend it to all my friends.
Another refreshing story that I would recommend is Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders. This is a stunning Women's Fiction that gives a breathtaking view in the life of Zoie Baker. Determined to build a swimming pool by gathering aluminum cans this warm and fabulous story by an author that has a smooth and silky prose will not disappoint you. Check it out it's just a wonderful story. All 530 pages. So long.
Book Description
In the debut crime novel from the Booker-winning author, a Dublin pathologist follows the corpse of a mysterious woman into the heart of
a conspiracy among the city’s high Catholic society
It’s not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It’s the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. Odd enough in itself to find Malachy there, but the next morning, when the haze has lifted, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse—and concealing the cause of death.
It turns out the body belonged to a young woman named Christine Falls. And as Quirke reluctantly presses on toward the true facts behind her death, he comes up against some insidious—and very well-guarded—secrets of Dublin’s high Catholic society, among them members of his own family.
Set in Dublin and Boston in the 1950s, the first novel in the Quirke series brings all the vividness and psychological insight of Booker Prize winner John Banville’s fiction to a thrilling, atmospheric crime story. Quirke is a fascinating and subtly drawn hero, Christine Falls is a classic tale of suspense, and Benjamin Black’s debut marks him as a true master of the form.
Customer Reviews:
Tough Read.......2007-10-06
I gave it a hundred pages, just as I promised myself. Mostly, it was a chore to read. What annoyed me the most was that the author would switch to describing another scene with no transition other than a paragraph.
I truly hate this book.
Couldn't get into it.......2007-10-02
I tried to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I read about half of it. It just never seemed to take off. Plus it didn't place me in the period. Some good books you feel like you are in the time that they are placed. This didn't do that for me. A big disappointment.
The only thrills are in the prose........2007-09-27
The characters and the basic plotline are more than adequately summarized in many of the other reviews. John Banville (Benjamin Black) is an extremely talented writer and is, as reviewers have noted, quite adept at drawing characters and evoking setting. His talent as a writer of prose cannot, I think, be denied and this book is a fine example.
The problem, however, is that the plot is (a) not entirely plausible and (b) becomes obvious way too early to hold any real suspense.
As for the plot, again, there is no real suspense in discovering who is behind the various crimes. The motive is slower to emerge but, as it does, it does not ring true. My own opinion is that Benjamin Black has quite a bit to learn about this new genre. This book lacked any "aha!" moment, as revelations in the murder/mystery plot were never very mysterious. All opportunities for thrill were deflated before any real suspense could build.
On a minor issue and as others have pointed out, Black dispatched bad characters far too neatly to give any satisfaction.
Banville's skills have not yet translated to a satisfying Mystery/Thriller. At least, I was wholly unsatisfied when the book ended. Perhaps, my dissatisfaction was due to too high expectations.
The prose is worth the read, but the story comes up short.
And a lot else falls..........2007-08-12
Not being familiar with Banville, I was drawn to this book by the reviews and my ongoing desire for a good mystery. The novel's premise seemed appealing. A young woman is dead. Pathologist Quirke becomes curious when he finds his obstetrician brother, Mal, going through the file. Quirke's own investigation unleashes violence and ultimately involves his whole adopted family.
Certainly the writing meets the standard of literary fiction. The structural contrast of Quirke and Mal frames the book. Quirke deals in death, Mal in births. One won his love, the other didn't. And so on.
The first 50 pages of the book held my interest, as Quire began snooping around. The viewpoints shifts form one character to the other - very smoothly done. But I began to get a sense of deja vue. The reasons behind the woman's death...we've seen this before.
Ultimately, despite the writing, I think you'll enjoy this book if you like novel about convolutd, politely dysfunctional families. I did't find the character interesting or sympathetic. Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder was a more appealing drunk.
The ending falters. It's like one of those farces where nobody is they seem. I found the rationale for the solution unbelievable, even given the power of the Catholic church. Ultimately the fictional plot pales next to real Irish stories, like the Magdalene sisters.
Distinctive writing makes for outstanding "thriller".......2007-07-21
I read Untouchable a few years ago and recall it a difficult, dense albeit engrossing book. I had been tempted to read The Sea, but reviews focusing on the beautiful writing yet slow plot discouraged me. It was wonderful to find out Banville was deploying his talent as writer in a lighter form. Christine Falls certainly does not disappoint, to the contrary: it makes one wish that all "thrillers" were written with comparable skill and ingenuity
Christine Falls certainly does not thrill for pace or chases or plot twists. It does so through characterizations and through gradual revelation of long held secrets. The secrets matter and move because the characterizations make us care - I can`t recall a thriller (and can recall few other works) where the cast of main characters is so original and so carefully portrayed. Also, some parts are excruciatingly dramatic to the point of being painful.
The back flap indicates this is the first of the Quirke novels. I will be looking forward to the next one
Book Description
Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization, 6th edition provides the most accurate, relevant, and complete presentation of strategic management today. Authors Michael A. Hitt, R. Duane Ireland, and Robert E. Hoskisson thoroughly revised each chapter, weaving cutting-edge ideas, research, and modern practice to create a presentation that captures the dynamic nature of the field. The authors integrate the traditional industrial organizational model of strategic management with the more modern resource-based view of the firm to explain how firms use the strategic management process to build a sustained competitive advantage.

Bought for class.........2005-12-21
if your class is using this txt, i would highly recommend buying a used copy... new editions come out on almost a yearly to bi-yearly basis... after i completed my course, my book store would not buy the book back because the professor ordered a different edition for next semester...
Strategic managment -- a clear choice.......2005-09-09
This is an excellent text that is the bible of many strategy professors around the US. It is clear, concise and very thorough. the case studies at the back of the book offer a great deal of practical examples. I highly recommend making this book part of your professional reference library.
Strategic Management in the Context of Globalizatiion.......2000-11-14
This book is a detailed investigation of strategic management in the context of globalization and competitiveness. An integrated approach is used, but firm-based theory of strategic management is stressed throughout the book. Cases included in the book are chosen properly in relation with the topics, that is theory is clearly connected to the real experiences. Especially, topics titled as "Cooperative Strategy" , "Corporate Governance" , "Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation" will be very useful to better understand the planning dynamics.
The book is divided into two sections. One is assigned for theory and the other is assigned for cases. Cases are updated and includes the most popular and fabulous companies such as "Amazon.com". Overall, I recommend this comprehensive book (1008 p.) to readers who wish to have a grand source !
Highly Overpriced by Publisher for Quick Profit Seller.......1999-09-01
Don't bother buying this book unless you 'absolutely' have to have it for a class you might be taking or for special research. I found this book to be better than most, however it is ridiculously overpriced and would best be left on the shelf to collect dust than to fork over a whole days' wages on this book.

Short and excellent treatment of the subject........2007-07-06
An astoundingly good read! Short and well-supported, this book looks at how slavery changed over the centuries. Originally, slavery wasn't really based upon skin color or ethnicity, but it grew to have those connotations later. In Italy particularly there was a peculiar sort of melting-pot of all cultures/backgrounds of slaves, and since Italy was rather fond of bureaucracy, we have a lot of records of slaveholders, sellers, buyers, and occasionally the slaves themselves. The book includes information about where slaves came from, how old they tended to be, what names they usually had, how long owners kept them, and what happened to them after they were freed or resold. It also discusses the Church's changing opinion on slaves and how to treat them. The subjects of Muslim vs. Christian slaves and owners, piracy, and ransom are also covered in detail. I found the information contained herein to be absolutely invaluable in learning about the practice of slavery during Renaissance times. Don't miss this book.

Customer Reviews:
A must if you are traveling.......2007-09-20
Once again Rick has made what could have been a dry guide book interesting, fun, and full of information that travelers really want to know. It takes talent to write a book such as his, fun to read for the sake of reading.
I highly recommend Rick's series of Travel Guides. Buy them and enjoy even if you aren't trotting the globe.
Best Book for Ireland Ever.......2007-09-12
Rick Steves really takes you on the best trips around Europe. His descriptions are spot on and his maps are easy to follow. I would never use any other tour book when traveling.
Rather a point of view.......2007-09-07
You have to hand it to Rick Steeves: he carved out a niche in the travel business by focusing on average travelers, and trying to make their journeys better than average with useful information. I agree with his overall philosophy that spending more money doesn't necessarily enhance one's experience. However, he often lapses into a disconcerting lecture -- never quite a rant -- about how Americans should be quiet, humble, considerate, etc. when they venture abroad. I for one could do without his preachy style. If I am considering a trip to Ireland, and have come as far as Steeves' guide for information, it stands to reason that I'm no yahoo who expects a "Top o' the mornin'" from Irish people, or a McDonalds in every town. There are some of us who are educated and curious travelers, just as there are boobs from Over There. But then, Steeves isn't writing a book to lecture European dolts, is he?
Aside from the overdone bits about how rude Americans are, Steeves curiously leaves out some wonderful sights in Ireland from his guidebook. I loved Bantry House, on the Beara Peninsula, but there's no mention of it. Likewise, he neglects the must-see island of Ilnacullen in Glengarriff, with its Italianate villa and gardens. He also missed niceties like the Avoca handweavers (great tea and scones on the go, upscale wearables, etc).
Some of his estimates for how many days to give each town were off. Kinsale rated two days. Though it's a small town, the harbor, fortress, wine shops and surrounding activities alone were worth a bit more time. I don't know anything about his B&B recommendations, other than the fact that his choices were 10-15 euros more expensive than my picks in the same regions, with not much lost in hospitality or cuisine. I realize you can't cover it all, but with the Internet being such a great source of info, it's hard to rely on just one book for accommodations. Experience is wisdom.
Great Ireland Guide.......2007-09-06
Great ideas for minimizing expenses while maximizing enjoyment. Ireland is our favorite place outside of the U.S., but Rick's guide always has "new" information that makes another trip a better experience!
Good. basic guide.......2007-08-18
If you are traveling to any place where you feel you need a guidebook, I think it is foolish to rely soley on 1 guidebook. While I wholeheartedly agree with previous reviews that Mr. Steves omits (for the most part) whole areas of Ireland, I did find my opinions of the places he did review to be in sync with his reviews. When I sifted through this book and Frommers, I was able to piece together an itinerary that suited my family's interests. It is easy to be disappointed with any guidebook if you base your whole trip on it.

Book Description
In 1975, four teenagers from Mount Temple School in Dublin gathered in a crowded kitchen to discuss forming a band. The drum kit just about fit into the room, the lead guitarist was playing a homemade guitar, the bassist could barely play at all and nobody wanted to sing. Over thirty years later, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. are still together, bound by intense loyalty, passionate idealism and a relentless belief in the power of rock and roll to change the world.
Watch a video introduction to U2 by U2 |
In a epic journey that has taken them from the clubs of Dublin to the stadiums of the world, U2 have sold over 130 million albums, been number one all over the world, revolutionized live performance, spearheaded political campaigns and made music that defines the age we live in.
From the anarchic days of their Seventies punk origins through their Eighties ascent to superstardom with the epic rock of The Joshua Tree, the dark post-modern ironies of Achtung Baby in the Nineties and their 21st-Century resurgence as rock's biggest and boldest band, this is a tale of faith, love, drama, family, birth, death, survival, conflict, crises, creativity . . . and a lot of laughter.
Told with wit, insight and astonishing candour by the band themselves and manager Paul McGuinness, with pictures from their own archives, U2 by U2 allows unprecedented access into the inner life of the greatest rock band of our times.

true story of u2 genius.......2007-08-24
Reading this book is the same as getting to know members of the band personally. I was especially amazed by the stories on how they started at the end of 70's, they reveal all the insides of their struggle to get recognized. The power of these people and their incredible belief in the future of what they were doing deserves the attention of not just U2 fans but also anyone who's interested in being taken into this amazing journey of four personalities. Highly recommended, worth of every penny spent
Excellent .......2007-05-14
I purchased this book as a gift for my boyfriend. He hasn't stopped talking about it and continuously quotes facts about U2 that he's read in the book whenever we're together. I'm very pleased with this purchase. I wouldn't have known about the book if it wasn't reccommended in the "if you liked this, you might also like that" section when I purchased a U2 CD. Thanks!
THE PICTURES ALONE ARE WORTH THIS BOOK!.......2007-05-13
Excellent book!, writen in anecdote format. The pictures alone are worth this book, you will not believe how beautiful they are. Written in a heart-warming and personal fashion. I would recommend this book to any music fan, for a u2 fan it is a must!!!!!!!!!
Fabulous.......2007-05-02

Pure Joy.......2007-04-10
I do not generally read non fiction and picked this book up for the photos. To my surprise, I actually read it cover to cover. It was interesting to learn the origin of the songs. For years I have been singing U2 word for word without realizing the meanings behind the songs. I had no idea that this group was so spiritual and found the book to be inspirational as well. Get all your U2 CDs out as you will want to play them in chronological order with the book.

updated?.......2007-09-01
I'm not sure I trust the quality of update in this guide. First, the Rome metro diagram was not up to date...by about five years. It didn't include the Cipro and beyond stops. And, at least one of the addresses in Milan was not correct. I ended up knocking on the business' back door!
Frommers Itally 2007 .......2007-08-03
I received Frommers Itally 2007 book before the seller indicated that it would arrive! It was in excellent condition and has been very useful thus far.
Frommer's Italy 2007.......2007-07-04
This is an excellent book to use if you are planning a trip to italy, in terms of the quality of the information, it is informative and is also up to date, furthermore, the maps are both accurate as well as in proportion; the only fault we found with it, is that it lacks pictures, thus, it is excellent as a guide and planner, but has to be used in conjunction with the net, to be able to view images of the sites.
A lot of SMALL WRITING & hardly no pictures!.......2007-05-14
If you like to read small print and not see any pictures, then this is the guide for you. I was disapointed. I have ordered several different guides for Italy and this was not a good one since I enjoy visual displays to go with great writing. This was a lot of dull small printed writing with no visual effects.
I WOULD SUGGEST "DK Eyewitness Travel Italy"it is wonderful with the visual displays and historic lessons. It was very colorful and had the everything I was looking for.. maps, photographs, area color codes to divide sections, shopping suggestions, survival guide. bus and tram routes mapped out, and historical/travel lessons.

No where can I find such good value other than at Amazon. The shipping is waived most of the time, and the prices are fantastic. The delivery is always timely. Even though I can purchase some items locally I try to use Amazon more often than not. This item is for our upcoming Mediterranean Cruise and we are finding it exceedingly helpful for planning our journey.

Although Eyewitness Travel Guides may offer more visual guidance than other guide books, they are still quite terrible. Maps are difficult to read and information is inconsistent.
Wonderfull guide book for Ireland.......2007-06-10
Excellent book for anyone going to Ireland for a few days or a few weeks. Compact, with most important information in details, yet quite complete for the other sights. Easy to take with. A good example of excellent DK travel guides. Not all of them worth 5 stars, but this one does.

If you're taking a trip to Ireland and have never been,
or even if you've been multiple times, this guide is

are far fom comprehensive, but it does give a good
sampling of each in all regions. And if you're just
roaming freely not following a strict itenerary, the
book will nearly overwhelm you with destination ideas.

We have traveled frequently and find these guides most helpful. They are concise and easy to travel with. The information they provide is quite necessary if you want to fully explore your destination.
Bring your magnifying glass!.......2007-04-16
I just received this book and I am VERY disappointed. It probably is a very good guide book but the print is so light and small that I am having a terrible time trying to read it. There is no way that I can try to read it while in a car or airplane. Just be aware - it is VERY hard to see the print.

Customer Reviews:
Good content; small font, fair illustrations.......2007-09-20
If you are looking for a graduate level introduction and explanation of strategic management concepts, this is a solid choice. If you expect nice illustrations for texts at this price point - and a readable font for those of us who can't handle small print - look elsewhere. Graduate textbook are expensive because we are a captive audience, and this book is lacking some of the nicer mechanical tools that other graduate texts have at its price range.
The material is laid out well, there aren't superfluous stories, and the progression is logical. I am likely to keep this book after the class is finished.

the condition is so good but it takes quite long to be in my hand
A necessary evil - horrible writing.......2006-10-07
This book was a necessary evil for a capstone MBA class.
It contains information that could be useful to someone that hasn't looked at MBA texts before, but in my case I feel like "well duh! I already know this!"
To make things worse, there are factual errors in the book that make it frustrating to read.
Furthermore (having read all of the book) the writing and grammar is awful! Didn't anyone proof read this book?
Overall, I would say that this is an OK book so far as theory is concerned - but it was rushed to go into production which brings its redeeming qualities down.
