HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON.......2007-08-06
MY GRANDKIDS WILL ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I DID AS A CHILD WHEN MY MOM READ TO ME. IT HAS ALL HIS WRITINGS.
Andersen deserves better.......2007-03-10
It is just sad that publishers like this one are opportunistic and know that just because Andersen is on the cover the book will sell. The translations are rickety and unreadable. And the quality of the book is disappointing. I immediately resold mine and bought another, far superior, volume. Don't get taken for a ride.
This book is for adults as much as children.......2006-10-27
Hans Chrisitian Andersen's fairy tales are incomparable. They have a level of depth absent in any other collection of fairy tales including the Grimm Brothers, Arabian nights etc...He amalgmates magic and reality and seals them in beautiful poetic expression. You will feel pain and love, rejection and hope, despair and persistence. The characters and images are sad yet impeccable. The tales are vivaciously symbolic of your dreams and reality. My favorite tales are The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid(which is way different from Disney's version). They are a must-read.
Not for kids.......2006-07-09
I first read HCA when I was about 8 and I remember being baffled at their deviation from the standard "fairy tale" formula. They stayed with me however.
I bought this edition because I wanted to explore more of his work and I am very glad I did. I have finished about 3/4ths of this volulme and the richness, satire, obersvation, depth, humor and relevance of the themes continue to awe me. It's not a book for children but for those adults who want to go on adventures with a master storyteller.
Every one should read.......2006-02-25
This is the perfect gift for a child or adult of any age who enjoys reading.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Colourful and informative.......2007-06-14
I am planning a family vacation to Denmark and I wanted to get some information on places other than Legoland. I found the information in this guide very useful.
It is well organized and easy to look up places in the book. For example, the publishers have divided Denmark into a number of regions and these are colour coded. Southern Jutland and Legoland? Look in the yellow section.
It is informative: I learned about Danish history, customs and culture. There is a good overview of Danish design and this is followed up in more detail in the respective entries. The section on Danish history is illustrated with pictures of paintings, sculptures and photos again in full colour.
My only reservation about this book concerns the scrupulous fairness of all the entries. Visitors are looking for information and insight, both good and bad. Is Tivoli really worth the time or is it an overrated tourist trap?
Overall, however, I am happy that I purchased this book over the others.
I did some time consuming searches on the internet for information about Denmark but I should have saved myself the trouble and bought this book first.
The Best Book for Denmark and Copenhagen.......2007-04-19
Despite my past enjoyment of Eyewitness Travel Guides for other countries and cities I originally purchased a competitor's travel guide for Copenhagen. I am planning a trip to Copenhagen and bought one specific to the city since DK Eyewitness only publishes one for all of Dennmark - big mistake. I opened the book only to find page after page of text with few maps or pictures. Needless to say I waited a few days and then came to my senses and ordered the book I knew I should have purchased all along. Of course there was ample information on Copenhagen itself and my original fears that it would not be adequate just weren't realized. I am never disappointed with the Eyewitness books and usually end up sharing them with others on trips. As the other reviews confirm, this is THE book to buy for a trip to Denmark or simply Copenhagen. Don't waste your time and money on any other book.

DK,s Denmark, aside from Copenhagen this is a complete and colourful guide that helps bring Denmark to life...Not that the Danish are short of Life but it allows the outsider to creep in and enjoy. A companion guide that simultaneously allows one to find those cosy spots. Don't leave without it, essential travelling assistant.

Had the perfect blend of pictures and history. Could have had a wider shopping section (like something other than clothes, you know), but that's no different from all other guide books.
Book Description
The year is 1807, and Richard Sharpe is back in England, where his career seems to have come to a dead end, despite his heroics in Britain's recent victory at Trafalgar. Loveless, destitute, and relegated to the menial tasks of quartermaster, Sharpe roams the streets of London, pondering a bleak future away from the army.
Then, out of the blue, an old friend invites him to undertake a secret mission—the delivery of a bribe—to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Denmark is officially neutral, but Napoleon is threatening an invasion in order to capture the powerful Danish fleet, which would replace the ships France lost in its disastrous defeat at Trafalgar. The British, fearing such enhancement of French power, threaten their own preemptive invasion, and Sharpe, whose errand seemed so simple, is trapped in a web of treachery that will end only when the city, which thought itself safe, is subjected to a brutal and merciless bombardment.

PerfectBound e-book extra: ""Bernard Cornwell On: The Origin of Richard Sharpe, Sharpe's Adventures, and Sharpe's Trafalgar Plus: Become a member of the Sharpe Appreciation Society. Bestselling novelist Bernard Cornwell returns to his popular Richard Sharpe series with this eighteenth dazzling installment, which finds his beloved hero in the heart of war-torn Denmark, trying to protect the prized Danish fleet from Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitions. The year is 1807, and Richard Sharpe is back in England, where his career seems to have come to a dead end. Loveless, destitute, and relegated to the menial tasks of quartermaster, Sharpe roams the streets of London, pondering a bleak future away from the army. Then, out of the blue, an old friend invites him to undertake a secret mission -- the delivery of a bribe -- to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Denmark is officially neutral, but Napoleon is threatening an invasion in order to capture the powerful Danish fleet, which could replace the ships France lost in its disastrous defeat at Trafalgar. The British, fearing such enhancement of French power, threaten their own preemptive invasion, and Sharpe, whose errand seemed so simple, is trapped in a web of treachery that will end only when the city, which thought itself safe, is subjected to a brutal and merciless bombardment. Sharpe's Prey - the chronological sequel to Sharpe's Trafalgar - finds Bernard Cornwell at the top of his bestselling form, combining the meticulous historical detail and fantastic battle scenes he's famous for with a plot that races at breakneck speed toward the final, bloody battle that threatens to destroy Copenhagen.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Series.......2006-08-15
This is another entry on the Sharpe series. It is fun, entertaining and very readable. Cornwell's research is as excellent as usual. He takes some licenses for the shake of the story and continuity, but this is OK. Some people are outraged by the portrait of some of the real historical characters, but historical characters are rarely depicted accurately in historical fiction, so I think this can be forgiven. Besides, usually a more serious account of these characters is given at the end of the book on the Historical Note.
Many people insist in compare this series with Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander. I don't think this is fair for any of the series, they are different entities. What they have in common is that once you start you may get hooked and devour one book after another...
And in the literary world today that is a rare and marvelous thing.
Vintage Cornwell, vintage Sharpe, but non-vintage English cruelty.......2006-05-09
You have to give Bernard Cornwell credit -- for a Brit (albeit one who emigrated to Cape Cod) with a warm affection for his homeland, he sure is capable of giving it a stick in the eye. And what a sharp, brutal stick it is, too.
"Sharpe's Prey" takes place in 1807, a couple of years after Sharpe helped the British navy destroy the French at Trafalgar. That book, "Sharpe's Trafalgar," ended on a high note for Sharpe - triumphant, rich, and hopelessly in love.
Bliss lives a brief life in Sharpe's world, and "Sharpe's Prey" opens with Sharpe destitute and lost -- even his home, the British army, doesn't seem to want him anymore, putting him in the thankless and totally inappropriate role of quartermaster for the 95th Rifles.
But through a murder, hope springs anew for Sharpe, as an old friend sends Sharpe as hired muscle on an important mission to Copenhagen, Denmark. The Danes, though neutral, had the second-largest fleet in Europe, and the Brits learned that through a super-secret treaty, the Russian emperor gave Napoleon the Danish fleet. (Just think of the arrogance of the Russian and French leaders at that -- giving away a fleet that wasn't theirs!)
So Sharpe is charged with escorting a British agent and 43,000 guineas to Copenhagen as an inducement to the Danes to keep their fleet out of Napoleon's hands. Unfortunately for Sharpe, the British agent is a dastardly and lethal fellow named Lavisser, who has no intention of giving up 43,000 guineas or of letting Sharpe get in his way.
But the book really focuses on one of the black marks in British history, the firebombing of Copenhagen. As one can expect, the Danes resisted the British overtures and wanted to remain sovereign (recognizing the British offer for what it was). As a result, Sharpe finds himself amidst a Copenhagen that for three days becomes a raging inferno as the British navy launches thousands of firebombs per day into the city -- a city they knew held thousands of women and children.
Cornwell pulls no punches in his virtuoso descriptions of those hellish nights. "Sharpe's Prey" may be one of Cornwell's shorter novels (a mere 260-odd pages), but it is among his most powerful. And through it all, Sharpe marches on. This is a difficult yet valuable book.
Cornwell at his finest.......2005-10-30
All the perfect ingredients for an action-packed and page turning read" as THE TIMES said. This book is for people who like adventures packed with action in the 19th century. This novel is about the time where the battle field was on the sea. Lieutenant Richard Prey an Englishman, is given a mission to stopp war. His adventure is exciting as the plot reaches its climax; Prey has to, protect a women he loves, hunt a traitor and stay alive.
Sharpe in Transition.......2005-08-18
This 18th installment in the Sharpe series is set in 1807, following the events of Sharpe's Trafalgar. The story kicks off in high gear with the cold-blooded murder of British officer in London at the hands of a traitorous fellow officer. Meanwhile, Sharpe is first encountered in a rather comic scene at the offices of a firm that handles the monetary affairs of military men. It comes as some shock to find that he is attempting to sell his battlefield commission in order to leave the army! It seems he is disenchanted with being a quartermaster and is penniless following various nefarious legal actions following the death of his paramour Lady Grace. Fortunately for the continuity of the series, selling a battlefield commission is not permitted (no matter how threatening Sharpe is to the priggish clerks!), and he's stuck in his position for the moment.
Larger events are at work however -- it seems Denmark has built a very nice fleet, which the French want in order to replace their losses at Trafalgar and the British want in order to keep the French from having it. Following a brief episode in which Sharpe revisits the orphanage he was reared in (the most unconvincing part of the book), he is assigned to replace the murdered officer as the bodyguard for the nefarious Captain Lavisser. Lavisser is an aide to the Duke of York who has been charged with a secret mission to take 43,000 guineas and bribe the Danish prince into "storing" his fleet with the British for safekeeping. Alas, he is also a traitor and French agent who is planning on killing Sharpe and making off with the gold.
And so Sharpe is tossed into a James Bond role as he attempts to stay alive, foil Lavisser, and boink the beautiful daughter of Britain's agent in Copenhagen. More suited to the battlefield than intrigue, Sharpe is generally a step or two behind Lavisser until he finally gets to go mano-a-mano with him in the midst of a bombardment. Ah yes... the British bombardment of Copenhagen... one of the earliest deliberate attacks on a civilian population using modern armaments. Not the finest moment for the British fleet, and Cornwell pulls no punches in describing the horror and destruction it wreaked.
On the whole I found the book to be as entertaining and gripping as any in the series. True, there's not as much battlefield action as some might prefer, but there is a well described action in which British regulars rout a rag-tag group of Danish militia. And you have to like the irony of Sharpe being on the wrong end of volley fire for once! There are also little cameos by series regulars Wellesley, Harper, and the first action of the riflemen. There's even the rather shocking scene of Sharpe weeping! All in all, a little bit of a hodge-podge, but one built solidly upon an obscure piece of military which Cornwell once again capably brings to light.
Rolicking Sharpe yarn, completes Sharpe's Background.......2005-03-21
Sharpe's Prey is very different from Sharpe's Trafalger. When Trafalger had ended, Sharpe was united with his love Lady Grace, her husband conveniently shot while attempting to murder her. When Sharpe's Prey opens, Sharpe is wearing his traditional green jacket of the rifles, but our hero is tough to recognize. Grace died from childbirth complications, along with the baby. Sharpe's fortune has once again been eaten up and he is penniless. His commission is worthless and he is not very happy with his military career. Yet Sharpe comes out on top and soon he finds himself in a secret mission with a gentleman to Denmark. After his defeat at Trafalger, Napoleon is desperately looking for ships to use against the naval power of Britain. Denmark's fleet is tempting and the British want that fleet safe in English ports while the Danes disagree. Soon Sharpe is in over his head in a world of spies and double crosses all while the English invade the peninsular kingdom. What follows is a tale of love, revenge and war, culminated by the British bombardment of Copenhaggan a little remembered event in world history. As always Cornwell does a fine job but this time he outshines himself.

The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition (Literary Classics).......2007-09-10
Excellent edition, however I had hoped to receive one with colour plates rather than the black and white plates. This was my only disappointment. The book was luxuriously bound and beautifully put together. All the stories are there, and it is funny how ones memories can play tricks as I thought the description in the story The Tinder Box described one of the dogs as having 'eyes like saucers' when the book texted 'eyes like teacups' or 'eyes like towers'. I am in no position to argue, but the story still remains magical.
Worth having this in any serious book collection, but as the pages are quite fragile I would suggest avoiding letting children having free run of this in case it gets damaged, perhaps until they are at least about 8 with advanced reading capabilities.
Very Nice........2007-06-27
The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition is a very nice book. Of course the fairy tales that we all love are in the book, but the book itself is pretty. I am very happy with it.
A good Book.......2007-03-09
This is a good book, I only wish that the pages were thicker and that the stories were spaced in a more, well, spacious way. the space between the end of one story and the begining of the next is only as big as a few lines. the type is also really small. None of this is really a problem, I understand that if they made the print larger, the spacing between stories larger, and made the pages thicker the book would probably weight 25lbs...and that would make reading it difficult wouldn't it? I am really glad that I got it.
Good quality.......2007-03-07
See my customer images.
The pages have gold-leafed edges, and there is a ribbon bookmark. There is also some metallic on the cover, and the illustrations on the inside are great. I have not read the text (giving it as a gift for a new baby), but the type is easy to read. The paper is of the super-thin Norton Anthology/Bible variety (hence the 4 stars), but anything thicker would make the book large and heavy, so understood. That said, read it to your kids, but don't let them play with it too hard or you'll probably end up with torn pages. The price of this book is great though, for a decent quality hardback that is a full collection.

Alright, you tried living in a commune in the 1970s, and people kept borrowing your toothbrush and leaving dishes in the sink. Then you set up house by yourself and felt lonely. You got married, started raising a family and ended up feeling isolated from your friends and the rest of the community. You go to work, wave to your neighbors over the fence now and then, and think there must be more to life than this. There is: a whole new concept of building a neighborhood and sense of community. This is the story of how and why cohousing works, and how to go about making it happen for yourself.

Cohousing.......2007-06-09
This is an excellent book for the individual who would like to consider living in a community that isn't the typical, isolated neighborhood. Reading this book has really opened my eyes to so many of the benefits of cohousing. Originally I thought that it was like an old-fashioned commune but that's not it at all. Kathryn McCamnat, as well as her architect husband, Chuck Durrett, really know what they're talking about.
Cohousing the Cure?.......2005-01-27
A fabulous book which shows the beauty of the european style intentional community, with many enticing photos. It makes me think that even though it is difficult or impossible to utilize the pragmatic wisdom of traditional socialism on a national scale in the United States due to the misinformation and prejudice which has saturated our culture, it may be possible, practical and quite enjoyable to do it in small, intentional communities. While American culture has become infected with a disingenuous and artificial form of individualism which is the result of fallacious theories of econimics based on the superstition of Natural Law that has done nothing but leave individuals alienated, as well as economically disadvantaged, there have been many great experiments throughout history which provide examples of how a few of us can attempt to get rid of this societal sickness. The community known as New Harmony, founded by the Rappites and purchased by socialist thinker Robert Owen is one such example which was known as the "Athens of the West". There has been a renewed interest in this kind of community since the 1960's and rather than these communities failing like so many other fads, on the contrary, many have succeeded and there are now more than ever. Our society is desperate for a practical answer to it's own lack of connection between people and absence of cultural and generational continuity, whether it, or the individuals living in it are consciously aware of this fact or willing to admit it to themselves. While this book doesn't talk about communities like New Harmony, what the people in this book are doing is very much in that spirit, and I believe it holds the answers to many problems that can be used here and now. What we need now is something which will give us independence from the growing trend of corporate neofeudalism which values profit and underpaying labor over family, friends, real education (not education for money) self-enjoyment, and any hope of meaningful individuality (as opposed to the meaningless ideas of individualism propounded by free-market theories and shallow pseudo-philosophical and political fads like objectivism and libertarianism). I sincerely hope that one day that I can participate in such a community.
good start.......1999-12-30
This book is the perfect place to begin considering if cohousing is for you. Beautifully illustrated it allows the reader to imagine themselves in cohousing. If your ready to make your project happen I recommend THE COHOUSING HANDBOOK by Chris Hanson.
Contemporary Urban Design Opinion Leader.......1999-07-24
How much action can one book trigger? I wonder how many of theprojects can be traced back to readers being inspired by thisbook.
Beautifully illustrated, well researched, the book conveys well the Aha erlebnis these architects must have experienced as they discovered these very liveable Danish communities.
For readers who like architecture and wonder what kind of housing community can deliver homeliness based on both privacy and community.
THE book for anyone interested in cohousing.......1998-12-24
This book has everything: photos, diagrams, plans of action, references, and more. For the beginner, this book defines cohousing & makes it possible to visualize this type of community. For people who already know what cohousing is, this book gives you step-by-step information on how to make a cohousing community a reality.

Comprehensible.......2006-09-25
Written with humor and very concisely. I love the pictures (comics) Donald Palmer did a great job of introducing Kierkegaard and his philosophy to the masses.
Amazingly Accurate and Fun Portrayal for the Beginner.......2006-05-28
Author/illustrator Palmer brings out Kierkegaard's brilliance in a way accessible to all, simply conveying the complexity of Kierkegaard the person and Kierkegaard the writings while providing a continuous laugh fitting for SK's own serio-comic ironic style. Kierkegaard's the epitome of epigrammatic writing and living, a zealous genius misrepresented by both secularist existentialists as well as respected Christian theologians/teachers who wrongly accuse SK of throwing out objective Christian truth, when really SK's subjectivity IS the evangelical truth of personal relationship with God, not mere external religious tradition. As for the comics in this book, they (as is SK) are HILarious, though probably more so because of the Bible allusions. This book contains a glossary and bibliography, and after this SK intro I'd recommend 'The Essential Kierkegaard' by the editors Hong, then skipping 'Concept of Irony' and starting with 'Either/Or' reading thru the rest of SK's books, which from the outset were written on 2 parallel tracks, one being pseudonymous works (from which it is unfair to attribute quotes to SK) and the other being signed works. P.S.--it's ironic that SK is now associated with the existentialist all-about-self-and-living-in-the-moment philosophies when SK lived so dead to self (his name even means 'graveyard') and with vision, methodically poured himself out in a planned series of books so that his readers entrapped in dead state church religiosity might become aware that they're dead and need to get a life (a self).
Digestible Kierkegaard for Postmodern People.......2006-02-16
Few initially realize that the aesthetic slug which Kierkegaard often decried was he himself. Kierkegaard stuggled with determining, or rather willing, who he would be as a man in books like Either/Or. All of this is what makes him so relevant for postmoderns, existentialism students and even for card-carrying religionists.
The format of the For Beginners series is very inviting and helps make the subject matter less daunting and far from boring, which is the point, and a good reason to use this series' versions whenever getting to know a thinker for the first time. You will get a broad overview of the person's career without getting bogged down too quickly in any one particular life phase. Once you see what it is you appreciate in the career timeline, you can more easily zero in on that selection of books and go from there.
Kierkegaard For Beginners covers the Either/Or argument, the felial Abraham sacrifice delimma and explores Soren's own Christian commitment in a way that will charm and attract even nonchristians as it did me. His inspired figure of the "Knight of Faith" is a fascinating hook and resolves his existentialist concerns heroically.
At the bottom of his writing is the need to account for and deal productively with the bitter anxiety bedrock of the human psyche, and how to resolve that energy and bring it into a sort of freeing self-affirmation by resolving one's will on the issues on which it brings anxiety to bear (thus the "Either/Or" theme elsewhere in title by same name). The comical critique of this is "which breakfast cereal ought I to eat today?!" but the practical application is more in line with "should I renounce playing bridge with the back-stabbing cretins at the moose lodge and take up philosophy/working with kids/see Tibet.") The concern is on changing those things that make one anxious so that they no longer cause anxiety. This said, there is a positive spin on anxiety as the doorbell that "God" rings when he is ready to visit. The feeling of dread, thus, is the threshold over which one comes into contact again with the Divine or whatever makes your life unquestionably, profoundly worthwhile.
This book, as typically the series does, makes the full nature of the life and work roughly, excitingly intelligible in the space of about an hour. No small feat. Definite MUST for Kierkegaard beginners.
Profound Book with Funny Illustrations.......2004-12-29
I don't consider this a comic because the content is too profound to be called a comic. If you understand the content of this book well, the illustrations make you laugh heartily. I find them entertaining.
I would have never understood what Kierkegaard's work is all about if I didn't start with this book because Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is said to have used more ink than anyone on Earth, having written more than what an average person can read in one lifetime. I would have understood nothing if I had to read several of his major books and try to figure out what they are all about. The author did a great job in summarizing his philosophy.
Though Christianity pervades his work, I do not think his philosophy is about Christianity. Instead I would say that he established a universal philosophy by using concepts of Christianity. In other words, his philosophy can be applied to any area of life in any culture.
One can spend money on a book and let that book sit somewhere, but this type of book becomes valuable when digested with effort. It becomes something money cannot buy.
Didn't Sartre Get his Own Book in this Series?.......2004-09-20
This is a serviceable introduction to the writings and life of Soren Kierkegaard (SK). It hits several of his major works and emphases and does a pretty good job unpacking some difficult concepts (dread, despair, irony etc..). Palmer falls into a common trap, however, of interpreting SK through the lens of the twentieth century existentialists that utilize him. There was a point in the text where I had serious questions whether he had quoted Sartre more than SK himself (it is of note that Palmer also wrote Sartre for Beginners). This leads at times to anachronism in Palmer's presentation and less than full treatment of those ideas that were important to SK but dismissed by those who followed (namely passionate, ironic and devotional theological prose). The illustrations were typical of what I have come to expect from this series: helpful aids for visual learners, occasionally comical (there is a great one on Woody Allen's take on the intro to Sickness Unto Death), but usually a little disappointing, particularly considering the vast reservoir of ironic and comical material availed by SK's sharp wit and various pseudonyms.

Kierkegaard: A Biography traces the evolution of a character who himself was made up of many characters of his own creation. Søren Kierkegaard's writings, published under various pseudonyms, were made in response to "collisions" with significant individuals (including his father, his brother, a fiancé whom he rejected, and a prominent Danish bishop). The development of these pseudonymous characters reflect Kierkegaard's growing sense of self, and his discovery of that self as being essentially religious. With considerable mastery of the political, philosophical, and theological conflicts of 19th century Europe, Alastair Hannay's biography also serves as an excellent introduction to Kierkegaard's philosophy and faith. From sentence to sentence, the book is full of small pleasures, particularly Hannay's judiciously employed, humanizing vernacular phrases. (As a young man, "Søren," like so many people, "blamed his father for messing up his life.") And like his subject, Hannay is a shrewd observer of the often-misleading relationship between appearance and reality. For instance, he suggests that "it does seem plausible to suppose that a main motivation behind the huge effort that writers put into their poetic products stems often from a sense of lacking in themselves the very substance that their works appear to convey." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Written by one of the world's preeminent authorities on Kierkegard, this biography is the first to reveal the delicate imbrication of Kierkegard's life and thought. To grasp the importance and influence of Kierkegaard's thought far beyond his native Denmark, it is necessary to trace the many factors that led this gifted but (according to his headmaster) 'exceedingly childish youth' to grapple with traditional philosophical problems and religious themes in a way that later generations would recognize as amounting to a philosophical revolution. Although Kierkegaard's works are widely tapped and cited they are seldom placed in context. Nor is due attention placed to their chronology. However, perhaps more than the work of any other contributor to the Western philosophical tradition, these writings are so closely meshed with the background and details of the author's life that knowledge of this is indispensible to their content. Alastair Hannay solves these problems by following the chronological sequence of events and focusing on the formative stages of his career from the success of his first, pseudonymous work ^Either/Or through to The Sickness Unto Death and Practice in Christianity. This book offers a powerful narrative account which will be of particular interest to philosophers, literary theorists, intellectual historians, and scholars of religious studies as well as any non-specialist looking for an authoritative guide to the life and work of one of the most original and fascinating figures in Western philosophy. Alastair Hannay is Professor Emeritus in the department of philosophy at the University of Oslo. He is the co-editor of The Cambridge Companion of Kierkegaard (1998) and is also translator of several works by Kierkegaard in Penguin Classics.

Excellent biography.......2005-04-09
Well written, comprehensive and compelling reading.
It's a little overly technical in places (although this may suit some readers). It also seems to focus a little to much on Kierkegaard's early works- the chapters on his later works e.g. Practice in Christianity, Sickness... and that part of his life feel somewhat more compressed than earlier ones (perhaps it's actually a case of the earlier chapters being too long?)
If you are new to Kierkegaard I would suggest reading Penguin's edition of Kierkegaard's Paper and Journals (edited by Alistair Hannay) first, and then this biography.

Angelica's review.......2007-08-26
Boot Camp helped me a lot in preparing for the SATS. I've had a bunch of books and prep guides in the past, but none of them were specific in reviewing what was actually on the SATS. Instead of giving you techniques in enduring the SATS, Boot Camp actually helps you practice and prepare with examples so that when you actually see the real thing, you're not suprised. I saw questions and problems that I went over in Boot Camp and it helped me raise my score by 200 points. I would recommend it to anyone whose serious about doing well on the SAT.
Great help for preparing and practicing for the SATs.......2007-07-06
My son just finished working with this book in order to prepare for the SAT. He is the third of my children to use it. He earned a perfect score, increasing his total score by 310 points. He is now very ready to apply to college. The book is a no-nonsense, clear guide for the steps students need to take in order to do well on the test. I highly recommend it! Maria
Get this book...it is great!.......2007-05-13
This book really improved my SAT scores. My SAT scores were not the best, but my grades were pretty good. I was worried about not being accepted to colleges because of my low SAT scores. I read this book, along with taking practice SATs, and my scores improved a lot. I tried to read the book at least ten minutes a night. Repetition is the key. Just do the practice worksheets more than once. That helped me a lot. Because of this book and the class, I got into all the colleges I applied to! I highly recomend getting this book...it is great!
A reader from Dubai.......2007-04-22
As an international student from Dubai, it is not easy to study for a test that is actually made to evaluate American students. The only choice I had to go to a top school was to take the SAT. I have taken a course at Kaplan, and I realized that I was way behind. The material was too much for me. The vocabulary was too complicated and its sentences just didn't make any sense, because it seemed like it was not related to the definition. The math was also misleading. Even though the material was intense and confusing, I have blamed myself, because I thought that it was just the language barrier. Well, later on I decided to get a private tutor from Kaplan, and I paid a lot. When I finished taking all the private classes, I realized that I have wasted my money for nothing. In addition to that, I have taken the private session twice at Kaplan, and the results were the same, just a little improvement. Few months later, I have decided to go for Princeton Review, and I have taken the classes. I was pleased with book, but it was still difficult for me, and my scores did not improve a lot. At the end of the course I decided to have private sessions, and it wasn't very good, because we went over the same thing. Two weeks after my session ended, I went to one of my teachers, and told her my situation; she recommended me to buy the Boot Camp book. I searched the book online and I have the book with me now, and let's just say that my scores are sky rocketing!! Really..
I feel bad for not knowing about this book earlier, because the vocabulary is straight to the point, and the math is so simple to understand. Ms. Manning did a great job with this book.
I really recommend you to buy this book as soon as possible, so you can succeed with your SAT and get a perfect score or something close to 2400. In addition to success in the SAT, this book will help you with your placement tests before entering the college, and will be a great reference in the future.
Got 208 on PSAT and 2150 First Time taking SAT.......2007-04-09
Great book, especially the latin roots, but you have to actually do them :) The author, Marcy Manning, also offers a course in the DC/VA area which I attended. We also visited all the DC museums and had a little family vacation while there. I think this course and book helped me get these high scores. I got 740 on Math and consistently get that on all the practice tests now. Great book. Great class.

Destined to be a Collectors Item.......2001-04-09
A superb collection of nine favorite H.C.A. stories (see below), wonderously illustrated with something like a hundred hig-quality reproductions, at least half of which are full-page, drawn from the work of twenty of the greatest artists from the "Golden Age" of children's book illustration (around the turn of the century). The art is simply mind-blowingly beautiful.
The tellings themselves are very fine. The language used is both delightful and sophisticated, making this a fine volume to entertain good readers amongst older children, and to expand their language skills. Of course, less able readers and younger children might like the stories just as well if they were read to them. There is no information in the book or on the publishers website regarding the origins of these particular tellings.
A sample paragraph, from "Thumbelina":
"Then they came to the warm lands. The sun was shining much more brightly, the sky was twice as high, and the most wonderful green and black grapes were growing by the roadside and on fences. Lemons and oranges hung in the forests, and there was a scent of myrtle and curled mint, and pretty children were running by the roadside playing with big colorful butterflies. But the swallow flew still further, and everything became even more beautiful. There, beneath magnificent green trees by a blue lake, stood a shining white palace, with vines climbing up it's lofty pillars. At the top were lots of swallows' nests, and the swallow carrying Thumbelina lived in one of them."
This collection contains the following stories:
The Emperor's New Clothes The Little Mermaid The Little Match Girl The Nightingale The Princess and the Pea The Steadfast Tin Soldier Thumbelina The Tinderbox The Ugly Duckling
The compilers, Russell Ash and Bernard Higton, must be very proud of the beautiful object they have produced. The publisher, Cronicle Books, deserves praise and support.
This book is a must, either for the child's library or the collectors shelf.
