A bit dissapointed that there was very little targeted toward Retail, specifically lacking in the areas of shopping center and out parcel development... but the formulas were interesting, and the concepts that were explained... were done so in great detail.
Extremely valuable tool.......2002-10-07
"Land Development Calculations" provides an excellent and innovative strategy for working towards sustainable land use and development. The models for varying land development strategies can assist local government land use decision makers and planners as well as developers determine the carrying capacity of land within realistic thresholds. The accompanying spreadsheets for the development scenarios on the CD-ROM are extremely user friendly and do not place an undue burden on the user by requiring what may be hard to find or to collect data. All of the data required just is typical of what is necessary to make appropriate land development decisions. As a local government planner, I am working towards incorporating the information received from the models in to the zoning and development code as part of the approval process by using it to further assess suitability of the property for the purposes proposed (a zoning consideration required in accordance with the State of Georgia Zoning Procedures Act). I strongly encourage other land planners and developers to read "Land Development Calculations," because of its highly practical and very timely material.
Author Delivers Valuable Techniques and Tools.......2001-10-18
This is a terrificaly valuable technical reference for practitioners who need an efficient method of performing land development calulations. The book and its companion set of spreadsheets enable users to answer two key questions: 1) how much can be built on a given piece of land; or 2) how much land is needed to accommodate a given use? The material is clearly written and well illustrated, especially a series of worksheets leading through the method. Another strength is its comprehensiveness and detail, including all major land-use and micro site conditions.

Using LISREL for Structural Equation Modeling is for researchers and graduate students in the social sciences who require structural equation modeling techniques to answer substantive research questions. Author E. Kevin Kelloway provides an overview of structural equation modeling including the theory and logic of structural equation models (SEMs), assessing the "fit" of SEMs to the data, and implementation of SEMs in the LISREL environment. Specific applications of SEMs are considered including confirmatory factor analysis, observed variable path analysis, and latent variable path analysis. A sample application including the source code, printout, and results section is presented for each type of analysis. Good but intorductory overview.......2001-05-16
This is a good beginner's guide to SEM and LISREL. The author explains the concepts in a very understandable manner. Although I bought this book two years back, I still refer back to it occasionally. I would highly recommend this to someone who is just starting out with SEM. But more advanced users will be a little disappointed because it stops at the basics. Two notes of warning are in order: (1) this book does NOT discuss the visual interface that LISREL now has, and (2) SPSS now supports AMOS and has dropped LISREL support.
Not just about LISREL.......1999-05-25
In teaching structural equation modeling in a doctoral-level graduate class, I found Kelloway's book one of the most useful resources. Despite its title, the book is not only about LISREL. The initial chapters provide an excellent overview of the science (and art) of structural equation modeling. Kelloway provides probably a better summary than most other books on the topic.
A worthy guide to non-specialists.......1999-02-20
If your goal is to use LISREL and apply structural equation modeling to your own work, this is the book for you. Goes over the model and the software in enough detail to handle most of the problems my stats students see, and is clearly written and easy to follow.

Models, Methods, Concepts and Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy
Process is a volume dedicated to selected applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) focused on three themes: economics, the social sciences, and the linking of measurement with human values. (1) The AHP offers economists a substantially different approach to dealing with economic problems through ratio scales. The main mathematical models on which economics has based its quantitative thinking up to now are utility theory, which uses interval scales, and linear programming. We hope that the variety of examples included here can perhaps stimulate researchers in economics to try applying this new approach. (2) The second theme is concerned with the social sciences. The AHP offers psychologists and political scientists the methodology to quantify and derive measurements for intangibles. We hope that the examples included in this book will encourage them to examine the methods of AHP in terms of the problems they seek to solve. (3) The third theme is concerned with providing people in the physical and engineering sciences with a quantitative method to link hard measurement to human values. In such a process one needs to interpret what the measurements mean. A number is useless until someone understands what it means. It can have different meanings in different problems. Ten dollars are plenty to satisfy one's hunger but are useless by themselves in buying a new car. Such measurements are only indicators of the state of a system, but do not relate to the values of the human observers of that system. AHP methods can help resolve the conflicts between hard measurement data and human values.

Jargon, puffery and false pretenses.......2007-03-16
This book is not at all what its title and blurb suggest. It purports to help you to assess strategic alliances by using "metrics", which are defined as "that which should be measured" (at xi). Unfortunately, the author has a distinctly inadequate approach to this concept: she will tell you that you should use something as a "metric", but she does NOT tell you (i) how to measure it, or (ii) how to weight it against other "metrics" that are qualitatively different. If you are expecting the book to provide even a single template or checklist that will enable you to accumulate a bunch of metrics and compare them -- in fact, if you're expecting anything quantitative at all -- yours is a vain hope.
Moreover, the metrics she proposes are often quite vague. For example, she proposes "strategic alignment" and "strategy fit" as two separate metrics during the development of an alliance (at 43-49). The distinction between them is never made clear, although for the latter she includes a kind of flow diagram with 12 boxes filled with terminology like "Misson/Vison/Values", "SWOT", "Product Lines" etc., and other chestnuts from undergraduate business textbooks. Here are some other examples of metrics, verbatim (at 214): "Define expectations and success continually", "Educate the customer about [your company's] value," "Negotiation - change the conversation from how much to how good". Maybe these are good bits of advice in some contexts, but the use of the word "metric" for each of them is quite misleading.
The "case studies" that make up most of the book are no more illuminating about the nuts and bolts of implementing a measurement process. They consist mainly of the authors's big-company clients patting themselves on the back while describing the things that were important to them in various deals, without describing any process for scoring or comparing these factors.
The author does take great pains, however, to remind us that, e.g., she once did some research at Cal Tech, that her current firm (into which her old firm merged) is "considered the world experts in Negotiation and Relationship Management processes" (at 57), and that she wrote another book (which you are encouraged to buy and read). This constant huckstering is tiresome. So is the prose style. It's an endless permutation of empty business-speak like "leadership", hand-off," competency" and "critical", e.g., "leadership is critical at this stage" (as if it isn't at other stages?), or the non sequitur: "The operationalization metrics, a cumbersome term, relates [sic] to the multitude of activities that put flesh around the skeleton of the alliance. This is also the moment of alliance hand-off from those who developed and negotiated the alliance to those who must implement it [at 63]."
If you can tolerate soporific prose about alliances, you would be much better off reading Mark De Rond's "Strategic Alliances as Social Facts". In addition to critiquing the "life cycle" model of alliances on which Segil relies, it offers a great deal of substance -- including a convincing argument that the success or failure of alliances often is based on factors the parties didn't initially expect to measure.
A must-read for anyone who is in a business relationship.......2004-01-07
Segil's expertise shines through in this book about the role metrics play in creating successful business relationships. Segil's use of real-world examples shows how the unpredictable, complicated realities of alliances can be overcome and managed by applying the right metrics. With her keen insights and first-hand experiences, readers finish the book armed with the tools and direction they need to use alliances to their advantage. A great book!

GEODESIC MATH AND HOW TO USE IT, excellent reference book..........2005-09-29
Seemed over-technical at 1st, but after about a year has been my reference book on geodesics & making all kinds of geodesic domes... It lists chord factors (lengths of segments before applying radius of dome) on tables to 7 decimals for various domes @ the end of the book if you don't want do calculate w/formulas provided. If your familiar with trigonometry, it will let you jump around chapters that are of more interest.
This book was originally copyrighted in 1976, but not edited for this 2nd paperback 2003 Edition (glossy color cover). The author, Hugh Kenner (1923-2003), has compiled a very thorough book. Very well written & explained in orderly fashion with excellent general layout & (especially for the time) detailed diagrams plus cross page-references. IMO there is very little that I would change except for replacing current diagrams with modern CAD generated illustrations, that's about it.
Has 172 pages with several blank pages for notes (I note in the wide margins instead) & is 8.7 x 8.7 x 0.5 inches. Not a small book but not a big bulky one either. Makes for a lot of information handy to store just about anywhere...

I found many formulas & shortcuts throughout the book. From Chapter 12 I plotted a 16 frequency (# of divisions making total # of triangles) icosahedron (the typical geodesic polyhedron shape) dome with 3880 chords or "struts". Even made them into arcs for a perfectly round sphere. Chapter 12 has "Using the Tables" with a simple symmetric triangle xyz-grid on a spreadsheet. Each chord calculated does not rely on another chord's result, so chance of error is greatly reduced. Chapter 14 "Truncations" has "Truncation by Rotation", which saves time on calculating the rest of the chords in dome, or moving chords by their symmetry.
This "still nicely" bound book after a lot of use covers tension & tensegrities, subdivisions, great circles, symmetry & breakdowns, choosing a polyhedron, spherical coordinate system, ellipses & superellipses, truncations, space frames & many kinds of angles - plus charts & other resources @ the end.
A free program on the web called Windome is useful to 8 decimals, but lacks input parameters like radius... So I use it to verify chord factors. From 2-16v involving about 12,240 chords plotting all verified (to 15 digits) on 1st try. Besides spreadsheets, formulas can be used in programming like "The R Project", formulas & programs are also written for old Hewlett-Packard HP-35, 21 & 45 series calculators & programs filed with the HP-65 library (circa mid-1970's). I guess it also goes to show Hewlett-Packard has a history in the PC & hardware programming business...
One thing - spherical coordinate symbols for Theta & Phi are switched, though referenced in correct order (check Mathworld). Easy to correct, just read "Phi symbol" as Theta & "Theta symbol" as Phi - references & formulas will be in order. This book was written in mid-1970's, guess more? people then used this as convention.

There are many good free sources on the web for geodesic domes & math plotting through Cartesian x,y,z and/or spherical Theta, Phi coordinates using basic trigonometry. This book cost me $13.57 shipped free brand new & is WELL worth it, even after searching the web...
A final word of caution on building materials for domes in general: if you use wood make sure you take extra fireproofing precautions, unless it's a temporary frame. 2 domes here in town (on same lot) burnt down before fire department got to them - and they were right down the street! The intense heat from both fires left nothing except the slab & melted everything.
So, when they start to burn there is very little time to exit the structure. As energy efficient as they are, the same design allows for a very efficient combustion, especially with wood stud frames & panels. Other problems arise as well with ventilating interior wood frames to help prevent condensation.
There are many other materials that will not burn that could make up the panels (like from American Ingenuity, Inc.), or even a monolithic concrete pour over a temporary plastic covered geodesic wood frame. Another method that doesn't use geodesics is a "monolithic shotcreted airform dome" (from a company called Monolithic Dome Institute).

The subject very well presented and in a way that is easy to understand. Gives the underlying math to be able to use our modern computers setting on our desk tops to go far beyond what one person could do 25 years ago.

Well, the time has come for the pirates to take a hike. UC Press is reprinting this book. The information I have indicates both hard and softcover bindings...It will be available this year (2003).
Geodesic Math and How To Use It is an extremely well written book, and with the NASA papers, forms the "canon of applied geodesic math." It is a great book, well written and useful.

I have been researching geodesics for a while and have found this book valuable in understanding the subject, however, I would suggest downloading some of the NASA tech briefs about geodesic math (and its free) before spending this amount of money on a book. There are several online sources of info to help the novice.

Hugh Kenner's book is the bible of geodesy. While other books provide you with tables and some of the rudiments of the theory of geodesic domes, 'Geodesic Math and How to Use it' gives you a first-principle look at how domes are developed from a mathematical/geometrical point of view. Most importantly, Kenner introduces the reader to a novel metric for both describing the location of geodesic points in space and calculating their exact positions, so you can develop your own chord factors rather than relying on tables without understanding the underlying math.

Wow! I can't beleive it. Dr. Vanderschraaf really gets your attention and never lets go throughout the entire book. What a page turner!! I just know that I won't be able to just read this one just once. It's really amazing, and you won't believe the ending! I don't want to spoil it, but be prepared for a major surprise. Kudos to this fine author! He really takes the subject and delivers it to the common reader. Great read!
