1 out of 5 stars Essentials of Health Care Finance.......2007-09-10

This is a very difficult book to digest if you are not familiar with accounting concepts. This is not a beginner text! The text is written in a very broad context, however, the expectation in my class was to apply the broad concepts to detailed financial problems. This was difficult because Cleverly offerred few examples to help apply the difficult financial concepts. I found the text to be utterly frustrating!

I bought the book of Essentials of Health Care Finance, it was delivered on time, however, some papers insided the book are very dirty, I can see the brown oily figure prints. I wish that I can exchange the book ...

4 out of 5 stars Troubling Guide to Alien Territory.......2001-08-23

This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person. It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person. Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts. It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models.

This reader studied Cleverly's text as a requirement for a healthcare finance class. The text was frustrating as this reader attempted to "know" everything about healthcare finances; however, this is probably not the intent of the book. It does present a road into the foreign land of finances. It demands respect for another set of data and another language for interpreting that data. One does not master this data set at one pass, however.

Nevertheless, this reader did gain some new financial information. At the risk of being simplistic, but communicative; a listing of some of the concepts learned follows:

1. There are many users of financial information.

2. Financial information can guide the formation of programs.

3. Financial management is essential for successful healthcare organizations.

4. Various qualities of health care organization types.

5. How health care organizations make up for discouting and bad debt and capitated payments.

6. General principles of accounting and why they are important. Also that these principles still need to be explained, to be consistent, and to be clarified.

7. Overview of four main types of financial statements with a brief explanation of vaious line items.

8. That financial planning includes considering inflation before it happens, and for equipment etc. to break and wear out before it breaks or wears out.

9. That financial information can be better understood by comparing financial ratios of different line items and trends over time. There are national benchmarking ratios available and Cleverly gives some and tells how to get more.

10. That financial planning should be an orderly process in an organization.

11. There are different types of costs. Some stay the same, some are overhead types. Some are direct, some are hidden. Some can be controlled, some cannot.

12. Figuring out prices is a very complex process in healthcare. It is based on costs and payers. It must also include indirect costs and costs of future problems.

13. There is still stuff to learn . . . And this reader is still no expert.

Finally, after this MSN course and this text, this reader is more conversant with the financial landscape. It holds interest and it is understandable, after all.

2 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2000-01-08

I have finished about 5 different chapters for a Masters degree course I am taking. This book is not for beginners! I am an RN and have been working in business for 10 years. The author assumes that you have had basic accounting and the terminology is unfamiliar. There are very few examples given so it is hard to take the information and see how it is really used. I have had to buy another book just so that I could understand this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Cleverley is the guru of healthcare finance.......1999-08-27

This book represents the foundation on which all healthcare organizations should examine their financial strength and management. While not for beginners, it provides a comprehensive overview of reporting and benchmarks that prove invaluable during the budgeting process and for financial control.

1 out of 5 stars Missing the workbook and now I can't use it.......2007-09-22

The ad doesn't tell you that you need a workbook to be able to use this book. You can't even get through page 1 without having the workbook. Now I need it and can't find it anywhere. Bummed I spent so much money on it without having the entire set.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for a self-paced or crash course in introductory accounting.......2007-09-13

Most of the other reviewers who have given this book 5 stars have it right. I first heard of this book by doing a Google search for the syllabi of accounting courses. This book appeared on the syllabus for an introductory acccounting course for the MBA program at Columbia University. I think the description of the course said that its purpose was to teach accounting to students with non-finance backgrounds (paraphrasing). That's what I needed so I became interested in the book. I read the other reviews on Amazon and bought the book. From my experience, the 5-star reviewers turned out to be right.

This book is an introductory level accounting workbook (as opposed to a textbook). It teaches you accounting through exercises like fill-in-the-blanks. That might sound like grammar school, but that's the point. The book's title is exactly what you will get, the essentials of accounting, without all of the minutiae that make other books hundreds of pages long. And you will be prepared enough to follow along during the first few weeks of an introductory MBA course.

Nevertheless, if you already understand accounting and want to get into financial analysis (ie, valuation, forecasting, etc...), you're going to need a completely different book. I used two when I first started out: 1- Analysis for Financial Managment by Robert Higgins and 2- Finance for Managers by the Harvard Business Press.

5 out of 5 stars great book- beware used copies though!.......2007-08-09

Like most of the other reviewers, I have found this book an excellent, easy to use and clear introduction to accounting. I am studying for the CFA and needed an orientation to balance sheets as I dont have an accounting background.

Other reviewers have mentioned the "workbook" format- I want to clearly point out that buying a used copy that has been marked by someone else may defeat the point! This isn't an ordinary textbook, it drills the points home by having the reader fill in blanks on every page. I was annoyed to buy a new copy at full price as I always bought college textbooks used, but am now glad I did. If you genuinely need to really understand these concepts, the "filling in" does help retain information. Also there are mentions of a "separate booklet" involving exhibits and practice tests, but in the 9th edition at least, everything is included in the one book so Im assuming it was previous editions that came with a separate section.

4 out of 5 stars Great overall view of accounting.......2007-05-28

This book is in workbook format which surprised me since I was expecting a textbook. I questioned whether the workbook format would help me when I have practically zero background in accounting but the format actually ended up teaching me more by forcing me to be interactive. Accounting isn't the most exciting field but this book makes it (almost) fun to learn. Would highly recommend this book for anyone needing to learn basic accounting.

5 out of 5 stars after 25 years ... still useful & understandable, still THE BEST.......2007-01-06

I have used this book for over 25 years in teaching everyone from receptionists to financial professionals how "speak" accounting. I have not found a better resource than this book.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Overview.......2006-02-28

The title says it all--this is a good basic overview of payroll. You will not become an expert by reading it, but what can you read that makes you an expert? This book will give you the vocabulary and the tools you need to take your first steps in payroll. After that experience is the best teacher.

3 out of 5 stars Valuable Payroll Resource.......2004-01-04

I think this is a good beginner-to-intermediate level book about payroll. While I doubt this book can serve as your only source to setting up a payroll system (a claim never made by the author), it can serve as a valuable guide to implementing or reviewing your current payroll internal controls, best practices and payroll policy manual. It may also help you analyze whether you are paying too much money or spending too much time on your job costing system. If you like examples, the author uses many short case studies to clarify his main points.

He keeps the book up-to-date by discussing topics such as payroll information technology, current payment alternatives and Internet references. He discusses other issues in detail, such as fringe benefits, vacation pay, minimum wage laws, payroll calculations, retirement plans, and stock option plans.

Given the popularity of outsourcing the payroll function, I think the book could have went into more detail about how to select the right payroll outsource vendor and how to ensure that the outsource vendor maintains proper internal controls (e.g. obtaining an annual SAS 70 Type II). Also, I felt I could have skipped the payroll tax portion and read IRS publication 15, 15a and 15b and my state's corresponding payroll tax publication. Finally, to help improve the books longevity, the author could have either left out the current year tax rates and limitations altogether or listed Internet references where the current and future rates and limitations could be referenced.

Nevertheless, overall I think this is a good book that I will use from time to time to brush up on my payroll process knowledge. Therefore, I think the book is worth buying, reading and referencing.

      Book Description

There are over half a million high-net-worth individuals in the United States. Already 5 percent of them have private foundations, and interest in setting up charitable organizations is on the rise--due to the estate and tax-planning advantages offered by foundations and the growing desire of many to give back to the community. Creating a Private Foundation is a straightforward and authoritative guide for individuals and families looking at the pluses and minuses of creating a foundation, as well as for the advisers who serve these high-net-worth clients. It explains the reasons for establishing a foundation, the steps for setting one up, and tips for avoiding common pitfalls. Author Roger Silk covers the ins and outs of private foundations from the perspective of both philanthropists and the professionals who work with them.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars private foundation fundamentals.......2006-03-09

The book is more for donors than advisors. I does not provide enough of the necessary essential legally technical information.

      5 out of 5 stars Useful Primer.......2003-11-01

Unwitting new philantrophists sometimes end up with bureaucratic creatures that do exactly what the donor did not want. This book is full of practical advice on how to avoid unpleasant surprises if you set up a foundation of your own, such as finding out that you have no control over its activities.

It also gives a succinct review of investment problems. Foundations can potentially last for many generations. But they can easily mismanage themselves into oblivion in short order. The authors identify seven deadly investment sins.

For example, foundations don't need to frequently redeem their investments, but some mistakenly invest in liquid assets and lose returns as a result. They would be better off with non-traditional investments like private-equity, income producing real estate, hedge funds, and timber.

Many foundations fail to diversify, unwittingly taking on risk. THey start with stock from the founder's company and continue to hold a concentrated position, exposing themselves to the vagaries of that business. In 2002 the David and Lucille Packard Foundation was forced to cut its donations drastically when Hewlett-Packard stock fell.

IN short, an easy-to-read, useful guide.

5 out of 5 stars Creating Private Foundation.......2003-06-16

A great great book to give to your existing Private Foundation clients, as well as those considering their options. The book hits on several key points among many others - which are the reason to formalize your investment policy statement(IPS) and donor intent issues. The author is correct that too often good intentions fail to result in effective results. It deals with other vehicles like charitable lead trusts (CLTs) and charitable remainder trusts (CRTs) as well as donor advised and support organizations. It is a big picture book not a technical how to for the attorney!

      Book Description

What works, why it works, and how to evaluate a shared services program
Shared services, a form of "internal outsourcing," enables corporations to achieve economies of scale by creating a separate entity within the company to perform specific internal services, such as payroll, accounts payable, travel and expense processing, etc. Essentials of Shared Services provides a quick, concise overview of shared services fundamentals, bringing senior-level executives up to speed so that they make the right decision. Bryan Bergeron provides a foundation of shared services from a historical, economic, technical, and customer perspective, showing how shared services can impact a corporation's bottom line, both long and short term. He delivers specific recommendations that can be used to establish and manage a shared services effort and includes a variety of examples of programs that work and those that do not.

2 out of 5 stars More of a Primer than a guide on How-To.......2006-05-14

Based on the editorial reviews I had high hopes for this book. However it is more of a primer discussing some of the issues that surround the topic of shared services than how-to. The really tough decisions involving shared services are how to evaluate the potential programs to take on, how to integrate and manage the portfolio across the functional silos (i.e., finance, HR, real estate, supply chain, and IT), how to govern the shared services organization, and how to balance customer satisfaction with cost efficiencies. Unfortunately this book is not helpful in dealing with these issues.

So if you are a newbie trying to find out what shared services is all about you may find this book helpful. But if you are a manager who has been charged with implimenting a shared services function, there isn't much help here.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview of business models.......2003-11-07

I'm an MBA student and picked up this book to learn more about shared services. Turns out there's a lot to know. But what I came away with was a better appreciation for the varioius business models out there. The book does a good job of comparing and contrasting the various centralized and decentralized ways of conducting business in corporate america, using real-world companies as examples. In short, I was pleasantly surprised. It'll stay on my bookshelf.

        Book Description

Outside of the accounting and finance departments, not many business people are interested in the finer points of financial reports. But every manager must have a thorough understanding of what their finance and accounting staffs do, why they do it, and what these reports really mean.

This indispensable book demystifies the role that accounting and finance play in a corporation and demonstrates how financial decisions are manifestations of company goals. The author's crystal-clear examples show how managers can connect corporate financial information directly to their own strategies and actions. To demonstrate these connections, the author covers such essential topics as:

        * Balance sheets and income/cash flow statements * Reading and understanding annual reports * Fixed-cost and variable-cost issues * Financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting.

If you are looking for a book to introduce you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text," search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. If you have never had this stuff 'splained' to you before, you will like it. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well.
