Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars EasyScript Express.......2006-11-03

As an attorney with no formal training in shorthand, I found the EasyScript Express book very intuitive and helpful in my daily practice. Reading a chapter a day I was able to focus on learning just a few new concepts each day and implementing them right away. This is a much simpler process than the formal shorthand method, and for that, I am grateful.

1 out of 5 stars Decent system, but poorly presented, overpriced.......2006-03-31

The Good:

The EasyScript (ES) speedwriting system does NOT require cursive writing--so all of us hand printers out there can easily use it.

It is also a forward-moving speedwriting system, you write and move on--no constantly going backwards to underline letters or place tick marks, as is done with some other speedwriting systems.

You can use it on your computer or PDA.

Fairly easy to learn, and the rules are clear enough that compared to other systems, you can still transcribe your notes after a longer period of time has passed than you can with other speedwriting/shorthand systems.

The Bad:

Almost half of the book consists of empty note-taking pages. Worse, they are on the LEFT side, which, considering that the majority of people are RIGHT-handed, is not conducive to most people actually using the book as a workbook.

There are some typographical errors and omissions in the book--one glaring one is using a symbol that looks like a large backwards "6" to indicate "Paragraph" on page 59--where this key is on the keyboard, I have no idea.

The included dictionary is not of much use, since with their system you truly can figure out how to abbreviate any word--what would have been much more useful is a dictionary of general brief forms (not necessarily business-related either) for you to memorize.

As to the method itself, if this is your first try at speedwriting, you could do a lot worse. If, on the other hand, you have any previous experience with another letter-based speedwriting system you will probably want to tweak the ES system and/or combine it with abbreviations you're already using if some of the ES concepts don't make sense to you.

Bottom line: Decent system. The book is 'way overpriced (even at the Amazon price), considering how little actual content/instruction is in the book, so go in with a friend or buy used.

3 out of 5 stars Nice system, acceptable book.......2004-07-02

The system itself seems to be a good one, and EasyScript Express an acceptably effective way to learn it.

Here's how the book is broken down:
5pp Introduction
8pp Lesson 1: Simple words
7pp Lesson 2: Prefix words
10pp Lesson 3: Suffix words
11pp Lesson 4: Prefix/Suffix words
6pp Lesson 5: Compound words
2pp Easyscript Overview
2pp Adapting to EasyScript
8pp Answers to the exercises
45pp EasyScript Dictionary

The remaining 60 of the total 164 pages (most of the left-hand pages of all the chapters) are lined "notes" pages presumably for the student to practice in, leaving 104pp total of actual content. Of the content, at least 50% is lists of vocabulary for the learner to transcribe into EasyScript.

This would be a fine basic workbook for a class taught by an instructor that was available to explain things to you. As a self-training book it's rather lean. Ideally I'd want an introductory book like this to have perhaps triple the content (At least fill in those "Notes" pages). I'd want a lot more explanation of the reasoning behind the design, some anecdotes and examples of what people have been using ES for in their lives, examples that show it being used for something other than dictated business letters...something to "humanize" it a bit more.

I'd also like the opportunity to review previously-learned rules, and a lot more opportunity to familiarize myself with it by reading EasyScript text, not just writing isolated words. There are seven brief business-letter transcription exercises, but that's not enough. There's little EasyScript text available on the web (and basically nothing but generic PR stuff available on the official website), so after this brief overview of the basics, my only opportunity to practice is going to be to write something out myself, hope I'm doing it more or less correctly, and practice on that.

Basically the feel of this book was "Okay, we got a couple of hours. Here are the rules, here's a list of words to practice on, now go out and use it, good luck." After going through all the exercises I kind of vaguely know the basics, but I want more. Preferably without paying a hundred dollars...

5 out of 5 stars It's been a blessing.......2002-01-04

I had a need for a "fast-to-paper" method of verbal communications. I have been using Easy Script for several months now, after having received and read your "EasyScript Express" book and applied the lessons and practice sessions therein. I started putting the concepts to good use immediately, and have found EasyScript to be a benefit to my work.

My notes have become more accurate, I'm able to record more detail, and (most importantly) I'm able to write down more necessary information as opposed to doing it with my own abbreviations or in longhand. Thank you for a unique method of fast note taking. It's been a blessing!

4 out of 5 stars Low investment but a high value-add.......2001-11-13

This book has taken the pain out of note taking for me. The book's page layout could be improved, but the technique is so simple and user-friendly that anyone can learn it quickly and begin to apply immediately. I highly recommend this book.

This is the best source for GRE preparation because it is written by the company who writes the actual test. Recommend using other books to supplement and absolutely use the free online resources.

5 out of 5 stars Great for GRE prep!.......2007-10-01

You'll find this book very useful in preparing your GRE test. A lot of prep material: questions, answers and reviews. It's worth every penny.

1 out of 5 stars Answer explanations!!????.......2007-08-29

I was incredibly disappointed to find out that this book has very few answer explanations compared to other test-prep books. For example, in the review of the quantitative section (p. 19-25) they do provide a few problems with answers that have explanations. But in the long Math Review (p 27-91), the exercises have no explanations for the answers given! Ridiculous! If I get the answer wrong and cannot figure out the logic, how am I supposed to learn?

Also, it is very misleading (at least mis-written) on the inside cover under "IMPORTANT" that "it contains the verbal and quantitative sections from seven full-length paper-based GRE General Test editions, including two sections of each that are complete with explanations." From the logic of this sentence, one would think that there are 14 total sections of tests in this book that come complete with explanations. But not so. Only 4 total sections (basically the first test) have answers WITH explanations.

So, buy another book that actually gives you answers with explanations so that you can learn better.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for transcriptionists.......2000-05-07

This book helped me increase my typing speed believe it or not! When the EasyScript system is used to help build your expansion list in a word-expander software program, it is invaluable. I had thousands of abbreviations in my expansion list, but had a difficult time remembering them. Thanks to this book, I now have a system for creating expansions and remember more of them. This book should really be marketed towards transcriptionists.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ! ! !.......1999-03-24

The Easy Script course changed the way I take shorthand forever. I had gotten the Easy Script I course in the mail. I had read the manual and used the auto tutor tape. What I like about the Easy Script method is that it has 5 basic rules that reinforce basic English. I concur with the ad in saying that it is easier to remember 5 basic rules to retain what is taught than to memorize 20 or 30 rules and not learn anything.

As soon as I opened the ES I package, I started on Lesson 1. One of the parts that I liked is the positional technique of the words. (first 4, 2+2, 3+1) As I've said, this method reinforces basic English skills that I've learned in high school and in college. After I've finished Lesson 1, my appetite for learning more Easy Script was whetted. So, I moved on to Lesson 2. Easy Script has the fixed rules for words, but lets you use common abbreviations that have been used all along. Such as dates, days of the week, months of the year, directions, etc.

The next night of my Easy Script I course, I did Lessons 3-5. I feel as if I've learned something and accomplished something in my life. In office skills, typing, word processing and shorthand are required. Until I've ordered the ES Course, my options were pretty limited insofar as office skills. As I've said previously, I've tried, Speedwriting, Gregg and ABC Stenoscript. The reason I got frustrated was that all three of the systems had too many rules and the systems were inflexible. I never had that problem with Easy Script because you can omit vowels in some words.

Another wonderful thing about this method is that regular longhand words become a type of code. I work for the Federal Government and I notate things and I find myself writing in ES language. For example, "started" becomes "strd", "consideration" becomes "csidh", etc. I find myself writing longhand words down and finding code words using the ES fixed rules.

Now, I'm writing Proper Names, States, Countries, all with Easy Script. I think that is money well spent on ES I. I really have confidence in my shorthand abilities. So far, my writing is now 29 wpm and I hope to reach 40 wpm. My personal goal is to write ES at 80 wpm.

I want to thank you for inventing a painless system of shorthand writing and making it accessible and affordable to the public. As soon as my finances are together, I'm going to order ES II. Again, I thank you for this alternative to traditional shorthand writing!

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Expensive since you can get a practice test from ETS online.......2004-05-23

Its a good book in that you do receive a real GRE. However, ETS provides an online practice that has an exam. The best strategy is to take the online (pdf from gre.org) practice test and find out the concentration of questions and your level of comfort with the topics. The fields that you have most difficulty with will require more practice and memorization. After review of this material in your Intro Psych text and other category specific books (Cognitive, Developmental, Personality, Social, Behavioral, Stats and Neuro) take the Book test under timed conditions. The intevening period of time should wash out the information from the online test. Take that again. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! No better way of pumping up your scores. As with most GREs, if you take at least 4 or 5 practice (deliberate practice) tests, you will see that your scores should increase greatly.

The stats quesitons on the exam are NOT formidable though a recent stats course would help.

You should do fine (if you are a decent Psych undergrad) with a few weeks of review. If you have not had some of the requisite topical courses, you may want to review a little bit further than an Intro Psych text.

4 out of 5 stars Good practice, but don't assume it's an accurate predictor.......2004-05-10

Because this book if out of print it may be hard to find and/or people are asking ridicules prices for it. Keep in mind this book only contains ONE practice. When you sign up for the psych GRE you get one free one as well. Although it's nice to have an actual test to get a feel for the type of questions on the exam...don't assume that because it's an actual GRE test that it will provide you with an accurate indication of your score. I scored a 680 on this exam which was in the 90th percentile. However, on the actual exam I only scored a 600. Although I don't blame this book for "decreasing" my score.. just keep in mind that this is an OLD test and that because it's an old test a lot of the study aids (like Kaplan and Princeton Review) have designed their material with this exact test and these exact questions in mind, therefore giving you the impression that the test is easier than it is. I found the actual psych GREs to be MUCH harder than any of the practice tests ETS has put out. I recommend this book because it gives you a real feel for the exam and because any type of study material is going to be beneficial... however, keep in mind that your scores on this test will probably be much more inflated than the actual exam if you have spent time reading through study aids...as every single one of these questions has been answered throughly in retrospect by Kaplan and Princeton Review.

        4 out of 5 stars Good practice.......2000-04-15

This book is good practice and accurately reflects the realGRE. Since it's written by the same people who write the test it givesa fair representation of the content. The only negative is that there is only one pracitce test.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for GRE Psychology test prep........2000-04-14

Using the test samples provided gives you a good "feel" for the real exam. Gives you a taste of what the real test will be like.

It emphasizes that taking notes and reviewing them is the best way to study and prepare for a class, paper, and/or test. It's a quick read, written in plain English. A good basic place to start learning the art of taking notes.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the How to Study series.......2003-07-22

If you get one book in the How to Study series, this should be it. It's the most useful and important. While his particular system for taking notes is annoying and illegible to me, his general strategies and suggestions are all sensible, his discussions on outlining, using index cards for research papers, and notes for oral presentations are all good.

Ron Fry's study books helped me immensely when I went away to college. His "Take Notes" book will help you figure out what is important in a lecture (meaning what you need to take notes on), taking notes from assigned reading, tips on shorthand, and putting your notes together to help you succeed.

No, neither of the two tests included in this book are the test ETS mails/posts on their website at this time, Fall 2005, as another poster has said. Perhaps ETS releases a new practice test periodically? In which case, why isn't there a compendium of all the ETS practice tests since they started to offer the exam?

Buy this book and you'll have 2 tests, plus the one ETS gives you for free, AND you can by Princeton's excellent book for a fourth. I recommend you take one each weekend for a month before the exam, reviewing the answers on the weekdays. Then you'll have had a solid review AND adapted yourself to taking this grueling 2.5 hour test. But this doesn't substitute for careful review of poetry terms, lit crit terms, authors, and periods: rather, it SUPPLEMENTS and GUIDES such a review.

Has it ever occured to anyone seeking to improve on his chances to pass the GRE in English test that it might not be wise to trust the very people who have a vested interest in keeping your score down to maintain their hard won bell-shaped curve? First, look at the copyright of the latest 3rd edition (1996). Between then and now the focus of the test has changed dramatically. The testers at ETS have vastly increased the numbers of questions dealing with 20th century feminist critics while decreasing the numbers of those that deal with DWEM (Dead White European Males). Further, the questions in the three tests that make up the text are in what I call the 'brute force' technique. Answers without explanations are provided. You should not be so foolish as to expect to see the very same questions on the real thing. Second, the cover touts 'Strategies and Tips From the Test Makers.' These 'tips' are phrased so vaguely as to be useless (study hard, work as rapidly as possible, buy this book, etc). Third, it would have been helpful if ETS had broken down the test into segments of question type. For example, I went through the three tests in the book and identified each question as belonging to one set or type. I found that the test consisted of previous knowledge questions (70%) and general reading comprehension (30%). If this ratio holds for future tests (post 2002/2003), then it would be wise for test takers to study other review guides that contain this latter type. One particularly hard kind of question that was used often in the text was identifying the gammatical use (subject/object) of a targeted word. There is no way to prepare for this except to practice. I further found that ETS likes to use what I call 'buzz words' such that if you can associate that buzz word with its correlative (e.g. sublime = Longinus), then you can spot the correct answer immediately. ETS said nothing about any of this. Finally there are other prep guides that do a much better job. The Princeton Review and REA are recommended. The danger of using only a 'brute force' approach such as used in this text is that you prepare yourself supremely well to know the answers only to the questions listed. The real thing, however, is far different.

        My recommendations:
        1) use the Princeton Review & REA guides
        2) Know the general thrusts of each period of English and
        American Lit
        3) Study the Nortons to English & American Lit
        4) Use the internet to bone up on feminist critics (Irigarry,
        Cixious etc)
        5) Memorize the beginnings and endings of novels typically
        taught in novel courses
        6) Know the definition of a Spenserian stanza (ETS loves this
        one)

In short, this text gives you practice only on those questions least likely to appear. You have been warned.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing more than practice tests........2001-09-22

The first clue to the usefulness of the book is to look at the publisher. This is from ETS which runs the GRE. Although the company wants to assist you, I don't believe it is in its best interest to tell you how to beat the test.

First, they give you general information about the test such as how it is administered and what the general percentage breakdown is (so many interpretation questions, so many diagnostic questions....). Then, they give you a section with sample questions of the different question types they have. Lastly, they give you two sample tests.

The problem I have with this is that there is no explanation of the answers. You can check to see if you got it correct (and check how your score ranks), but you can not see why a particular answer is correct or wrong. For that reason, I would recommend other titles for studying purposes.

The main positive for buying this book is that the questions are coming from from the creator of the test. You know that by taking this, you are seeing questions similar to the ones on the test.

5 out of 5 stars These are the real tests.......2000-06-17

THis is the diagnostic testing book. Use one test to find out what you know before you study, then study, then take the next test to see how you have improved!

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the babble, but take the tests........1998-10-28

If you're taking the GRE Literature in English test, you should buy this in conjunction with The Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE Literature. Read The Princeton Review's book, ignore the ETS's babbling narratives in this book, and then take all the practice tests. By the time you finish, you should be in good shape for the real thing.

          Book Description

Work more effectively and take notes as you go along! Take Note! is designed to accompany Voet, Voet & Pratt’s Fundamentals of Biochemistry, 2 nd Edition. It is a workbook that provides black & white images from the text so students can takes notes directly on them while the instructor is presenting the color images in the classroom.

Fundamentals of Biochemistry, 2 nd Edition uses a more brief and qualitative approach to present biochemistry with chemical rigor, focusing on the structures of biomolecules, chemical mechanisms, and evolutionary relationships. It is written to impart a sense of intellectual history of biochemistry, an understanding of the tools and approaches used to solve biochemical puzzles, and a hint of the excitement that accompanies new discoveries. This edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most recent advances in biochemistry, particularly in the areas of genomics and structural biology. A new chapter focuses on cytoskeletal and motor proteins, currently one of the most active areas of research in biochemistry.
