If you want to know some problems of unintegrated systems and how integrated ERP (=SAP) can help to solve these problems this book is for you. If you need something else/more - look for another book or course.
Well written rationale for ERP use........2006-07-06
A quick read, well written, nicely illustrated with charts, spreadsheets and case studies. Presents a relatively high level perspective of a manufacturer's business processes from pre-sales through planning, production & delivery, to post-sales customer service. Compares the challenges of operations in an unintegrated systems environment with one in which systems are well integrated within an ERP suite and does it in a way that makes it easy to understand and remember the benefits of the latter. Geared toward students in an academic environment, it is useful to those already in business who can benefit from its conceptual clarity. Unlike most of the dated ERP books on the market, it covers current topics like XML & web services.

Adam Bromwich's objective in PeopleSoft HRMS Reporting is to synchronize the perspectives of technical people (PeopleSoft designers and administrators) and functional people (managers who use PeopleSoft). If technicians know what managers need and managers know what technicians can do, more productive enterprises will result. Bromwich succeeds admirably, explaining the human resources, payroll, and benefits aspects of the PeopleSoft HRMS database. Taking a table-by-table approach to the information PeopleSoft stores, the book explains each field in many of the most useful tables and details unusual formatting where it's an issue. He also explains how various pieces of data relate to one another and how best to access them. In one sense, this is a guided tour of a great big relational database.
What's neat about Bromwich's style is his frequent inclusion of workaday tricks and shortcuts for getting things done quickly and easily. These aren't the contrived "hints and tips" that characterize so many software books. Rather, they're practical procedures that the author has learned on the job as a consultant. He's also quick to clarify confusing aspects of PeopleSoft's interface, explaining, for example, that a pay run ID is not the same as a user run ID or a run control ID. He's also careful to explain how PeopleSoft has changed through its revisions, documenting how what used to be a straightforward record of U.S. Social Security numbers is now a more complex facility for handling many countries' citizen-identification systems. --David Wall

A treasure for technical and functional users.......2002-07-28
This book is a treasure for anyone who needs to get quickly up-to-speed on the PeopleSoft HRMS data architecture and the most common tables against which queries and reports are executed. This alone would make the book invaluable because of the confusing PeopleSoft documentation and the thousands of tables. However, the author goes well beyond by breaking down the most important tables, grouped by function, into attributes and explaining how to create highly useful business reports from them.
In addition to the thorough coverage of the data architecture, the book also provides an excellent compendium of information and tips for using SQR to its fullest potential. Although my main interest is in the tables, I considered material on SQR to be a bonus and learned a great deal from this section.
If you are working with PeopleSoft on either the technical or functional side this book will probably be your most used reference. The author deserves the highest accolades for clear writing, technical knowledge and the ability to distill the essentials into one of the best references and tutorials I've read in a long time.

I have been working with Peoplesoft product since last five years,I have seen may books in the market but this is the only book I have seen which has very usefull information which helps the begenners a lot to understand main tables and also gives overview of HRMS functionality.

Any review of supply chain management in general has to begin with Michael Porter's 1985 (now available in a 1998 edition) best seller "Competitive Advantage." For software, one would begin with Christopher Koch's "The ABCs of Supply Chain Management" where he states "Supply chain management software is possibly the most fractured group of software applications on the planet. . . . No one has a complete package." and then move on to the EDIGuys "Supply Chain Information Systems" for specifics on the background, buzz, and hype. But, if you are interested in applying modelling and associated quantitative methods (Advanced Planning) to the supply chain management paradigm, then there is probably no better place to begin than Stadtler and Kilgers book. They lead you through concepts to implementation with six case studies from various industries. And, the supplementary material covering forecast methods, linear and mixed integer programming, genetic algorithms, and constraint programming is invaluable.

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the high quality and standard of the book, Supply Chain Management and Advanced Planning. It reflects state-of-the-art thinking as well as current views, and contains up-to-date case studies of supply chain management and advanced planning systems. There is no doubt that the authors are working at the cutting edge of the supply chain management field. They show intimate knowledge of practical advanced planning applications as well as implementation issues around a variety of commercially available software systems.
Recent information technology developments have changed modern manufacturing organizations dramatically. We have witnessed the introduction of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP and BAAN, aimed at integrating internal processes in an organization. These systems cut across multiple functional areas and provide a corporate wide database with all the relevant data of an organization. Many believed that these systems would address all the problems and lead to drastic improvements of business performance. This focus on internal processes, however, was not sufficient since, in a sense, it was not able to cope with the exceptions and with the variability that confront organizations on a daily basis. State-of-the-art planning procedures, provided by Advanced Planning Systems (APS), are required to allow organizations to reduce the amount of exceptional situations. An APS exploits the environment created by ERP systems and this has created major breakthroughs in enterprise wide planning. The impact has spread wider to collaborative planning amongst supply chain partners. This book is devoted to Advanced Planning Systems, the concepts underlying these, the current limitations of APS, how it links and interacts with ERP systems, what is required for successful implementation, etc. Through using, testing and implementing APS modules developed by companies such as i2 Technologies, J.D. Edwards and SAP A.G., the authors gained many insights. Practical real-world experiences are captured in the various chapters of the book.
This book covers an immense quantity of Supply Chain Management material. It is presented in a logical and easily understandable way. Here and there it is obvious that the authors are not fully comfortable with English but it is not very distracting. The book is comprehensive and the different aspects of supply chain management are outlined in great detail. I found the book a real pleasure to work through. What impressed me most was the ease with which the authors of the various chapters dealt with complex and sometimes very interrelated supply chain aspects. From a personal point of view, the emphasis on quantitative tools to assist and improve planning was very encouraging. This is something that is not recognized and appreciated enough. This book is a must for every logistics professional. Buying this book will be a worthwhile investment!

While they are hundred of SAP or BAAN or J.D. Edwards or Oracle books in the market, only few books were really written in "ERP context". Fortunately, this book is one of few.
The teaching experience told Brady and Monk that "teaching SAP application" to business students was not sufficient to make students understand the "concept of ERP". This is the impression for them to write this book. The foundation of ERP are addressed in business process perspectives; and then, mapped to the ERP process. One "BIG" case-study is used to describe the ERP component, with respect to SAP R/3 system. However, the fundamental is not limited to SAP package since extensions are also provided.
The uniqueness of this book is the combination of "O'Leary's book (ISBN 0521791529)" and "Jacobs & Whybark (ISBN 0072400897)". Like "Why ERP? by Jacobs and Whybark", Brady and Monk use a single case study to describe the ERP in "formal format" (not in novel as Why ERP). Like "O'Leary's book", this book gives the fundamental to understand ERP rather than "implementation of specific package".
Unlike "Why ERP", this book is the formal textbook, very easy to read textbook, not a novel. Unlike "O'Leary's book", this book is the explanation of ERP and interaction of business process, instead of implemenation and outline.
Another major advantage of this book is the easy-well-written is in 200 pages. Graduate students or passion-readers may finish it in one night. This book is also good for ERP introduction (1-3 meetings) for any Production/Operation Management classes or Supply Chain Management.
One thing that I'd like to see more is the "reference". While this book is quite comprehensive, the reference are limited to the CIO (www.cio.com), instead of many existed publications. I wish the authors would do more research in this area and put additional reference in the context in the next edition.

For those interested in redefining the way in which their business does its business, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint: Understanding the Business Process Reference Model is worth a perusal. Authors Curran and Keller define their central idea--business engineering--as a method by which information technology is used to design and reengineer business processes, such as sales and distribution, instead of simply automating them. And as is clear from the title, this concept is explored almost exclusively within the context of SAP R/3.
The book is broken down into four sections: "Business Engineering," "Process Engineering," "Architecture," and "Framework & Tools." These segments follow a sliding scale that goes from MBA esoterica to practical application to behind-the-scenes implementation. The first section is dedicated to such things as mapping out global goals and identifying the organization processes that need to be reengineered. Next, the authors get more fundamental, looking at ways in which SAP R/3 can enable a retooling of existing practice, illustrating this thought via case studies. Lastly, the book examines the details of an R/3 system and the tools in the R/3 arsenal. A terrific discipline-spanning volume, SAP R/3 Business Blueprint's one shortcoming is that it never addresses a world in which SAP R/3 might not be the ultimate answer to an organization's efficiency problems. There's a lot of relevant information in this book, but the authors have a repetitive, rambling, and sometimes vague style that makes it anything but a pleasure to read. You really have to work to sift the wheat from the chaff here. It could be easily condensed to half its size without losing any information.

I don't normally comment, but I don't know what book the reader from Minn. was reading. I'm guessing he meant to review a different book. This is not a "German" book at all. This is the clearest, best written book on SAP I've read, and I've read most of them. If you need an introduction to the business logic behind SAP, this is the book to buy.

This is my third book on SAP R/3. This book is another example of poorly written book on SAP. Though the topics are categorized very carefully and intelligently, the text in the book is in the language that requires 'translation in English.' The terms are either ill defined or if defined, then they have been used inconsistently. It was hard to get out the concept behind a topic, since authors give scattered information without focusing on main idea. Also, authors could have written the business processes (SAP modules) in more like step-by-step (or recipe) method, rather than in 'composition' format.

This book gives a general insight on SAP R/3 functional (and a little bit of technical) model. This book can be very good introduction for the corporate executives with very little or no SAP R/3 experience. However, the contents of this book can be too obvious for those who already have worked with SAP R/3 system.

Dull book with little information.......2002-10-22
If you have no idea what Internet is and have never seen ebay web site then you might learn something from this book. But for an average Internet-savvy person it offers little to nothing. There is a lengthy description of well-know information (like terms of sale of ebay) and constant selling of ebay business model: nothing you can't read elsewhere.

The author "gets" eBay. Unfortunately, he was not granted interviews or access to eBay people. As a result, the book is little more than a collection of articles from the Industry Standard, Fast Company abd the like. Furthermore, the book covers eBay until December 1999 or Q1 2001 at most. Back then, it looked like Yahoo! had a business model, remember? And yes, the author contemplates the possibility of a Yahoo! takeover (which was possible) and even the ridiculous idea that eBay should perhaps create its own "portal" in order to grow... Not worth the money. Buy "The Perfect Store" by Adam Cohen instead.

This book gives an overview of ebay's creation and why it has been a success. It gives no insider insights however. It was fun to read but I did not learn much from it. This book does not have substance.

This book is basically a series of quoted and sited magazine articles hastily cobbled together into a book. The only "real" interviews done by the author are with a few eBay customers who use the site. The author admits no one with eBay granted him an interview or let him in the building. For a much better story of how eBay came to be, read eBoys by Robert Stross.

This book basically delivers what it promises to. Lots of somewhat dry facts about how a small Internet business boomed into one of the hottest "sites" available.
I am a big Ebay fan. I wanted to find out more about the people who created Ebay but also wanted to get a feel for the direction these people were hoping to guide the future of the site to.
Although I thought the story was fairly interesting, this book was very dryly written. Not much was cited other than the absolute bare bones facts and the writing was not particularly interesting.
While I realize this is a business book, I think there was much room for interesting tidbits, advice or funny stories. None here. Too bad...

Due diligence if you're evaluating ERP systems.......2001-09-19
This book is more suited as an executive guide for anyone who is considering ERP or evaluating ERP systems. In fact, the book appears to have been designed with busy senior management and executives in mind because it's focused, hits all of the key points and each chapter is treated as a whitepaper that ends with case studies reinforcing the topic and references. Also, the author makes excellent use of window diagrams throughout to convey information. A random example if this is in chapter 11 where the linkage between implementation approach (big bang vs. phases) is shown by impact of the extent of changes to be made to ERP modules (minimal to extensive) vs. Number of modules in implementation (few to many) and how this translates to the preferred method. This is but one of many such examples.
The book is organized into four parts: (1) introduction, (2) ERP systems and capabilities, (3) ERP life cycle (deciding, selecting, designing, post implementation and training) and (4) electronic commerce and risk.
Each section is backed with cited references and necessary facts with which to decide whether or not to opt for an ERP system, and if so, how to select the correct package. The references and citations extend into every chapter, which I liked because when the author cites a fact, such as a typical cost of an ERP implementation ... you know where that figure came from. I normally do not like discussions of specific products in general books, but given the narrow field of ERP vendors the discussion of each of the major players, their company histories and market position is appropriate for this book given the subject and audience.
I personally liked the case studies at the end of each chapter because there were specific to the chapter's topic, were drawn from real life, and were frank about the problems encountered and how they were addressed. This is a gold mine for executive management seeking to determine the true scope, cost and potential value of an ERP project. I also like how each option for implementation was thoroughly covered.
Overall, this book provides complete coverage of all of the issues and factors that need to be examined before taking the plunge into an ERP system. It will definitely allow executive management to make informed decisions, and will also prepare IT and business stakeholders for the realities of an implementation. This book will pay for itself many times over for the intended audience. It is clear, concise and factual.

The book does not lack interesting subjects, but most of them are not peculiar of ERP systems, and could be suitable for many other kinds of software systems. Gap analysis, costs, human resources and chains are problems people are dealing with since the first computer entered the business word. I would have liked a publication in which briefly summarized process and data issues would be referred to a proper functional, and even technological, architecture of ERP. I do need buy and read a book whose title is ERP in order to get a description of the problems whilst the book is supposed to dissert about their solutions. The latter target has been someway met, but not fully reached.

Because this is a dense read, you won't be surprised to learn that the author, Daniel E. O'Leary, is a Ph.D. If you don't have a conversational grasp of acronyms - including, but not limited to ERP, LAN, WAN, SMEs BOPSE, MAPs, SAP and BAAN - then you'll have to decode as you read. If you're actually interested in using the business resource known as "Enterprise Resource Planning," or ERP, your company should be grossing some $200 million a year, because ERP costs about $15 million to implement. While O'Leary makes a very compelling case in favor of ERP, citing integration of information infrastructure, real-time data, value creation and other wonderful attributes, this is a very expensive and risky resource to pursue. Companies such as Microsoft and Cisco had a hard time implementing it and even they have to worry about cost. We [...] warn that this is serious tech for Big Money companies. Mom and Pop operations need not apply.

O'Leary did an excellent job in compiling the story of ERP in a single book. Unlike other ERP book, O'Leary provides the fundamental, technical, and practical of ERP system. Many presented cases are well organized with the contents in the book. The long case is brought up on and off to remind reader about the process. If you like "Why ERP?" by Jacobs but want more technical and further reference, please grasp this book and study it. Many references are provided for further research as well. Well done!!

As the title sounds, the author explained very well about the integration issues that companies who are aiming to become World Class Manufacturing companies status should look into. I stongly suggest those professionals who are being involved in the ERP business to read this book. Flow chart diagrams represent the best way to describe the integration processes among functional areas.

This book was required for my ERP/SAP class at my university for an Information Systems BS. It was easy to read and to the point. Many charts are in the book to display the information. It describes the many processes and requirements for ERP systems.
