Book Description
The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health.
Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. "Don't even consider keeping up with the Joneses," Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. "They're broke!"
The Total Money Makeover isn't theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you.

Not rocket science, but then again, most things worth doing aren't.......2007-10-04
If you are looking for a step-by-step guide to crawl out from under your financial rock, get control, and win with money, this is your book. Dave is a fantastic communicator, and part of that is his willingness to tell it like it is. If it's stupid, he calls it stupid; but always with the heart to see people change their lives for the better. Dave has said over and over that success with finances is only 20% knowledge, but 80% behavior. This book covers the basics of the head knowledge, but hopefully Dave's insights and the numerous personal narratives from real people who have implemented the plan and are winning with money will inspire you to change your behavior. If you need more convincing, just find his radio show or Web site and listen to how he helps people change their lives for the better.

Dave Ramsey is my hero! He has honest, easy to follow advice. Best of all is that it really works. Dave takes you through each step and explains them totally. This is 100% common sense. My husband and I are almost through "baby step 3". We became "gazelle intense" and are looking forward to living DEBT FREE and building wealth and a happy retirement. We won't be reading "100 Ways to Prepare Alpo" in our retirement years. Thanks to Dave Ramsey and The Total Money Makeover.

Great book, but out-of-date.......2007-05-28
I actually worked with Alex Bove on updating a book on estate planning, when I practiced law in Boston many years ago. I purchased this book back in 1996 (the date of the current edition), but since then the laws have changed several times, most notably in February 2006, with the enactment of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. As a result of those changes, many of the examples and planning suggestions discussed in Bove's book no longer work. For example, all rules relating to gifting, penalty periods, look-back periods, "half-a-loaf" planning, and annuities, have been radically changed. Do not rely on the examples in the book!
That being said, his material on durable powers of attorney, trusts (other than the Convertible Trust, which no longer works), gift taxes, general eligibility requirements, and ethics of Medicaid planning, is still worth reading.
For an example of a book that incorporates all the latest changes in the law, together with case studies and numerous cutting edge planning ideas, take a look at How to Protect Your Family's Assets from Devastating Nursing Home Costs: Medicaid Secrets. It's pricey, but well worth it when you consider all the information and ideas packed into it!
Woefully out of date........2007-04-28
While I own this book (I bought it ten years ago) it is now very much out-of-date. The law of Medicaid is one that is constantly in flux, changing just about every year. Recent changes to Medicaid law have made every book on the subject of Medicaid published before January 2007 obsolete. While this book and its author, Mr. Bove provided a great overview of the Medicaid planning process and for many years was the go to book to learn about Medicaid and the nursing home, today it is woefully out-of-date. For an example of an up-to-date book with information for all 50 states see: The Medicaid Handbook 2007
Not Topical.......2006-11-11
The book fairly explains the complexities of Medicare. However, many changes have been made in Medicare since the date this publication was printed. The book should be updated to reflect the recent changes.
Worthless after Feb 8, 2006.......2006-08-24
Dear Worried Reader,
On February 8, 2006, President Bush signed a law called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. This law makes sweeping changes to the ability of seniors to transfer (gift) any assets to their children and grandchildren. Following the advice of any book written before that date can cause a catastrophic loss of Medicaid privileges when a senior citizen is most vulnerable..when they actually enter a nursing home. Do not use this book as a reliable guide to current law. elder law attorney Chicago, IL
Thanks to Mr. Bove.......2005-09-21
The information in this book is easy to understand and extremely valuable. It saved my family thousands of dollars by helping me get Medicaid for my father.

Good Information .......2007-10-05
Good information in the workbook but really the same information as in the Total Money Makeover book, I recommend one or the other but not both books -- and I think Dave would agree!
Love, love, love this book!!!.......2007-08-23
Dave Ramsey teaches how to SIMPLY manage your money, develop a working budget and to become DEBT FREE!! It's a weird concept, especially for Americans, but since reading this book and taking Dave's Financial Peace University, my husband & I have our $1K emergency fund, pay cash for EVERYTHING, and so far have paid off over $5K in debt in just a few months. We will be completely debt free (except the house) within 2 years and plan to pay off the house w/in 7 years (21 years shorter than the mortgage note). That was something we could have NEVER wrapped our brains around in the past. Now, instead of working to pay Visa and Mastercard, we will be working to pay for our FUTURE!!
It's a great read and every person in the USA needs to read this book. I have no doubt, it would do amazing things for our ecomony!!
Not worth the purchase if you buy the book.......2007-08-08
I bought the Total Money Makeover Workbook along w/ the hardcover book, thinking it would be more 'hands-on'. It wasn't worth the extra cost. A lot of the exercises seemed written for children - fill in the blanks w/ words you read in the passages... really silly. Plus, all the necessary worksheets are in the hardcover book already, so the workbook didn't seem to give me anything new. Don't waste your money on the workbook.
Money Makeover Workbook is Helpful.......2007-08-02
If you're trying to dig yourself out of a debt nightmare or just want to get your finances in order, Dave Ramsey's books and advice are the way to go. Take the time to read his books - you won't be sorry.
very good insight.......2007-08-01
I just purchased the book along with the workbook. And I've also purchased the book on cd. Both explain things very well. My daughter and I are still in the working process.

When fully implemented with a professional's assistance, this book will help physicians and their financial advisors develop an effective long-term financial plan.
Customer Reviews:
Well Done www.MedicalBusinessAdvisors.com.......2006-02-06
In his book Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors, Dr. David E. Marcinko, MBA, CMP, CFP provides us with a simple and yet very complete view on the basics of financial planning that every physician should know in order to maximize our chances for success in the financial aspect of our medical careers and personal lives. The book is well structured, organized and easy to read. Divided in ten chapters, it covers important aspects of personal financial planning such as insurance, home mortgages, retirement plans, auto buying, taxes and more.
In an era where doctors must have a solid understanding of the basics of financial management, this book is a must-have on every physician's private book collection. Although not a substitute for a formal business education, this book will help physicians navigate effectively through the hurdles of day-to-day financial decisions with the help of an accountant, financial and legal advisors.
This book would make an excellent reference for teaching medical students and residents the basics of monetary management. I highly recommend this book and commend Dr. Marcinko and the Institute of Medical Business Advisors, Inc. on a job well done.
Manuel J. Colón, MD
From the Foreword.......2004-07-03
The "Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors" is essentially a "how-to book" on finance, financial planning and related topics for healthcare providers. Fortunately for patients, medicine requires a high degree of professional training, both in terms of science and technology. Unfortunately for providers, it affords little time for learning about financial or investment planning.
More to the point, this is an unusual textbook on financial planning for two reasons. First, it is a detailed guide for physician's seeking the complex road to success and profit in the confusing healthcare industrial complex. Rarely does one see such clarity of presentation, without the usual jargon that often discourages those trying to learn such a foreign and forbidding subject, as finance. Second, the subject matter is focused for medical providers who work in one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. The contributors hope that by integrating the disciplines of financial planning, they will help foster affordable and profitable healthcare for our nation, which is so entrepreneurial, yet aging.
In my thirty-five years on Wall Street, I have observed that physicians are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to anything regarding finance. Most medical professionals have enough on their mind practicing their specialty and keeping up with healthcare technology and practice trends, that planning for their financial future is often forgotten. Financial planning and good investment practices require a solid background of how corporations work in the "real world", and an awareness of how they function within the economy. These economic essentials are vital to understanding practice, as principles like budgeting, risk management, cash flow analysis, fiscal benchmarking and rudimentary accounting are presented in this book. Furthermore, the necessity of keeping up with state and federal insurance legislation, tax laws, retirement, and estate planning is obvious, and included.
"Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors" focuses on financial planning and how the healthcare professional can increase personal knowledge and skills in this area. The coverage is both broad and yet detailed, ranging from basic macroeconomic factors that affect our national economy, such as the Gross Domestic Product (a single figure that summarize the business activity of the US), to the more mundane activities of maintaining cash flow, college funding, tax reduction strategies, home mortgages and even correcting credit card reporting errors. More sophisticated topics include: debt and equity investment vehicles, derivatives, mutual fund and hedge fund investing, portfolio management and risk analysis, and the new laws on tax, retirement, and estate planning. The book rightly concludes with practice succession planning for doctors and a chapter on the psychological meaning of money itself.
It seems to me that all those in healthcare are well-served by reading this book with it's format and step-by-step setup process for financial success, in terms of starting and ultimately surviving in a complicated business full of pitfalls and misinformation. Most useful will be the extremely detailed table of contents that allows the user to quickly pinpoint an area of interest, and get started answering a problem.
Simply put, my recommendation is to read the: "Financial Planning Handbook for Physicians and Advisors", and "reap".

Look Elsewhere.......2001-05-05
A quick read and waste of time. Information contained in the book generally available to anyone in al public forums.
Take a pass on this book........2001-05-05
Alzheimers Disease, fighting for finacial survival did not live up to my expectations. The Author clearly has "issues himself" and the biggest one is thinking we need his advice. The title is very misleading. There are many caring books on Alzheimers that include a short chaptor telling all we need to know about nursing homes etc. and protecting your money. There are no magic bullets contained in this book as the title implies and I would return it if I could.
Book is worthless.......2001-05-02
The book isn't about Alzheimers at all. It's simply a rehash of publicly available info on transferring your assets before someone enters a nursing home.
Looking for a great TOPIC to discuss then read it.......2001-03-09
I was interested in learning a "little" about asset protection had been hearing soooooo much talk amongst my peers on the tennis courts, about a friend who basically lost everything to a nursing home because he was not properly protected. So dedcided to do a search , somewhat skeptical wondering if I could digest such information.
I read the editorial review and saw that this book had been written for someone like me that needed simple, language.
I found the language to be as easy as pie, and well the examples were an absolute delight. Not only did I learn it but I can convey it too, & That says it all.
A Great Write Good For you too!
I feel like a heavy weight was "literally lifted".......2001-03-06
If you have a love one about to, or may someday need to,go into a nursing home, and do NOT have a clue on what to do with there money, but have a hunch that giving it all away is not the only way.
Then this book will show you in step by step form on what to do, what not to do, and how to do it. I was able to walk away from this book with "real" knowledge.
This book replaced fear with ease and avoidance with attempt! It Should be a mainstay on everyone's bookshelf.

A kick in the nutz..........2007-09-30
Wow. What a wakeup call. This week saw the very worst of my two toddlers' behavior, my loaded Suburban SUV stolen and a few other pivotal moments. What I am coming away with after 50 pages of this book - my kids have too much. I spend too much on them. I am creating monsters. I am humbled. Fortunately, we have way too much disposable income, but after reading this book - the excess is going to go to micro loans and more community compassion - NOT TO BUYING more crap for my kids. Lessons learned. This was the kick in the azz I needed. THIS from a big believer in YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE philosophy, still I had let things slide VERY wrong when it came to my kids. WOW. This book helped me see some habits I was creating for my family that were NOT life affirming. I am going to change as a result of reading this book. Can you give a higher recommendation?
Wow.......2007-02-17
This was a very good book - I suggest it to everyone I know. Puts money into perspective. I love this book!
Makes Boring Budgeting Come To Life.......2005-12-28
After receiving a recommendation for the online Mvelopes system (CD included with this book), my husband and I decided to read the book and research the system a little more before jumping in with both feet. I found the fictional story engaging, and a big help in conveying the basics of financial management. While it might seem a little hokey at times, I give the author credit for using the power of narrative to teach his material months after reading it, I find myself remembering situations in the book, and applying the principle it taught to my current circumstances). The content of the book is excellent, and I'm proud to say that after three months of using the Mvelopes system, we've reigned in our spending and are now able to avoid accumulating debt. The plan Smith teaches in Money for Life works, and you don't need a computer to pull it off. The book is full of options for pencil and paper lovers, or for those fond of spreadsheets. Money for Life is a great tool that empowers each of us to take control over our resources!
A reader:.......2005-07-27
Money for life relies on a online software program that will cost you a few thousand of dollars over a lifetime of use. If you need a reason to buy a computer this is it. If not, and you need a tool to keep conscious of your spending and wealth building habits. Then I would recommend the budget kit by Judy Lawrence. Good Luck!
Rather Ingenious.......2004-08-28
This is not your typical "How To" budgeting book. It is a marketing tool, both for a software service and a way of life. The cleverness comes in the way it is packaged. Most "Start Budgeting, Get Out Of Debt" books I've read are very direct, with lots of facts, figures, instructions, and warnings. Some people love this sort of thing. Others have flashbacks to algebra class and their eyes glaze over.
My friend's wife is one of these people.
He and I have discussed at length how to get her "on board" with the household budget. This book may be the answer.
Instead of a step-by-step, rational explantion of the budgeting process, this book is about relationships: a husband and wife, the wife and her best friends, and the well-meaning son and his parents. Stepping into this mix is the wise old financial planner, with time-tested advice and tales of the good life, free from worry, debt, and public embarassment. As the couple progresses through the stages of getting their financial house in order, their relationship deepens and grows, to the point where they are able to offer the same to their friends. The husband, who in the first chapter overcharges their credit card and causes his wife humiliation at the checkout counter, slowly becomes the perfect mate, and in the end treats her to a perfectly romantic beach picnic in the tropics.
Sound hokey? It is. But, this is the kind of visionary thinking that may get my friend's wife to get the Big Picture that gets lost in all the talk of bank accounts, envelopes, and receipts. By couching household budgeting in terms of personal relationships rather than account balances, she might just catch the vision. I expect that my own wife won't be swayed so easily. But, I think it does demonstrate a better approach than the figures and spreadsheets that I have been plying her with. So to that end, it's well worth reading, even if you already understand the topic. It might help you explain it to someone else.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Needs to be Reprinted.......2001-10-03
For the middle class - getting sick in your old age forces you into extremme state of humiliation. For years you worked to secure a retirement for yourself and your spouse - and than the cost of medical care - the parts that MEDICARE does not cover leaves you in a desparate situation. The medical costs are more than you can bear - you are responsible for your medical, skilled nursing, home care, ambulance service, prescription drugs etc. Paying these bills in a long term illness - impoverishes the spouse who is left after the debilitating illness takes the sick one's life. I have no objection that saved wealth would not be transferred to one's descendants - but a system has to be put into place that protects the spouse that remains alive. Mr. Armond Budish in this fine book - provides one legal and moral techniques to allow one the best opportunity to save a reasonable portion of one's wealth so that the surviving spouse does not end up totally destitute. in most cases the surviving spouse's health has taken a precarious toll in taking care of the sick seeing him or she waste away - and seeing the all-powerful state force one to spend one's resources down. For an individual who has worked and saved all his/her life refused welfare of any kind over those forty productive work years - to be treated so disdainlly by a cold bureacracy makes one wonder about the priorities or lack thereof in establishing a safety net for our senior citizens. If the money is taken by the state upon the death of the second spouse - that's fine. Children of hard working middle class citizens like myself should not necessarily be entitled to the redistribution of wwealth - but allow for and provide our seniors their share of the sun.

Book tips helped me save money . . ........2000-08-14
After receiving this book as a gift, I flipped through the chapters. I noticed that the book references several web sites that will supposedly help you save money in various arenas. I haven't looked them all up yet, but I did go to one recommended for insurance. As a result, I got a new auto insurance policy and saved $500.00. The book has definitely been helpful for me.
Financial Fitness for Life.......1999-12-11
Excellent concise work that is invaluable for anyone that is working towards becoming financially independent. This book can be effectively used by students through those that are in retirement. Lots of short concrete examples so that the theories come to life. Also, nearly every page has a 'hot tip' that show ways for one to save money, invest more wisely or to somehow improve one's financial situation. This book is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme. However, it should be required reading for anyone who wants to improve their personal financial management skills. Young couples that would follow the author's advice would be able to live without debt and to retire early.

Solid Advice On Putting Your Financial House In Order.......2006-11-01
Susan Feitelberg, the author, is a JPM Chase Financial Adviser. This book is product of seminars she has given to her clients to provide guidance on improving their financial situation and wealth. The book provides a logical, step-by-step approach to managing your finances in an organized fashion.
As a competitive athlete, who needs to be physically fit, she explains that individuals need to get financially fit to be able to maximize their wealth. She compares getting financially fit to an athlete getting ready for a competitive event. Preparation, practice and a game plan are necessary for both to achieve success.
According to Feitelberg, individuals need a plan to handle their finances today and going forward. She uses athletics as a metaphor to explain how goals, vision, persistence and success apply to individuals in developing their financial plans. She recommends that you become your own financial trainer.
The crux of the book is composed of separate chapters on the Four Quadrants of Wealth:
- Earning (equivalent to metabolism)
- Spending (caloric intake)
- Saving (strength training)
- Investing (cardio fitness)
The author also delves into the importance of having a positive attitude in order to reach your goals, and therefore suggests that an individual first prepare a net worth statement, decide on the short- and long-term goals, and revise them as necessary.
In the area of investing she recommends that a list of current investments be prepared with your investment goals for 1 and 3 years. She then covers compound interest, dollar cost averaging, tax reduction and retirement funding, diversification and tax deferral. In the savings area, the author reviews CDs, MMAs, 529 plans, retirement plans, and the importance of coordinating savings with other quadrants.
Overall, the book is an excellent primer on what is needed to have a sound financial future.
Learn a lifetime of financial fitness skills.......2006-04-13
Learn how to develop a strategy program which works for a lifetime of financial fitness in Susan Feitelberg's THE NET WORTH WORKOUT which provides a program for earning, saving and investing habits which slims down spending and creates defined goals. The author gives his seminar to JPMorgan Chase financial advisors and their clients each year: now it's in a handy book form to help readers understand the foundations of sensible spending, saving, and earning management.
Well written!!!!!.......2006-03-05

Great book and a quick read-Must BUY!.......2006-01-20
This is a great book! This book is a quick read, even if you think you do not have time to read it... you can read it quickly and establish your frame work on how to get started. Even if you already invest, there are many helpful tips to allow you to get rich slowly. If you are an athlete, the correlation to sports and athletics will enable you to visualize your success just as you would before a big race, or game. Do yourself a favor, read this book and start building your net worth today.
Excellent and Simple.......2006-01-18
I have read a ton of books and I must admit that I found this book to be extremely simple and thought provoking. Even though I utilize a broker here in NY the information, guidelines and structure that Ms. Fietelberg presented gave me a very different perspective on what it takes to "get in shape". I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for clear and logical advice on planning their financial future. An excellent read.
